Ex-Andhra CM YSR buried with full state honours in native village

Pulivendula (Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh), Sep.4 (ANI): Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy, who tragically died in a helicopter crash on Wednesday morning, was on Friday buried with full state honours in his native village of Pulivendula in Kadapa District.

As the tricolour draped coffin carrying his body was taken to the burial site, the grief stricken crowd, which had gathered in tens of thousands, showered rose petals and other flowers on it. The outpouring of grief was palpable for all to see. YSR’s son, Jaganmohan Reddy and his other relatives went around the burial venue in an open truck with folded hands to thank the people for their presence and support at this tragic time in their lives.

Security persons had a hard time keeping the thronging crowd at bay to allow family members to perform the last rites. Close to 1500 security personnel were deployed at the venue to keep things under control.

As his coffin was placed inside the grave on the family estate by the side of the graves of his parents, as he had wished, YSR’s well-wishers showered mud, rice puffs, salt, flowers and wreathes on it. Some knelt on their knees and prayed for the departed soul. Tearful family members, including his grandchildren, gathered closely together to bid farewell.

Earlier, the tricolour-draped coffin was brought to YSR’s hometown by an Indian Air Force helicopter from Hyderabad.

After lying in state at the Lal Bahadur Shastri stadium in Hyderabad for a couple of hours, the coffin was taken to Hyderabad’s Begumpet Airport and transferred to the family estate in Pulivendula for final rites.

Leaders and politicians from different parties, including former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, BJP president Rajnath Singh and senior BJP leader L.K.Advani were among those who paid floral tribute to the departed leader.

Janata Dal (S) decides to stay with the Left front in Kerala

New Delhi July 4 (ANI): The National Executive meeting of the Janata Dal (Secular) has decided to remain with the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala.

Speaking to the media here to day after the meeting of party’s national executive committee, former Prime Minister and JDS chief H. D. Deve Gowda said any unit or individual who move, against the decision of the national executive will have to face action.

He also said the meeting has also decided to order its MLAs in Kerala to sit with the legislatures of LDF. The Party’s Kerala unit will submit a letter in this regard to the Speaker of the Kerala Assembly.

Today’s decision has put the party on the verge of a split again as its Kerala unit leader M. P. Veerendra Kumar is already opposing any alliance with LDF.

Veerendra Kumar left the party in 2006 opposing the formation of JDS and BJP government in Karnataka under the leadership of Kumarswamy.

The LDF in Kerala had denied ticket to Veerendra Kumar, which made him to stay away from campaigning during the of recently concluded general elections. (ANI)

Lawmakers shirking legislative duties: Goa law panel chief

Panaji, May 27 (IANS) Most legislative assemblies and parliament rarely have time for legislative duties, and instead lawmakers waste time by disrupting proceedings, former minister of state for law and chairman of the Goa law commission Ramakant Khalap said Wednesday.

Criticising the functioning of state legislatures and parliament, Khalap said that legislative issues were often neglected by the lawmakers.

“After the question hour and zero hour, there is no work happening. A shortest amount of time is given for legislative work. Most of the time goes in rushing into the well (of the house),” Khalap, a minister in the Deve Gowda-led United Front coalition government, told reporters here.

Justifying his complaint against lawmakers for neglecting their legislative chores, Khalap said that the Goa law commission, which had been appointed after a gap of over 40 years, was a case in point.

“You can judge for yourself. The last law commission was headed by the former speaker Govind Kamat forty years ago,” Khalap said, adding that law commissions, if regularly appointed, helped to weed out inadequacies and anomalies which creep into law over a period of time, other than making laws relevant to the times.

Khalap also said that a similar level of disdain shown by Goan legislators towards their basic duties, meant that various aspects related to law and legislation were in a state of neglect here. He said the state does not even have an inventory of applicable legislation, and one of the first tasks which the commission was undertaking was compilation of an exhaustive list of all the laws applicable in Goa.

The three member Goa law commission, headed by Khalap, has a tenure of one year and has been mandated to “examine existing legislations and to suggest suitable measures requiring changes or modifications with a view to co-ordinating, harmonizing and simplifying legislations to remove any anomalies, ambiguities and inequalities in them”.

The other members of the commission are Mario Pinto Almeida and Cleofato Coutinho.

JD (S) is a pillar of Third Front: Deve Gowda

Bangalore, May 13 (ANI): JD(S) chief H D Deve Gowda has rejected speculation that his party is parting ways with the Third Front, and joining the Congress-led coalition.

These speculations fueled after Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s meeting with H. D. Kumaraswamy last night.

“There is no rift in JD-S and it’s still the pillar of the Third Front. We have an important role to play in government formation,” Deve Gowda said, addressing a press conference here.

Defending his son, Kumaraswamy’s, meeting with the Congress president, Gowda said, ” Don’t read too much into the Sonia-Kumaraswamy meet. He met her as former chief minister of Karnataka.”

Dispelling reports that the Third Front was not intact, Gowda said the coalition will play an important part in government formation.

“I am not interested in becoming a King or a King maker”, while maintaining that the government formation was not possible at the Centre without the Third Front.

The Sonia-Kumaraswamy meeting on Tuesday triggered intense speculation whether the JD-S would also abandon the Third Front after the TRS led by K Chandrashekar Rao dumped the Front and jumped on the NDA bandwagon on Sunday. (ANI)

Party hoppers galore confuse Karnataka’s poll scenario

Bangalore, April 6 (IANS) Karnataka voters are in a quandary. Though familiar with most of the candidates in the poll battle, they are no longer sure who is in which party as the number of politicians switching sides is increasing as the voting dates approach.

Staunch Congressmen have suddenly turned strong loyalists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which to them was a ‘communal party’ even a day before changing sides.

Some who had left the Congress for the BJP are now realising that it has been ‘communal all along’ and are celebrating their home-coming to the Congress.

A few Congress and BJP men who had derided the Janata Dal-Secular as a ‘thande-makkala paksha’ (father and sons party) of former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda and his tribe, are ‘discovering’ that it is the only party that cares for the poor, the minorities and the oppressed.

The BJP, ruling Karnataka for the first time, leads in netting leaders from the Congress and the JD-S, a situation reminiscent of politicians flocking to it ahead of the 2004 Lok Sabha polls hoping that its ‘India Shining’ campaign would return the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to power in New Delhi.

The Congress and the JD-S have also had their men crossing over to each other, but their number is insignificant compared to what the BJP has bagged.

The latest to join the BJP bandwagon from the Congress was D.B. Chandre Gowda, who vacated his Chikmagalur seat in 1978 to enable Indira Gandhi to contest from a safe Congress harbour after her defeat and the rout of the Congress in northern India in the 1977 polls held after she lifted the emergency imposed in 1975.

The BJP is fielding him from the Bangalore North constituency against Congress veteran and former railway minister C.K. Jaffer Sharief.

Another Congressman, L.R. Shivarame Gowda, who joined the BJP along with Chandre Gowda, has been given the ticket for the Mandya constituency, held by M.H. Ambareesh of the Congress, a Kannada film actor and central junior minister. The BJP tried in vain to woo him.

The BJP has won over Congress strongman in north Karnataka Gurpadappa Nagmarpalli, who was a member of the state assembly from Bidar. He will now take on former Congress chief minsiter N. Dharam Singh in Bidar.

For Nagmarapalli, it is a double whammy. His son will be the BJP candidate for the bypoll for the Bidar assembly seat.

C.P. Yogeshwar, a Kannada film actor-producer and a realtor, has also latched on to the BJP after resigning from the Congress and the assembly. He is being fielded from Bangalore Rural against former chief minister and JD-S candidate H.D. Kumaraswamy and sitting member Tejaswini Gowda of the Congress.

Incidentally, the BJP had demanded action against Yogeshwar after complaints that he had taken people for a ride with promises of flats in his Mega City project on the outskirts of Bangalore that they never got.

The BJP eagerly welcomed these cross overs as Chandre Gowda, Shivareme Gowda and Yogeshwar belong to the politically powerful Vokkaliga community. The BJP did not have many Vokkaliga leaders and its support base is among Lingayats, another dominant community.

The BJP welcomed another Congress leader V. Somanna, who quit the party and the state assembly and will formally join the BJP next week. His son preceded him in joining the BJP ranks a few days ago.

Voting will take place in 17 constituencies in the first phase on April 23. In the remaining 11 constituencies, voting is scheduled for April 30. With the BJP nominating candidates for all 28 seats, any more new joinees will have to wait their turn for rewards.

The Congress managed to get H.T. Sangliana, a former Bangalore city police commissioner, who had won the Bangalore North Lok Sabha seat in 2004 on the BJP ticket. He is the Congress candidate from Bangalore Central, a new seat created following re-drawing of constituenices.

The Congress welcomed back former chief minister S. Bangarappa, who went to the BJP and later to the Samajwadi Party. He is being fielded from his home-district Shimoga against Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s son and BJP candidate B.Y. Rahavendra.

The JD-S, which enjoys huge clout among Vokkaligas, could only get a few second-rung Lingayat leaders from the BJP.

BJP-Sena urge Maharashtra to vote for ‘decisive Advani’

Mumbai, April 5 (IANS) A galaxy of leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena alliance here Sunday urged the people of Maharashtra to ‘oust’ the Congress-led government at the centre and bring the BJP-led NDA to power under the decisive leadership of L.K. Advani.

Speaking at a rally, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray, glancing at the massive turnout at the Shivaji Park in central Mumbai, said ‘seeing the enthusiastic gathering here, there is little doubt’ which alliance would be voted to power in the elections.

Urging the people of Mumbai and the state to vote for the alliance, Thackeray – turning to address veteran BJP leader Advani – said, ‘At the next rally after May 16, we want you to come here as the prime minister of Hindustan. Even Sena chief Bal Thackeray shall be there to welcome you.’ The crowd cheered its approval.

Discussing the issue of terrorism unleashed from across the border, Thackeray called upon the people of the country to unite. ‘If we are united, nobody will dare to look at us with an evil eye, if they do, we shall gouge their eyes,’ he declared.

During his brief speech, Thackeray trained his guns on both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. ‘A foreigner woman has grabbed the control of the country. What is the prime minister doing about it?’ he remarked.

Demanding a ‘decisive’ government headed by a firm leader, he said: ‘Today, there is no better leader in the country than Advani. We must ensure that the saffron flag flutter in New Delhi after the next elections.’

In a brief videographed speech that was played before the rally, Bal Thackeray demanded that nobody should vote for the Congress until Mohammed Ajmal Amir alias Kasab, the captured Pakistani terrorist after the Nov 26 attacks here, is hanged.

He admitted his body was weak and he could not address rallies like in the past. ‘In this country, if (H.D.) Deve Gowda could become PM, anybody can become PM. I am satisfied with only becoming the Shiv Sena chief,’ he said.

Addressing the rally, senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde said Advani was a tough leader like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Accusing the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government of failing to tackle the issue of terrorism, he urged people to vote for the tough and decisive BJP leader, Advani.

Former Lok Sabha speaker and senior Sena leader Manohar Joshi expressed confidence that the alliance would come to power after the next elections.

‘Advani shall become the next PM of India with the blessings of Chhatrapati Shivaji. It is important for the saffron flag to flutter in New Delhi for the security of the country,’ Joshi said.

In his speech, Advani said some states shall throw up surprising results in the next elections – Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and a couple of states from the south.

Regretting that two top alliance leaders – former prime minister A.B. Vajpayee and Bal Thackeray – both ailing, were not present, Advani said: ‘It is our loss that they are not amongst us here.

‘We miss them. At the same time, it is also a challenge for us to succeeed in the next elections with their blessings. We must not let them down,’ he said.

Earlier, other alliance leaders like Sena’s Subhash Desai and Ramdas Kadam, opposition leader in Maharashtra, and BJP state general secretary Vinod Tawde addressed the gathering.

All Third Front leaders aspirant to occupy PM seat: Paswan

New Delhi, Mar 15 (ANI): Union Steel Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Chief Ram Vilas Paswan on Sunday said that all the leaders in the Third Front were aspirants to occupy the chair of Prime Minister.

“An atmosphere is being created in the Third Front in the name of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. If you look at the Third Front, all are candidates; nobody is a follower, all of them are leaders. No one is the Prime Ministerial candidate in the Front,” Paswan said while addressing a press conference here.

Meanwhile, in Bangalore, the Janata Dal- Secular (JD-S) leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy asserted that the outfit would not have any problem if Mayawati was selected as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the Front.

“Our national President has already expressed several times that if Mayawati is accepted as the prime ministerial candidate from other parties of the Front, our party will not have any problem to support her as a Prime Minister,” Kumaraswamy observed.

India will hold the general election between April 16 and May 13, in which 714 million people will be casting their votes.

On March 2, former Prime Minister and Janata Dal- Secular (JD-S) Chief H. D. Deve Gowda had announced the formation of a Third Front, an alliance of eight parties, including the Left.

The parties, supporting Deve Gowda are: Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM), Forward Bloc, Republican Party of India (RPI), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Janata Dal Secular (JDS). (ANI)

Sanjay Dutt does a ‘Munnabhai’ at Lucknow rally

Lucknow, Mar 15 (ANI): Bollywood actor-turned-politician and socialist Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Sanjay Dutt re-enacted role in the popular movie ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ while addressing youth activists in his constituency, Lucknow, on Saturday.

“I am not here to give a speech. I am here to work. We will work together. This cycle (poll symbol of regional Samajwadi Party (SP)) is mine, and we will take this cycle to Delhi,” said Dutt.

Dutt, whose nomination hinges on the Election Commission’s decision vis-a-vis the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, said that he would strive to work for the welfare of the people.

Addressing the rally, party general secretary Amar Singh said that the newly revived Third Front would not have any prospects without the Congress party.

“Prakash Karat, Deve Gowda or Jayalalitha, no one is capable of forming the Central Government without Congress support,” he said.

The SP and Congress have at present agreed to a loose seat-sharing deal on majority of seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Ten parties, comprising BSP, some regional parties and the Communists, came together to launch the ‘Third Front’ ahead of general elections beginning next month.

The Third Front, which have 70 seats between them in the 543-member Lower House of Parliament, will take on the Congress party and the BJP. (ANI)

BJD not to support UPA, NDA at Centre

New Delhi,Mar 14 (ANI): The Biju Janata Dal Chief and Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday said that his party would not support either a Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) or a BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre.

Patnaik’s statement came a day after the Communist Party of India (CPI) General Secretary A. B. Bardhan met him to persuade him to join the Third Front.

The BJD, however, said his party would consider its move only after the polls.

When asked about the speculations that the BJD may rejoin the NDA after the general elections, Patnaik said he was in no mood to do business with the BJP leadership either at the Centre or at the state level.

Since the BJD has snapped ties with the NDA, many political parties have been trying to persuade him for a possible alliance.

Apart from Left leaders, the Janata Dal- Secular (JD-S) chief H. D. Deve Gowda had also invited the BJD leader to participate in the launching rally of the newly-formed Third Front on March 12. ANI)

Third Front not to project PM candidate ahead of Lok Sabha elections: Bardhan

Bhubaneswar, Mar 13 (ANI): The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Friday said that the Third Front would not announce any candidate for Prime Minister’s post before the Lok Sabha elections are held.

“The Third Front will not project anyone as its Prime Ministerial candidate during electioneering,” said A. B. Bardhan, General Secretary of CPI.

Bardhan said the question of Prime Minister would be taken into consideration only after the elections.

Bardhan also said he would meet the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief and Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to discuss his party’s participation in the Third Front.

Bardhan’s remark came a day after the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati’s senior representative S. C. Mishra said at the Third Front rally in Karnataka’s Tumkur district that the party wanted to make Mayawati prime minister.

However, the TDP leader N. Chandrababu Naidu said the Front will have a meeting with Mayawati on March 15 to discuss issues like its prime ministerial candidate.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) leader Sitaram Yechury has already met Patnaik on March 8 to persuade him to join the Third Front.

The Janata Dal- Secular (JD-S) leader H. D. Deve Gowda and TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu had also spoken to the BJD supremo on the subject.

The BJD, however, has refused to participate in any front before the elections though it will enter into seat-sharing arrangement with some parties, including the Left. (ANI)
