Obama baiter Wilson has an Indian American fan base

Washington, Sep.16 (ANI): He may have faced derisive comments and stares for heckling President Barack Obama in Congress during an address on healthcare reform, but Republican South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson retains the affection for one ethnic group — Indian Americans.

According to Sanjay Puri, the chairman of the US Indian Political Action Committee (USPAC), the Indian American community has by and large had a positive relationship with Wilson, formerly co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans.

Wilson co-sponsored a bill that was approved in 2007, which recognized the significance of the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali.

He also strongly advocated passage of a landmark accord that gave India access to civilian nuclear technology last year despite its refusal to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Puri, said Wilson, 62, is a fixture at South Asia-related events in Washington.

Wilson, speaking at a congressional hearing in June, said that his father traveled across the subcontinent during World War II as part of the “Flying Tigers,” the volunteer US air force that defended China against imperial Japan. (ANI)

‘Main Aur Mrs Khanna’ all set to woo audience

Mumbai, Sep 9 (ANI): Bollywood’s latest romantic drama featuring some of the top actors is all set to woo the audiences with its originality.

Directed by, Prem Soni, ‘Main Aur Mrs Khanna’, is an unusual story of passion, love and an extra-marital affair.

The film starring Kareena Kapoor, Salman Khan and Sohail Khan is a simple ordinary story set in a contemporary fashion.

Targeted at the youth, the film also deals with the issues surrounding career over love which is one of the main reasons for an unstable marriage in today’s time.

“It is an original film with original storyline. Coming from close people of mine, family friends. So it’s sketched from there. So its completely original, no similarity whatsoever,” said Prem Soni, director.

The film revolves around the lives of Samir Khanna, played by Salman Khan and Raina, played by Kareena Kapoor, who have a fairy tale marriage.

Samir gets his dream job and the couple have a great life until one mistake ruins it all.

According to Kareena, the film has been made from the point of view of the woman and is a journey of a girl’s life.

“For me, I think the girl’s role was very strong. She is the protagonist of the film. Whatever story is told in the film is from her point of view. So it’s a journey of a girl’s life and after marriage, after she gets married to Samir, how she makes a friend and what happens. For me it was a contemporary idea and an interesting role for me,” said Kareena.

The film is set to be released at Diwali. (ANI)

Real estate prices set for 20% downward correction

Real estate developers are planning another round of price correction – from 15% to 20% – during the second quarter of fiscal 2010 in certain metros. This comes at a time when some top builders are feeling the pressure to sell off their standing inventories as they have no other option left but cut real estate prices further, says industry experts. Recently, the government announced a third stimulus package after which realty bigwigs are striving hard towards affordable housing development and converting them into actual sales by announcing 25% to 40% dip in property prices.

Lalit Kumar Jain, chairman, Kumar Builders, and vice-president, CREDAI, told FE, “We are evaluating plans to reduce prices of affordable apartments by another 15% to 20% before Diwali. Due to the economic slowdown, end buyers are saving more, instead of investing in properties. Hence, we believe interest rates could be reduced further during the next quarter which end-buyers are currently awaiting.”

A top official from Kalpataru Properties, on condition of anonymity, said that developers who have acquired land at least six years back will be able to offer homes at affordable current market rates unlike developers who would have recently bought land during prevailing market rate in fiscal 2009. “We expect huge demand to emerge in the real estate market in the next two to three months once the interest rates are reduced further. We have reduced property prices by 35% in December 2008 in western suburbs and are witnessing huge inquiries,” he added. Anshul Jain, CEO-India, DTZ International Property Advisors, said, “There is a need for high-end residential property prices to drop by 35%, and mid-end to come down by 25% from the peak prices based on the localities. Builders have been offering free gifts, cars, followed by discounting of prices but not to the extent of 35%, especially for new projects. Further discounts is only going to add before the peak prices in general. Hence, builders will move on the right track if they cut property prices further.”

Despite using private equity funds is becoming more expensive for developers, private equity investments are expected to continue as valuations are becoming more realistic, he added.

26/11 probe: FBI wants to quiz Zarar, Qama

Press Trust of India
Thursday, March 05, 2009 6:50 PM (New Delhi)

FBI wants to question two Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists–Abdul Wajid alias ‘Zarar Shah’ and Mazhar Iqbal alias ‘Abu Al Qama’– in a bid to unravel the entire conspiracy in the execution of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack including whether they had any links with the Pakistan Government.

The two militants, whose real identity was ascertained following increased cooperation between central security agencies and the FBI, were believed to be the key to the entire 26/11 plot and their inputs would be vital to know if any official agency in Pakistan provided help, official sources said in Delhi.

This issue has been discussed between the FBI and sleuths of Central security agencies and the US investigating agency had also asked Pakistan to provide access to both of them, they said.

FBI has registered a case in the Mumbai terror strikes as six US citizens also fell prey in the attack, the sources said. The real identity of ‘Zarar Shah’ and ‘Abu Al Qama’ was found after both Indian intelligence agencies and FBI carried out a painstaking exercise including gathering voice samples and questioning Lashkar terrorists held within India and abroad.

Wajid alias ‘Zarar Shah’ and Iqbal alias ‘Abu Al Qama’ are residents of Pakistan’s Punjab province.

While Iqbal alias Abu Al Qama was a resident of Mandi Tehsil of Punjab, Wajid alias Zarar Shah hailed from Sheikhpura district of the same province, the sources said.

On the role of the two in Mumbai terror strikes, the sources said Iqbal alias Abu Al Qama had been responsible for training the terrorists who carried out the strikes in Mumbai on November 26 last year in which 183 people were killed.

Besides having other aliases like Amjad, Iqbal is wanted in other high-profile cases, including the Red Fort encounter, the attack on Akshardham temple in Gujarat and serial bombings on the eve of Diwali in 2005 in the national capital.

Iqbal is in-charge of Lashkar operations in India except Jammu and Kashmir, the sources said. Voice samples of Wajid, the investigators said, were taken from the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and played in front of other Lashkar operatives arrested by the Indian security agencies and the FBI.

Wajid was in constant touch with the terrorists carrying out the strikes in Mumbai through VoIP, payments for which were made on his behalf in Karchi and Barcelona by Lashkar operatives.

Ajmal Qasab, the lone arrested Lashkar terrorist in the 26/11 case, had named the two as having provided them with training and other facilities in Pakistan. However, he only knew their alias and could not identify their actual identity, the sources added.
