Witnesses sought for Kalgoorlie bashing, robbery

Police have released more details about two men accused of robbing a man the night he was found dead in Kalgoorlie.

Last Friday, 49 year old Grant Charles Jesser was drinking at the Exchange Hotel in Kalgoorlie.

Hours later he was found dead in an alley on Maritana Street.

26 year old Gregory Cullen was charged with causing grievous bodily harm but it has now been revealed Mr Jesser was also robbed during the evening.

Detective Sergeant Paul Robinson says police are trying to piece together his final movements.

“The last time that Mr Jesser was actually seen alive was leaving the Exchange hotel where there was an incident with another person. The next time he was located he was deceased, in the alleyway near National Australia Bank.”

Police say the two incidents are not related.

Two Kalgoorlie men, aged 19 and 20, have been charged with stealing and will face court next month.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who was in the area on Thursday night to contact police.

Sergeant Robinson says there were a lot of potential witnesses because the town was hosting the International Miners Games.

“I believe that there are people out there that did witness this incident and I would appeal to them to please come forward.”

Reporting crime? Send an email

Northam police are encouraging local residents and businesses to sign up to a new online crime prevention initiative.

E-watch is a cyber neighbourhood watch program, designed to increase information sharing between police and the community.

The email service can be used by police as a preventative tool, to warn the community of specific crime trends, and also allows the public to confidentially inform police about criminal behaviour.

Detective Sergeant Jade Smith hopes the email service will encourage greater information sharing.

“Obviously, we’ve got our normal 131 444, 000 and Crime Stoppers numbers, but this is just another method of people being able to report stuff to us,” she said.

“In this electronic age, I think people are more enthusiastic about sending emails through as opposed to phoning and this is one way they can do it.”

Arrests over EFPTOS skimming scam

Seven members of what police describe is the most sophisticated card skimming syndicate ever seen in Western Australia have been arrested.

It is alleged they installed an EFTPOS machine fitted with a skimming device at a Perth supermarket and used the information to fraudulently obtain hundreds of thousands of dollars from customers bank accounts.

It is understood much of the money was laundered overseas.

Police also seized a significant amount of equipment used to tamper with ATM devices and EFTPOS devices.

Detective Sergeant Duncan Taylor says it is alleged the seven men played different roles in the fraud syndicate.

“There’s a range, we’ve certainly arrested mid to high-tier members of the syndicate on this occasion and some of the items involved in the seizure would indicate we’ve got some of the more technical members of the syndicate,” he said.

Police seek man over Kalgoorlie death

Police investigating a suspicious death in Kalgoorlie are still searching for a man they believe can assist in their inquiry.

49-year-old Grant Charles Jesser was found unconscious in an alley off Maritana Street in the centre of town early yesterday morning.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate him but he died at the scene.

Police investigating the death want to speak to 29-year-old Gregory Peter Cullen who is believed to be driving a silver/white 2003 Holden Astra Hatch with New South Wales number plates.

Detective Sergeant Ian Jansen says police are not yet sure how Mr Jesser died.

“I can’t tell you any more about his injuries, other than that the injuries don’t appear to be self-inflicted and we can’t account for them so we are treating the death as suspicious.”

Three injured in drug lab blast

Three men have been injured, one critically in an explosion at a suspected illegal drug laboratory in the Perth suburb of Doubleview.

Detective Sergeant Craig White says emergency services were called to the Huntriss Road duplex last night.

“As a result two people were quite badly injured, and one was superficially injured and we’ve got some officers from the other part of our team there at the moment,” he said.

“At this stage I believe there is a lab there and that may have been part of the reason why there was an explosion.”

One man is in a critical condition at Royal Perth Hospital and the other two injured men are stable.

Meanwhile, at Rockingham, south of Perth, a couple in their 30s are being questioned about the discovery of a methamphetamine lab at their house, a loaded shotgun, ammunition and cannabis was also found.

Police say they lived at the property with two children who are under 10 years old.

They have been taken into care.

Toy gun used in string of robberies

Police have revealed a gun used in a series of attempted armed robberies in Bunbury yesterday was a toy.

Police allege a 28-year-old man and his 36-year-old girlfriend bought a toy revolver from a toy store in Victoria Street yesterday morning and used it to threaten tellers and shop assistants at a bank and discount store.

They then allegedly held up a pharmacy in South Bunbury, escaping with an amount of cash.

They were arrested at a local caravan park a short time later.

The pair are alleged to have also been involved in three previous robberies in Perth and Mandurah.

Detective Sergeant Darren Clifton says the man has been charged with three counts of armed robbery and attempted armed robbery.

He says the woman has been charged with being an accessory after the fact.

“Three very serious armed robberies committed in the Bunbury area in the space of a few hours which terrified quite a number of female employees at various premises.”

The pair will appear in Bunbury Magistrates Court today.

Wild dogs kill men, body parts eaten: Coroner

The Northern Territory Coroner says it has taken the deaths of two men for agencies to deal with packs of dangerous wild dogs that roam Alice Springs town camps.

The Coroner Greg Cavanagh has handed down his findings into the deaths of the men at the Hidden Valley Town Camp

He found 26-year-old Michael Anthony Hardy died in July 2008 of acute asphyxiation while being attacked by a pack of dogs.

Mr Cavanagh heard from various witnesses who discovered Mr Hardy’s body after the “sustained attack” by “a number of dogs”.

“There is no doubt that it would have been a most horrifying experience for anyone, particularly given the extremely serious injuries that he received,” Mr Cavanagh said.

“[One witness] described the body as naked and having a large chunk out of the leg.”

Detective Sergeant Leith Phillips told the coroner there was “not an ounce of flesh from his knee to his hip on one leg”, and “the deceased had lost part of his scrotum”.

An autopsy report showed Mr Hardy had a blood alcohol level of 0.224% and had “hundreds” of abrasions over his body.

“There is no doubt in my mind that this would have been a terrifying attack and a terrible way for the deceased to have spent the last moments of his life,” Mr Cavanagh said.

Father-of-two, Robert James Roe, 47, was attacked in the same camp a month later.

The coroner heard he died from a heart attack, and although there were severe injuries to his skin and limbs, there was no evidence to indicate that those injuries occurred prior to his death.

“It is very clear that his body was, shortly after his death, attacked and eaten by dogs, which is a serious and tragic matter indeed,” Mr Cavanagh said.

Both men died in open areas of the camp.

Mr Cavanagh found that dog control was the responsibility of the Alice Springs Town Council, but their efforts had been hampered by the cultural rules imposed by the Tangentyere Aboriginal Council restricting access to the town camps.

Mr Cavanagh said that restriction had now been resolved, and dog control had improved in the camps.

He urged the Federal government to extend its funding for dog control.

Cop put ex-girlfriend on dating site, court told

A policeman alleged to have falsely represented his former girlfriend on a matchmaking site has been granted home detention bail by Adelaide Magistrates Court.

Detective Sergeant Darren James Clohesy, 40, who is suspended from duty, is charged with stalking, attempting to obstruct or pervert the course of justice and six counts of breaching bail.

It is understood prosecutors will allege he created a profile on an internet site pretending to be his former girlfriend, without her consent.

It will be alleged he and co-accused, Kellie Ann Hunter, told respondents to go to the former girlfriend’s address.

It is also alleged Clohesy tried to intimidate his co-accused into taking responsibility for the matter.

Clohesy hid from the media as he was released from the court on bail.

There will be another hearing in April.

UK man makes up kidnap story to avoid wife’s nagging

London, Jul 4 (ANI): A man, who was weary of his wife’s nagging, made up a story that he had been kidnapped at knifepoint as he dared not tell her he had been to the bookies.

Peter Woodward, 57, told a court that in order to get away from his wife, he made up the story about being abducted by three armed men, and even reported it to the police at Crosby, Liverpool.

Prosecutor Sandra Arden told South Ribble Magistrates Court that on the morning of April 2, Woodward, of Leyland, Lancashire, had gone for a drive and then to the bookmaker’s, where he won some money.

On his return, to explain where he had been, the part-time cleaner made up a story that three men had carjacked him and made him drive 25 miles to Liverpool before robbing him of 90 pounds.

“A major investigation was commenced and the victim re-driven along the route,” the Daily Express quoted Arden as saying.

“In the end, he just wanted to go for a ride without answering to his wife.

“He went for a drive to Liverpool and thought up the kidnapping story to account for his movements,” she said.

But following a thorough police investigation, he admitted that he had in fact visited a bookmaker’s and had a large amount of cash on him.

He was arrested on May 6, and admitted falsely reporting an offence to police.

On July 3, Woodward, who was supported by his humiliated but loyal wife Janet, was ordered to pay 1,000 pounds compensation for the 185 man-hours the police put in investigating his claims at a cost of more than 5,000 pounds.

“It was due to the extensive investigation that Mr Woodward’s lies were uncovered,” Detective Sergeant John Cass, of South Ribble CID, said.

“All allegations made to the police have to be fully investigated, but it is a sad fact that some people do fabricate being victims of crime.

“Mr Woodward made a very serious allegation to the police, that he had been kidnapped, which will always be investigated extremely thoroughly.

“Mr Woodward was prosecuted due to the amount of time invested in this investigation, which could have been put to better use investigating real crime,” he added. (ANI)

Oz police release images of gang bashing of Indian student

Melbourne, May 21 (ANI): Melbourne police have released images of a vicious gang bashing of an Indian-origin student in the latest attack of what is being dubbed “Indian hunting”.

The footage shows victim Sourabh Sharma, 21, being beaten after being asked for a cigarette by a group of thugs who descended on him as he travelled alone along Melbourne’s Werribee train line on May 9, the Herald Sun reports.

Transit safety division Detective Sen-Constable Craig Buttigieg said seven men aged between 15 and 20 boarded the train at Aircraft station, five of them soon approaching the lone student as he sat listening to the radio.

Moments later, after being refused a cigarrette, the attackers seem to enjoy the beating they hand out, although police still do not consider the attack racially motivated.

Detective Sergeant Constable Buttigieg said the thugs did abuse Sharma while they kicked him to the head and ribs although their primary motivation was robbery.

The youths took Sharma’s backpack, which contained 650 dollars for his tuition and rent, along with his mobile phone.

He is unable to attend his tertiary course and has no means to support himself in a share house he rents with six others.

Sharma was taken to the Mercy Hospital with a fractured cheek bone and had lost a tooth.

He also has significant swelling and bruising. (ANI)
