Centre seeks explanation from Mayawati on Noida park project

New Delhi, July 11 (ANI): Ministry of Environment and Forest has sought an explanation from Uttar Pradesh government over alleged violation of environmental laws in construction of a park in NOIDA

Uttar Pradesh Government is constructing Memorial Park in 33-hectare area along the Yamuna Riverbed in Sector 15 -A of NOIDA.

State government is installing statues of Chief Minister Mayawati, her political mentor Kanshi Ram, and Dr B. R. Ambedkar in this park. This park is a new addition to the controversial statue installation projects taken up by the Mayawati’s government.

Residents and environmentalists are opposing to the statue installations as it violated the green law.

Earlier, the team of Indian Forest Service officers sent by the Central Government to probe the alleged violations found out that around 6,000 trees have been chop down for the project. Their report also pointed that the State government ignored an environment impact assessment required for such a projects.

“The team during its field visit found that the state government lacks a strong stand on environment appraisal and forestry appraisal. The team opined that the state government should have taken forest and environment clearances. To consider the opinion of the state government, we have asked for their comments,” said Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest Jai Ram Ramesh on Saturday in National Capital

Earlier this week a two-Judge Bench of the Supreme Court refused to intervene in the statue installation projects of UP government. (ANI)

Supreme Court issues notice to UP government on statues issue

New Delhi, June 29 (ANI): A vacation bench of the Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh Government for allegedly misusing public money to install statues of prominent Dalit leaders like herself, Dr B R Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram and the party’s elephant symbol.

The vacation bench heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. The PIL is seeking a stay on the further inauguration of these statues on July 3.

The petitioner has alleged that the multi-crore projects of installing statues are being carried out as part of state policy, which is arbitrary and violates Article 14 of the Constitution.

The PIL also sought the removal of statues of Mayawati and all party symbols from public places.

Mayawati had unveiled 15 statues, which include that of party founder Kanshi Ram and six of herself on June 25.

Delhi-based lawyer Ravi Kanta, who filed the PIL, said every action taken by the Uttar Pradesh Government must be seen to be in the public interest. The arbitrary actions of the State Government must be invalidated, he added.

Mayawati, her party and the state’s Chief Secretary were named respondents in the PIL. (ANI)

Congress hits back at Advani over his anti-Ambedkar remarks

New Delhi, Mar 2 (ANI): Agitated over BJP leader L.K. Advani’s remarks blaming Congress of having acted against Dr. B R. Ambedkar at one time, the party on Monday chose to describe his statement as “complete ignorance of political history”.

“Advani alleged that the Congress was anti-Ambedkar and worked against Ambedkar. He also said the Congress is anti-low castes. If anybody who does not know history, such allegations would be termed as non-sense. A statement from a person, who is a prime ministerial candidate of a party, does not only show cheap politics but also reflects complete ignorance of political history,” said Abhishek Manu Singhvi, the Congress’s spokesman.

Questioning Advani’s awareness of history, Singhvi said the NDA’s prime ministerial candidate was not even aware of the stand taken by his own colleague Arun Shouries earlier in his book “Worshipping False Gods”.

“We would like to make a humble request to Advani that he should read a book, “Worshipping False Gods”, written by his own colleague Arun Shourie. He is unaware of history and has no knowledge of Ambedkar’s relations with Congress. He is unaware of the role played by Ambedkar and Congress in India’s freedom movement. He should at least have the knowledge of his colleague’s book,” Singhvi said.

On Sunday, Advani had accused the Congress of adopting tactics which “ensured” defeat of Dalit icon and architect of the Constitution, Bhimrao Ambedkar in post-Independence polls.

“After Independence, when the first government of the country was taking shape, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru gave priority to give berth only to Congressmen in it. But Gandhiji advised him to include scholar leaders like Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Ambedkar in the government,” Advani had stated in Gwalior during a public rally.

“Though Ambedkar was later made chairman of the committee formed for framing the Indian Constitution in which he had ensured that all sections of society are protected,” Advani had added. (ANI)
