Cong fields Sharma from Rajasthan

New Delhi, June 5 — Commerce Minister Anand Sharma, whose Rajya Sabha term ended two months back, is being fielded for the Upper House from Rajasthan. Sharma had to get reelected within six months to continue as minister. As the Congress cannot get him reelected from his home state, Himachal Pradesh, Sharma is being shifted to Congress-ruled Rajasthan. The party also fielded Ask Ali Tak, a Muslim, and Narendra Budhiana, a Jat, for the other two seats in Rajasthan. The BJP fielded former Lok Sabha member V.B. Singh from the state.

“The party president has been authorised to decide the candidates for the second seat in Rajasthan, the third seat for Karnataka, one seat from Jharkhand and the third seat from Orissa in consultation with the state prabharis,” said BJP leader Ananth Kumar. This means that it will have to negotiate with the JMM. The names of Hema Malini, Najma Heptullah and Smriti Irani are doing the rounds for the second Rajasthan seat.

Tracking the top job in Rlys

Even as government circles were abuzz over whether Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar would get another extension, a parallel succession drama was being played out in the Railways Ministry over who would succeed outgoing Railway Board Chairman S S Khurana. This side show is still not over.

Despite Railway Board’s Member Traffic Vivek Sahai having remained a frontrunner, doubts are now being raised over his candidature with reports of him having fallen out of favour with Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee doing the rounds. But those batting for Sahai were quick to point out that his elevation from the post of Northern Railway’s General Manager to Member Traffic, by getting the then Member Traffic Sri Prakash to make a voluntary exit from service just 20 days before his retirement, was meant to ensure that Sahai was in line for the top job.

But insiders believe things are not going according to script as other eligible members have started lobbying. Meanwhile, Khurana, who led a team of senior officials to West Bengal following last week’s train crash, failed to get an audience with Mamata before demitting office.

As per sources, Khurana kept trying to meet Mamata till the last minute, but she was too occupied with the accident and the preparations for the West Bengal civic elections. So she chose not to meet any of the railway officials who had flown in from Delhi.

Indo-Pak trust deficit looms large over Bhutan SAARC summit

New Delhi, Apr.21 (ANI): Persisting ambiguity over the possibility of an Indo-Pak dialogue taking place on the sidelines of next week”s SAARC summit in Bhutan, has once again hijacked attention from broader and more complex issues involving this nearly 25-year-old regional grouping.

Whether the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, will meet his Pakistani counterpart,Yousuf Raza Gilani? Whether it will be a structured dialogue or a photo op?, Whether India is ready to resume the stalled “composite dialogue” with Pakistan during the summit? All of these speculations are doing the rounds.

Scant attention, however, is being paid to the SAARC agenda, which does not mandate its members to raise or discuss bilateral issues.

But, paradoxically, bilateral issues have always dominated multilateral agenda and the sixteenth SAARC Summit in Thimpu is not expected to be any different from the past.

The “trust deficit” in the Indo-Pak relationship has time and again eclipsed and cast a shadow on multilateral agenda of the SAARC. It has remained a source of frustration for smaller nations like Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal and Bhutan.

According to sources, three agreements, the Trade in Services in SAFTA, Natural Disaster Response Mechanism and the Convention on Cooperation on Environment have been finalized by the SAARC Expert committee meeting, which took place in Thimpu in March.

But at the last minute, Pakistan vetoed the SAARC Natural Disaster Response Mechanism that was intended to build a permanent team of rescuers from all eight nations who could provide contingency rescue services in the case of emergencies or natural catastrophes.

Islamabad has reportedly scuttled the mechanism because it is wary of opening its borders to Indian rescue workers.

Analysts believe this move by Islamabad is not only counter-productive for itself and India, but will also be a setback to other smaller nations like Maldives, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka which are prone to marine disasters.

Located along the high seismic zone of the Himalayas, Afghanistan and Nepal could have been major beneficiaries of the regional mechanism.

Over the years, SAARC nations have been pushing for connectivity and free transit. Talks of a visa free regime are also heard aloud at the forum, but nothing has been translated into reality.

With countries like Afghanistan, Nepal and Bhutan landlocked, overcoming high transaction costs due to poor trade facilitation appears to be a priority for the regional grouping.

Pakistan has shown no cooperation in opening a transit route to Afghanistan for Indian goods.

Similarly Bangladesh wants India to open up a transit route to Nepal and Bhutan.

This can only happen if there is unanimity, especially among the larger member nations like India and Pakistan.

The implementation of the SAFTA in real terms still seems a distant dream.(ANI)

RCB owner Mallya backs beleagured IPL chief Lalit Modi

Bangalore, Apr.20 (ANI): Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) owner Vijay Mallya has strongly supported IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi, saying that he is the creator and the brains behind a highly successful and lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL).

Mallya said IPL owes its success to Modi and said that he was perplexed and amused by the hue and cry raised over trans-border transactions by some IPL franchisees.

“Unfortunately, this entire issue has snowballed into an unnecessary storm. As far as I”m concerned, I”m full of appreciation for what Lalit Modi has delivered through the IPL. If he has issues with the Government of India, that”s his private matter and he needs to deal with it,” said Mallya.

“Cross-border transaction is part and parcel of the growth and development of Indian economy. Just because some investment has been routed through Mauritius doesn”t make it tainted investment,” Mallya added.

He was referring to Modi’s decision to reveal the ownership of IPL Kochi franchise, which cost Shashi Tharoor his ministerial job.

With allegations of money laundering and betting doing the rounds, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said that all aspects, including the sources and routes of funding of IPL teams, will be thoroughly probed.

He said RCB had a clean slate and he had no doubts that other franchises also had unsullied record.

He also rejected reports of franchise owners meeting with BCCI officials on the cash row and ownership issue.

A private television channel quoted him as saying: “I”m not aware of any such meeting. But if there is a meeting of the franchise owners, I will attend as I always do. But as of now, I”m not aware of any such initiative to dislodge Modi.” (ANI)

Fuel leak forces Holden to recall 9,000 sedans

As the world’s biggest carmaker tries to restore confidence in the Toyota brand, Holden in Australia faces its own big safety problem.

The company is recalling 9,000 of its big-selling Cruze sedans because of concerns about potential fuel leaks.

The small car was launched in June last year and is selling at the rate of about 2,000 a month.

Holden hopes a locally built version of the car will one day replace the Commodore as its top selling car.

Concerns with the fuel feed hose on Holden’s Cruze sedan had been doing the rounds of dealers for weeks following reports of fuel leaks.

Late yesterday Holden announced it was asking more than 9,000 owners of the 2010 Cruze models fitted with 1.8-litre petrol engines to return the cars to their dealers to fix the problem.

The company has identified a manufacturing problem with the fuel feed hose.

Holden says it is aware of 71 cases of possible fuel leaks but that no accidents or injuries have been reported.

The popular small car is manufactured in Korea but is due to be built at Holden’s plant in Adelaide from next year, along with a hatchback version.

Marton Pettendy, managing editor of GoAuto online, says it is embarrassing because the Cruze is an important car for Holden.

“It’s a fairly embarrassing first recall for Holden’s Cruze which is its all new small car entrant in Australia – Australia’s biggest segment,” he said.

“It is the model Holden hopes to perhaps one day replace lost sales of Commodores with.

“Interestingly, Holden issued a stop delivery notice on March 3 to its dealers but it took until yesterday to announce the official recall.

“There are a number of hurdles car companies have to go through before the recall notice is made.”

It is the third recall affecting Holden this year, following defects with its Captiva and its Combo van.

Recalls have become commonplace in the automotive industry this year, which began with Toyota recalling more than 8.5 million cars including its Prius hybrid.

Mr Pettendy says for Toyota it is likely to be seen as a welcome diversion from its own woes.

“Having said that, only 2,000-odd Prius’ have been recalled in Australia from more than eight million globally – so this is four times the number of that,” he said.

He says the problem that prompted the recall is “very much a manufacturing issue out of the Korean factory”.

“The bigger issue for Holden is virtually a month’s worth of lost sales of its significant selling car,” he said.

“In a depressed industry any hit like that is going to hurt them, but the pipeline will bank up and once those cars are fixed they will be back into dealers and on the roads again.”

Musharraf hints at comeback through ‘registered’ All Pakistan Muslim League

Washington, Mar.16 (ANI): Former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf has hinted of a come back to the country’s political stage through a party named the All Pakistan Muslim League.

Talking to media persons before a lecture in Seattle, Musharraf said his party has been registered, but reiterated that he would return to Pakistan only when he believes there is enough support for him.

“I think the party has been registered. If I have to just go there and join the political fray and be involved in accusations and counter-accusations…like most politicians are doing, then I am not interested in that kind of politics,”The Seattle time quoted Musharraf, as saying.

Later, talking to an audience of hundreds of people, largely Pakistani Americans, in Bellevue, Musharraf said the Taliban’s brand of Islamic extremism poses a serious threat to the nation.

“We need to ask ourselves, do we or don’t we want a Taliban and Al Qaeda culture in Pakistan … because every action then flows from that decision,” Musharraf said.

Reports regarding Musharraf, who is currently living in London on an ‘unannounced’ exile, coming back to Pakistan have been doing the rounds for the past year or so with the former general saying he would return if the country wants him to do so.

Musharraf, however, has not set a date for his return to Pakistan.

Some believe that he may never come back as he fears being prosecuted for imposing emergency in the state through unconstitutional steps in 2007. (ANI)

Sacked Asian expats sit out slump in the sunshine

Hong Kong – A black joke doing the rounds in Asian financial circles goes like this: Question: “What’s the definition of an optimist?” Answer: “A banker who has five shirts ironed on a Sunday.”

It is a joke Barry Emmerton – who lost his 15,500-US-dollar-a month job as an interest rates derivatives specialist – can afford to smile at, even though the shirt question is already irrelevant for him.

Today, instead of waking up to the prospect of another nerve-wracking week in Hong Kong’s money markets, the
34-year-old Briton is listening to the sound of the sea in a tropical beach house in the Philippines with his wife and
4-year-old daughter.

Earlier this month, he handed over the keys to his high-rent Hong Kong apartment, put furniture and belongings into storage and, with just three small suitcases, a suit bag and a laptop computer, set out with his family on the adventure of a lifetime.

Emmerton is one of a growing number of expatriates who have lost well-paid jobs in the financial sector and, rather than return home, put their worldly possessions in storage and head off to make the most of their unexpected freedom.

Two major Hong Kong relocation companies say they have seen a sharp rise in orders for storage facilities that far outstrip calls and orders from expatriates intent on shipping their things back home.

For Emmerton, putting his goods in storage for 200 US dollars a month means he can swap executive job hunting for life in a thatched bamboo beach home in Bohol in the Philippines.

Just by living off the rental income from his two London properties, his family can live there indefinitely without touching a dollar of their savings, he calculated.

The first month in a two-storey beach home in the Alumbung resort 800 kilometres south of Manila will cost them
1,000 US dollars. “After that, we’ll look around and get something for around half the price, I reckon,” said Emmerton who has a monthly budget of 1,500 US dollars.

Emmerton admits he first felt “panic and terror” when he found himself jobless in December. He quickly lined up two interviews, both of which were cancelled at short notice as the economic crisis deepened.

A friend then suggested he should take a six-month career break, planting an idea that slowly grew into a plan.

Once the decision was made, Emmerton’s anxieties lifted. “Before, there was the uncertainly – the worry over the job interviews, the contract on this apartment.

“But since we handed in our notice and booked our flights, I haven’t been able to stop smiling about it.”

The Emmertons opted for Bohol because it has good internet access and daily flight connections to major cities, meaning that he can be at any job interview in a matter of hours.

“Some people are a bit taken aback when I tell them what we’re doing,” he said. “But everyone I know is looking over their shoulder at the moment. It’s an insecure world. There are jobs coming up in London but there are 300 people fighting for each one.

“While we are still in Asia, I can look for out for work in Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney, and live this great lifestyle in the meantime.”

It is a lifestyle option a growing number of expatriate victims of the economic slump are considering. Sherry Liu, general manager for the Hong Kong relocations division of international moving company Crown, said there had been a 100-per-cent increase in inquiries about storage in the first quarter of 2009.

Ben Tyrrell, director of Hong Kong removals company Relocasia, said there had been an “absolutely massive” rise in people heading out on career breaks.

“When the downturn first started, we were moving a lot of panicked people back to their parents’ homes overseas. In November and December, there was a definite switch,” he said.

“People started thinking ‘Hang on, let’s look at putting our things in storage. It’s affordable, it keeps our options open and we can use the money we would be spending on rent to go and enjoy our lives’.”

Tyrrell said recent clients to put their goods in storage included an Airbus executive who had gone off to ride a motorcycle across Nepal and settle in Kathmandu, and a former Macau casino executive who had left to teach English in Cambodia.

Mathew Gollop, group managing director of recruitment company Connected Group, said: “In the worst-case scenario, you’ll get a job offer two weeks after you leave. In the best-case scenario, you’ll be sitting on a beach while everyone else is scrambling around looking for work.”

Emmerton argued: “No one is going to look at your CV and in this day and age and question something like this. Why stay in Hong Kong going through all your savings when you can do something like this instead?”

As he packed the last of his family’s belongings, Emmerton said with a happy grin: “I already know what a typical day will be like.

“I’ll get up and have breakfast. Then I’ll run a couple of miles up and down the beach, sit down in the garden for a couple of hours and play with [daughter] Chloe, go to lunch, go fishing, come home for some dinner, put my daughter to bed – then sit outside with a cold beer and listen to the sound of the sea and the chirruping of the insects.” (dpa)

Is Ted Kennedy ready to handover political baton to wife Vicki?

Boston (US), Feb.21 (ANI): Rumors are doing the rounds that a very sick Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy may pass on his political baton to wife Vicki, as he continues to battle with brain cancer.

Kennedy’s friends say that his battle with brain cancer has entered its final rounds, and that he is presently at an undisclosed location in Florida, resting and sailing.

“He’s someplace sunny, near the water, where he can rest and sail. Time is of the essence. It’s very sad,” the Boston Globe quoted one of his friends, as saying.

Kennedy was rushed to the hospital after he collapsed during a luncheon that followed President Obama’s inauguration, and returned to vote on the stimulus bill.

Although family members have said publicly that the senator is doing “good,” privately those close to Kennedy say he may only have a few months to live.

Kennedy was diagnosed last May with a malignant brain tumor and his prognosis was poor. According to pals, the senator spent every day that he could last summer on the waters off Hyannisport sailing his beloved yacht, Mya.

He has returned to Washington only sporadically since being diagnosed – most dramatically a month after his first seizure to cast the deciding vote on an important Medicare bill.

Because of Kennedy’s condition, there has been off-the-record speculation about the future of his Senate seat.

A Boston broadsheet described the former Victoria Reggie as “a great lawyer” with “tremendous political skills” and “great sense of humor.”

It portrayed her family as Kennedy doppelgangers and Vicki’s father, Edmund Reggie, as one of Ted’s closest companions.

No member of Ted’s family has said anything to the Globe on the record so far.

Word on the Hill is that some Kennedy staffers are quite unhappy with the rumors that are in circulation, finding it far too critical of Ted.

But, they also admit that Vicki has been a stabilizing influence on Ted. She is credited with helping him to secure re-election in a hard-fought battle with Mitt Romney after the near-career-destroying Palm Beach rape scandal.

Should Kennedy be unable to finish out his senate term, which ends in 2012, a special election must be held within 145 to 160 days of the seat becoming vacant.

The big question is: Will Kennedy make it known that he wants his wife to succeed him. (ANI)
