Army, IGNOU sign MoU to give soldiers’ second career option

New Delhi, Sep. 4 (ANI): A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Indian Army and Indira Gandhi National Open University to meet the twin objectives of empowering soldiers educationally and providing an opportunity for a second career option.

The MoU was signed by Lieutenant General Mukesh Sabharwal Adjutant General and IGNOU Vice Chancellor Professor VN Rajasekharan Pillai in the presence of Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor at South Block today.

The MoU seeks to confer educational certification to soldiers of the Indian Army, within the parameters laid down by IGNOU for Community Colleges, recognizing the ‘in-service’ training done by them; within the broad frame work set out by IGNOU.

IGNOU will register Regimental Training Centres/Human Resource Development Centres of the Indian Army and Army Schools of Instructions as ‘Community Colleges’.

The Army-IGNOU Community Colleges will function as autonomous bodies conducting examinations and their courses as before.

Credits from such approved courses will be transferred to the programme and will count towards the desired credits to be earned for an associate degree.

Certain credits are to be earned for a Graduation Degree which would be from approved elective courses offered by IGNOU or the Army to be undertaken after grant of an Associate Degree.

Approval of these courses with credit ratings would be accorded and reviewed by the ‘Army-IGNOU Academic Committee’ at regular intervals.

With the signing of the MOU with IGNOU leading towards award of academic diploma/associate degree and Graduation Degree to soldiers, a major step forward has been taken to empower the soldier to live a life of dignity and confidence after he leaves the service for a second career.

The project has been named as ‘Gyan Deep’ signifying knowledge. (ANI)

Army to tie up with IGNOU for giving soldiers a better life after retirement

New Delhi, Sep 3 (ANI): To empower soldiers educationally and to provide them with an opportunity of a second career option after retirement, the Indian Army has come out with a plan according to which soldiers who join service after school can study for a degree in market driven courses.

The Indian Army will tie up with the Indira Gandhi National Open University to set up community colleges on the pattern of the US system of community colleges in its cantonments and other defence establishments to impart education in market-driven courses and soft skill programmes.

The Army will sign an MoU with IGNOU on September 4 to give academic diploma or associate degree and graduation degree to soldiers, which is seen as a step towards empowering the soldier to live a life with dignity and confidence after retirement.

The project named ‘Gyan Deep’ will benefit many of the 1.2 million soldiers of the Army. Nearly 50,000 trained soldiers retire every year from the army after an average of 15 years of service.

“The jawans will be given BA, BBA, BSc and BCom degrees depending on their area of work,” a senior officer said.

For soldiers who join after Class 10, the army will be organising bridge courses to bring them at par with those who have completed Class 12.

The Army-IGNOU Community colleges will function as autonomous bodies conducting examinations and their courses are hitherto fore. By Praful Kumar Singh (ANI)

Mizo artist sets up first ever fine art school

Aizwal, Aug 28 (ANI): Laltanpuia, a promising painter who started the first fine arts school in Mizoram, is encouraging the youth to take to innovative ways to earn a living.

Laltanpuia, for whom painting was just a hobby, has now turned it into a mission to fight social problems like militancy, drugs and poverty in the northeast. is art not only pleases the eyes but also conveys an important message about culture, life and most of all peace.

With the objective of tapping the hidden talent among the youth, Laltanpuia started the first fine arts school in Mizoram after the completion of a Diploma in Fine Arts from Mumbai.

“As there is no art college here so I had to pursue my Diploma in Art outside of the state. After completion of my course, I returned and set up this school of fine arts so that people need not go out to learn about art. Art can attract the youth towards constructive activities. I think the educated youth can be self-employed by taking to painting and there is a good demand for paintings in metro cities and foreign markets,” said Laltanpuia.

Laltanpuia, who believes that art can play a role in developing aesthetic values among the people of Mizoram, encountered many hardships on his journey.

One of them was the absence of an art school or guidance centre in the state.

Keeping this in mind, he started the art centre, which is now molding lives of many budding artists.

“It’s a good profession. We can make good money and since it is my hobby, I can pursue my hobby as a profession,” said Lalchangchua.

Today, several educated Mizo youth have joined the centre and are learning fine art. Some even plan to further develop their skills after getting trained in painting and usage of colour.

“Art is a good scope for earning money through your works. You can also make a name for yourself through art. And government jobs are all very common here, so it’s a different way,” said Lisa Lalsanswani, a trainee.

Laltanpuia’s determination and hard work has set an example worth emulating. By Pinaki Das (ANI)

A group of Afghan students visits India to learn Hindi

Agra, July 4 (ANI): A group of 34 students from the Nanghar University in Afghanistan recently visited Agra to study Hindi.

The students included six girls and 28 boys.

The students are being taught the language by the Central Hindi Organisation (CHO).

Chandrakant Tripathi, organization’s secretary said: “Afghani students visiting India, especially women, is surprise because women in Afghanistan are known to stay confined under their veils.”

The students will attend special classes for six weeks.

Some of the students said they were eager to learn the language.

“For me there is a sole motive behind learning Hindi because Aryans wrote Vedas (the ancient scriptures or revelation of the Hindu teachings) and I want to discover how truthful they are,” said Sufiya, a student.

At present, CHO is planning to offer degrees like proficiency certification, Graduation Diploma and Post Graduation Diploma in Hindi to the foreign students. (ANI)

Rural girls in Ludhiana drawn to professional education

Ludhiana, June 19 (ANI): Several girls belonging to rural parts of Ludhiana are eager to gain self-reliance and lead a professional’s life.

A college here has given them a hope that they can realise such a dream and for this it has opened many new courses which can be joined just after matriculation.

Home science, a holistic field of study, aims at improving the quality of life of families. In Ludhiana, it is empowering girls and enabling them to be professionals and self-employed entrepreneurs.

Established in 1966, the College of Home Science at the Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana has been empowering girls. With 305 students enrolled, it offers a number of study programmes with different levels and streams of education.

Girls from rural areas are eligible to join it after secondary education for one-year Diploma Course in Fashion designing, Interior Decoration, Management of Creche and Nursery Schools.

After completing their matriculation, they can take certificate courses in’Souvenirs and Handicarfts’ and Child Care.

“I believe that it is very necessary for women to be independent. Nowadays there are no government jobs. If we can learn and use fashion technology, we can stand on our feet. After getting a fashion designing certificate you can start your own unit and can earn handsomely,” said Baljinder Kaur, a student.

Keeping in view that many rural areas do not have adequate infrastructure and facilities to offer quality programmes of study at their level, the College has recently changed its admission criteria for B.SC (Hons.) Home Science six-year-programme.

Candidates can now enrol themselves after matriculation and this presents better opportunities for rural candidates.

The College has modified its curriculum and added new courses like convenience and health foods and apparel industry management.

It has certainly helped the rural girls by increasing their competence to work in the private sector.

“Being a girl also it has lots of benefit because tomorrow we are going to be the homemakers. So it is going to be really beneficial otherwise also since girls are striding forward in their career this is a very good option it is related to there household work also and gives them a good option to work,” said Jas Keerth, a student.

“Along with agriculture, development of rural families is very important and its main mandate is to improve the quality of the life of women. Be it in the form of giving residents instructions through teaching of various courses or taking up community directed research programmes, then extending the knowledge of teaching as well as research to farm families,” said Dr. Neelam Grewal, Dean of the College of Home Science, Panjab Agricultural University.

Ludhiana-based Anita is one of the many successful women who have graduated from the College of Home Science. After completion of one year Diploma Course in Fashion Designing in 2002, Anita launched her own fashion brand ‘Venenzians’. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

Bristol Palin graduates from high school

New York, May 16 (ANI): Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s daughter, Bristol, has graduated from high school.

According to People magazine, Palin, 19, who made the spotlight after her pregnancy was revealed, looked as happy as her fellow classmates as she accepted her high school diploma at the Wasilla Sports Complex.

While even her mum was not sure whether she would finish school after having Tripp, Palin revealed to the magazine that she was determined to graduate.

“I knew it would be hard work, but I knew I was going to do it,” the New York Daily News quoted her as telling the magazine.

It appears that her graduation has brought happiness even to her near ones, as her mom Sarah is also ecstatic about it.

“It’s been a challenging and exciting year – her senior year – and I’m just so pleased that we are where we are today,” Sarah said. (ANI)

Art of Calligraphy on revival in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, May 14 (ANI): The art of calligraphy is on a revival mode in Jammu and Kashmir, after the State’s Academy of Art, Culture and Languages started running courses to facilitate the revival of rare calligraphic work.

The academy is providing all facilities to the students, including notebooks, pens, charts, and black ink during the three years course for calligraphy diploma.

“The art suffered during the period of insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir. But now thankfully it is reviving. The academy has shown a lot of interest in it. In the past two to three years it is working for the progression of the art,” said Syeda Nayeema, in-charge Calligraphy Cultural Academy.

Young boys and girls in the state are taking up these courses with a lot of interest.

“It was a very famous art earlier. But now the modern parents want their children to study and not indulge in anything else. I was studying too, but I thought that I should learn this art, as it is a part of our tradition,” said Sabeena, a student.

The students too think that the efforts of the academy are commendable.

“Calligraphy was on its way to become extinct as everything is now done on computers. It has stopped for some time due to turmoil but now the academy is making efforts to revive it. People too are showing interest in it now,” said Saba Akhtar, another student.

Calligraphy in Kashmir flourished under the sultans and the Mughals. The sultans used to employ calligraphers to copy important works.

Initially, the calligraphists were brought from central Asia as they had knowledge of paper from China whereas the Indian calligraphists worked on birch bark. (ANI)
