Amy Winehouse’s surprise charity gig

London, September 18 (ANI): Amy Winehouse recently did a surprise gig at a charity fundraiser for terminally ill children.

The guests present for dinner at Rays Of Sunshine in Wrotham Park, close to her Barnet home, received a pleasant surprise when she appeared out of nowhere for a five-song set.

Meanwhile, reports have come that the troubled singer has been spending hours talking to her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil on the net.

“They are non-stop emailing at the moment,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

The couple had divorced earlier this year. (ANI)

Women have sex to ‘relieve boredom, pity and to cure a migraine’

London, Sep 7 (ANI): Women indulge in sex not for love and passion, but for various other “unromantic” reasons- including relieving themselves of boredom, out of pity for a man and even to cure a migraine headache-says a new book.

‘Why Women Have Sex’ by Cindy Meston and David Buss has highlighted 200 reasons as to why women have sexual intercourse.

While attraction ranks way down in the list, it seems that women go to bed with their partners as a way of relieving boredom, keeping the peace, curing a headache and even as a thank you for a nice dinner.

“Research has shown that most men find most women at least somewhat sexually attractive, whereas most women do not find most men sexually attractive at all,” the Telegraph quoted the authors, who are both psychology professors at the University of Texas, as saying.

The researchers interviewed 1,006 women as research for the book, and found some very surprising answers.

One revealed that she did it for a spiritual experience, as she thought it to be “the closest thing to God”.

Others listed “cure for stress headache”, “to make my sexual skills better” and “for a clearer complexion”.

However, the majority (84 per cent), admitted that they had sex to ensure a quiet life or to bargain for their partners to carry out household chores.

“I have sex to relieve the boredom.Because it’s easier than fighting. Plus it gives me something to do,” said one of the interviewee.

While another admitted: “I had sex with a couple of guys because I felt sorry for them.”

One of the surveys carried out by the authors revealed that one in ten women admitted having sexual intercourse in return for presents, or lavish meals.

Responses included “he bought me a nice dinner” or “he spent a lot of money on me early on”, “he gave me gifts early on” and “he showed me he had an extravagant lifestyle”. (ANI)

Now, a smart home that can alert owner about a stove burner left on

London, Sep 3 (ANI): Ever thought that your home would tell if you have left a stove burner on after making your breakfast? Well, it is now possible, thanks to the new sensor-stuffed apartment created by researchers at Washington State University in Pullman.

The smart home, known as Casas, developed by Diane Cook and colleagues, can learn the ways of its inhabitants by observing their daily habits and how they use different appliances everyday.

The technology could be used in houses to support people with cognitive difficulties or dementia with their daily living needs, or to make things easier for healthy people.

For example, the apartment can recognise when a person is performing actions associated with making breakfast and can prompt them with audio and video signals to warm them of any anomaly like a stove left burning.

While Casas was developed to analyse the sensors’ output, Graduate student Parisa Rashidi has improved the system, so that it can learn a person’s habits without prior assumptions about what events or patterns to expect.

While previous smart homes used movie cameras to pre-define key activities before recognising them, the new system was successfully tested in a specially outfitted apartment with a single resident on campus.

It required around a month of training to accurately tease out the resident’s habits from the sea of sensor data, said Rashidi.

Once trained, Casas can identify patterns as complex as “at 6 am the kitchen light comes on, the coffee maker turns on, and the toaster turns on” without any prior knowledge of what to expect.

To maintain a resident’s sense of privacy Casas works without cameras, RFID chips or microphones.

Instead less “invasive” sensors that detect motion, temperature, light, humidity, water, door contact and the use of key items, such as opening a bottle of medication or switching on the toaster.

“We don’t want to give residents the feeling that Big Brother is watching them,” New Scientist quoted Rashidi as saying.

The researchers developed a number of data-mining algorithms to help make sense of the sensor output.

One algorithm uses a grid of motion sensors to map out how a person walks around the home, looking for daily “trajectories”, or routes through the house.

A second algorithm finds patterns in a sequence of events, such as learning to expect the resident to turn on a tap after turning on the oven.

And a third algorithm looks to correlate events it detects with the time of day to identify the pattern, for example, of when the person eats dinner.

Now the researchers are working on upgrades that allow the apartment to decipher the actions of multiple inhabitants and recognise subtle variations in commonly repeated tasks.

The study has been published in the journal IEEE Transactions on Systems Man and Cybernetics. (ANI)

British wartime agents foiled Nazi plot before D-Day

London, Sep.1 (ANI): British agents foiled a desperate German plot to monitor troop movements just days before D-Day, according to newly-released MI5 files on the Nazis.

During the Second World War, Iceland became tactically important for both sides and Germany sent a series of spies to gather weather information about the area to send back to the Luftwaffe.

But by May 1944 they had become convinced that any naval assault on their forces would be launched from Iceland, MI5 files released on Tuesday by the National Archives in Kew show.

According to The Telegraph, the Germans put together a hurried plan to send three spies to the country to monitor troop movements in a bid to foil Allied attempts to liberate France.

Three Allied forces agents, named Miller, Hoan and Frick, were having dinner in their hotel in Seydisfjordur, Iceland, on the evening of May 5, 1944, when they got wind of the scheme.

A seal hunter had spotted three strangers behaving suspiciously near Borgarfjordur.

The agents tried to alert an Allied ship anchored off the coast in that area but were told it could take hours before it got up enough steam to sail, by which time the men could be deep into the Icelandic wilderness.

So they persuaded the seal hunter to be their guide, borrowed a boat and in the early hours of the morning landed near where the men had been seen.

They hiked across the snow, through the night, following the faint trail left by the spies until finally, at 6 a.m. the following day, they spotted them.

Their report notes: “We cocked our pistols and quickened our pace.”

They surrounded the men, who very quickly confessed to being German soldiers, but claimed they had been sent only to gather meteorological information.

Ernst Fresenius, an avowed Nazi loyalist, was in fact the only German. The other two men, Hjalti Bjornsson and Sigurdur Juliusson, were Icelanders who had been hired as mercenaries by the Nazi military.

They were frogmarched to a farmhouse two miles away where Miller and Frick kept them prisoner while Hoan went back to find the radio transmitter the men had hidden.

A search revealed that the men had 9,000 pounds of sterling, dollars and German marks on them.

It took six interrogation sessions back in UK to establish that the arrested men were in fact trained spies looking for information on troop and naval movements and ships in fjords.

All three were handed over to the American forces and their file ends with a report from the interrogation camp. (ANI)

Karzai slammed his karakuli cap on table during explosive meeting with Holbrooke

Lahore, Aug. 31 (ANI): During the recent ‘explosive’ meeting between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and US special envoy Richard Holbrooke, Karzai is reported to have whipped off his distinctive karakuli cap and slammed it onto the dinner table.

“For an Afghan man to do that, it’s a big gesture,” a local businessman was quoted. “It’s like throwing down the gauntlet,” the Daily Times quoted an Afghan businessman, as saying.

According to reports, Holbrooke suggested holding a second round run-off following reports of massive fraud during the recent presidential elections.

Sources said, Karzai reacted very angrily at Holbrooke’s suggestion and the meeting ended shortly afterwards.

“They were discussing different scenarios and one of them was the possibility of a run-off,” the paper quoted a Karzai insider as saying. “That’s when there was a misunderstanding. There were strong words from both men.”

The Obama administration has not hidden its “disdain” for Karzai for running a corrupt government, the Sunday Times had reported.

US officials had downplayed the row and said they believed “Karzai’s agents leaked a selective version of the meeting to make it look as if he was resisting US pressure to force him to hold a second round when he was already the winner”, the report added.

However, the spokeswoman for the US embassy in Kabul has denied of any such altercation.

She denied reports about Holbrooke storming out of the meeting, and also refused to divulge details of the meeting. (ANI)

Gerard Butler’s mum makes him scrub the floor

Washington, Aug 31 (ANI): Gerard Butler might be one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, but not for her mother because she even makes him scrub the floor.

The ‘Ugly Truth’ actor has credited his mother for keeping him grounded, for she refuses to treat him like a movie star.

The actor makes regular trips to his parents’ home in Glasgow, Scotland.

He has revealed that his mother insists that he helps out around the house, and carries out his share of the chores.

“I go home and they’ll cook Christmas dinner, and she’s like, ‘C’mon, give a hand, come on, wash the dishes or put the dishes away.’ “And I’m like, ‘Mum, I am a major Hollywood movie star, I can’t be doing this. It’s embarrassing,’” Contactmusic quoted Butler as saying.

He added: “I end up on my hands and knees, wiping up the floor.” (ANI)

Kim Kardashian, Reggie Bush back together?

Washington, Aug 27 (ANI): Kim Kardashian and ex-boyfriend Reggie Bush have reunited, claim American reports.

The couple had broken up in July this year after rumours of both cheating were doing the rounds.

However, it is believed the pair came to an understanding after meeting up in New Orleans – where Bush plays for The New Orleans Saints – earlier this month.

It is reported Kardashian and Bush went out for dinner in the city, where Kardashian also gifted a pup to the footballer.

Contactmusic quoted a source as telling the National Enquirer: “Reggie initiated the reconciliation – he’s been trying to get back with Kim since the second week of the breakup. And when he asked to see her while she was in New Orleans, Kim seized the moment.”

The insider also said Kardashian was now staying with Bush in New Orleans.

“They say they love each other and want to give it another try,” the source added. (ANI)

Stuart Broad can fill my boots, says Freddie Flintoff

London, Aug.24 (ANI): Andrew Flintoff signed off from Test cricket with Ashes glory and declared that Stuart Broad would adequately make up for his absence.

The 31-year-old said: “What a Test for Stuart Broad – I think once I’ve gone, they’re not going to be missing me. They seem to have found someone far better. It’s been a real team effort and I’m just happy to be a part of it.”

Flintoff will now undergo surgery on Tuesday on his injured right knee, having suffered a gruelling run of knocks since the 2005 Ashes.

But after his run-out of Ricky Ponting sparked the Aussie collapse, the all-rounder claims it has all be worthwhile.

He added: “All the injuries and operations, It’s for moments like this. What a way to go. My contribution may only have been a run-out but there’s been a few question marks over my fielding so I think I’ve put them to bed.”

“I’m sure I’ll celebrate tonight but at the moment I don’t know what to do with myself.

“I’m going to celebrate, probably not in the same style as 2005, I’ll take the missus out for dinner and then spend the day with my family tomorrow,” The Sun quoted him, as saying. (ANI)

Freddie out for dinner with missus and family after Ashes victory

London, Aug.24 (ANI): England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who is to go under the knife on Tuesday, will take his wife Rachael, parents and kids out for dinner, to celebrate the return of the Ashes with the 197-run victory over Australia at The Oval.

“I will take the missus out for dinner and spend the day with my family. But I’ll be ‘nil by mouth’ after midnight on Monday because of the operation,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

Freddie hurled and hugged his son Corey and sister Holly, five, after the win, while Rachael brought one-year-old son Rocky down from the stands.

Freddie’s emotional dad Colin, 57, joined the wild celebrations, shedding tears of joy as he enjoyed the magical moment. The star’s proud mum Susan also came over to give him a hug.

Fred, who will have an operation to fix a knee injury tomorrow, said: “This is a special moment. I was nearly in tears when I saw my Mum up there. It’s like a dream, quite surreal at the moment. I don’t know what to do with myself.”

The Lancashire hero admitted he would not be repeating the boozy antics which saw him in a near-daze as he celebrated England’s last Ashes triumph in 2005.

The party mood spread nationwide last night among thrilled fans who’d seen England thump fierce rivals Australia to win the fifth and deciding Test by 197 runs.

The resounding victory ensured they clinched the summer series 2-1 and reclaimed the coveted Ashes urn they lost Down Under in 2006.

Captain Andrew Strauss said: “The guys have done amazingly. When we were bad we were very bad, and when we were good, we managed to be good enough.”

The squad headed straight from the pitch to the players’ lounge for a post-match party.

A security guard revealed two more crates of booze had to be sent in early in the evening after the stars nearly drank the bar dry.

The England squad left the Oval in a convoy of taxis just after 11 p.m. to continue their celebrations at their East London hotel.

Fans partied in pubs around the ground – many draped in England flags. England and Aussie supporters drank side by side. Downing Street also saluted the squad last night.

A spokesman said: “The Prime Minister will be writing to congratulate them on their exhilarating victory.”

London Mayor Boris Johnson, called England’s win an “incredible triumph”.

Even gutted Australians praised England in defeat. Tim Hussey, 28, from Melbourne, said: “It was an epic series. And I’m pleased Freddie went out with a bang.” (ANI)

Jaswant Singh says he sent an advance copy of his book to Advani

Shimla, Aug. 19 (ANI): In a startling revelation, expelled BJP leader Jaswant Singh said on Wednesday that he had sent an advance copy of his latest book ” Jinnah – India-Partition-Independence” to senior party leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha L.K. Advani, and therefore, this made his removal from the party after 30 years of association even more painful and shocking.

Interacting with journalists here on the sidelines of a three-day party Chintan Baithak, which he is not attending in the wake of his sudden expulsion, Jaswant Singh said that at the time of his sending the book over to Advani, there was no reaction or hint of things to come, and this made his expulsion from the party one of the saddest episodes of his adult life.

He said he never could have imagined in his wildest dreams that he would be expelled from the BJP just for “writing a book”. The book, he said, was a personal viewpoint, and had nothing to do with the policies or stances of the BJP.

Singh’s revelation came hours after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh announced that Singh was being expelled from the BJP.

Singh, who arrived here last evening for the Chintan Baithak of the party, kept away from the meeting by changing his hotel.

According to sources Singh kept away citing bad health. He also skipped a dinner hosted by Advani.

The BJP has distanced itself from the book and Singh’s views on Jinnah.

BJP is meeting here to discuss the causes for the party”s defeat in 2009 general elections and its strategy for the future.

The meeting is also likely to take up the issue of former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, who has refused to quit as Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly.

Over 25 senior party leaders, including members of the party’s parliamentary board and chief ministers Narendra Modi of Gujarat, Raman Singh of Chhattisgarh, Ramesh Pokhriyal of Uttarakhand and B.S. Yeddyurappa of Karnataka, will participate in the three-day meeting. (ANI)

Clinton meets Obama, discusses release of two American journalists

Washington, Aug.19 (ANI): Former U.S. President Bill Clinton went to the White House on Tuesday and briefed incumbent Barack Obama and his top aides about his recent trip to North Korea, which resulted in the release of two American women journalists-Laura Ling and Euna Lee.

According to the New York Times, the 40-minute session took place in the White House Situation Room. Before the meeting, Clinton spoke to the president by phone and briefed his national security adviser, Gen. James L. Jones.

The paper said that the meeting was rich in symbolism. The president invited Clinton to the Oval Office to talk further.

The White House said little about what the men discussed, beyond noting that Obama had wanted to thank Clinton for winning the release of Ling and Lee.

The paper also revealed that Clinton’s visit to North Korea would not have materialized had not been for the role played by veteran North Korean hand and intelligence officer, Joseph R. DeTrani.

DeTrani is the government’s senior officer responsible for collecting and analyzing intelligence on North Korea. His efforts to pave the way for Clinton’s visit offer a glimpse into how the administration was forced to use unorthodox methods to overcome the lack of formal communications between Washington and Pyongyang.

The visit was arranged under a veil of secrecy with the help of De Trani, who has spent much of his career trying to unlock the mysteries of North Korea.

His role in the whole episode allowed Clinton to land in Pyongyang on August 4 to win the release of two imprisoned American journalists.

Clinton was determined not to extend a public-relations coup to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il, who feted him over a long dinner that night, even proposing to stay up afterward.Kim was flanked by two longtime aides – a surprise to Americans who had suspected that both men had been pushed aside – and he gave no hint that North Korea was in the throes of a succession struggle, despite the widespread questions over how long he might live.

Kim expressed a desire for better relations with the United States. De Traini and John Podesta, a trusted adviser to him and Obama, assisted Clinton.

The details about Mr. Clinton’s visit came from interviews with multiple government officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Before taking the job of North Korea mission manager in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in 2006, DeTrani served in the State Department as the special envoy to the six-party talks with North Korea, holding the rank of ambassador.

In that job, he got to know key North Korean officials, including Kim Kye-gwan, the chief nuclear negotiator, who greeted Clinton. DeTrani also worked with David Straub, a former head of the State Department’s Korea desk, who was a member of Clinton’s delegation.

More than anything else, Clinton’s visit served to clear up some of the shadows surrounding Kim Jong-il’s health.

The former American president did not engage in a substantive discussion about North Korea’s nuclear program. Nor did the North Korean leader give Clinton any indication that his nation would relinquish its nuclear ambitions – a condition the United States has set for resuming negotiations, officials said. Malaysian Sikh community lauded for their contribution in national development

Ipoh (Malaysia), Aug 13 (ANI): Malaysia’s Sikh community may be small in number, but its contributions to the development of Perak and the nation as a whole have been invaluable.

Menteri Besar Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the community should continue with its contributions and remain united to face local and global challenges, as well as work with the government to improve its lot.

“The state government would like to record its appreciation to the community for enriching the heritage, culture and social fabric of our country, especially Perak,” he said at a dinner organised by Union of Perak Sikh Organisations (UPSO) on Tuesday.

“I hope Sikh organisations will work together to maintain their cohesiveness, strength and identity,” The New Strait Times quoted him, as saying.

Eight Sikh organisations and 38 Gurdwara Sahibs make up UPSO. There are about 28,000 Sikhs in Perak.

Some 1,500 members of the community attended the dinner.

“The state government intends to form a solid, long-term and fruitful relationship with the community through UPSO. We will try to address the problems raised by the community promptly,” said Zambry. (ANI)

Warne to enter Sports Australia Hall of Fame in October

London, Aug.12 (ANI): Australian spin legend Shane Warne was thrilled yesterday when he was told that he would be inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in October.

“That’s fantastic news. It will be an absolute honour and privilege to join so many great Australian sportsmen and women in the Hall of Fame. So many of my sporting heroes are already in the Hall of Fame. Cricketers like Dennis Lillee and Ian Chappell were my boyhood heroes. It will be an honour to join them,” said Warne, who is widely acknowledged as one of cricket’s all-time greats.

As one of Wisden’s five best cricketers of the 20th century, he doesn’t need any more endorsements to affirm his status in the game.

“I am really looking forward to the night. Glenn McGrath and myself were lucky enough to receive the Don Award last year and it was a superb night to be there with the who’s who of Australian sport,” Warne added.

Warne has received rave reviews for his commentary on the Ashes series, but said he had no plans for a full-time career behind the microphone.

“I have really enjoyed the experience. Sky has been great to work for. I have had a fabulous time working with David “Bumble” Lloyd. He’s a lot of fun,” Warne said.

Warne said he would again work for Channel 9 during the Australian summer, but scoffed at the suggestion he might be the next Richie Benaud.

“There’s only one Richie,” he said.

Warne will be one of eight champions to be inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame at its 25th anniversary dinner.

Two existing members will be elevated to Legend status, joining the likes of Greg Norman, Rod Laver, Dawn Fraser and Bart Cummings.

In addition to the Warne announcement, Hall of Fame chairman and yachting great John Bertrand yesterday revealed a major coup in a tough economic environment, welcoming Etihad Airways as Sport Australia’s major sponsor. (ANI)

India agrees to quota for Malay Indians keen on investing in country

Kuala Lumpur, July 11 (ANI): Accepting a request by the Malaysian Indian Business Association (MIBA), the Indian government has decided to set aside a quota for Malay Indians, who want to invest in India.

The Star Online quoted Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia Ashok Kantha, as saying that MIBA had become the bridge between India and the Malay Indian community.

Kantha was interacting with reporters after attending a dinner organised by the MIBA President P. Sivakumar.

Speaking on the occasion, Sivakumar said the quota was necessary, as Malaysian investors had failed to secure highly lucrative contracts in the construction and other important sectors in India.

Therefore, he said, Malay Indian investors should obtain Indian government’s Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) identification cards to secure contracts.

Sivakumar added that the Indian government had also agreed to increase the number of scholarship to Malaysian youngsters. (ANI)

Women spend about one year of their lives deciding what to wear

London, July 9 (ANI): A new poll’s findings suggest that women spend almost one year of their lives deciding what to wear.

The poll involving 2,491 women suggests that choosing outfits for work, nights out, dinner parties, holidays, gym, and other activities means the average woman will spend 287 days rifling through their wardrobe.

The researchers behind the study say that the biggest chunk of that time is used up picking a killer ensemble for Friday or Saturday nights out, or selecting the right clothes for a holiday. ccording to them, women, on average, spend 16 minutes every weekday morning deciding what to wear, and around 14 minutes on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

“What you wear has a direct impact on how you feel about yourself and it is important a woman feels exceptional in her outfit. Whatever the occasion your clothes portray an image and we understand this is fundamentally important to women,” the Telegraph quoted a spokesman for clothes giant Matalan, which compiled the results, as saying.

The study was based on an adult lifetime from the age of 16 to 60.

It showed that most women would spend around 20 minutes deciding what to wear before hitting the town on a weekend night.

The researchers say that week nights out can take up to 20 minutes a time too.

They further say that deciding on what clothes to take on holiday takes about 52 minutes each time.

On holiday, women generally take 10 minutes in the morning trying to find an acceptable outfit, with another 10 minutes spent picking evening clothes.

Besides, dinner parties, Christmas parties, and black tie events at around 36 minutes a time six times a year – adds up to three and a half days.

The study also found, on average, women will try on two outfits each morning before coming to a final decision, and that one in two women spend 15 minutes the night before work working out what to wear. (ANI)
