Arsenal boss threw water bottle in rage after his team’s loss

London, Apr 19 (ANI): Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger sent a water bottle flying after his team threw away a 2-0 lead in the final 10 minutes to crash 3-2 at Wigan, blowing up their Premier League dream.

“I don’t know who will win the title now and I don’t care. If we had won the game today of course we’d have been back in it,” Wenger said.

“To win championships you have to focus on the pitch and you have to do it for 90 minutes. Today we were not capable of maintaining it,” The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.

Arsenal would have gone within three points of leaders Chelsea had they won, but Charles N’Zogbia capped a sensational fight back to virtually assure Wigan of Premier League survival.

Arsenal were never at their best but appeared to be going into the final 10 minutes. Yet Wenger felt they lost their discipline.

He said: “I believe we were not focused and not disciplined and we were caught. We were a bit unlucky as well but you have to keep focused for 90 minutes, otherwise you get punished, particularly when you are up against a team with nothing to lose.”

“After it went 2-0 we lacked cohesion and discipline. I always feared we could be punished.

“Personally I never felt the game was over. I saw we were having difficulties keeping the ball and creating other chances. They refused to give up and we were punished,” he said.

“It is the most disappointing defeat of the season, particularly with the way we conceded. It is difficult to understand and accept,” Wenger added. (ANI)

No compromise on discipline, fitness, performance: Pak selector

Lahore, Apr 19(ANI): Pakistan’s cricket chief selector, Mohsin Khan, has said no compromise would be entertained on discipline, fitness and performance for the Twenty World Cup to be held in the West Indies from April 30.

Khan emphasised it was a major factor why the selection committee decided to replace injured fast bowler Umar Gul and all-rounder Yasir Arafat with fast bowler Moahammad Sami and uncapped paceman Mohammad Irfan.

“In mutual agreement with captain and coach, we have decided that we will not take a chance with half-fit players,” The Daily Times quoted Khan, as saying.

“Umar Gul would be missed in the Twenty20 World Cup and this is disappointing that he is not the part of the team,” he added.

Gul, the leading wicket taker in T20 internationals, is sidelined by a shoulder injury, while Arafat has failed to overcome a calf problem.

Sami and Irfan’s inclusion in Pakistan’s 15-man squad is subject to approval of tournament organisers. (ANI)

Rana appeals against ban

Pakistan all-rounder Rana Naved-ul-Hasan has appealed against a one-year ban and heavy fine for indiscipline, saying he wants justice from the cricket authorities.

“It is a matter of reviving my career, so I have filed an appeal against the ban and fine with a hope that I get justice,” Naved told reporters. “I want to play for Pakistan again.”

Naved, 32, and former captain Shoaib Malik, were banned for one year and fined two million rupees ($48,650) on charges of breach of discipline during the team’s December-February tour of Australia.

The penalties were imposed after a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) committee examined the team’s dismal performances and off-field problems in Australia, where Pakistan lost all three Tests, five one-day and a Twenty20 international.

Former captains Younus Khan and Mohammad Yousuf were banned indefinitely over infighting during the preceding tour of the United Arab Emirates in November.

Brothers Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal, who were fined three million and two million rupees respectively and put on probation for six months, filed appeals on Tuesday.

Pakistan’s Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi was fined three million rupees and put on a six-month probation for ball-tampering in a one-day match in Australia which “brought the game and country into disrepute”.

Naved said the PCB did not give specific reasons for the punishment.

“The charge sheet that I have received only mentions that I under-performed in the Twenty20 match in Australia. My plea is that no player can ever perform well in all matches. I did my best but we lost,” he added.

Pakistani cricketer caught cheating

International Pakistani cricketer Nasir Jamshed has been released on bail a day after being caught cheating during a school examination, a court official said.

Jamshed, 20, became the latest Pakistani cricketer to earn a bad name off field when he was caught cheating in a ninth grade English exam in the eastern city of Lahore on Monday.

“The civil court has released Jamshed on bail of rupees 20,000 ($485) and on a surety that he will not repeat the offence,” the official said.

Jamshed is considered one of Pakistan’s most promising cricketers after he excelled at a junior level before making his one-day debut against Zimbabwe in 2008. He then lost form and was axed from the team last year.

In all, Jamshed played 12 one-day internationals for Pakistan, the last of which was against Sri Lanka in 2009.

Last month, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) banned and fined seven top cricketers over lack of discipline during tours of Australia, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates between November-February.

Discipline, fitness, performance, merit, prime criteria for selection: Mohsin Khan

Karachi, Mar.27 (ANI): Pakistan cricket chief selector Mohsin Khan has said that discipline, fitness and performance are the prime criterias based on which he selects players, and assured that as long as he is heading the Pakistan Cricket Board’s selection panel there would be no discrimination in the selection procedure.

“I will select players only on merit. No deserving cricketer will be discriminated as long as I am heading the selection committee. I was also discriminated in my cricketing days so I know how it feels to be discriminated,” The Dawn quoted Khan, as saying.

Khan said he would never compromise on discipline and fitness while selecting a player.

“My criteria of selecting players are discipline, fitness and performance and I will not compromise on any of it,” he said.

Khan said playing for the country and not for personal gains should be the priority for all players.

“The glory of the country should always be the top priority of the players. They should tell themselves that they are playing for the country which is glorious itself and that money is only a bonus with it,” he said. (ANI)

Coaching Pakistan team ‘not bed of roses’: Waqar Younis

Lahore, Mar.27 (ANI): Admitting that coaching the national squad ‘is not a bed of roses’, newly appointed Pakistan cricket coach, Waqar Younis, has said that he has left his ego back in Australia and is now ready to accept the challenge.

“Coaching is all about management. A coach needs to forget his ego – for being a great player of yesteryear. He should come to the level of his players and think the way they think. I have left my ego back in Australia because I believe that no coach is bigger than the game,” Waqar said in an interview with Deutsche Welle Urdu Service.

Waqar, who had settled in Sydney after retiring from professional cricket, said he would give his best and would try not to disappoint the fans, who have had few occasions to celebrate over their national squad’s success in the recent past.

“The history of Pakistan cricket tells us that the coaching of the national team is no an easy task. But someone had had to come forward and I accepted the challenge. I assure the nation and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that I will not disappoint them,” he said.

Waqar, who arguably was one of best swing bowler of his times, said his priority would be to install discipline and confidence in the team, and urged people to refrain from criticising the team and the team management after every defeat.

“I understand that the people of Pakistan are mad for cricket and their sentiments are badly injured when the national team loses but I request them that they should curb their emotions and try to understand the circumstances before reacting,” he said.

Though Waqar’s first assignment is to help Pakistan defend its title in the upcoming ICC T20 World Championship in West Indies, but the newly appointed coach said his prime target is the 2011 World Cup.

“Yes, World Cup 2011 is the real target. I have seen immense talent in Pakistan A and U-19 teams which needs to be groomed and I am sure that in next few months things would start moving in the right direction,” he said.

Waqar said Pakistan has got players who are capable of lifting the T20 World Cup once again, and added that fitness plays a vital role in any major tournament.

“Pakistan are capable of defending their title in the presence of Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq and Akmal brothers,” he said. (ANI)

Punishing players was necessary to maintain discipline: Butt

Lahore, Mar. 15 (ANI): Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt has said that punishing some players was necessary to end the culture of indiscipline in the national team.

“For long now, the trend we saw in the team was that some players were only playing for themselves as individuals and not keeping team interest paramount,” the Daily Times quoted Butt, as saying.

“You could see this from the body language of players on the tour of Australia what was going on in the team. There was indiscipline. So we took what we felt was the best possible action against the players,” he added.

Acting on the recommendations of an inquiry committee set up after Pakistan’s dismal performance in Australia, the PCB dropped senior batsmen Muhammad Yousuf and Younus Khan for indefinite periods.

The board banned Shoaib Malik and Rana Navedul Hasan for one year besides fining them Rs 2 million each. It also fined Shahid Afridi and Kamran Akmal Rs 3 million each, besides imposing a fine of Rs 2 million on Umar Akmal.

“We have sent out a clear message to the players that we will no longer tolerate any act that goes against the team or board policies,” Butt said. (ANI)

Country’s largest Ramadan congregation held in Kerala

Malappuram (Kerala), Sep 17(ANI): Around six people from across the country attended the country’s largest Ramadan prayers congregation at Swalatha Nagar in Kerala’s Malappuram district on Thursday morning.

The Lailat Al Qadr (the Night of Power), which is held at the Ma’din campus on the 27th night of the holy month of Ramadan, is thought to be largest congregation outside Mecca and Medina.

This annual conclave has attracted attention from believers across the country and from abroad as well and the discipline with which people arrange themselves for prayers is another amazing aspect of the event.

The prayers, which started on Wednesday evening, lasted till 3 am on Thursday and many Muslim dignitaries gave special speech to the gathered congregation.

“Most of our sayings believe that on the 27th Lord Almighty gives blessings. So, we congregate here to take the blessings on this date. When you have one prayer it has only one value. When you pray in a congregation, then it is accumulated, it is accumulative and it is proponent and in large you get pure bonding. The whole night we pray and this is why we congregate here,” said Hajee K.M Mustafa Kamal, Programme convenor of Swalatha prayer conference.

“This started in a very small way and this itself shows that Allah has given so much of success to this. When every other movement has failed over the years but every year this congregation grows and today this year this has become the largest Muslim congregation after Mecca and Medina,” Mustafa Kamal added.

Apart from the main venue, people were accommodated in 10 other grounds, which were spread across 10 km on either sides of the NH-213. Of these, 5 were specially designed and prepared for women. (ANI)

Spanking found to have negative effects on low-income toddlers

Washington, September 16 (ANI): Spanking negatively affects the behaviour of toddlers in low-income families, according to a new study.

Published in the journal Child Development, the longitudinal study looked at how low-income parents discipline their young children.

It showed that spanking 1-year-olds leads to more aggressive behaviours and less sophisticated cognitive development in the next two years.

Verbal punishment, however, was not found to be associated with such effects, especially when it was accompanied by emotional support from mothers.

Besides, 1-year-olds’ fussiness predicted spanking and verbal punishment at ages 1, 2, and 3.

The study explored whether mothers’ behaviours lead to problematic behaviour in children, whether children’s challenging behaviours elicit harsher discipline, or both.

It looked at more than 2,500 exclusively low-income White, African American, and Mexican-American mothers and their young children, interviewing and observing them at home when the children were 1, 2, and 3 years old.

All participants’ family incomes were at or below the federal poverty level.

Using their own interpretations of spanking, mothers reported how often anyone in the home had spanked their children in the past week.

The study also looked at how often mothers verbally punished-scolded, yelled, or made negative comments-their children.

It showed that African American children were spanked and verbally punished significantly more than the other children in the study.

The authors speculated that that might be due to cultural factors, such as belief in the importance of children’s respect for elders and in the value of physical discipline to instil that respect.

Moreover, some African American mothers said that in preparing their children for a harsh, physically dangerous, and racially discriminating world, there was little room for error in their childrearing.

The study also shed light on information about the effects of such types of discipline.

“Our findings clearly indicate that spanking affects children’s development,” said Lisa J. Berlin, research scientist at the Center for Child and Family Policy at Duke University and the study’s lead author.

Specifically, children who were spanked more often at 1 behaved more aggressively when they were 2, and had lower scores on tests measuring thinking skills when they were 3.

Similar findings were made even after taking into consideration such family characteristics as mothers’ race and ethnicity, age, and education; family income and structure; and the children’s gender.

The study also found that children who were more aggressive at age 2, and had lower cognitive development scores at ages 1 and 2, were not spanked more at ages 2 and 3.

“So the mothers’ behaviours look more influential than the children’s,” said Berlin.

Unlike spanking, however, verbal punishment alone didn’t affect either children’s aggression or their cognitive development.

Interestingly, when verbal punishment was accompanied by emotional support from moms, the children did better on the tests of cognitive ability. (ANI)

One out of two Brits think England will win 2010 World Cup: Poll

London, Sep. 13 (ANI): One out of two British nationals believe that England can win the 2010 Soccer World Cup, a Sunday Times poll has revealed.

According to the YouGov poll, 49 percent of people believe England’s chances of winning are “excellent” or “good.”

The survey also revealed 20 percent nationals think the team’s chances are “poor,” while 12 percent say they are “hopeless.”

The new found confidence reflects the team’s 5-1 victory over Croatia this week, which sealed qualification for next year’s tournament in South Africa.

Times Online quoted England’s Italian manager Fabio Capello as saying that his minimum target is to reach the World Cup final on July 11 in Johannesburg.

And his dream final would be between England and Italy.

England’s success is being attributed to the discipline Capello has imposed on players, which includes limiting the attendance of WAGs. (ANI)

BJP concept note calls for setting its house in order in three months

New Delhi, Aug.28 (ANI): A concept note circulated during the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) Chintan Baithak held in Simla last week has called on members of the party to work unitedly to set their house in order within three months.

Here is what the note says, according to a private television channel.

The first section is called “Proposal”. It analyses what has been ailing the party and the major problem pointed out was the party’s keenness in being on election mode, at the cost of developing the organization.

The second section refers specifically at Elections 2009 and points out that leaders of the party were keen on advancing their own goals at the cost of the party. It goes on to say that to maintain good relations with the media, key party issues were freely discussed with them, and that BJP had become ‘infected’ with ‘corporate culture’.

The third section is called “forward planning” and has suggestions of how to rejuvinate the party. It says more youngsters need to be attracted to the party and most interestingly points out that the party is not coordinated with the RSS anymore.

Section four lists other factors. For the party’s degeneration, without mincing words, the note says that there is a need for greater discipline at the Central level and infighting among leaders must end.

The final section is called “Resolution” and suggests that everyone in the party must work together, and form a three-month agenda to turn the party around. (ANI)

BJP’s ongoing crisis a cause of serious concern, says Khanduri

Dehradun, Aug 25 (ANI): B C Khanduri, senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here on Tuesday said that the ongoing crisis in the party is a cause of serious concern.

“Keeping in view the BJP’s past record, its discipline, love for the country and people’s faith in the party, whatever is happening right now is a cause of concern. I pray to god that the party regains it past glory and people’s faith be restored like in the past,” Khanduri said.

When asked if the retirement of Atal Bihari Vajpayee from active politics due to ill health may have influenced the functioning of the party, he agreed that it might have affected in some way.

“I have been fortunate enough to have worked with Vajpayee and had his blessings. But as far as the question is concerned that due to his ill heath the BJP has suffered a setback, it’s obvious that if a senior leader stays away from active politics due to ill health or some other reasons, it’s bound to make a difference in the functioning of the party,” he added.

The ongoing turmoil in the BJP has deepened further with senior leader Arun Shourie attacking party president Rajnath and senior leader L K Advani in full media glare.

The party had earlier expelled Jaswant Singh for praising Jinnah in his book “Jinnah – India, Partition, Independence”. (ANI)

Kulkarni equates Advani with Jaswant on Jinnah remarks

Mumbai, Aug. 23 (ANI): Sudheendra Kulkarni, who has quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over ideological differences with its present leadership, has equated one time mentor L.K. Advani with expelled party leader Jaswant Singh in so far as remarks on Jinnah are concerned.

In an interview with the Times Now television channel, Kulkarni described the expulsion of Jaswant Singh as unfortunate, and as a graceless and baseless action.

“There is nothing in the book (Jinnah: India, Partition Independence) to suggest that Jaswant Singh has denigrated Jinnah and Sardar Patel, or he has gone against the ideology of the BJP. In fact, I don’t see any essential difference between what Advani has written about Jinnah in his book and what Jaswant Singh has written about Jinnah in his book. The only difference is that the entire book by Jaswant Singh is a political biography of Jinnah, but there is no essential difference between the basic arguments. Therefore I consider it very unfortunate that such a graceless action should have been taken against Jaswant Singh,” Kulkarni told the channel.

He said that he has decided to end his active association with the BJP because of ideological differences.

He told the channel: “I want to remain honest and sincere to my own conviction and ideas. I also want to have freedom to express them. At the same time I entirely recognise that the party has its own discipline and it is not proper for an individual to remain inside the party and express his views. The right was for me to come out of the party, which is what I have done. I continue to remain a well-wisher of the BJP,” he said.

He, however, refused to elaborate on his differences with the party.

“I came to the conclusion that I cannot make meaningful contribution to the party anymore. Therefore I decided to step out,” he said.

“Going forward, I continue to remain active in public life and in my own small humble way, try to promote the ideals of good governance and building national consensus on national issues. This, I would like to work closely with like minded people in all political parties,” he added.

He also said that his decision had nothing to do with Jaswant Singh’s expulsion from the BJP.

“I had taken my decision several weeks back and communicated it to Mr. Advani. I am proud of having spent 13 very satisfying productive years working closely with two of the tallest leaders of India — Vajpayee and Advani. I hold them in the highest respect. My decision will not diminish my respect for them. I am greatful to them as well as all other senior leaders of the party for giving me an opportunity to work for this great party. But, when you have differences, the right thing is to step out which is what I have done,” he said. (ANI)

Rajnath stays mum on Jaswant, says Advani will continue to lead BJP

Shimla, Aug 21 (ANI ) : Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) President Rajnath Singh, on Friday refused to take any questions from the media on the issue of expulsion of former External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh from the party and said L.K Advani will continue to lead the party “forever.”

” Advaniji will lead the party for longer time.”

Addressing the media at the end of the three-day Chintan Baithak here, Singh said “Don’t bring up the old issues again, and I told whatever I can on day one.”

Singh said the members attending the Chintan Baithak had decided to be tough on the ideological and individual discipline of party leaders and workers.

He urged party leaders and workers to adopt a model life style in their public as well as personal life.

Singh also said the BJP has decided to stick to its core ideology of cultural nationalism as said in the ideological draft of “Integral Humanism.”

Integral Humanism is a draft of five speeches made by Jan Sangh President Din Dayal Upadhyaya. The BJP adopted Integral Humanism as its philosophy in place of Gandhian Socialism at Party’s National Executive of 1984 held at Kolkata.

The analysis of party’s performance on all the fronts made at the Chintan Baithak would be discussed at a general secretaries meeting soon.

He also said that the party would constitute a committee to draft the “road ahead” map for the party, which would be placed before party’s National Executive in September – October.

” I will call a meeting of senior leaders and all general secretaries to discuss the analysation made here, and a committee will be formed to prepare a road map draft for the party, which will be placed before the national executive,” Singh said.

Singh also rebuffed allegations of any leakage of the draft of the party’s performance.

“Both Bal Apte and Ram Lal were assigned to analyse the party performance based on the reports given by various state units, and accordingly they put their views before the meeting. And they brought all the points in their diary and no draft was prepared, “Singh explained.

Considering RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s suggestion to give preference to youngsters, Singh said : ” The meeting considered the sarsnghchalkji’s statement and decided to give preference for youngsters from Mandal level to the Central level.”

Rajnath read out the points of the resolutions adopted by the meet, which states, (1) The BJP will be committed to the ideology of cultural nationalism and Integral Humanism, (2)Stress on expansion of party’s geological and social base, (3) Preference to women, youths, farmers in party leadership (4) Strengthening NDA, (5) No compromise on discipline (6) Role model administration by the party’s governments at the state level, (7)Constructive and aggressive opposition at the centre and (8) Leading model life by leaders and workers of the party.

Singh said no one is responsible for party’s debacle, ” No one is responsible for election debacle. If at all any one is responsible, its Rajnath Singh, I owe my responsibility being party chief.” (ANI)
