Viagra laced fruit juices flowing in Malaysia!

Kuala Lumpur, Sept 14 (ANI): After being detected in coffee mixtures and sweets, Viagra has now been found in fruit juices.

After raiding more than 30 retailers and distributors dealing in the fruit juice, enforcement officers from the Health Ministry in Malaysia seized several hundred thousand ringgit worth of the product.

This followed after the ministry sent samples of the product for tests which confirmed the presence of sildenafil, reports The New Straits Times Online.

Sildenafil citrate, sold as Viagra, Revatio and various other trade names, is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.

According to a Health Ministry source, this was the first time they had encountered a case where sildenafil had been mixed with fruit juices.

The mixture is potent and deadly to people suffering from heart disease and high blood pressure.

“It was brought to our attention after several people complained to the ministry about the suspicious fruit juice,” the source said.

“The producer and distributor had claimed that the fruit juice had been produced from selected natural herbs which could improve sexual performance of men and women,” the source added.

Following test results, investigations were conducted to identify retailers and distributors involved in selling the fruit juice.

“More than 30 simultaneous raids were carried out nationwide. Officers were also concerned that the retailers and distributors would hide their stocks as the product had also been sold via direct selling,” the source said.

“At the raid at the company’s headquarters in Subang Jaya, three marketing officers and the store caretaker were questioned by authorities,” the source added.

Investigations revealed that the fruit juice had been in the local market for the past six months and had received good response from consumers.

The consumer needs to mix the powder with water before drinking. (ANI)

‘Bruno’ banned in Ukraine over ‘morality damaging’ claims

Washington, July 16(ANI): Ukraine has banned Sasha Baron Cohen’s new comedy film ‘Bruno’ claiming that it will “damage the morality” of locals.

The movie that has been a huge hit in both US and UK has come under fire in the eastern European country for apparently “unjustified” shots of genitals and homosexual sex scenes.

The move to stop the film from being screened in the country came after nine out of the culture ministry’s 14 members agreed to veto its release, Contactmusic reports.

In a letter to the country’s film distributor Sinergia, officials wrote: “The Ukrainian ministry of culture has decided to ban all showings of this film on Ukrainian territory.

“The film contains unjustified showing of genital organs and sexual relations and shows homosexual acts and homosexual perversions in an explicitly realist manner. (It also contains) sadistic manifestations which could damage the morality of citizens.”

The film stars Cohen as gay Austrian fashionista Bruno. (ANI)

Sheila Dikshit calls for action plan on Delhi power crisis

New Delhi, June 30 (ANI): Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday told city’s main power distributor to improve power situation within 15 days, and submit a detailed action plan to meet the crisis by Wednesday.

Dikshit held a meeting with city’s legislators and officials of discom Bombay Suburban Electric Supply (BSES), main power distributor of the city, and warned them that they would have to improve the power situation within 15 days.

“We have told BSES that they have to file an action plan for next 15-20 days by tomorrow in writing. Their Lalit Jalan is coming he has to give me in writing and it will be circulated among MLA and MP’S to see what kind of problems exist in several areas. And if they have some problems they have to talk about it and solve it in any condition. We have given them 15 days saying that by July 15 they’ll have to improve the situation,” said Dikshit.

New Delhi is facing worst power outages, leading to riots over water in many places, several areas in the capital have been facing frequent power cuts, some lasting for 10-12 hours.

Facing severe criticism, Dikshit said that power distribution companies have to buy electricity at any cost to solve the problem.

“We will follow the instructions given by our honourable chief minister. We are buying power at higher rates since last three days. And if need arises then we will continue to buy it at higher rates,” said Arun Kanchan, Chief Executive Officer of BSES.

Dikshit also cautioned the power distributors to pull up their socks for the monsoon. Delhi expects supply of 250 MW more from either northern Uttrakhand or from the southern states by Monday.

With heat wave sweeping across the region, the power demand in the capital had shot up to an all-time high of about 4275 MW, leaving a huge shortfall and resulting in long outages across the city. (ANI)

Danielle Staub of ‘Real Housewives of New Jersey’ has real criminal past

New York, Jun 25 (ANI): Reality TV star Danielle Staub of ‘The Real Housewives of New Jersey’ has been exposed to have a real criminal past.

The court documents posted on TheSmokingGun.com reveals that Staub was involved in a kidnapping and extortion case, which also involved drugs, reports the New York Daily News.

Staub, who had then gone by the name of Beverly Ann Merrill, had placed calls to a kidnapped victim’s father and threatened to cause bodily harm to the hostage unless he came up with some money.

The criminal complaint, dated June 24 1986 and filed in the U.S. District Court in Miami, also accused Staub of cocaine possession with intent to distribute.

As per the story revealed by the website, Merrill had been working with a distributor for a Colombian drug family named Daniel Aguilar.

The partners in crime were out about 24,000 dollars worth of cocaine after a deal went awry. Trying to recoup their loss, they kidnapped the man they blamed for the deal’s failure, named in the complaint as Carmen Centolella.

Then Merill placed calls to Centolella’s father demanding 25,000 dollars in ransom money – or else.

Feds traced the calls and then arrested the duo, who were caught red-handed in a Miami apartment with six kilos of coke and 16,000 dollars in cash.

She was indicted weeks later on eight felony counts, including extortion, cocaine possession, and narcotics conspiracy, and in order to receive a lenient sentence, she agreed to cooperate fully with prosecutors and the FBI.

In November 1986, she was sentenced to five years probation, with her co-conspirator Aguliar getting 15 years in prison.

Even though she has denied her drug use and past as a prostitute on the show, saying only that she was a former pothead, documents on TheSmokingGun.com would seem to contradict her.

Papers have Staub admitting to working for an escort service and being ordered to continue treatment for her severe “Drug history and drug lifestyle”. (ANI)

“Hannah Montana” rocks North American box office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – OMG! OMG!

Sixteen-year-old actress Miley Cyrus became one of the biggest stars in Hollywood on Sunday as her first nonconcert movie topped the North American box office, earning twice as much as Disney had forecast.

Walt Disney Co’s “Hannah Montana: The Movie” sold $34 million worth of tickets at the three-day Easter weekend, as fans of the perky starlet rushed to see the first big-screen adaptation of her hit Disney Channel TV series.

Cyrus returned the favor, turning up with her father and co-star, Billy Ray Cyrus, at theaters in Utah and Tennessee and blogging about her wild weekend on Twitter.

“omgomg! my fans rock! the movie is doing great you guys! omg AND its all cause of you!!!! I LOVE U ALL! IF YOU HAVENT SEEN IT YET CHECK IT!,” she wrote, using the “omg” acronym as shorthand for “Oh, my God.”

As in her TV show, Cyrus plays a regular schoolgirl by day and a pop star by night. But her father (Billy Ray Cyrus) decides she needs to get back to her small-town roots, so takes her on a surprise trip to her old Tennessee home where love and other complications ensue.

Going into the weekend, Disney had hoped “Hannah Montana” would perform in the same range as 2003′s “The Lizzie McGuire Movie,” a vehicle for Disney Channel star Hilary Duff. “Lizzie” opened to $17.3 million in 2003, and ended its domestic run with $42.7 million.

DISNEY SURPRISED

On Sunday, the studio denied that it had deliberately set a low target. “It caught us by surprise. No doubt about it,” said Chuck Viane, the studio’s president of domestic theatrical distribution. “Outside of Wow! what can you say?”

Exit polling showed that women made up 80 percent of moviegoers, and 60 percent of the audience was aged between two and 17, Viane said.

Cyrus’ previous big-screen outing, “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour,” opened with $31 million last year, ending up with $65 million to become the biggest concert movie of all time.

Disney will soon begin shooting another Cyrus movie, “The Last Song,” Viane said.

Cyrus is now a bigger draw than Oscar-winners like Julia Roberts and Jodie Foster, who each had $13 million openings with their last movies, “Duplicity” and “Nim’s Island,” respectively.

Last weekend’s champion “Fast and Furious” slipped to No. 2 with $28.8 million, taking the 10-day total for Universal Pictures’ race-car thriller to $118.0 million. The studio is a unit of General Electric Co’s NBC Universal.

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc’s “Monsters vs. Aliens” was down one at No. 3 with $22.6 million in its third weekend; its total rose to $141 million.

Also new was the dark comedy “Observe and Report,” which opened at No. 4 with $11.1 million, falling short of the expectations of its distributor, Warner Bros. Pictures. The Time Warner Inc.-owned studio had hoped for an opening in the $14 million to $15 million range.

The Japanese-inspired fantasy “Dragonball Evolution” opened at No. 7 with $4.7 million, also a little lower than the modest forecasts of its distributor 20th Century Fox. But the News Corp-owned studio said the film is doing better internationally with sales to date of $37 million.

Cops find going tough on the fake money trial

CHENNAI: The problem of counterfeit currency is growing at an alarming rate. There are 132 land customs check-points , 93 at ports and 36 at
international airports but the racketeers still manage to pump in lakhs of such currency. “The periodic seizures by the various law-enforcing agencies are only the tip of the iceberg. Those caught may not know, most of the time, the brain behind the racket ,” a senior police officer said.

In 2008, the Coimbatore police and banks detected as many as 170 cases of circulation of fake currency against none in 2007. Chennai reported 134 cases of counterfeit currency in 2008 and 7 in 2007.

According to sources, then Union home secretary Madhukar Gupta had sent a confidential report to all state chief secretaries to assign a nodal officer to curb the circulation of fake Indian currency notes (FICNs). Several government agencies were brought on one platform to share information.

“In 2008, banks across TN detected 612 cases of counterfeit currency while the state police unearthed 38. In 2007, banks detected 76 cases and the state police 37,” said CBCID additional director-general of police Archana Ramasundaram.

Sources said that about 5-10 % or Rs ,500 crore of the Rs 2,50,000 crore presently in circulation in the country is estimated to be counterfeit. The total seizure of fake currency in the country is about Rs 15 crore a year. The average life of a currency note is 9 to 10 months. Whenever there is a seizure of fake currency, the RBI announces that notes of a particular series are fake. Information can also be had at www.rbi.org.in.

Most Indian currency notes have 14 salient features. Some of them are watermarks , security thread, intaglio printing , optically variable ink (OVI), seethrough register of flower in front and back registration, number panel, micro letters, ID mark, register, latent image electrolyte water mark, omron anti-copying feature and optically variable ink.

Those arrested can be booked under Section 11 of the Customs Act, 1962, under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities (COFEPOSA) Act, apart from Sections 489 (A) (counterfeiting currency notes), 489 (B) (using as genuine, forged or counterfeit currency notes), 489 (C), 489 (D) and 489 (E) of the IPC.

It hasn’t helped that the country’s borders with Nepal and Bangladesh are porous. The Indo-Bangaldesh border at Dharam Nagar (north Tripura), Karimganj district of Assam and Malda in West Bengal are used to bring FICNs to the north-east . Flights from Dubai, especially to Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Mangalore , are considered sensitive as are those from Colombo to Chennai. Bangalore and Kozhikode are some of the distribution centres of FICNs.

According to DRI sources, the price of an FICN with a face value of Rs 1,000 ranges between Rs 350 and Rs 400 at the time of its entry into India. When it reaches a wholesale distributor, the price goes up to Rs 550-Rs 600 and further rises to Rs 750-Rs 800 at a retailer. According to sources, India’s borders with Pakistan, Nepal and Bangaldesh, the Samjhauta Express from Pakistan, and passengers coming by air from Dubai, Pakistan, Thailand , Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malysia are being monitored to check the flow of fake currency.

Now, a hand-held water sanitizer to help developing problems

Washington, Feb 15 (ANI): Student engineers at the University of Iowa have developed a novel, hand-held device to sanitize water that can save lives of people who lack daily supply of clean water.

Available for just five dollars, the device was designed as a class project by 15 student engineers.

And now it has become a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) first-place-award-winning project

Craig Just, faculty advisor to the UI College of Engineering chapter of the organization Engineers for a Sustainable World, said that the EPA award represented an honour for the students and much more for citizens in developing countries.
We have some of the best students on the planet here at Iowa, and winning the competition was only the beginning. We hope to multiply the 75,000 dollars first-place award 10-fold in the coming year so that we can make a substantial human health impact in our target countries,” he said.

To date, the students have worked with residents of Xicotepec, Mexico and are now planning to make water sanitizers available in Ghana and other developing countries in the future.

“I’ve spoken with a potential industrial partner, a worldwide distributor of chlorine generators designed for pools and spas, that is interested in the effort. These types of partnerships could greatly expand the reach of the project,” said Just.

The study titled ‘More Affordable Handheld Water Sanitizers’ was presented by Just at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Chicago. (ANI)

Based on a best-selling novel, Carey’s emotional comeback was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.

And now, filmmakers are reportedly in talks with studios to find a distributor for ‘Push’. (ANI)
