Ex-Mossad head says ‘Netanyahu agreed to Golan pullout’

Jerusalem, Sep.10 (ANI): Former Mossad head Danny Yatom has claimed that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu agreed to withdraw Israeli troops from the entire Golan Heights during his first term in exchange for a peace deal with Syria and the normalization of ties between Jerusalem and Damascus. Yatom told Israel Radio that the proof for his claim was a document that appears in his new book, in which Ron Lauder, Netanyahu’s special envoy for talks with Syria at the time, reported the prime minister’s agreement to then-US president Bill Clinton.

The former Mossad chief said that although Netanyahu’s agreement didn’t bind him now, 11 years later, “he has to admit” that he did agree to withdraw from the territory.

Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud), however, told the radio station that the prime minister had not agreed to such a pullout and had repeated it on numerous occasions.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Yatom also told Army Radio on Wednesday night that only a military strike would stop Iran from attaining nuclear arms status. (ANI)

CPI (M) defends Buddha over skipping politburo meet

New Delhi, Sep 5 (ANI): The Communist Party of India (Marxist) dismissed reports that West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was deliberately avoiding party’s two-day politburo meet, which began today on Saturday in the national capital.

According to reports, senior party leaders including Brinda Karat claimed that Buddhadeb had just recovered from viral fever and was advised by doctors to take rest, forcing party members urging him to stay back in Kolkata.

The CPI(M) Politburo is meeting to finalise a document to deal with its organisational problems, which led to its defeat in the recent polls in West Bengal and Kerala.

It is being assumed that topics regarding Lalgarh could be raised during the two-day meet, may have prompted Buddhadeb to give the meeting a miss.

It is also said that Buddhadeb is upset over reports of his successor or deputy being selected during the meet.

Differences between the West Bengal Chief Minister and CPI (M) leaders have been reported ever since party’s failure in the Lok Sabha elections, especially after the defeat they experienced in West Bengal during Lok Sabha polls. (ANI)

Nuke Sub, Aircraft Carrier in Kalam’s vision 2020 for Andamans

Port Blair (Andaman and Nicobar Islands), Sep 4 (ANI): Former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on Friday unveiled a vision document for the strategic development of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the year 2020.

Inaugurating a national seminar on ‘Security and Development of the Andaman and Nicobar islands’ here, Dr Kalam said that a 250 mw nuclear power station on one of the islands would form the core of the development programme.

Dr Kalam said the islands being a vital part of the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) of the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) would have “enhanced significance” in the next decade.

He further said that the ANC should have bases for static aircraft carrier and a nuclear,

Dr Kalam also called upon the Armed Forces to evolve an effective security plan for underneath the sea, at sea level and in air.

“The security plan which you evolve should ensure that there is no unauthorised occupation of the vacant islands,”said Dr Kalam.

Meanwhile, Commander-in-Chief of the ANC, Vice Admiral Vijay Shankar, said that the location of these islands confers a geostrategic advantage.

“Its economic and forest potential dictates a sound security presence,” he added.

Top defence and security experts, including Deputy National Security Advisor Shekhar Dutt, former Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran and Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India R Chidambaram, are attending the two-day seminar. (ANI)

London council in dock for terming Pakistan origin pupil ‘Pakis’

London, Aug. 26 (ANI): A London council has come under fire for describing Pakistani origin pupils who attend the borough’s school as ‘Pakis’.

Conservative-controlled Redbridge Council in east London, however, has defended the usage of term in an official document that provides a breakdown of the ethnic background of pupils as a “computer error”.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission said that the document had been passed to its legal enforcement team, The Guardian reports.
“The council must know that a generation of Asians in east London grew up in the 1970s with the threat of violence from ‘Paki-bashing’ and with its association with skinhead gang culture. It is almost impossible to believe that anyone would fail to understand how racially charged the word Paki is,” said Kevin Blowe, of anti-racist organisation Newham Monitoring Project.

Following the criticism, the council officials had to issue a revised statement condemning the use of the word.
“Redbridge council fully accepts the use of this abbreviated term is wholly unacceptable and inappropriate and would never condone the use of such language.

“Having looked at the spreadsheet, in addition to the unacceptable term ‘Paki’ the document also contains a variety of abbreviations and spelling mistakes and was circulated in error.

“When this was realised at an away day, those present were asked to hand in the document so they could be destroyed. The author of the spreadsheet apologised,” a council statement said.
Keith Vaz, who chairs the Commons home affairs select committee, said: “It is important that councils are careful to avoid the use of offensive terms in both internal and external communications. I welcome the action the council has taken.” (ANI)

Twilight author Stephenie Meyer accused of plagiarism

London, Aug 21 (ANI): Twilight author Stephenie Meyer has been accused of plagiarism by an American woman.

Jordan Scott has alleged that the 2008 novel Breaking Dawn has a “striking and substantial similarity” to her 2006 fantasy The Nocturne.

She has now sent a cease and desist letter to the publishers of the fourth book in the hit Twilight series.

Scott has also filed a lawsuit to stop the sale of the novel and seek damages, reports the Daily Express.

According to TMZ.com, Scott notes in legal document that the two texts “show striking, articulable and substantial similarities in the… plot lines, themes, dialogue, mood, setting, pace, characters, sequence of events (and) ideas.”

Another argument is that the new book is a “significant literary departure from (Meyer’s) early books” and appears to be “written by a teenager” – just as Jordan’s novel does, as she started writing it when she was just 15.

However, Meyer insists that the charges are “completely without merit.”

This is not just the first time that Meyer has been accused of plagiarism.

Her former college roommate Heidi Stanton had filed a lawsuit earlier this year claiming that the hit series was based on a short story she wrote while both of them studied at Brigham Young University, Utah. (ANI)

Holbrooke rejects reports about stationing Marines in Islamabad

Islamabad, Aug.19 (ANI): US Special Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke has rejected reports about the stationing of US Marines in Islamabad.

Sources said during his meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari, Holbrooke clarified that the massive expansion of the US embassy in Islamabad was primarily to accommodate all US staff.

Foreign Minister Shah Ahmed Qureshi also endorsed Holbrooke’s statement saying: “‘We know that no US Marine is coming to Islamabad … Some media outlets have wrongly reported in this context.”

It may be noted that media reports, based on a US State Department document, claimed that the Obama government was constructing a Marine House in Islamabad to accommodate at least 1000 marines at a cost of 112.5 million dollars.

The Obama Administration is about to spend 405 million dollars for the reconstruction and refurbishment of the main embassy building and 111 million dollars for constructing a new complex for 330 personnel. A further 197 million dollars would be spent for construction of a housing unit for about 250 personnel.

18 acres of land has already been acquired by the US for the project for a meager one billion rupees, and a Turkish firm has already built a 153-room compound for the embassy.

The US is planning to send about 1000 additional staff to Pakistan, where 750 US officials are already stationed against a sanctioned strength of only 350 personnel.

During the meeting, Zardari told Holbrooke that early adoption of legislation in the US on Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (RoZ) was necessary to bring social and political stability in the region.

Holbrooke said the prime motive of his visit was to refocus US policy on the region and to support Pakistan.

“President Obama’s decision to preside over along with President Zardari the forthcoming meeting of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan reflected the US government’s desire to support any initiative aimed at lending critical strategic and economic support to Pakistan,” the Dawn quoted Holbrooke, as saying. China cites technical hitches for not supporting ban on Jaish.

New Delhi, Aug.13 (ANI): China continues to remain reluctant about supporting India’s proposal at the United Nations to place sanctions on the Jaish-e-Mohammad.

ANI has learnt that in the recent meeting between the Special Representatives of the two countries led by National Security Adviser M K Narayanan and Chinese State Councillor Dai Bingguo, the Chinese Representative cited “technical” reasons for not supporting the ban on the Jaish-e-Mohammad.

China is the only country in the Security Council which is blocking sanctions on the Jaish and its chief Maulana Masood Azhar.

New Delhi’s argument has been that Azhar benefited from a terror act – the hijacking of IC 814 – and, therefore, there can be no objections on the grounds of evidence.

According to sources, during the 13th round of Special Representatives talks in New Delhi, India handed over more details and documents about Azhar which establish that he is a terrorist.

Beijing’s response, however, was tepid.

India has already submitted detailed documents on the Jaish-e-Mohammad’s terrorist activities to the United Nations, which in turn has been circulated to other nations, including China.

Beijing, however, has been denial mode about receiving the document.

The Maulana Masood Azhar led Jaish-e-Mohammed is a Pakistan based terrorist organization which has orchestrated series of attacks against India.

Once sanctions on an individual or the origination are imposed under UN resolution 1267 which is also known as Al qaeeda and Taliban sanctions, it empowers India to demand action from Pakistan.

After being released from the Indian jail, Masood has been seen in various Pakistani cities addressing huge congregations and is reportedly living undercover within the patronage of the ISI.

Security experts believe that Pakistan is using its close tactical and strategic relations with China to block India’s attempts in the UNSC to ban the Jaish-e-Mohammad.

Earlier, the United Kingdom had shown reluctance to support the ban on the Jaish, but once India submitted details about the group, it agreed to come onboard and support the ban. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)

New UN report takes firm stand on women’s rights in Afghanistan

Kabul (Afghanistan), July 9 (ANI): A new United Nations report has called for an end to the prevailing abuse against women in Afghanistan, and warned that ignoring this culture of impunity will create an environment of political and social insecurity.

The report, titled “Silence is Violence,” documents the increasingly insecure environment for women in public spaces and the failure of state institutions to deal with it, reports the Christian Science Monitor.

The document, which was co-written by the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights (UNHCR) and the UN’s Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), says that the argument that it’s more important to “have security rather than human rights … is absolutely the wrong concept, since you need human rights for sustainable peace.”

Dr. Sima Samar, the chairperson of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission, explained that the denial of women’s rights is usually on the grounds of culture and tradition.

The report documents violence that inhibits participation of women in public life, identifying perpetrators as anti-government elements, local traditional and religious power holders, women’s own families and communities and, in some instances, government authorities.

Sexual violence against women was found to be perpetrated by close family members, staff of prisons and rehabilitation centers, military commanders, and members of illegal armed groups and criminal gangs.

“The pattern of attacks against women operating in the public sphere sends a strong message to all women to stay at home,” says the report.

“This has obvious ramifications for the transformation of Afghanistan, the stated priority of Afghan authorities, and their international supporters.”

“Rhetoric [has not been] matched by reality,” says the head of UNAMA’s human rights unit, Norah Niland.

The UN report and its message were backed at the highest level of the UN’s presence in Afghanistan. It was released in the residence of the UN secretary-general’s special representative, Kai Eide, the top UN diplomat in Afghanistan. (ANI)

Zardari’s daughter to join politics after finishing studies

Islamabad, July 8 (ANI): Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has informed the PPP workers that his daughter Bakhtawar, who is studying in Scotland, would join politics after finishing her education.

“Her (Bakhtawar) and Bilawal’s active participation in politics will be the continuation of the valiant struggle that their mother and grandfather had waged,” Zardari told PPP’s Central Executive Committee on Monday.

The News quoted a senior PPP leader, as saying that Zardari talked about the political plan for his daughter when he spoke on the empowerment and involvement of women in different spheres of life.

“There are some people and families, which love to live for others contrary to the general lot,” he said while referring to his daughter’s future participation in politics.

Zardari added that the objective behind making his sister, Faryal Talpur, chief of the PPP’s women’s wing, was to give women an important say in PPP’s affairs.n the implementation of the Charter of Democracy, Zardari said it was now for the 27-member parliamentary committee’s prerogative to suggest constitutional reforms.

He also pointed out that just two parties – the PPP and the PML-N – were signatories to the CoD while all other parties have nothing to do with this document.

“We can’t close the door on their proposals and should produce a consensus constitutional amendment bill taking all the parties along,” a source quoted Zardari, as saying.(ANI)

Jackson’s death certificate emerges online

London, July 8 (ANI): A copy of Michael Jackson’s death certificate has emerged online, stating the cause of death as “deferred”.

The document apparently lists “entertainment” as the type of business, and his occupation as a “musician”.

The number of years in this occupation is given as 45, which comes as no surprise considering the King of Pop, who died aged 50, became a world celebrity as early as at the age of five, reports The Sun.

His race is marked as “black”, and the informant, who gave the information for the certificate, is shown as his sister La Toya Jackson.

The certificate also said that Forest Lawn Cemetery was a “temporary” disposition of the body, though final burial is “pending at an unknown location”.

The document emerged on tmz.com just hours after the end of his memorial service at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles on July 7. (ANI)

Rudd says navy sex betting ring ‘disturbing’

Canberra (Australia), July 6 (ANI): Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has expressed his dismay over reports of a sex betting ring on board a ship of the Australian Navy.

“Can I say I’m sure the Chief of Navy has all those matters under active investigation and that appropriate action will be taken? These alleged behaviours are disturbing, but it’s important also to get to the facts of it all and we’ll await the investigations by the chief of navy to establish all those facts,” Rudd told reporters here.

Rudd’s comment came after it was revealed that a group of sailors from HMAS Success had been sent home for allegedly organizing a challenge to have sex with as many female crewmates as possible.

The Seven Network reported that the sailors detailed their contest in a document called The Ledger, where dollar values were placed on each woman during an overseas deployment in May.

Larger amounts were offered if the sailors could sleep with a female officer or a lesbian and sailors challenged each other to have sex in various locations, including on top of a pool table, the report said.

The arrangement was discovered while HMAS Success was visiting Singapore.

The captain ordered the sailors to return to Australia immediately after they were formally interviewed.

On Sunday’ Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard called for a full investigation of the incident by the Australian Defence Force.

Gillard said nothing should preclude women from enjoying a full and rewarding career in the Australian Defence Force.

“Obviously this is a matter for our defence forces to deal with and to fully investigate,” Gillard told Network Ten on Sunday.

She said both the government and the nation had been saying for a long time that women should be able to join the army, the navy or air force.

“We don’t want to see anything that precludes women from having a good career in our armed forces if that is what they choose to do with their lives. Clearly these allegations need to be fully investigated,” she said.

The Defence Department confirmed a formal inquiry was underway, but said: “The veracity of any allegations has yet to be confirmed.” (ANI)

Britney’s dad will continue as her legal guardian

Washington, Jul 3 (ANI): ‘Toxic’ hitmaker Britney Spears will still have her father Jamie Spears act as her legal guardian until at least 2010.

Jamie, who has been the conservator of the singer’s estate since her 2008 meltdown, has obtained a 1.5 million dollar bond to continue acting as her guardian, reports Contactmusic.

He filed a legal document on June 28 certifying that he had handed the cash over to the court so that he could remain Britney’s legal guardian until at least the end of this year.

According to RadarOnline, the 1.5 million dollar bond, reportedly made up of Jamie’s own money, has been put in place in a bid to prevent the singer’s assets being pillaged.

It is unclear why the bond was filed so long after the court-ordered conservatorship was introduced last year. (ANI)

Here’s your chance to win ‘The Beatles’ first contract

London, July 2 (ANI): If you are a die-hard Beatles fan, here’s a chance for you to win the first contract signed by the Fab Four-all you have to do is to guess the estimated price of the document today. n the newly launched competition, contestants have to pay 10 pounds to guess the value of the contract.

And the winner would get to take the highly prized document home, reports the Telegraph.

The fab four’s prospective manager, Brian Epstein, offered to sign the band after he was blown away watching them perform in Liverpool’s Cavern Club.

John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr signed the contract in 1962.

The contract bears a mistake where Lennon wrote his name in the wrong part, and it was also signed by some band members’ parents, due to their young ages.

However, the agreement has only changed hands a couple of times over the decades and was acquired for The Imagine Corporation at Christie’s auction house.

Currently insured for 500,000 pounds, the documents is regarded as an irreplaceable piece of musical heritage.

Competition entrants will have to pay 10 pounds for the chance to estimate the contract’s value, as estimated by a panel of experts, if it had been put up for auction in April 2008 at a London auction house.

The winner, who will be announced in around six weeks time, has to match the panel’s estimated value.

One can enter the competition by visiting imagine.uk.com. (ANI)

Popescu denies being Romanian spy

London, June 30(ANI): Former Romanian football player Gheorghe Popescu, who had played for various clubs around the world, has denied allegations that he was an informer of the feared Communist secret police in Romania in the 1980s.

Romanian newspaper the Daily Adevarul has claimed Popescu had been an informant of Securitate -the secret service of Communist Romania- from 1986 to 1989. It is said he provided information to the feared organisation.

Popescu, who has played for clubs in -England, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Turkey and Germany- called the report a big lie, and claimed that he was being targeted by a hate campaign as he bids to head Romania’s Football Association.

Meanwhile, the footballer has disclosed that he was approached by the secret police to work for them, but he claims that he refused their offer.

“My conscience is clear,” the Telegraph quoted Popescu, as saying.

Popescu highlighted that he had signed a document, which promised to defend the national interests during Nicolae Ceausescu’s regime. However, he says it was a common practice for Romanian players who wanted to play for international teams.

A former Romanian captain, Popescu stands among Romania’s all-time most capped players with 115, in which he scored 16 goals. He played for his country in the 1990, 1994, and 1998 World Cups, Euro 96 and Euro 2000.

Popescu was never outside the top 4 in the Romanian Footballer of the Year awards for 13 years from 1989 until 2001. He was recently voted into Romanian footballs all-time World Cup team. (ANI)

Nina Wang’s alleged lover claims her multi-billion-dollar fortune

London, June 30 (ANI): A man claiming to be the lover of Asia’s richest woman, Nina Wang, has insisted that a will that left her multi-billion-dollar fortune to him was not a forgery.

The document is at the centre of a high-profile court battle over the estate of one of Hong Kong’s most colorful personalities, Sky News reports.

Businesswoman Nina Wang, who died at age 69 of cancer in 2007, was ranked in Forbes magazine as the world’s 204th richest person with a fortune of 4.2 billion dollars.

Feng shui adviser Tony Chan, 49, said he and Wang were lovers and she left her money to him out of genuine affection in a 2006 will.

However, a foundation set up by Wang and her late husband has staked a claim to her estate under a separate will made in 2002.

During a testy court hearing, the foundation’s lawyer Lawrence Lok asked Chan if he concocted the will himself or had someone else do so on his behalf.

“Absolutely not. You’re wrongly accusing me. I never thought she would do that. She really loved me very deeply,” he added.

In the years before her death, Wang gave Chan a total of 266 million dollars in 2005 and 2006.

“It was really a gift. Because I feel that she really loved me, that’s why she gave me the money. She had always been giving me money,” Chan said.

He said his relationship with Wang started in 1992, but he kept it secret from everyone except his wife.

Wang inherited her husband’s fortune after an eight-year court battle against her father-in-law. Her husband was abducted in 1990 and, despite the family paying 20 million pounds in ransom, he was never released and his body never found.

Wang went on to build her husband’s company, Chinachem, into a massive property developer. (ANI)

Treating juvenile offenders’ physical and mental health needs critical to rehabilitation

Washington, June 20 (ANI): Conducting a comprehensive review of past studies into the health of young offenders undertaken in the US, UK, Europe and Australia since 1997, researchers at the University of Adelaide have come to the conclusion that the physical and mental health needs of juvenile offenders should be treated as a priority, if offenders held in detention have any real hope of rehabilitation.

“Health – both mental and physical health – is an issue that has a serious impact on young offenders,” says lead study author Dr. Anne Wilson, Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Nursing.

“The health of young offenders is commonly poorer in comparison with the general youth population. Previous studies document the growing concern for the health of young offenders, including their risk-related behaviours, mental health, social and family problems, and other physical health deficits.

“The underlying problems affecting these young offenders need to be addressed as a priority if they are to be successfully rehabilitated and reintegrated into the community,” she adds.

Phillip Tully, a PhD student in the School of Psychology who co-authored the study, says that the review identifies various factors for successful mental health and trauma care-such as improving existing mental health services; identifying mental health problems with a high-quality screening process; ongoing support within and outside of secure care; improving the availability of services; and linking offenders directly to primary health or mental health services on release.

The researchers believe that improving young offenders’ access to health care could go some way to addressing their poor physical health status.

“However, additional social factors, such as education, peer support and family support, are likely to determine whether young offenders access the services they need,” says Dr. Wilson.

“There is little doubt that those released from secure care face immense challenges to maintaining their health and well-being.

“Many young offenders live in social conditions that are not conducive to achieving a healthy state. They are commonly exposed to poverty, social disadvantage, abuse and family dysfunction, and these factors may promote high-risk behaviors such as substance abuse, coping problems, truancy and low educational attainment.

“These social, familial, personal and peer-group factors can lead to repeat offender behaviour and to a generational cycle of health problems. This is most clearly seen in neighbourhoods where drugs are readily available to young people, where they are exposed to adult substance abuse, live in single-parent households, have caregivers with low levels of education, and receive government aid,” she adds.

According to her, effective planning is needed to address ongoing health issues experienced by young offenders when they are released from detention.

“Young offenders have diverse and complex needs. By utilizing a comprehensive screening measure, individual plans can be formulated upon the offender’s admission to secure care, with a view to looking ahead to their eventual discharge and their return to society.”

The study has been reported in the Australian Journal of Primary Health. (ANI)
