SGPC displays rare historic treasure in Golden Temple

Amritsar, June 11 (ANI): The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) displayed rare items dating back to the fifteenth to eighteenth century inside the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple to mark the Guru Gaddi Nashini of Guru Hargobind, the sixth spiritual master of the Sikhs.

Thousands of devotees thronged the Golden Temple to have a glimpse of these rare invaluable historical items.

All the valuable articles belonging to the Golden Temple were kept for display in the “Toshakhana” (treasury) on the first floor of ”Darshani Deori” (entrance gate to golden temple).

The display of rare items, called as Jlau, has its own pristine grandeur. ”JLAU” literally means a rare glitter that fazes the eyes on its first sight.

The Toshakhana is attached by four golden doors. One door has artistic work of flowers, while the remaining three depict different aspects from the lives of the Great Sikh Gurus.

The doors were presented by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

It was said each gold door was made at a cost Rs.3000.

There is one Canopy of gold weighing twenty pounds. On top of the canopy, a peacock having its neck made of pure Sapphire in a single piece is sitting. According to the estimates of a jeweller, only this piece of Sapphire costs sround four million rupees.

The stone is without any blemish. In the eyes of peacock there are diamonds. Overall, this canopy is studded with 3600 diamond stones and 101 big pearls. Just under it, there is a diamonds headband with strings of pearls. Jewelers of Lahore prepared this headband on the occasion of marriage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh”s first son Naunihal Singh.

Impressed by its art and the beauty, Maharaja presented this band as offerings to Golden Temple. Its cost came around Rs nine lakhs at that time.

Apart from this, there is one sword of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Its hilt is of pure gold studded with pearls and emeralds. The showcase lying in the Toshakhana is displaying five spades having silver handles and gold blades.

In 1973, the Punjab and Sind Bank presented the temple with one golden spade and five silver bowls. At that time Sant Kundan Singh from Jagron presented the temple with one silver spade, one sword with silver hilt and Sikh emblem of gold with silver stand.

According to SGPC, there are five necklaces, one small Canopy and one ring with a Sapphire in middle and eight diamonds around, which were presented by Princess Bamba granddaughter of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, daughter of PrinceDaleep Singh.

Besides, there are also jewels in the Toshakhana from the house of General Dhana Singh Malwai, a General in the army of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

In the early nineties, an American Sikh, who came here to pay obeisance presented a pearl necklace of three strings and three diamonds.

A box lying in the Toshakhana contains a precious gift of a flywhisk made of pure Sandalwood presented by a Turkish Muslim Haji Maskeen. It is said, 1120 lb. of sandalwood was used in the creation of this flywhisk. It took five years and seven months to create. Haji got two whisks prepared; one was presented to Golden Temple while other one was presented to Mecca, said official.

Official said that Haji presented this whisk to Golden Temple, when he saw crack in the wall of Mecca while taking round of Mecca. This crack was attributed to Guru Nanak”s visit in Mecca. The whisk was presented as offerings in the Golden Temple in 31st December 1925 when Haji visited here.

The last item is a canopy (Chanani) of cloth studded with diamonds. The Nizam of Hyderabad presented it to Maharaja Ranjit Singh to express his gratitude for the help he had received from Maharaja Ranjit Singh.Maharaja, in turn immediately presented it to the Golden temple.

In the year 1911 Sarbarh (the British Manager) of Golden Temple took this Canopy to Delhi, when King George V. Prince of Wales came to Delhi Darbar.

The canopy was said to have been used in Darbar (Court). The British kept the canopy with them for over one year. Thereafter it was again brought back to Temple. It is believed that the real stones had been replaced with artificial ones.

As per the tradition, once used article is not put in the service of the temple. It was therefore put in the Toshakhana. The smallest stone in the canopy was not less than 500 rupees to 5000 rupees of that time and a big stone may cost as much as 35000 rupees. At the time of presentation its costs was estimated more than eight million rupees.

The other magnificent item of Tosha Khana is ancient Holy Bir of Guru Granth Sahib with gold binding. The fly whisker associated with it is also of gold. (ANI)

Too premature to comment on attack on Sri Sri: Police

Police have said it is too early to comment on the attack on Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravishankar and stated they are looking into all aspects of the incident.

“It is too premature to comment right away,” IGP Central Range, Kamal Panth told reporters here.

He said police have begun investigations. A police team and forensic experts are conducting examinations and their reports have to be awaited before arriving at any conclusion, he said.

Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravishankar yesterday escaped bid on his life when an unidentified gunman shot at his car when he was returning after delivering a discourse, an ashram official said.

“We are looking into all aspects,” Panth said and added that the ashram members had provided information on the incident.

He said security measures have been beefed up. “Yes we have strengthened security”.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Ramanagaram district) Deveraj said an unidentified person fired a round at the convoy when Sri Sri Ravishankar was leaving after satsang in his ashram last evening. The injured devotee was discharged after first aid at a local hospital, he said.

Deveraj said the whole area has been cordoned off. “We have closed all entry points and have begun combing operation inside the premises. The identity of the person is yet to be ascertained,” he said.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Home Minister V S Acharya confirmed Sri Sri Ravishankar was safe and a thorough investigation would be carried out.

One of his devotees sustained a minor injury on the thigh with the bullet brushing past.

The incident took place around 6.15 PM when Ravishankar was returning to his ‘Kutir’ by car after addressing a gathering at the ‘Satsang’

“I am absolutely safe,” 54-year-old Sri Sri Ravishankar said shortly after the incident.

Sri Sri Ravishankar, who has a wide following all over the country and abroad, where he has set up centres of his organisation, said he had gone ahead with his discourse even after the incident. He said he would convene a press meet today in this regard.

The spiritual guru told a TV channel that he had not received any threat earlier.

Sri Sri Ravishankar has popularised ‘Sudarshan Kriya’, a powerful breathing technique in India and overseas.

Ashram spokesperson Charu said the incident came to light only after the spiritual leader shared it with his followers during a satsang scheduled around 7 PM.

“We were not aware of it (shooting) till he shared it with us,” she said.

There was a huge crowd when the incident occurred and this could possibly be the reason why it was not immediately noticed and the unidentified man remained untraced, she said.

Sri Sri Ravishankar escapes bid on life

Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravishankar on Sunday escaped bid on his life when an unidentified gunman shot at his car when he was returning after delivering a discourse, an ashram official said.

“I am absolutely safe,” the 54-year-old founder of the Art of Living said shortly after the incident.

One of his devotees sustained a minor injury on the thigh with the bullet brushing past, ashram spokesperson Charu said.

The incident took place around 6.15 PM when Ravishankar was returning to his ‘Kutir’ by car after addressing a gathering at the ‘Satsang’, she said.

“We usually have a satsang from four PM every Sunday till around six where even people from neighbouring villages join us. Sri Sri had addressed those gathered at the Satsang and completed his discourse and was returning to his ‘kutir’ by car when the incident occurred,” she said.

Sri Sri Ravishankar, who has a wide following all over the country and abroad, where he has set up centres of his organisation, said he had gone ahead with his discourse even after the incident.

Karnataka Home Minister V S Acharya said central range IG Kamal Panth has been sent to the ashram to inquire about the incident. “There is no problem… everything is peaceful there,” he said.

The spiritual guru told a TV channel that he had not received any threat earlier.

Sri Sri Ravishankar has popularised ‘Sudarshan Kriya’, a powerful breathing technique in India and overseas. Meanwhile, Sri Sri Ravishankar urged his followers not to panic or be perturbed by the shooting incident.

In his message to the followers, he said, “Ahimsa Pratishthayaam Tat Sanidhav Vaira Taygah” (For one who is established in non-violence, all kinds of hostility ceases”, spokesperson of the ashram Aswin Nandkumar said.

“The guru has asked his followers not to panic or worry”, he said.

On beefing security measures at the ashram, another spokesperson said the spiritual guru generally does not prefer tight security and prefers to mingle and interact with his followers. But after this incident, the issue might have to be looked into, he said.

Traditional ‘Kahika Fair’ celebrated in Himachal Pradesh

Kullu (Himachal Pradesh), May 29 (ANI): Thousands of devotees converged to celebrate the traditional ‘Kahika Fair’ in Shirar village, near Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu town on Friday.

Sounds of hymns in the air marked the beginning of the festival in the village that was adorned with colourful canopies.

An important ritual observed during the festival is a mock sacrificial ceremony of a member of Naur (a tribe) and getting his life back from the gods.

“It is a common belief that during the festival all gods and goddesses come under a tree and an arrow is shot in the air. The arrow is considered so powerful that it takes the life of the Naur and he is declared dead,” said Rajesh Sharma, a local.

“Then the gods and goddesses use their prowess to give life to the dead Naur,” he added.

The natives here believe that the prayers performed during the festival sanctify the village and purify the souls of the people participating in it.

“The rituals performed during the Kahika festival purify the area and shuns evil spirits and that is why the sacrifice of the Naur’s life is performed and he comes back to life,” said Arun Kumar, a local.

Kumar appeared confident that the festival would bring prosperity in the village.

“This year the Naur-Megha-Yajna (a ritual performed in which a person from the Naur tribe is declared dead and is brought back to life by observing ceremonial prayers) was conducted peacefully and it will bring happiness and prosperity among us,” said Arun Kumar. (ANI)

Malaysia’s rebuilt Tirupati Venkateswara temple set to draw thousands of worshippers

Klang (Malaysia), May 19 (ANI): The newly rebuilt Sri Sundararaja Perumal temple, known worldwide as the Tirupati Venkateswara temple of Southeast Asia, will be the first all-granite and hand-carved religious place of its kind in Malaysia.

Devoted to the worship of Lord Vishnu, the temple will draw devotees in large numbers and has enlisted the efforts of 50 stone carvers and their families in Kanchipuram near Chennai to craft the all-granite temple.

Temple president S. Ananda Krishnan, who initiated the idea to rebuild the temple using granite, said work had began last year and would be completed in 2014.

“Stone blocks from Sirudamoor Hill, some 20km from Kanchipuram will be carved. No machines will be used so as not to disturb the living energy in the granite,” The Star quoted him, as saying.

“It is believed that Vishnu is in everything and using granite would cause the vibrations of the mantras to resonate at a higher level,” Krishnan said, adding that the granite structure follows the precise design formulas defined by southern Indian temple builders thousands of years ago.

He added that the Sri Sundararaja Perumal temple would be 15m high including a dome and copper crown. The first shipment of seven, 40ft containers of pillars weighing at least three tonnes will be brought in soon for assembling, Krishnan said.

R. Selvanathan, the chief executive officer of the Chennai-based Sri Vaidyanatha Sthapati Associates – an architect, sculptor and building firm – said the all-granite temple project was a rarity even in India where granite has yielded to concrete and steel. (ANI)

Karnataka devotees pierce their bodies to worship goddess

Davangere (Karnataka), May 11 (ANI): Devotees of the Goddess Mattu Mariamma in Karnataka”s Davangere town pierce their bodies with iron nails in an act of worship and to seek her blessings.

J-K locals find antique idols inside caves

Kathua (Jammu and Kashmir), May 6 (ANI): Locals in Jammu and Kashmir”s Kathua District have found several antique idols, including that of Lord Shiva (Hindu god) and Lord Sheshnag (Hindu serpent deity), insides the caves of Billawar town.

The villagers claimed that a shepherd once dreamt of Lord Shiva, who informed him about the presence of idols in the caves.

They said that the shepherd once took a woman suffering from pain in her back to the site, and after taking a dip in the water in the cave she was relieved of her backache.

“A shepherd dreamt of Lord Shiva telling him about the caves. He took the woman near the caves and she got rid of her pain after bathing in the holy water inside the caves. The yatra (journey) is on from the fifth day of Navratra (nine days and nights sacred to the Goddess) and is still continuing. First time in 18 years in this place, I have seen that Lord Shiva Himself is showering his blessings,” said Babu Singh, a devotee.

“Lord Sheshnag and Lord Shiva reside here. We have come to visit the place. A Shivling and idols of Lord Radha Krishna, and looking at the idols, you will see, water is flowing from Lord Shiva”s hair. People, who will bathe in the holy water would get rid of various diseases and Lord Shiva will grant them their wishes,” he added.

The Cave Committee formed by locals is making arrangements to make it easier for the devotees to visit the caves. Though the terrain is rough, as there is no direct path to the caves, hundreds of devotees throng the place daily to offer prayers.
Devotees had to cross the Ujh River, which comes on the way.

“It has Lord Sheshnag and Lord Shiva. It is a bit difficult to walk on the path. The committee has already started working to improve the path. Money is coming and the development work is on,” said Cave Committee President Satpal Gupta.

“The problem is that the water level of the Ujh River has increased, so people are not able to walk across. Donations are being raised for the development,” he added.

The regular visits of the devotees here has come as a blessing in disguise for the local people, as it has increased the scope of employment for them following the setting up of small shops outside the caves. (ANI)

Body-piercing ritual at Kochi Temple

Kochi, Mar. 31 (ANI): Devotees at Kerala’s Aaryyankavu Bhagwathi Temple have devised a new way of performing the banned ancient Thookkam, or body-piercing ritual.

In the original Thookam ritual, the back of the person willing to perform the ritual is pierced with sharp hooks and lifted up to a height of over 30 feet on a scaffold, before the bleeding victim is brought down and hooks taken out.

However, the new method doesn’t require the devotee to be hung or lifted.

“After a court put a ban on the ancient ritual of multiple body-piercing and hanging from rope, now only single piercing is done in the body and the person just stands still and does not hang. The devotees also fast for 41 days,” said Shiv Raman, a temple committee member.

In 2004 – following a widespread protest by social activists and even Hindu priests – the practice was banned by a court.

The legend behind the ritual goes back to the ancient days. Legend has it that even after slaying the demon Darika, the Goddess Kali remained bloodthirsty.

Hindu god Lord Vishnu then sent his mount, the giant bird Garuda, to Kali. Garuda gave the goddess some drops of blood, which pacified her thirst.

The ritual is performed based on this belief. (ANI)

The festival is celebrated on the full moon day after the Navratri to please Goddess Kamakhya, the consort of Lord Shiva.

After worshiping the goddess there, the devotees bring back the idol to its place.

“The idol of the goddess is worshipped in a temple nearby and after the worship rituals are finished there, the idol is brought back here. This is the Goddess” Holi,” said Sobha Kant Dobey, a tourist from Bihar.

The celebrations this year took place on a rainy day, which saw the devotees celebrating with great gusto.

“This is Mother”s power that it is her Holi today and it is raining as well. That”s why we believe in religion,” said Manik Deori, a priest.

The priests who participate in this festival are not allowed to eat outside the temple for 15 days.

It is only after the Holi celebrations that priests are permitted to eat at their homes. (ANI)

Ghost fair in Jharkhand witnesses a sea of humanity

Palamu (Jharkhand), March 27 (ANI): Though people all over the world visit religious places to seek blessings for happiness and a good fortune for themselves, an annual fair held in Jharkhand’s Palamu district attracts people who wish to free themselves of the suspected evil spirits’ influence.

Hundreds of devotees of tribal and non-tribal families participated in a unique the ‘Ghost fair’ hosted in the vicinity of Sheetala Mata temple here recently.

The large presence of believers during the annual fair felt like a literal sea of humanity near the temple located in the Haider Nagar. It is held during the nine days of Navratri festival here.

Devotees camped in tents in front of the temple and persons ”possessed” by ghosts were escorted to the temple where the priests and Tantriks (sorcerers) would perform various rituals and offer prayers before the Goddess.

During these rituals, the persons who are in trance, are believed to have been influenced by the divine power of the presiding deity.

People at the fair said that they arrived here after being unsatisfied by doctors for their respective medical problems.

“This is an age-old mystic temple. People have been visiting this temple for 50 to 60 years. They come here to fulfill their wishes, get rid of the evil spirits or any problem they are facing. The presiding deity of temple goddess relieves them of all the problems,” said Surendra Nath Tyagi, priest of Sheetala Mata temple, Hairderpur.

It is believed besides obviation from evil spirits, the devout visitors also have a belief that their all wishes will be realized after praying here by a pure heart and deep faith.

“After noticing such a sea of devotees at this temple, one can make out that there has to be some reality in this ritual, otherwise people would not visit this temple. I feel that this temple has some powers, that is why people come here to get rid of their problems,” said Meera Devi, one of the devotee.

This fair has been a popular event for several decades. (ANI)

London, March 25 (ANI): An Indian-origin British economist is baffled because a cult is hailing him as a Messiah.

Raj Patel, 37, from Golders Green, North London, was flooded with emails from followers of Share International following a TV interview in the US.

And with striking similarity to a scene in Monty Python”s Life Of Brian, wherein Brian is mistaken for the saviour, Raj was forced to say: “I”m not the messiah… I”m just an economics expert!”

It all started when Raj made a telly appearance two months ago to promote his book on the global financial crisis, The Value Of Nothing.

Just two days later, Benjamin Creme, 87, founder of Share International, declared the arrival of the Messiah his cult calls “Maitreya”.

He told followers: “Maitreya recently gave his first interview in America.

“The master of all the masters for the first time in human history himself came on a well-known television programme on a major network. But undeclared as Maitreya, just as one of us.”

Raj was mis-identified because he bears numerous prophesied characteristics of Maitreya.

Raj qualifies as Maitreya because just like him the saviour is believed to be dark-skinned, born in 1972 and raised in London;

Maitreya flew from India to Britain in 1977, which corresponds with the date Raj took a flight to the UK after holidaying in India;

Maitreya would make an appearance on TV and speak with a slight stutter – which Raj did on The Colbert Report show;

And Maitreya will immediately deny his identity just like Raj did.

“I started getting emails saying ”Are you the world teacher?”” the Sun quoted Raj, as saying.

He went on: “Then it wasn”t just random internet folk, but also friends saying, ”Have you seen this?”

“It”s absurd to be put in this position when I”m just some bloke.”

Even as Raj tried to distance himself from his holy credentials, two devotees from Detroit travelled 2,400 miles to meet him at a book signing in his current US home in San Francisco.

“They were really nice, straightforward people. They said they thought I was the Maitreya. They also said I had appeared in their dreams,” Raj said.

“I said, ”I”m really flattered you came all the way here, but it breaks my heart you spent all this money to meet someone who isn”t who you think he is.””

Crème, a Scot, established the cult in the 1950s. It believes that the 18 million-year-old Maitreya – who combines elements of Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism and Islam – has been living in the Himalayas for 2,000 years.

His arrival will unify humanity and make life better on Earth.

Share International has its HQ in Amsterdam while its offices are spread across the globe – in London, the US, Japan, France and Germany.

Creme has, however, refused to confirm or deny whether he believes Raj is his saviour.

Meanwhile Raj, who has since removed his contact details from his website, said: He said: “It frustrates me it might disappoint those looking for Maitreya that, in fact, I”m just an ordinary bloke.” (ANI)
