How bats distinguish between the calls of their own and different species

Washington, May 20 (ANI): Scientists of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Seewiesen have found that bats can distinguish between the calls of their own and different species with their echolocation calls.

As opposed to bird song or the human voice, echolocation calls are primarily used for spatial orientation and search for food and not for communication. Bat species with similar ecological requirements use similar echolocation calls.

However, it was recently shown that bats are able to distinguish conspecifics by their individual calls, somewhat similar to how humans can recognize others by voice.

Now, Maike Schuchmann and Bjorn Siemers of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Seewiesen have been able to prove that echolocation calls carry more information than assumed.

As humans are able to recognize different languages, bats can not only distinguish their own calls from calls of other species, but also differentiate between different species, even if there is an overlap in the call frequency bands.

The scientists set up behavioral experiments with two horseshoe bat species in Bulgaria. They played echolocation calls of the bats’ own species or calls of three different species through ultrasonic loudspeakers and analysed the animals’ reaction.

Both bat species hardly made a mistake in their distinction, neither between own and foreign calls nor foreign and foreign calls.

“Discrimination was however easier for the bats when the call frequency bands were clearly separated from their own”, said Maike Schuchmann, first author of the study.

The study has been published in journal The American Naturalist. (ANI)

Meryl Streep gets college honour

London, May 19 (ANI): Meryl Streep received a top award from New York”s Barnard College at a ceremony on Monday.

The Mamma Mia! star was honoured with the Barnard Medal of Distinction, and she made a heartfelt speech in front of the other graduates.

“Barnard women have advantage and need to look forward to speeding progress in areas of suffering. There is only change, resistance to it, then more change,” the Daily Express quoted her as telling the crowd.

“(Film) Awards have little bearing on my own personal wellbeing and happiness. Being here has helped me dig deep to find something to offer you. And you don”t have to do anything except to make your parents proud. And you already have,” she added. (ANI)

Winning Ashes Down Under will be the icing on England”s cake: Swann

London, May 18 (ANI): Beating Australia is always special, says England off-spinner Graeme Swann in an article for The Sun.

“Every time we beat them, our confidence grows that we can do it again and again,” Swann says.

“There is only one thing which could top the two incredible, emotional highs we have had in the past nine months. And, that is retaining The Ashes this winter in the Aussies” own backyard,” he adds.

“Winning the little urn last August and beating Australia in Sunday”s World Twenty20 final are the greatest moments of my career. To have experienced two feelings like that in less than a year is unbelievable. Now, we are all hungry for a third when we travel Down Under in November,” he says.

Describing the huge high the team felt after securing the title, the off-spinner said: “I have never moved so fast in my life. I am not the quickest across the ground, but I had smoke coming from my heels as we charged out to the middle. We chased Colly until we caught him and then were jumping up and down in a huddle and screaming like five-year-olds. You get punched and elbowed and everything but you do not care. Brilliant stuff.”

“The champagne was spraying in the dressing room and Jimmy Anderson poured a whole bottle down my back. Then we settled down for an hour or two, had a few beers, enjoyed each other”s company and contemplated what had just happened. It was a phenomenal feeling and very similar to The Oval last August,” he adds.

He makes a pointed distinction between the Ashes victory and the World Twenty20 win.

“It was not quite the same, because that was the result of a whole summer”s work, a release after all the ups and downs of the series. This was more a feeling of disbelief, the fact we had beaten the best team in the world with three overs to spare. That is a thumping in Twenty20,” he says.

He also said that he the England batters perform from the physio”s room.

“I am very superstitious and always sit there in Barbados. I have my lucky spot and I never left it,” Swann says.

“The atmosphere for the final was sensational. We were 5,000 miles from home but the ground was awash with flags of St George and the noise was deafening. It got everybody”s goose bumps up,” he concludes. (ANI)

Candy Spelling”s LA home ”world”s most expensive for sale property”

London, April 26 (ANI): Socialite Candy Spelling has put up her LA home for sale at a whopping 93.75 million pounds.

The Beverly Hills mansion is among the only five homes in the US that are on sale for over 62.5 million pounds and also has the distinction of being the most expensive home for sale in the world.

Spelling, 64, says she wants to sell the 1991-built house because it is “too big” for her.

The Holmby Hills estate, known as The Manor, stretches across 56,500 sq ft, with a 17,000 sq ft attic not accounted for in the sale plans.

The Spelling estate is said to have 100 rooms.

“As we get older, you know, it”s a lot to walk,” the Daily Express quoted Spelling, as telling American TV network MSNBC. (ANI)

Old media still a dominant source for information, news for Aussies: Survey

Melbourne, Mar 16(ANI): A new survey has found that Australians trust the supposed “old” media such as newspapers, television, and radio more than the Internet.

According to Essential Research survey, despite the recent protestations of web media proprietors, traditional media is still the dominant source for information on news and current affairs.

It is also more highly trusted than its Internet counterparts.

The survey, which took 1000 people into consideration, revealed that commercial TV news and current affairs is the most frequently consumed news media, with 87 percent of people saying they watched at least once a week. Newspapers came second, with 72 percent reading at least weekly.

In contrast, just 28 percent people said they accessed blogs at least once a week, and 62 percent of people said they accessed news websites at least weekly.

Essential Research’s Director Peter Lewis said the figures revealed how the consumers seek a distinction between news and opinion.

“It gives some encouragement to professional journalists that there is in the public”s mind a difference between news and opinion, and as long as that separation remains in the public”s eyes, there”s always going to be a place for quality journalists,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Lewis, as saying. Ludhiana hosts seminar on Sufism

Ludhiana, Sep 19(ANI): Ludhiana recently played host to a national seminar on Sufism. This time, the theme was the influence of Sufism on modern times.

The Sahitaya Academy of New Delhi and the Punjab Sahitaya Academy organized the seminar.

The seminar also focused on the ‘pain of separation from God’ and intellectuals, poets and Sufi singers.

“Sufism says that God, whom a man looks for all over, is within him. And once he realizes this fact, he will be free of his ego and will find happiness,” said Vaasthe Mohi, a Sindhi poet from Ahmedabad.

While, Gulshan Majith, a poet from Jammu and Kashmir, said: “When God is everything, so what is the importance of religion and caste discrimination, this is the message of Sufism. Shaivaism, Buddhism and Sufism give same message to the world and consider this world as the manifestation of that supreme power and do not make a distinction with the other. There are no boundaries. Everybody in this world is equal for God.”

The participants also put forth the argument that many Punjabi poets make use of themes from popular Punjabi culture. r. Chandraprakash Deval, a poet from Rajasthan, said Sufism is the paramount method to fight terrorism.

“Sufism is the best way to fight terrorism. If the minds of people can be changed, they will start respecting other religions, humanity and the feeling of brotherhood and secularism will increase, terrorism will be finished then. So to fight terrorism it is important to popularize the way shown by Sufism, adopt and follow that way and spread the feeling of brotherhood,” Deval said.

Sufi singer Balbir Kaur, who also teaches singing at Guru Nanak College in Ludhiana, held the audience spellbound and she also highlighted that school students must be made aware of the great cultural heritage, traditional folk art and literature of the Sufi saints, to promote Punjabi language.

Associating Sufism with any one religion is against its very basic tenets. Underlining this basic fact, renowned Sufi singers Idrim Khan and Skakur Khan from Rajasthan sung the verses of Bulle Shah, Guru Nanak, Kabir and Sajjan Shah. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

Breathalyser screening may help spot lung cancer early

London, August 31 (ANI): Israeli scientists have come up with a device that can help spot lung cancer molecules on the breath of patients.

Dr. Hossam Haick and colleagues at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa think that the technology may lead to pocket-friendly, portable breath-test devices with the potential to save large numbers of lives by detecting cancer early.

“Our results show great promise for fast, easy and cost-effective diagnosis and screening of lung cancer,” the Independent quoted them as having written in a research paper, published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

“The developed devices are expected to be relatively inexpensive, portable, and amenable to use in widespread screening, making them potentially valuable in saving millions of lives every year,” they added.

For their study, the researchers took breath samples from 40 diagnosed patients and 56 healthy individuals.

They observed that the device, when tested, made an easy distinction between simulated “healthy” and “cancerous” breath made from artificial compound mixtures. (ANI)

Indian prodigy boy completes PhD in physics at the age of 21

Bangalore, Aug 28 (ANI): After creating waves by completing Bachelors’ degree at the age of 10 and Masters at 12, Tathagat Avatar Tulsi, well known as child prodigy has achieved another milestone by becoming a PhD in Physics.

He has completed his doctorate in Physics at the age of 21 from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, spending six years like anyone else.

Tulsi has the special distinction of being one of the world’s youngest scientists.

He credited his family members especially his father for helping him achieve the feat.

“Of course, there is some gift part there. I cannot ignore that because not all six-year-old boys are that sharp in Maths and have that kind of memory, which I had. So I think that there was a gift and I feel very lucky that I got proper environment in terms of my family members particularly my father. He did his best to encourage my talent,” said Tulsi.

The young Indian scientist has an invite from the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo, Canada, for post- doctoral work.

But he wants to continue his research in software development for quantum computing, the super fast future of number crunching in India given a chance and proper funding.

He said that he hopes to set up his own quantum computing company someday and is working hard for it.

Tulsi got a place for himself in the Guinness Book of World Records for holding MSc in physics from Patna University, at the age of 12 years and 2 months in 1999.

A native of Bihar, he was born into a lower middle-class family on September 9, 1987. His over ambitious parents wanted him to finish studies at the very young age to break all the world records.

Apart from spending his time amid an array of computers, Tulsi likes to play badminton, snookers, billiards and loves to listen to music. (ANI)

Brain scans can tell ‘honest’ person from ‘dishonest’ one even when both tell the truth

Washington, July 14 (ANI): Researching into the cognitive process involved with honesty, Harvard University psychologists have come to the conclusion that truthfulness depends more on absence of temptation than active resistance to temptation.

Assistant Professor Joshua Greene and graduate student Joe Paxton, the duo that led the study, have revealed that they used neuroimaging to look at the brain activity of people given the chance to gain money dishonestly by lying, and found that honest people showed no additional neural activity when telling the truth.

The researchers say that that observation implied that extra cognitive processes were not necessary to choose honesty.

However, the researchers also found that individuals who behaved dishonestly, even when telling the truth, showed additional activity in brain regions that involve control and attention.

“Being honest is not so much a matter of exercising willpower as it is being disposed to behave honestly in a more effortless kind of way. This may not be true for all situations, but it seems to be true for at least this situation,” says Greene.

The researchers say that they carried out the study to test two theories about the nature of honesty – the “Will” theory, in which honesty results from the active resistance of temptation, and the “Grace” theory in which honesty is a product of lack of temptation.

Writing about their findings in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they have suggested that the “Grace” theory is true, because the honest participants did not show any additional neural activity when telling the truth.

To prompt participants to lie, the researchers created a cover story about the focus of their study. The research was presented as a study of paranormal ability to predict the future.

The researchers asked those participating in the study to predict the outcomes of a series of coin tosses.

The subjects were told that the research team believed predicting the future was more likely when given a monetary incentive, and when the prediction was not shared in advance of the outcome. That gave the participants the opportunity to lie and say that they had correctly predicted the coin toss to win the money.

The subjects’ honesty was assessed based on whether their number of correct responses was statistically feasible.

According to the researchers, the participants who reported improbably high levels of accuracy were classified as dishonest, and those reporting statistically feasible levels of accuracy were classified as honest.

With the aid of fMRI technique, Greene found that the honest individuals displayed little to no additional brain activity when reporting their prediction of the coin toss. However, the dishonest participants’ brains were most active in control-related brain regions when they chose not to lie.

Greene notes that there was an important distinction between the brain activity when the honest participants told the truth, and when the dishonest participants told the truth.

“When the honest people leave money on the table, you don’t see anything special or extra going on in their brains at all. Whereas, when the dishonest people leave money on the table, that’s when you saw the most robust control network activation,” says the researcher.

The researchers hope that their findings may pave the way for a technique to detect lies by looking at someone’s brain activity, but they also concede that a lot more work must be done before this becomes possible. (ANI)

Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa lag behind in providing toilet facilities in rural households

New Delhi, July 3 (ANI): Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa figure among the list of states lagging behind when it comes to providing the toilet facilities in rural households.

“The percentage of rural households without toilet facilities in Bihar stands at 72.58 percent while in Jharkhand 69.08 percent households lack the basic sanitation. In Orissa 64.79 percent rural households are without the toilet facilities,” said Union Minister Of Rural Development C.P.Joshi in reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.

In sharp contrast Sikkim is the only state in the country, which has achieved a unique distinction of having achieved Universal Sanitation with no backlogs while Kerala and Tripura are on the way to achieve the similar feat.

The findings appear in the backdrop of a nationwide Total Sanitation Campaign . The campaign was launched by the Central Government in 1977 to provide toilet facility in each and every household in the rural areas of the country.

Based on the proposals received, Total Sanitation Campaign projects (to be implemented over a period of 4-5 years) have been approved for 593 rural districts in the country since the inception of TSC.

The major components of the TSC include information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities, incentive of Rs. 1500 from Government of India and Rs. 700 from State Government per toilet for BPL households to construct toilets, provision of toilets in schools and Anganwadis, provision of community toilets, rural sanitary marts, etc. and assistance for village solid and liquid waste management.

Since it is a demand – driven program, funds are released as per eligibility criteria based on utilization of funds by the districts. (ANI)

Sultan of Perak applauds Malay-Sikh community’s spirit

Kuala Lumpur, June 29 (ANI): The Sultan of the Malaysian state of Perak, Azlan Shah, has saluted the Malay-Sikh community for its contributions to the country’s economic, cultural and political fields.

“They form an invaluable and integral part of our colourful social fabric and deserve due recognition for their contribution, as much as any other citizen, to Malaysia’s economic, cultural and political life,” The Star quoted Sultan Azlan Shah, as saying.

Speaking at the launch of a book titled ‘Sikh Community in Malaysia’, Sultan Azlan Shah applauded the way the Sikhs have managed to retain their distinct cultural identity, despite being a minority.

He said their strong religious beliefs, cultural practices and strong sense of community had undeniably afforded them resilience and distinction.

Sikhs made their entry into Malaysia in the 19th century and quickly became known for their gallantry in the security forces, he noted.

“Today, the community’s role and influence extends to other fields, with prominence in professions such as medicine and law,” Sultan Azlan said.

Later, Information, Communications and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim told reporters that the ministry would work to highlight the cultural heritage of other minority communities.

“We may start a series of shows on RTM highlighting the cultural and musical background of the Sikh community next week,” he added. (ANI)

Faster, more energy efficient electronics comes closer to reality

Washington, June 21 (ANI): You may see smaller, faster, more powerful, and less energy consuming electronic devices emerge in future, thanks to a new discovery by researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Describing their work in the journal Science, the researchers have revealed that it involves a method to measure intrinsic conducting properties of ferroelectric materials, which for decades have held tremendous promise but have eluded experimental proof.

They believe that with this work, they may be on a path that will see barriers tumble.

“For years, the challenge has been to develop a nanoscale material that can act as a switch to store binary information. We are excited by our discovery and the prospect of finally being able to exploit the long-conjectured bi-stable electrical conductivity of ferroelectric materials,” said ORNL Wigner Fellow Peter Maksymovych.

“Harnessing this functionality will ultimately enable smart and ultra-dense memory technology,” added the expert who has jointly authored this study report with Stephen Jesse, Art Baddorf and Sergei Kalinin at the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences.

The researchers claim that this is the first time that any group of researchers have demonstrated a giant intrinsic electroresistance in conventional ferroelectric films, where flipping of the spontaneous polarization increased conductance by up to 50,000 percent.

Ferroelectric materials can retain their electrostatic polarization and are used for piezoactuators, memory devices and RFID (radio-frequency identification) cards.

“It is as if we open a tiny door in the polar surface for electrons to enter. The size of this door is less than one-millionth of an inch, and it is very likely taking only one-billionth of a second to open,” Maksymovych said.

As authors write, the key distinction of ferroelectric memory switches is that they can be tuned through thermodynamic properties of ferroelectrics.

“Among other benefits, we can use the tunability to minimize the power needed for recording and reading information and read-write voltages, a key requirement for any viable memory technology,” Kalinin said.

Maksymovych pointed out that numerous previous works have demonstrated defect-mediated memory, but defects cannot easily be predicted, controlled, analyzed or reduced in size.

Ferroelectric switching, however, surpasses all of these limitations and will offer unprecedented functionality.

The authors believe that using phase transitions such as ferroelectric switching to implement memory and computing is the real fundamental distinction of future information technologies. (ANI)

Vatican temporarily in denial over Pope’s Hitler Youth past

Rome, May 13 (ANI): The Vatican has involved itself in a fresh public relations fiasco for seeking to rewrite the biography of Pope Benedict XVI by denying that he was ever a member of the Hitler Youth.

Even though the 82-year-old German pontiff has admitted in numerous interviews that he was drafted unwillingly into the Nazi youth movement towards the end of the war, his spokesman came up with another version.

“The Pope was never in the Hitler Youth, never, never, never,” The Telegraph quoted Father Federico Lombardi, chief spokesman for the Pope, as saying at a press conference in Jerusalem.

Father Lombardi tried to draw a distinction between pro-Nazi Germans who volunteered for the Hitler Youth and young men, like the pontiff, who were forced to join the anti-aircraft unit but who, he claimed, were not necessarily in the Hitler Youth.

But his comments contradicted statements the Pope himself has made.

In the 1996 book “Salt of the Earth”, the Pope told Peter Seewald, a German journalist: “At first we weren’t, but when the compulsory Hitler Youth was introduced in 1941, my brother was obliged to join. I was still too young, but later, as a seminarian, I was registered in the HY. As soon as I was out of the seminary, I never went back.”

Late yesterday Father Lombardi withdrew his earlier comments, saying that Benedict had, indeed, been forced to join the Hitler Youth.

Father Lombardi made his comments in the wake of a critical response in Israel to the Pope’s choice of language over the Holocaust during the first day of his trip to Israel.

In clarifying his suggestion that the Pope had not been a member of the Hitler Youth, Father Lombardi said he had intended to dispute suggestions in the Israeli media that the Pope had been an enthusiastic Nazi as a boy. (ANI)

Terror groups in Pakistan, a threat to regional and world peace

Amritsar, April 30 (ANI): Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma on Thursday said the presence of organized terror groups in Pakistan poses a major threat to the safety and security of the entire region, a threat to peace in the subcontinent and to world peace.

Sharma was in Amritsar to canvass for Congress candidate O.P. Soni who is contesting from the Amritsar parliamentary constituency.

Addressing a press conference here, Sharma said the surge of the Taliban is a dangerous development, which needs to be effectively countered by Pakistan government and its army because it is needed in the interest of Pakistan’s own stability.

“We are very clear that Pakistan, which is our neighbor, has unfortunately become the epicenter of global terrorism. Its terror infrastructure has to be dismantled. Taliban and similar organizations, which are intolerant and threaten the civilized order, have to be neutralized. We wish Pakistan strength in doing so we also wish them democracy and stability,” Sharma said.

Reacting to reports of attacks on Sikhs in Peshawar, Sharma described it as unfortunate and barbaric and added that the India Government would take up the issue at the diplomatic level with the Pakistan Government to ensure the safety of minorities.

Sharma, however, assured that in India all possible measures for the protection of India and its citizens have been taken.

“We had worked out 100 days plan to reinforce our intelligence agencies after the Mumbai terror attack. The security infrastructure has been revamp and full consultation has been insured of different wings of intelligence agencies. Many recourses and equipments have been made available and the laws have been strengthening. The amendment to the legislator is assured that we have stringent anti terror laws on the statuary board,” said Sharma.

Talking about ongoing crisis in Sri Lanka Sharma said that there was a clear distinction between Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and Tamil civilians in the island nation and Colombo should take every measure to ensure that Tamil minorities get equal and constitutional rights.

Sharma said that Indian Navy and the cost guards were on high alert to pre-empt any attempt by remnants of LTTE cadre to infiltrate into India.

Sharma, however, added: “I do not see any threat coming from them, such organization which has done enough damage in the past.” By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)

Pak Govt. plans to combat ‘Bad Taliban’

Islamabad, Apr. 20 (ANI): The Pakistan Government has decided to track down and combat the ‘Bad Taliban,’ which is held responsible for targeting law-enforcement agencies in the NWFP and FATA.

According to The Nation, the recent increase in of suicide bombings targeting the NWFP police has forced the government to start a hunt operation against the anti-state ‘Bad Taliban’.

Recently, two consecutive suicide-bombing attacks at Charsadda and Hangu District have killed three dozen police personnel.
The identical pattern of the bombings and preliminary investigation revealed that the attacks were carried out by ‘Bad Taliban’ with help of local criminals.

According to the sources, the Zardari Government is also planning to seek the help of what is described as ‘Good Taliban’ in tracking down and combating the elements involved in destabilizing the country.

Some government sources supported the new plans, by saying that new strategy could greatly help to identify the elements targeting the law enforcement agencies in NWFP and FATA.

“Good Taliban are people following just Islamic agenda and were not involved in the anti-state activities “, a source said.

However others were not inclined to buy the idea because, they said that the Taliban were targeting the law enforcement agencies as reaction to the CIA operated drone strikes against Al-Qaeda and Taliban hideouts in FATA.

“All the Taliban are the same and there should be no distinction between good and bad Taliban and it was need of the hour that government tackles them with an iron hand”, said another source. (ANI)

8 reasons you should immediately dump your beau

Washington, April 7 (ANI): A dating guru duo has charted eight reasons for women to drop their boyfriends immediately.

L. Rx and P. L. Ayer, though are “gurus for men”, have decided to start helping the “fairer” sex by giving advice to women about men through their popular website DatingToRelating.com.

Women can learn on the website what all men do to trick them, and how to bust a player who is lying and cheating on them, reports AssociatedNews.US.

L. Rx also guides women as to what they should watch out for or avoid in their selection of men, reports AssociatedNews.US.

The first reason he suggests is that a woman should leave a man immediately if he ever hits or slaps her, or even threatens her in a rough way.

Another suggestion is that a man who tries to move into a woman’s apartment, as he doesn’t have a job or a place to stay, should be dumped because men are supposed to be the providers.

He says that a woman should never support a man because it may seem cool for a while, but in the long run she will regret it.

The third reason for dumping a boyfriend is that he plays with his girlfriend like they are one of his buddies, as a man who can’t make the distinction between men and women is a real idiot.

L. Rx further says that men having no male friends, or those whose male friends are a bunch of jerks, should be dropped immediately because there is a reason why good men don’t like him.

The fifth ground for immediately dumping a boyfriend is that he is jealous or possessive for no reason, as such men tend to project their own moral code on their girlfriends.

L. Rx feels that a guy wanting a committed relationship after one date should be nuts.

Boys who straight away approaches a woman and tells her how hot she is should also be rejected, he says.

Finally, the eighth reason for dumping a beau is that he is married or in a relationship. Such guys should be dropped the minute a woman finds out.

L. Rx’s eight “No Brainers” for women from his website are:

1) If a man ever hits you or slaps you or even threatens you in a rough way.

2) If a man tries to move into YOUR apartment because he doesn’t have a job or a place to stay.

3) If a man plays with you like you are one of his buddies.

4) If a man doesn’t have any men friends or his men friends are a bunch of jerks.

5) If a guy is jealous or possessive for no reason.

6) If a guy wants a committed relationship after one date.

7) If a guy walks up to you on the street and tells you how hot you are.

8) If he is married or in a relationship. (ANI)

Naik To Be The Next IAF Chief

In a significant move, the Government of India on Friday announced Air Marshal Pradeep Vasant Naik, the vice-chief of the Air Staff, as the next IAF chief.

“Air Marshal Naik will take over after the present chief retires from service on May 31,” said a government official.

Naik would be succeeding Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major, who retires on May 31.

As per the rules and regulations, the Government makes the appointment for the top job two months before it falls free.
