405th installation anniversary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib

Agra, Sep 19(ANI): People of all religions and communities gathered to celebrate the 405th anniversary of the installation of the Sikh holy scriptures, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, at Gurudwara Maithan in Agra.

This was a significant landmark for the Sikhs, as the 275-year-old handwritten scripture, whose front pages are written with gold, was put on display for the devotees.

“The Guru Granth Sahib has the preaching or ‘bani’ of famous poets like Kabir ji, Guru Ravidas ji and Baba Farid ji. It is symbol of humanity and so people of all the religions have gathered here to celebrate the ‘Prakash Parv’, the installation ceremony together,” said Kanwldeep Singh, President of Sri Gursikh Sabha.

Also on display was a miniature scripture of Guru Granth Sahib, which has been preserved at the Gurudwara Maithan for the past 15 years.

“We have Guru Granth sahib of 1 X 1 inches long. The British for the convenience of Sikh soldiers especially designed the holy book during the First World War, as they could not carry a normal sized book in the battlefield. The miniature Guru Granth Sahib was printed in Germany. It was kept in a silver box,” said Gyani Kashmir Singh, head Granthi of Gurudwara Maithan.

To mark the anniversary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib, special prayers were also held in the Gurudwara premises, which once the house of Mai jassi that was visited by Guru Sri Tegh Bahadur.he gurudwara is currently undergoing renovation and will be expanded to facilitate the large number of devotees visiting the shrine.

A total of 20 million dollars will be spent on renovation and construction of new Gurudwara, a 100-bed hospital and a community hall.

Gurudwara Maithan also upheld the tradition of Langar, which has been followed over the centuries. Guru Arjan Dev and Mata Ganga set the precedent of preparing and serving food to the hungry, in the langar hall, where all social, economic and religious barriers collapse and all – the laborer, the lord, the peasant and the prince, are treated alike and served the same food in the same manner.

This is a practice of great social significance, and it is the key to the understanding of Sikhism. By Brijesh Sharma (ANI)

Majuli Island inhabitants pray to stop soil erosion

Majuli (Assam), Sep 12 (ANI): The inhabitants of Majuli Island in Assam perform a Hindu ritual to check the rapid soil erosion near the banks of the river Brahmaputra.

Swelling water of river Brahmaputra river has eroded the land and the residents fear that their houses near the banks of the river might get washed away.

“We mainly depend on the divine spirit, so we have come to the shore of the river to pray to the divine spirit which has caused us to surrender ourselves having no other means to save ourselves and the holy land,” said Bhabhananda Dev Goswami, Benganati Satradhikar.

He added that the erosion has continued. Majuli is home to many wild birds and animals. Due to the rapid erosion this monsoon, the existence of a famous Benganati Satra (a holy shrine) is in danger. The shrine is among the oldest of its kind.

“People of this land believe and depend on this kind of ritual for their existence and survival. We do believe in modern technologies, but religious rituals are above all. So, today all the satradhikars along with the followers of Majuli have gathered here to pray to the divine god to save this place from rapid erosion,” said Pitamber Dev Goswami, Aunati Satrdhikar.

Every year, torrential monsoon rains create panic in Assam, causing the mighty river and its tributaries to breach embankments, displacing thousands of families. (ANI)

Health camp opened to help Assam’s flood victims

Jorhat, Sep. 5 (ANI): A health camp was opened on Saturday for flood-affected people of Phooloni village and in its neighbouring areas in Assam.

The camp has the facilities for medical examination and free distribution of medicines.

Phooloni is one of the many villages in Majuli islands of the state, which was inundated by floodwaters following breach in an embankment of river Brahmaputra last moth.

The flood which displaced thousands of people from 70 villages made people susceptible to waterborne diseases.

The camp is a precautionary measure to give timely medical assistance to the people thereby preventing spread of any disease.

The camp, which will continue for a week, has been organised by the Majuli Sub-Divisional Administration, Jorhat.

The villagers are happy that they are getting free medical assistance.

“We are happy with the government’s initiative to provide free medical checkup and distribute free medicines to people devastated by flood. We also thank those who are helping us at this critical time,” said Dev Singh, a villager.

While many villagers have returned to their houses, many are still living in safer areas. The world’s largest river island was submerged for the second time this year as the Brahmaputra River breached an embankment in Matmora region in August.

The floods were caused by incessant heavy rains for five days when it breached an embankment.

Heavy rainfall, upstream caused the second wave of flooding on the whole Upper Majuli area and displaced around 30 thousand people, and destroyed thousands of hectares of crop. (ANI)

Vettori cleverest finger spinners in the world, says Boock

Colombo, Aug 30(ANI): Former New Zealand cricketer Stephen Boock reckons that captain Daniel Vettori is one of the cleverest finger spinners to grace the cricketing world.

“Everyone knows what Dan bowls: little spinners that turn away [from the right-hander] or ones that skid through, that’s the guts of it. There’s no secrets in his armoury but the way he uses what he’s got is the best I’ve seen,” Boock told the Sunday Star-Times.

“What you’ve got to do is be able to read the wicket and work out what is about this wicket that will give me the best result. How fast should I bowl, how much effort should I put into turning he ball. Dan either does that naturally or by learning,” he added.

Speaking after Vettori double feat of 3000 runs and 300 wickets, Boock said Vettori’s intelligence as a bowler was without peer, as he possessed the ability to figure up the pitch in order to adjust his bowling pace and spin to get the best results, Stuff.co.nz reports.

“Dan’s not a flamboyant player, but he’s a clear thinker who has a good understanding of cricket and he will have no expectation that he will be treated as a movie star because that’s not what he is: he’s a spin bowler who works very hard,” Boock said.

He further said that if Vettori keeps on playing for another four-five years, he could go beyond Sir Richard Hadlee as New Zealand’s wicket-taker and could join Kapil Dev. (ANI)

Indian origin scientist finds tropical storms endure over wet land, fizzle over dry

Washington, August 27 (ANI): A scientist of Indian origin from Purdue University, in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, has determined in a new research that tropical storms endure over wet land, and fizzle when conditions are dry.

More than 30 years of monsoon data from India showed that ground moisture where the storms make landfall is a major indicator of what the storm will do from there.

If the ground is wet, the storm is likely to sustain, while dry conditions should calm the storm.

“Once a storm comes overland, it was unclear whether it would stall, accelerate or fizzle out,” said Dev Niyogi, Indiana state climatologist and associate professor of agronomy and earth and atmospheric sciences.

“We found that whether a storm becomes more intense or causes heavy rains could depend on the land conditions – something we’d not considered. Thus far we’ve looked at these storms based mainly on ocean conditions or upper atmosphere,” he added.

Niyogi said tropical storms gain their strength from warm ocean water evaporation.

“The same phenomenon – the evaporation from the ocean that sustains the storms – could be the same phenomenon that sustains that storm over land with moisture in the soil,” he said.

“The storm will have more moisture and energy available over wet soil than dry,” he added.

Storm data fed into a model showed that higher levels of ground moisture would sustain Indian monsoon depressions.

The model’s prediction was proven when compared to ground conditions for 125 Indian monsoons over 33 years, where storms sustained when the ground was wet at landfall.

Knowing the sustainability of a storm could lead to better predictions on flooding and damage inland before a monsoon or a hurricane makes landfall.

“We think the physics is such that we could see similar results more broadly, such as in the United States,” Niyogi said.

Niyogi said the next step is to use the model and ground moisture data to test these theories for hurricanes in the United States. (ANI)

100,000 Indians have signed a petition to free Sarabjit, claims his lawyer

Lahore/Islamabad, Aug.27 (ANI): Over 100,000 people in India, including former test cricketers and chief justices, have signed a petition addressed to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari seeking clemency for Sarabjit Singh, an Indian currently on death row in a Pakistani prison.

Awais Sheikh, the counsel for Sarabjit, was quoted by a private television channel as saying that said he had brought back a mercy petition with more than 100,000 signatures from a recent visit to India.

“The signatories include former test cricketer Kapil Dev, the Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari, Syed Amin Hashmi of the Ajmer Sharif shrine, former Chief Justices R S Mongia and Rajindar Sachar, members of Indian human rights groups, Christian and Muslim bodies, doctors, engineers, lawyers, farmers and students,” Sheikh said.

Sheikh said he would submit the mercy petition to the President and also apprise him about the sentiments of the Indians in this regard.

“Since Sarabjit has been in prison for long, his sentence can be commuted to life imprisonment under the law,” he said. Commuting Sarabjit’s sentence will help improve relations between India and Pakistan, he added.

Sarabjit has been on death row since he was convicted for alleged involvement in four bomb blasts in Pakistan’s Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990. His family insists that he was wrongly convicted for the bombings.

Though he was to be hanged on April 1 last year, Pakistani authorities put off his execution indefinitely after Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani intervened in the matter. (ANI)

Now, a motorbike, which runs on air-pressure!

Ludihana, May 13 (ANI): A group of engineering students in Ludhiana has developed an eco-friendly motorbike which runs on air-pressure and doesn’t require fuel.
The 100cc bike equipped with two compressed air cylinders, gives a mileage of 11 miles per hour, which the students have plans to increase with some changes in near future.

Students of Auto Engineering Department at the Guru Nanak Dev Polytechnic College in Ludhiana have invented this air-powered bike.

They claim that it is the world’s first 100cc motorcycle powered by air and can help eliminate pollution to a great extent.

“There are bikes that run on batteries, but a lot of time is spent in charging them. In an air bike, you just need to fill air through a compressor. If we develop its air tank and reprocess the exhaust air, the capacity of this air bike can be increased, ” said Akashdeep Singh, one of the innovative students.

“The main advantage is that it is pollution-free as its exhaust is cold air. The Defence personnel can also use the bike, as thermal radiation cameras cannot detect it. Also, the engine of this bike can work underwater and breathes air from its storage tank, which in turn sucks it from the atmosphere,” said Balbir Singh, another student.

Having created the environment-friendly bike, the college students opine that it might not look very hi-tech and sophisticated for now, but it is a step in the right direction for a greener Earth.

“The idea of an air bike was conceived as our energy resources are being depleted day-by-day and pollution level is rising. Keeping all this in mind we have designed a 100cc bike which runs on air pressure technique,” said Jagraj Singh Kaul, Head of the Department, Auto Engineering Department.

Established in 1953, Guru Nanak Dev Polytechnic College (GNDPC) is one of the oldest engineering institutions in north India and is a pioneer in technical education.

An ISO-certified institution, the GNDPC is committed to improve technical excellence to achieve global standards.

The polytechnic has set up its own Electrical and Electronics Laboratories Library and Computer Center under World Bank assisted projects.

And the air-powered bike is an innovation that makes the college proud.

In future, Motor companies can perfect this technology and produce air-powered vehicles. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

UML, Sadhawana decide to pull out of govt

Barkat Sidhu keeping the joy of Sufi singing alive

Patiala, April 20 (ANI): Barkat Sidhu, an exponent of the Patiala gharana, is a sufi singer whose soul-stirring voice moves the listeners with the poetry of timeless poets like Bulleh Shah and Shah Hussain Farid.

Sidhu’s rendition of Sufi poets’ compositions touches listeners’ heart.

“I had keen interest in music since my childhood. The Punjab state was not well developed at that time. I spent my childhood in my maternal home in Shahpur. I used to go to various villages to sing `Qawalis’. There was no electricity in the villages and people used to light `diyas’ – or small earthen lamps. One person used to carry that lamp and we took a round of the village singing Malki-Keema, Heer-Ranjha, Laila-Majnu, Sassi-Punnu, Shirin-Fariyad,” said Barkat Sidhu, the Sufi Singer.
Sidhu tells that he started singing sufi songs as a child. He takes pride while sharing that his family is descendant of the Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev’s friend and a noted musician Bhai Mardana.

“I love to sing sufi songs and Shabad Kirtan (hymns). I faced a lot of difficulties in my life but I never accepted defeat. God helped me and with Guru’s grace, I continued singing sufi songs. A number of sufi singers came after me, who are very rich and own huge property and have money. There were instances when I came back empty handed after my performances. But continued with Sufi singing only and I also urge others to take it up,” says Barkat Sidhu.
Sidhu speaks with a philosophical mind when he says the awards are a sign of respect and love of the people. But when it comes to survival, everything becomes meaningless. One cannot compromise with hunger. An artist should be given some money along with the awards. It is very important to have money to fulfill the needs of the family. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

Maoists bag three seats in Nepal by-polls; NC suffers setback

Shirish B Pradhan Kathmandu, Apr 12 (PTI) Nepal’s ruling Maoists have bagged three out of six Parliamentary seats, including one from the main opposition NC’s stronghold, in the April 10 by-polls in what is seen as a boost to former rebels against whom a stir was launched by the ally CPN-UML which asked them to rein in their “violent” cadres. Unified CPN-Maoist retained Rolpa and Kaski constituencies besides registering victory in Kachanpur, which was a Nepali Congress (NC) stronghold, in the by-elections for six vacant seats of the 601-strong Constituent Assembly.

NC, CPN-UML and Madhesi People’s Rights Forum received one seat each in Morang-7, Morang-5 and Dhanusha-5 constituencies respectively. In Rolpa-2 constituency, Maoist candidate Santosh Budha Magar won the seat vacated by Prime Minister Prachanda, who had emerged victorious from two places in last year’s Constituent Assembly polls.

Another Maoist candidate Krishna Bahadur Gurung bagged Kaski1 constituency, which was vacated by Maoist minister Dev Gurung who was also elected from two places last year. In a jolt to the Nepali Congress, the opposition party was defeated by the Maoists in Kachanpur-4 constituency vacated by its leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, while in Dhanusha-5 its candidate Chandra Mohan Yadav, son of President Ram Baran Yadav, lost to CPN-UML’s Raghubir Mahaseth.

Nepal Maoists get boost in by-election

Shirish B. Pradhan Kathmandu, Apr 11 (PTI) Nepal’s ruling Maoist party, which had appeared isolated, has received a boost in the by-elections, winning two out of five declared seats, including one from the stronghold of the main Opposition party. UCPN-Maoist won Kanchanpur constituency from the Nepal Congress while retaining the Kaski constituency.

In Rolpa constituency vacated by Prime Minister Prachanda, the UCPN-Maoist’s candidate is being challenged by its own break-away faction. The Maoists have done well despite growing public criticism of their seven-month-old government.

The ruling Maoists have performed better than expected in the aftermath of severe criticism from the opposition for resorting to violence and intimidatory tactics. Of the five seats declared so far, three have been bagged by the leftists with one each being won by the Nepali Congress and Terai based Madhesi People s Rights Forum.

Former Prime Minister G P Koiral’s nephew Shekhar Koirala was elected from Morang 7 constituency. Maoists leader Krishna Bahadur Gurung has won the Kaski constituency, which was earlier won by the Maoist Law Minister Dev Gurung.

Counting for the sixth and last Rolpa 2 constituency is, however, still in progress, the EC said. PTI.

Nepal bypolls boost ruling Maoists

Kathmandu, April 11 (IANS) Nepal’s ruling Maoist party has received a boost in by-elections to six seats, with the results coming in Saturday indicating it was poised to win three, including an opposition stronghold.

Nepal’s biggest opposition party, the Nepali Congress (NC), suffered setbacks in two seats in Friday’s bypolls. The Maoists have done well despite growing public criticism of their seven-month-old government.

The Kanchanpur seat had been a stronghold of former NC prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and returned him to parliament in the 2008 election. Vacated after Deuba won from a second constituency as well, the bastion fell to the Maoist grassroots leader whom Deuba had humbled, Harish Thakulla.

Thakulla, also known as Kamal Chhetri during the Maoists’ 10-year ‘People’s War’, who had lived in India’s Mumbai city for several years, supporting himself by hawking newspapers, pulled off a surprise victory over NC candidate Ek Raj Joshi.

The NC also lost its Dhanusha citadel, which had voted for the party in 2008.

NC lawmaker Ram Baran Yadav had resigned from the seat after being elected the first president of the republic of Nepal, replacing deposed King Gyanendra as the head of state.

Though Yadav’s son, radiologist Chandra Mohan Yadav, was fielded by the NC, the debutant politician floundered in third place with the regional party, Terai Madesh Loktantrik Party, and the ruling Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist, which is a member of the Maoist-led coalition government, fighting neck and neck.

The NC however got a shot in the arm when its candidate Shekhar Koirala won from Morang district in eastern Nepal.

Koirala, nephew of NC chief and former prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala and uncle of Bollywood diva Manisha Koirala, had been humbled in the same constituency last year by the new regional party, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum. This time however he clawed back, with the blessings of his octogenarian uncle who was among the first few to cast their votes, winning by a slender margin of 692 votes.

In the other seat in Morang, there were no surprises. Won last year by the Forum, it voted for the same party’s Jay Ram Yadav, with the Maoists coming a close second.

Counting will start late for the seat in Rolpa, regarded as the cradle of the Maoist movement and won last year by Maoist supremo Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda.

It is likely to be retained by the ruling party despite a dissenter contesting as an independent candidate.

Besides Kanchanpur, Maoist contestant Krishna Bahadur Gurung won from Kaski, the district that last year voted for Maoist Law Minister Dev Gurung.

Hadlee inducted into ICC Cricket Hall of Fame

Wellington, Apr.3 (ANI): Legendary New Zealand all-rounder Sir Richard Hadlee was formally inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame during the lunch interval on the first day of the third and final Test between New Zealand and India at Basin Reserve, Wellington on Friday.

The 57-year-old from Christchurch, who was appointed as a Member of British Empire (MBE) in 1981 and knighted in 1990, received his commemorative cap from ICC President David Morgan as ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat looked on.

After the ceremony Hadlee said: “Obviously, I am delighted. I have been fortunate enough during my life in cricket to be acknowledged in so many different ways and they are all very special in their own rights.

“But when you are one of the 55 in the history of the game that goes back to the 1800s through to the 20th century and when you look at some of the players who have also been inducted, to be part of that particular elite group is something very special indeed. So I am very grateful to be recognised in that way.

“This honour is right up there with the others. So many fantastic players have been recognised, some that I have played against, others that I watched and read about as a youngster, and many others in the early 1900s that were legendary in their own right and fantastic role models.

“I have a lot of respect for this award as I understand what all the players in this particular group had to go through to be able to become champion players.

“It would have been nice if my father (Walter Hadlee) was around. He would have been as proud as me to get this recognition. He had advised that I always play hard and play competitively to win. But he wanted the values of fair play and sportsmanship to be upheld always.”

ICC President David Morgan said: “Sir Richard is without question one of world cricket’s greatest all-rounders with 431 Test wickets and 3,124 runs. These numbers tell a story.

“Sir Richard was the first bowler to take 400 Test wickets and I had the additional pleasure of seeing him perform in partnership with Clive Rice at Nottingham’s Trent Bridge.

“Today is a proud day for New Zealand and Nottingham and it is an honour for me to induct Sir Richard into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.”

Hadlee, one of five sons of former New Zealand captain Walter, is the only New Zealander in the initial intake of 55 players in the Hall of Fame*, a joint venture between the ICC and the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA).

Hadlee is regarded as one of the greatest exponents of the new ball. He was one of the four greatest all-rounders during the 1980s along with Imran Khan of Pakistan, England’s Sir Ian Botham and Kapil Dev of India.

Hadlee played 86 Tests from 1973 to 1990 in which he took 431 wickets (at the time a world record), including the wicket of Devon Malcolm off his last ball in Test cricket, and also scored 3,124 runs. In 115 ODIs, he claimed 158 wickets and contributed 1,751 runs. (ANI)

Hema Malini disappointed over SC decision against Sanjay Dutt

Ranchi, Apr. 1 (ANI): Actor-turned politician Hema Malini has expressed disappointment over the Supreme Court decision, which denied Sanjay Dutt the permission to contest in Lok Sabha elections.

“It was very disappointing. Sanjay is a great human being just like his father. But his past record came in the way due to which the Supreme Court denied him permission to contest in the polls. If he would have contested the elections from Lucknow, then he would have definitely won,” BJP MP Malini told media in Ranchi.

On Tuesday, Supreme Court had issued a directive that Sanjay Dutt, convicted for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, cannot contest in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

BJP’s star campaigner termed Varun Gandhi as ‘inexperienced leader’.

“The way Varun Gandhi made the statement was not good. Whatever he wanted to say he could not do that in a proper manner. I feel that he wanted to say something but due to lack of experience, he couldn’t convey his message in the right manner,” Malini said.

She also said that SP leader Amar Singh seems more interested in movies than politics.

“It seems Amar Singh wants to become an actor more than a politician. If I make a movie then I will assign him a role and I am sure he will agree to it. There are many big leaders who will work in my movies,” Malini said.

Singh, 53, reportedly has bagged a role as Union Home Minister in Dev Anand’s forthcoming film ‘Charge Sheet’. (ANI)
