26/11 attackers had left notes saying “this is pointer to war”

Mumbai, Sep.9 (ANI): Police inspector Prakash Bhoite on Wednesday told a special trial court here that the terrorists involved in the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai, had planted two powerful bombs with timers in metal boxes at different places near the Taj Hotel with notes scribbled in Urdu saying “this is pointer to war”.

Bhoite told Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam that one of the boxes in which these bombs and notes were found was located near the hotel where renovation work of Gateway of India was in progress. The second box was located near the Gokul Hotel behind Taj Hotel.

Both boxes contained eight kg of RDX with timers.

Nikam said that the version of the witness fortified the case of the prosecution that the aim of terrorists was not only to create terror in Mumbai but also to wage a war against India.

Bhoite said he was on duty at the Colaba Police station on the day of terror attacks when he heard the shots being fired outside.

He said he rushed outside and learnt that two persons had entered Taj Hotel after firing at customers inside and outside Cafe Leopold.

Bhoite further said he was asked to look for explosives, and during the search, he found two boxes near the Taj Hotel laden with explosives.

The bomb detection and disposal squad was immediately summoned which defused the bombs, he told the trial court. (ANI)

Fielder-Civil’s pregnant ex evicted for making home a ‘drug den’

London, June 23 (ANI): Amy Winehouse’s husband Blake Fielder-Civil may have more problems at hand after his pregnant ex-flame was evicted from her home for allegedly using the property as a drug den.

Amy was allegedly crushed after her estranged jailbird partner was reported to be the father of former heroin addict Gilleen Morris’ child.

Gilleen alleged a brief romance with Blake while the two were being treated at a rehab in England earlier this year.

She has now been forced to leave her house in North Yorkshire following complaints from neighbours, who blame her for allegedly creating a drug nuisance on the property.

“We will use all powers at our disposal to remove any persons convicted of dealing in drugs from one of our properties,” The Daily Star quoted Steve Towers, of the Broadacres Housing Association, as saying.

Meanwhile, Blake has apparently demanded a DNA test to prove his paternity. (ANI)

Bhopal civic authorities take police help for water distribution

Bhopal, May 20 (ANI): To ensure a hassle-free water distribution in Bhopal, the civic authorities here are taking help of police personnel nowadays.

Earlier, the residents used to quarrel while fetching water, be it at the public tap or from the water tanker. Often these brawls for a bucket of water had turned bloody. With police presence, such incidents have become a thing of the past.

Around 225 police personnel are at the disposal of the water supply wing of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation. They are expected to escort the water tankers doing the rounds in various colonies to supply water.

“There are around 225 police personnel deployed all over the city, who escort the water tankers to ensure that no fight takes place and people do not waste water. We ensure that the locals form a queue and fetch water,” said Raja Ram Vishwakarma, a police official in Bhopal.

According to Hasib Ansari, in-charge Water Supply Wing of Bhopal Municipal Corporation, dispute over water distribution among civilians had become a tricky affair as such the officials sought assistance of the police.

He also mentioned that the presence of the police had worked wonders, infusing civic sense among the people.

“To solve the water crisis in Bhopal, we, as the civic authorities have taken the help of police force to distribute water peacefully and also to ensure that people do not face any kind of inconvenience,” noted Hasib Ansari, in-charge Water Supply Wing, Bhopal Municipal Corporation.

Residents, meanwhile, have appreciated the novel method of municiapal corporation officials, as they feel safe due to police besides there is no wastage of water.

“Earlier, we had trouble getting water. People used to fight like cats and dogs to fill water. But now ever since they (police) have come, things have improved a lot,” recalled Sahibabi, a resident of Bhopal.

Cases of water-related violence have been reported from a couple of places in Madhya Pradesh due to acute water scarcity. (ANI)

50-lakh-rupees scheme to clean Narmada

Bhopal, May 11 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh’s Urban Administration Department has sanctioned a 50-lakh-rupees scheme to make the Narmada river pollution free.

The plan, prepared by Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, requires laying down of sewage line at Narmada’s origin in Amarkantak.

A 1.5 km long sewage line is proposed to be laid in the town, and waste water generated in the city would be treated in a plant.

This will help in preventing it (waste disposal) from mixing in Narmada at its origin, the official sources said.

The plan was presented to the state’s Urban Administration Minister Babulal Gaur during his recent visit to the holy town.

Gaur has also directed officials to clean septic tanks of hotels, houses and hostels with the help of suction machines, the sources said. (ANI)

US military using iPod, iPhones in Iraq operation

London, May 11 (ANI): Apple’s iPods and iPhones are the latest equipment that the US army is using to carry out operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The easy-to-use devices have been embraced by the military because they can safely carry secure software and are far cheaper than manufacturing a version specifically for the army.

Capable of holding more than 30,000 programs, Apple’s best-sellers are being used for everything from translating to working out the trajectories of snipers.

According to The Telegraph, the US military is also working on how these devices can be used as guidance systems for bomb disposal robots and to receive aerial footage from unmanned drone aircraft.

Currently, the US Marine Corps is funding an application that would allow soldiers to upload photographs of detained suspects, along with written reports, into a biometric database.

The software would match faces, in theory making it easier to track suspects after they’re released.

Though the British military admires the usage of the Apple instruments, the Ministry of Defence remains wary of security implications and has “no plans” at present to go down the American path.

The Director of the US Army’s Intelligence, electronic warfare and sensors operation, Lieutenant Colonel Jim Ross, believes the iPod “may be all that the personnel need”.

“What gives it added advantage is that a lot of them have their own personal ones so they are familiar with them,” he told the paper.

Cost can be considered to be another advantage.

The iPod touch (which soldiers can use over a secure WiFi network) retails for around 230 dollars and the iPhone for 600 dollars. Bulk orders placed by the Pentagon bring further savings. (ANI)

Decision to shift 2011 World Cup matches was made unanimously: ICC

Dubai May 6 (ANI): The International Cricket Council (ICC) has put aside all allegations that the decision to shift the 2011 World Cup matches from Pakistan was taken in a hurry, saying the issue was discussed appropriately before the final decision was taken.

The ICC’s chief executive officer Haroon Lorgat said it is not right to say that the decision was taken without discussing the issue properly.

“It is unfair to say that it was not properly discussed. The decision was made unanimously at the organization’s board meeting last month,” he said.

Lorgat said the ICC would continue to help Pakistan from being alienated in the international cricket world.

Talking to media persons on the side lines of a programme, Lorgat said a special task committee would be set-up to help Pakistan come out of the situation where no foreign team wants to tour the country due to security concerns.

“It is important that international cricket should return to Pakistan. This country has produced great cricketers and still there is enormous talent,” the Daily Times quoted Lorgat, as saying

Commenting on the statement of former ICC president, Ehsan Mani that shifting of World Cup matches from Pakistan was not on the agenda for the ICC’s meeting, Lorgat said : “It’s unfortunate that Mani has chosen to make a public statement without full knowledge at his disposal. This is not correct that it was not on board meeting’s agenda.”(ANI)

Miliband to fly like a millionaire at UK taxpayers’ expense

London, May 3 (ANI): British Foreign Secretary David Miliband is to waste hundreds of thousands of pounds on a private jet to whisk him around the world.

As recession-hit Britain struggles under the weight of a historic debt, Miliband plans to travel in five-star luxury rather than take scheduled flights.

The tabloid reveals that Miliband has ordered his minions to find him a luxury Gulfstream or Learjet plane to be on standby to whisk him away on official trips abroad at a moment’s notice.ach trip could cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of pounds when Miliband could simply take a scheduled flight instead.

Just flying him to the US and back could cost the exchequer 250,000 pounds, reports The Sun.is boss, Prime Minister Gordon Brown scrapped the Queen’s Royal Flight in March to save money, but Miliband is going for his own royal-style jet despite the country’s nosedive into recession and debt.

Last night the Foreign Office confirmed that a contract for the 24/7 hire of a private jet went out for tender in early February and will last for two years.

It also includes a demand for a back-up gravy plane to be kept ready.

A spokesman refused to disclose how much Miliband’s mini version of the American president’s Air Force One would cost the country. All he said was that Miliband deserves the right to have a private aircraft at his disposal.

Last year, Miliband was accused of using the Queen’s Flight as his own “private taxi service” after boarding it 16 times in 12 months before his government scrapped it.

Cabinet Office rules strictly banned ministers from using the 32 (The Royal) Squadron if any other commercial service was available.

Miliband’s plane-which the Foreign Office claims will also be available for use by other Cabinet ministers-is likely to be a plush Gulfstream or Learjet. Private flights cost more than 8,000-pounds-an-hour with an average bill for a return trip to Washington costing nearly 80,000 ounds.(ANI)

Europe seeks to put stop to loss of biodiversity by 2010

Athens – The European Commission will seek to put a stop to the loss of biodiversity in Europe by 2010, EC President Jose Manuel Barroso said at the start of a biodiversity conference in Athens Monday.

The two days of talks in Athens attended by 230 environmental chiefs, trade associations, non-governmental organizations and lobby groups, have found a new momentum following a G8-Plus charter to protect biodiversity adopted on April 24 by environmental ministers from Group of Eight members Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States.

The 25-point G8 Syracuse Charter explicitly links safeguarding biodiversity to the fight against global warming.

The G8 charter also urges raised awareness that “ecosystems provide a steady flow of goods and services – by providing clean drinking water, pollinating crops and decomposing waste.

Climate change, land use change, habitat destruction, pollution and waste disposal all pose a growing threat to biodiversity at a time when most of Europe’s species and habitats are at the risk of extinction.

There is growing evidence that the decline of ecosystems and species is continuing despite the progress made with the establishment of the Natura 2000 network, the largest network of protected areas in the world.

“The protection of biodiversity lacks sanctions, legislative muscle and political will,” said Tony Long, the Brussels director of conservation group WWF.

According to EC President Barroso, the European Union’s objective of stopping biodiversity loss will be met by “implementing existing legislation such as the Birds and Habitats Directives, completing the network of protected areas in Europe and agreeing on new policies to address deforestation and to reduce the EU’s ecological footprint.” (dpa)

US Army tests flying robot sniper

Washington, April 23 (ANI): The US Army is testing the Autonomous Rotorcraft Sniper System (ARSS) – a remote-controlled unmanned vigilante robot helicopter equipped with a high-velocity sniper rifle.

According to a report by Fox News, its RND Edge semi-automatic gun is mounted on a self-stabilizing turret with built-in zoom camera, and fires 7 to 10 precisely aimed .338-caliber rounds per second.

Back on the ground, a human directs it using a modified Xbox 360 controller, which plugs into a laptop so that the operator can see what the drone sees.

The system is intended for the urban battlefield – an eye in the sky that can stare down concrete canyons, and blink out targets with extreme precision.

Attempting to return fire against the ARSS is liable to be a near-suicidal act, as ARSS is described as being able to fire seven to 10 aimed shots per minute, and it’s unlikely to miss.

Because the Vigilante is smaller, lighter and cheaper than a manned combat helicopter, it can be supplied in greater numbers, and without the need for those elite, highly-trained snipers.

Sniping from a chopper currently takes tons of skill and training, but ARSS is literally point-and-shoot for the operator on the ground, using a videogame-type controller.

The software makes all the necessary corrections, and the system should ensure first-round kills at several hundred yards.

The secret is in the control system and stabilized turret, which is currently fitted with a powerful RND Manufacturing Edge 2000 rifle specifically designed for sniping work, using the heavyweight .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge.

“Having the ability to accurately engage single point man sized targets with an airborne UAV will give the ground based soldier the ability to have a high-point survivable sniper at their disposal when needed,” stated the Army solicitation notice when the project was announced in 2005. (ANI)

Security of govt buildings in Delhi to be upgraded

New Delhi, Apr 19 (PTI) As part of its efforts to tighten security in government installations, the Centre has decided to upgrade security of several buildings, which house key ministries. New sentry posts at entry and exit points will be erected, while existing posts will be reinforced and additional Quick Reaction Teams will be deployed in the vicinity of these high value premises under the new security plan, a senior government official said.

Currently, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) guards all the government buildings ranging from the South and North Blocks which house the PMO, key ministries like Defence, Home, Finance to other buildings like Nirman Bhavan and Shastri Bhavan. The force guards as many as 52 such installations in the national capital under the Government Building Security (GBS) wing for access control, security check and emergency control with the help of QRTs stationed nearby in case of emergencies.

The Central Public Works Department provides the security men with the infrastructure. Under the new plan, equipment for fire safety and disaster mitigation will also be placed at the disposal of the security personnel, the official said.

The16 ‘mysterious’ but ‘entitled’ persons using billion rupee bullet-proof Merc’s in Pak !

Islamabad, Apr.21 (ANI): The Shaukat Aziz Government in Pakistan had purchased 28 bullet-proof Mercedez Benz cars to be used by officials who were entitled for using a bullet-proof vehicle, while the government has the list of 18 persons who are currently using the vehicles, strangely enough it has no details of the remaining 16 persons who have these luxurious vehicles at their disposal.

According to The News, despite several queries the Cabinet Division which maintains the central pools of these cars, has not released the names of the officials who are using the vehicles.

A report has revealed that these 16 vehicles are being used by Cabinet Division’s own officers for official and general duty.

However, Cabinet Division Secretary Zafar Mahmood has denied that any of his officers were using the cars.

“No officer of the ministry is allowed to use Mercedes Benz at any cost, what to talk of bullet-proof cars .The official document you have, may have contained some serious printing mistakes,” Mahmood told the newspaper.

“I will check the list and then tell you that who is using these cars,” he added.

As of now the list of 18 persons, about which the Lower House has information, using the bullet-proof cars include names of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira, Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar and others.

Interestingly, the documents procured by the newspaper mentions that the officials who are using the Merc are ‘entitled’ to do so, but according to the law of the country even the federal secretary or a minister is not entitled to drive an official bullet-proof Mercedes unless approved by the Prime Minister.

It may be noted that Prime Minister himself was sentenced to seven years jail term by a NAB court for misusing one of such vehicle when he was Speaker of the National Assembly from 1993 to 1996. (ANI)

Philippine health chief blasted for torching tainted peanut butter

Manila – Environment groups on Monday lambasted the Philippines’ health secretary for supervising the burning of thousands of bottles of salmonella-tainted peanut butter. The Ecological Waste Coalition criticized Health Secretary Francisco Duque for supervising the incineration of the contaminated products last week in Taguig City in metropolitan Manila.

The group said the disposal was a violation of the Clean Air Act, which prohibits the burning of materials that emit toxic and poisonous fumes.

“By openly circumventing the law in this case, the Department of Health has become party to the unnecessary and untenable propagation of a formidable public hazard,” the group said.

Von Hernandez, Greenpeace South-East Asia director, said the incineration was outrageous “when you consider that it was the health secretary involved in violating a measure intended to safeguard public health.”

The peanut butter bottles were recalled from local supermarkets after tests by the Health Department showed these were contaminated with salmonella. (dpa)

Greenpeace releases Guide to Greener Electronics; Wipro is top Green Brand of India

The international non-governmental organization well known for its works of protection and conservation of the environment – Greenpeace has released its “Guide to Greener Electronics,” foucusing on e-waste. According to the “Guide to Greener Electronics” of the Amsterdam, Netherlands based Greenpeace, Nokia and Samsung have been ranked at top positions, while Wipro Infotech has been named as top Green Brand of India.

Wipro Infotech has been ranked among the top five green brands in the world. Scoring 5.5 out of 10 to achieve the top rank among Indian IT brands, Wipro also climed up in the global ranking. In a statement yesterday, Wipro stated that it has been able to achieve its present ranking largely due to its comitted efforts towards “energy efficiency and structured programme for effective e-waste management for customers”.

According to Wipro, it has been – rolling out energy star compliant products, launching ewaste management programmes, creating awareness among public, and using recycled plastics in its new productions. Wipro stated that it has been creating awareness among its customers on recycling collected e-waste rather than mere disposal. The company claimed that it has restricted the usage of pernicious substances in its products.

Greenpeace’s “Guide to Greener Electronics” has named Sony as ‘greenest’ console brands. Accordong to the Guide, Sony consoles are more friendly to environment than that of Microsoft and Nintendo – Sony products are 40 percent environmentally-friendly than Microsoft’s, while 50 percent greener that Nintendo’s products. Sony has scored 5.5 out of 10, Microsoft has scored just 2.7, while Nintendo has scored worst 0.8 in the rankings.

In its Guide to Greener Electronics, Greenpeace has stated that Nintendo has done good job by banning the use of phthalates, and monitoring its use of antimony and beryllium. Certainly, the company is “endeavouring to eliminate the use of PVC, but it has not set a timeline for its phase out”. In its report, Greenpeace wrote, “The company has banned phthalates and is monitoring use of antimony and beryllium and although it is endeavoring to eliminate the use of PVC, it has not set a timeline for its phase out. Nintendo discloses carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from its own operations and commits to cutting CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases by 2% over each previous year. However, Nintendo admits that an increase in business led to a 6% rise in CO2 emissions in 2006.”

Greenpeace has praised Apple for reducing the use of PVCs and BFRs in its products, but Philips, according to Greenpeace, has been very impressive in the war against e-waste.

According to Greenpeace, the Guide to Greener Electronics “star” has gone to Philips and the 47,000 people who sent emails to the company. In the report, Greenpeace wrote, “The Dutch electronics giant (Philips) reacted to our e-waste campaign with a dramatic about-turn on recycling and take-back. They’ve jumped from 15th to 4th place in one go. Following public pressure, the company has significantly improved its position on taking financial responsibility for the recycling of its products when they become e-waste.

However, the companies, such as HP, Lenovo and Dell have been penalined in the Guide to Greener Electronics. According to Greenpeace, these companies have failed to keep up ther promises to eliminate vinyl plastic (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) from their products by the end of the year. Greenpeace commended some of these companies’ products that are free from hazardous chemicals, yet these companies have been ranked worst for their negligence.

Cape Town match will determine outcome of Proteas-Oz series: Arthur

Cape Town (South Africa), Apr.8 (ANI): Proteas coach Mickey Arthur believes outcome of the third one-day match with Australia could determine the outcome of the five-match series.

The match will take place in Cape Town on Thursday.

“It’s hugely important to us and we are really looking forward to it. The two teams are evenly matched and it’s all there for one team to reach out and grab. It’s all there for one team to really take the initiative on Thursday make a claim for the series,” the South African Press Association (SAPA) quoted Arthur, as saying.

“The side that wins on Thursday will take a lot from it. Bearing in mind the situation now, at one-all, it’s probably the most important ODI. The two sides are so close, that if you just open the door, the other side will walk through,” he added.

Arthur said South Africa had done some serious soul-searching after their 141 drubbing in Durban last Friday, and he expected the Australians had done the same after South Africa dismissed them for 131 at Supersport Park on Sunday.

“It’s going to be up to us. We put into practice (on Sunday) a lot of what we spoke about on Friday night. We reinforced what we’d spoken about before the first ODI and I think our execution on Sunday was fantastic. I’m pretty sure Australia are doing the same thing right now,” he said

Arthur said he did not expect changes to the team that demolished Australia on Sunday.

“We have an unbelievable balance in the team that we’ve put out now. I think people have seen the balance that Jacques Kallis brings to our side – we were unbalanced in Durban. Jacques is two players, really. We couldn’t afford that extra batter in Durban because we didn’t have enough fire power in the bowling,” he added.

Arthur added, “With this current combination, we bat to 10 -I certainly include (Wayne) Parnell in that – and we have seven bowling options at our disposal, which is a very nice position to be in. We’ve found a combination that will work.”

“We also have the ability to change that combination according to conditions,” he added. “We’re in a very good position, and it’s not a position that happened by chance – it took a lot of thinking and a lot of planning. The squad is as good a squad as we’ve ever had.” (ANI)

Mohanty cracks the whip

HYDERABAD: Placed on the hot seat barely few days before polling by the Election Commission, DGP A K Mohanty has begun cracking the whip. He has
recommended the transfer of East Godavari SP Y Nagi Reddy to the Election Commission for not fulfilling the poll-related responsibilities. Sources said the axe is likely to fall on at least two other SPs and some DSPs.

Given the little time he has at his disposal, Mohanty has conveyed to his personnel that three basic things should be monitored and implemented to ensure a fair and fear-free elections: checking illegal flow of money, unlicensed sale of liquor and executing non-bailable warrants against anti-social elements to ensure that they do not roam around, striking fear among voters. To this end, Mohanty reportedly has stressed on visible policing, which is simply stopping vehicles and individuals randomly and checking them thoroughly.

Nagi Reddy has been serving in East Godavari since April 2008. Sources said some senior field officers are under watch for non-performance and errant behaviour on a case by case basis. “The new DGP is conveying one simple message to the district police bosses. Check the flow of cash and liquor, and round up the lumpen elements. Do not deviate from the instructions. If you do not do so, you are out,” said the SP of a Telangana district.

But Mohanty appears to have his hands full as money and liquor seem to flow freely. Till Saturday, at least Rs 13 crore in cash ostensibly meant for distribution among the electorate has been seized from several persons including aides, gunmen and workers of candidates and political leaders. “The amount seized is a pittance as compared to what the candidates are spending, which is anywhere between Rs 4-6 crore per assembly constituency,” said one candidate.

With regard to liquor, the biggest task for the DGP is to ensure the closure of belt shops. Excise officials said despite the Election Commission directive that belt shops should be closed, many continue to exist and in fact, new ones appeared to have sprung up. This is evidenced by the fact that liquor sales in districts did not decrease in March, something that should have happened if the belt shops, which account for 40 per cent of the revenue, had been shut down.

With regard to rounding up criminals, Mohanty appears to have begun in right earnest as many of the NBWs are being executed.

In all, there are said to be about 800 NBWs pending execution. “But Mohanty’s biggest challenge is checking the flow of money and liquor. And as of now, there is a free flow of these two,” said one leader.
