Fire drives Australia’s newest gladiator

Sitting in London’s plush Dorchester Hotel in his good luck metal t-shirt, Sam Worthington is a far more earthly version of his Clash Of The Titans character Perseus.

It was just a few years ago that the actor dubbed “Australia’s next big thing” sold off all his possessions to his friends at bargain basement prices and started living out of his car. A fresh start he equates to hitting control-alt-delete on a computer.

He may be fronting multi-million dollar blockbusters, but Worthington says he still lives out of just two suitcases.

I asked if his control-alt-delete phase gave him the hunger needed to win the role, in which he co-stars with screen veterans Liam Neelson and Ralph Finnes, who have a good 100-odd roles between them.

“It never really affected going for work, that wasn’t the thing. I just looked in the mirror and didn’t like me,” he said.

“Work’s just… this is my job. It’s a fantastic job but there was something wrong with me, so it gave me me back again.

“I love myself now – in a nice way. In a sense of, I’m still struggling. I’m a 33-year-old man who struggles every day, but I’m having a bit more fun with myself now,” he added.

Worthington sits perched in his chair, one leg up, like a restless big kid during our interview.

This is the exact exuberance Clash Of The Titans director Louis Leterrier was looking for in his Perseus.

“All of the screenplay was written for another kind of a man – younger, innocent, doe-eyed – and [then] Sam comes in and I see the Perseus I never thought I’d see,” Leterrier said.

“He has a fire in him, a drive, redirected anger. I don’t know why Sam has got that angst in him, ’cause you know it’s Sam – his parents are happy, he’s got great family, he’s a super successful movie star. Still he has that fire.

“He’s so humble that he’ll never settle and be, ‘OK, I’ve arrived in my life’.”

Worthington says he may play tough guy roles, but he is a pussy cat at heart.

That, he says, is a common feature among Australia’s male actors – tough out the outside, gooey on the inside.

Worthington said he wanted to add a sense of fragility and questioning to his warrior role.

“He’s not just some brawn,” Worthington said of Perseus.

“Hopefully I’m adding a bit more than just that. Hopefully I’m adding vulnerability and bit of pathos and humour.”

Director Leterrier, meanwhile, revelled in the chance to be a big kid again – to play with monsters and destroy the city of Argos as he used to do to his Lego constructions as a boy.

Worthington admits shooting big, bold, brash blockbusters is a lot fun.

“I like these type of movies … I like doing movies I would go and see,” he said.

“Then when I spend six months flying on a winged horse or doing something as crazy as being on the back of a banshee, you’re committed to it because you know the audience is going to command that themselves – just like I would demand it.”

Clash Of The Titans is released in Australia on April 1.

Frank Lampard and Christine Bleakley go public with their romance

London, Mar 10 (ANI): After playing coy for months, Frank Lampard and Christine Bleakley have finally come out in the open with their romance.

The couple has dated for six months but refused to be openly pictured together, until now.

Even last week Chelsea ace Frank, 31, hid behind his scarf as photographers spotted them at London’s Dorchester Hotel.

But finally he gave in to the pressure from the telly presenter, 31, to prove his love.

And on Tuesday, the pair posed for fans gathered outside BBC Radio 1’s studios in west London.

Frank joined the ‘One Show’ star while she promoted her Sport Relief challenge on Chris Moyles’ radio show – she plans to waterski the English Channel.

Later, the footballer took her for breakfast.

“Christine was getting increasingly agitated. They’ve been together ages but hadn’t gone properly public,” the Daily star quoted a source as saying.

“It didn’t help when Frank said he was a single man in a recent interview. She told him they should not be ashamed of their romance and Frank agreed,” he added. (ANI)

Liveried soldiers, Pak commandos guarding Musharraf in London

London, Sep.10 (ANI): Liveried soldiers and Pakistani commandos are guarding former president Pervez Musharraf in his flat near London’s Edgware Road.

According to The Guardian, shisha bars and kebab joints of London’s Arabic quarter surround the one-million-pound flat.

The area is also home to Tony Blair, who owns a large house in the nearby Connaught Square.

The former president pays for his protection detail from Scotland Yard, the report adds.

He is said to dine regularly at the Dorchester hotel and hosts regular music evenings at his apartment. He regularly plays golf and often plays bridge with his confidante, Brigadier Niaz Ahmed, a retired arms dealer.

The report also says Musharraf pays 450 pounds to hire an official VIP lounge every time he flies from or to Heathrow airport. Musharraf also travels in a bulletproof vehicle, it adds.

The report about the extravagant security comes as Lord Nazir Ahmed, a critic in the House of Lords, tabled a parliamentary question about the cost of these security arrangements in July.

The government replied that it was the ‘established Home Office policy not to comment on protective security arrangements and their related costs’.

Nazir said ‘our old age pensioners don’t get security, so how can we pay for an old general who wants to enjoy himself in London?’

The Pakistan-born peer said he was collecting evidence for a possible war crimes prosecution through Bindmans solicitors, who pursued the retired Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet through the British courts in the late 1990s.

It is claimed that Musharraf is on a visitor’s visa and it has been reported that he intends to take up permanent residence in the Middle East or in the United States, where his son Bilal lives, the report said.

Lord Ahmed of Rotherham has objected strongly to British Government’s decision to provide a security cover to Musharraf.

Lord Ahmed, in his letter to the Home Secretary, has said asked the government to discontinue Musharraf’s police protection as he believed his presence would stoke unrest within the Muslim community in the country.

“I think the Government needs to review Musharraf’s security. There are people within Britain who could do with those extra police officers rather than a man who can afford private body guards. I also believe that if he remains in this country then he is a threat to peace and public order,” The Times quoted Lord Ahmed, as saying.

He urged the authorities to stop spending money on protection by Scotland Yard for the exiled leader.

“It is evident from various newspaper reports that the British Pakistani and Kashmiri community is deeply disturbed and divided by Musharraf’s controversial campaign and the security provided by the Home Office for this purpose,” Lord Ahmed’s letter stated.

“I would strongly urge the Government to distance themselves from Musharraf and his political ambitions here as I firmly believe that any perceived promotion or assistance of his activities here may have an adverse impact on community cohesion within the United Kingdom,” it added.

However, he is yet to receive a reply of the letter.

Earlier, in a letter to Lord Ahmed, a borough councilor, Pervez Choudhry had informed that people, especially of the Muslim community are not happy with the Labour Party’s decision to allow Musharraf to stay in London.

“The people of Slough and in particular the Pakistani community are extremely upset and angry that local Labour Party officials took it upon themselves to invite General Musharraf to Slough,” Choudhry wrote.

Musharraf had visited Slough for the Pakistan Independence Day Celebrations.

“They used this day to furtively invite this man whose hands are drenched in the blood of innocent men, women and children in Pakistan. This is seen as a slap on the face of British Pakistanis and total disregard for democratic values in Britain,” Choudhry further added. (ANI)

Jordan to spill the beans on her broken marriage on ITV

London, July 2 (ANI): Katie Price a.k.a Jordan is set to spill the beans on her broken marriage Peter Andre on ITV.

This will be the first time that she has spoken officially in public since the split.

The glamour model is going to tell-all in an exclusive interview with her old pal Piers Morgan.

Jordan sealed the deal on Monday with the Britain’s Got Talent judge at London’s Dorchester Hotel.

Morgan will ask her about the reasons that led to the break-up of her four-year marriage.

Jordan would be asked about her antics during her now-famous meltdown holiday on Ibiza, when she cavorted near-naked in nightclubs with a clutch of hunky fellas.

The 31-year-old also faces awkward questions about her friendships with other men. She is expected to be asked about hunky riding instructor Andrew Gould, whom she raced to see when she got home from the wild island.

“Piers is over the moon to get the Jordan exclusive. Jonathan Ross will be green with envy that she turned him down and went with his biggest rival,” the Daily Star quoted an insider as saying. (ANI)

Britney demands for ‘never smoked in’ hotel room during London visit

New Delhi, May 9 (ANI): Pop princess Britney Spears is proving to be a “diva” in the true sense, as she has demanded a hotel room that has never been smoked in during her London visit.

The ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ hitmaker, who is gearing up to extend her Circus tour to Europe, will be visiting London in June.

According to the China Daily, she has laid down multifarious demands regarding her stay at London’s Dorchester hotel.

Although Britney will be staying at the hotel for just 2 weeks, she has asked the hotel authorities to arrange humidifiers in every room, get Marilyn Monroe DVDs and 100 watt light bulbs.

The list of her demands doesn’t end here, as she has even demanded for fresh flowers, which she intends to arrange herself, celebrity magazines and women’s novels.

“Britney may only be staying in the city for two weeks but she knows exactly what she wants,” a source told London’s Daily Star newspaper.

“She’ll be bringing all her own pillows for ultra comfort and her security will sleep outside her suite every night,” the source added.

Britney has also called for tickets for West End theatre productions, as well as a place for horse riding and a map of running routes around the nearby Hyde Park.

It has also been reported that she is planning to charter a plane to fly to her another UK date which is 200 miles away.

“Britney is also hoping to make a private visit to Kensington Palace. She has decided she will travel by private plane to Manchester – then fly straight back to London,” the source added.

Britney will appear at London’s O2 arena for eight shows between June 3 and 14. (ANI)

Secret to Britney Spears’ fit body – pole dancing!

London, May 1 (ANI): The secret behind Britney Spears’ fit body has been revealed – pole dancing.

The 27-year-old star has installed an eight-foot metal pole in her 1,100 pound-a-night penthouse suite at London’s posh Dorchester hotel, when her Circus world tour begins its UK leg.

“Britney has a huge fan base in the UK and really wants her shows here to be a hit,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“Pole-dancing is an excellent cardio and fat-burning workout, and Britney has had private classes in her studio gym in LA.

“She wants to keep up her exercise regime on tour. Luckily, the hotel was happy to accommodate her needs.

“She can swing around her pole while watching TV or listening to music. Climbing up it requires real core strength. It really is hard work.

“In addition, she’ll have a treadmill and stepper brought to her suite, as well as a sit-up machine. By the time Britney takes to the stage, her six-pack of old will be back!” the source added. (ANI)

Even in sandals Elle Macpherson makes fashion statement

London, Apr 30 (ANI): Aussie model Elle Macpherson has showed that she can still look glam at 45 in a mini dress and sandals.

Macpherson, who is a six-footer, dressed down in a teeny white dress and gold flats at a dinner for American fashion designer Michael Kors at China Tang in the Dorchester hotel.

“Not many 45-year-olds can get away with a mini dress and bare legs but Elle can still carry it off,” the Daily Express quoted one admiring guest as saying.

“Even in her sandals she towered over half of the men in the room including Michael Kors – so it was probably a good idea to leave the heels at home!” the guest added. (ANI)

When Penny Lancaster had a fit of shyness

London, Mar 30 (ANI): Brit model Penny Lancaster was spotted displaying her shy side as she left London’s Dorchester hotel, with her legs covered up.

Lancaster, 38, who is married to rock singer Rod Stewart, was wearing one of her usual ultra-short dresses and black tights, but when they developed a ladder she took them off.

“It seems Penny thought she was showing a bit too much bare leg as she got two friends to cover up her legs with a shawl as she left the venue when she saw snappers were waiting,” the Daily Express quoted a source as saying.

“When she then got in the car, she made sure her legs were clamped closely together to avoid any unnecessary display of flesh. She seemed to find it all highly amusing,” the source added. (ANI)

Brangelina kids ‘run riot in hotel corridor’ while mum, dad attend BAFTA

London, February 10 (ANI): Little would have Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie known that their kids would reportedly be running riot while they attended the BAFTA ceremony in London.

Other guests at the posh Dorchester Hotel were said to have been moaning about the noise made by seven-year-old Maddox, five-year-old Pax, three-year-old Zahara and two-year-old Shiloh.

“They were running up and down the hallway for over an hour,” the Sun quoted a troubled guest as saying.

“Their nanny tried to quieten them down and move them out the way when people came through.

“But she had her hands full with the four of them,” the guest added. (ANI)

Brangelina ‘shun posh eateries for pre-Bafta meal at Indian curry house’

London, February 10 (ANI): Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were said to have given a cold shoulder to London’s posh restaurants to enjoy a meal at a local curry house just before the BAFTA ceremony.

The couple, who were staying at the Dorchester hotel on Park Lane, had apparently ditched the Alain Ducasse restaurant to dine at the Noor Jahan, an Indian restaurant in South Kensington.

According to Shauyab Ahmed, part-owner of the restaurant, the pair were later joined by their celebrity friends Claudia Schiffer, her director hubby Matthew Vaughn and actor Robert Downey Junior.

“They booked a table for 12 at 7.30pm and were a bit late arriving, but that was OK. The other customers loved it and were very happy to see them,” the Telegraph quoted Ahmed as saying.

It was further alleged that the A-listers feasted on vegetable samosas, tandoori lamb chops and the house special, lamb passanda – a Vaughn favourite, who apparently recommended the 40-seat restaurant.

Ahmed added: “Matthew comes in here all the time with Claudia. He loves the lamb passanda,he always has that. Brad and Angelina seemed to love the food, too. They ate it all.” (ANI)
