Premier League title in Chelsea’s hands: Ancelotti

London, Apr 26 (ANI): Buoyant after Chelsea’s 7-0 rout of Stoke at Stamford Bridge, coach Carlo Ancelotti has asked his players to forget Manchester United because it is all about them in the Premier League.

The win put the Blues back on top by a point and Ancelotti then claimed the rest of the campaign is all about his team.

“The most important thing now is that the title is in our hands. If we win two games, we are champions. I don’t have pressure now. Our destiny is in our hands, so now I am quiet and calm,” The Sun quoted Ancelotti, as saying.

United had knocked Chelsea off top spot by beating Spurs 3-1 on Saturday, a result which left Old Trafford boss Alex Ferguson claiming the pressure was all on Chelsea.

“I walked in the park yesterday while United played. Maybe Sir Alex Ferguson went to see a movie while we played? We don’t need to send a message to the other teams. This is a good message for us,” Ancelotti said.

“We needed a good reaction after the defeat at Tottenham last week and we did that,” he added.

Chelsea’s record win in the top flight also increased their superior goal difference over United to plus eight.

The Blues travel to Liverpool and host Wigan in their final two games, while United visit Sunderland and are at home to Stoke. (ANI)

Terry lost control after getting two yellow cards: Ancelotti

London, Apr 19 (ANI): Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has said that skipper John Terry lost control when he was sent off against the Spurs after receiving two yellow cards in the 2-1 defeat in which he also conceded a penalty for the first goal.

Terry was the subject of abuse from Spurs fans throughout the game and Ancelotti conceded his captain did not play well.

The Blues boss backed Terry to come back from the disappointment, and insisted he has had an outstanding season, The Sun reports.

“I was a player and you know sometimes you are not always rational, you sometimes lose your control. He has had a fantastic season. Maybe sometimes he had some problems and didn’t play so well, maybe against Spurs he didn’t play too well,” Ancelotti said.

The destiny of the title is still in Chelsea’s hands and Ancelotti admitted Spurs were the better team at the weekend, but is still confident of his team’s chances.

“Now we have to win the next game and if possible the next three games – then we are the champions. Tottenham played better than us, it can happen, but it’s a time to stay calm,” he said. (ANI)

Avalanche consolidate playoff spot with Sharks win

(Reuters) – The Colorado Avalanche scrapped to a 5-4 victory over the San Jose Sharks in overtime on Sunday to move into sole possession of the eighth, and final, playoff place in the Western Conference.

Sports

John-Michael Liles scored the game-winner at 2:59 in overtime to help the Avalanche snap a four-game losing streak. Colorado now have 91 points, two ahead of ninth-placed Calgary, with four matches remaining.

“It’s the biggest win of the year,” Avalanche coach Joe Sacco told reporters after Liles re-directed Ryan Wilson’s shot into the net for the winner.

“And then the next game will be the biggest for us.”

Colorado (42-29-7) trailed 2-0 in the first period but scored four unanswered goals beginning with Kyle Quincey’s wrist shot in the first, two second-period goals from Peter Mueller and a Paul Stastny power-play conversion just 20 seconds into the third.

Sharks winger Patrick Marleau notched his 43rd goal of the season to cut the deficit before Joe Pavelski tied the game for San Jose (48-20-11), who had their Western Conference lead cut to two points after the Chicago Blackhawks beat Calgary 4-1.

Dany Heatley assisted on both goals in the third for San Jose, who have lost two of three while trying to secure the top seed in the conference for the playoffs.

Team points leader Joe Thornton returned to the lineup from a lower body injury and added two assists while Douglas Murray and Jamie McGinn opened the scoring for the Sharks.

San Jose goaltender Evgeni Nabokov made 35 saves as Colorado out-shot the Sharks 40-22, but he could not hold off the determined Avalanche, who finished last in the West last season.

“All along we said we controlled our own destiny,” Liles said. “If we continue to win hockey games, then we’re going to put ourselves in (a) good position.”

Only a “Double” can ease Ancelotti’s Champions League pain

London, Mar. 20 (ANI): After a humiliating Champions League defeat, Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has challenged his players to win the double to ease his pain.

The Italian admits he slept for just two hours on Tuesday night after losing to Jose Mourinho”s Inter Milan.

“Everybody at the club is very disappointed to be out of the Champions League and now we have to shift our objectives. Now we have changed our aims and the chance to do the Double is a good motivation for everyone,” The Sun quoted Ancelotti, as saying.

“I”ve been told only six clubs have won the League and FA Cup Double in 140 years in England. It will not be easy but if we win our last 11 games we can achieve that. Our destiny is in our own hands,” he added.

Ancelotti reckons that his team is ready to perform at Blackburn following a training-ground pep talk from owner Roman Abramovich.

“The owner came to the training ground to speak with me and the players. What he said was a private issue but I can tell you that he came to support us and his presence was good,” he said.

“We are two points behind Manchester United at the top of the League with a game in hand and we are through to the FA Cup semi-finals.”

“Now we have 52 days of the season remaining and I have stressed to the players that we have to do our best for every one of them,” he added.

“We are still involved in two important competitions and it is important to have a good reaction after such a big disappointment, starting with the game at Blackburn.” (ANI)

Watermelon seller aiming to become Russia’s Obama

London, Aug 31 (ANI): Inspired by US President Barack Obama, an African-born watermelon seller wants to become the first black man to hold public office in Russia.

In fact, Joaquim Crima has also adopted a Russian patronymic, Vassily Ivanovich.

Crima, who has an Armenian wife, goes on his election campaign trail only after changing into his suit

“The destiny of this region concerns me deeply. Our life here is miserable. And my dream is to change it,” Sky News quoted him as saying.

The aspiring politician says that selling watermelons is not his true calling, as he has got his sights set far higher.

While the reaction on the campaign trail has been widely positive, he still plays it safe by being constantly flanked by his burly minder.

He is greeted with a smile from behind each door he knocks on, and he spends ample time with every family.

He has clearly made an impact in the Soviet nation, and is well liked and respected.

Most people in the southern Russian district of Srednyaya Akhtuba lack running water, heating and basic sanitation, but Crima has said that he can tackle that – if people let go of prejudice.

However, despite growing local support, authorities seem less than keen on his campaign.

“Some men came to me and offered me money if I get out of the race. They said I had no chance in this election. But I told them – why are you offering me money if you are so sure I will lose? I want the people to decide,” he said.

Crima has revealed that he has been inspired by Obama’s message of change.

And his election motto is “Yes we can!” (ANI)

The World Music Awards recognized them as the best-selling female group of all-time.

Jaswant Singh blames Nehru, Patel for partition on Pak television

Islamabad, Aug.28 (ANI): Expelled Bharatiya Janata Party leader Jaswant Singh has once again invited controversy by blaming India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru for the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947.

In an interview with the Dawn News, Singh blamed Pandit Nehru and Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel for the partition and creation of Pakistan.

Referring to Nehru’s Tryst with destiny speech, Singh said it was nothing short of double standard as Nehru himself talked of secularism while contributing to the country’s division along with Sardar Patel on grounds of so called ‘faith’.

Singh claimed that later Nehru had himself admitted of being responsible for the partition.

It is worth mentioning here that Jaswant Singh’s book ‘Jinnah: ndia-Partition-Independence’ which saw him being expelled from the BJP after serving it for nearly 30 years has received an overwhelming response in Pakistan.

Singh, in his book, has glorified Jinnah while blaming Sardar Patel for the country’s division in 1947.

The book quotes Singh as saying that Jinnah did not win Pakistan, rather Nehru and Patel conceded Pakistan to Jinnah with the help of the British.

Meanwhile, authorities have denied permission to Singh to visit Pakistan to launch his book. However, Singh’s son Manvendra Singh said his father has not applied for a visa, and as far as he knew.

He also rejected reports that there was a different Pakistan edition of the book. (ANI)

Jaswant was shabbily dismissed: Govindacharya

New Delhi, Aug.24 (ANI): Former Bharatiya Janata Party ideologue K N Govindacharya on Monday joined the bandwagon of critics over the Jaswant Singh dismissal issue.

“The manner in which Jaswant Singh was expelled does not behove of a political party… though no member is indispensable, the destiny of a party worker cannot be decided over a cup of tea,” Govindacharya told reporters.

He said the BJP should have asked its intellectual cell to study the book, set aside a week for this purpose, summoned Jaswant Singh for an explanation and only then removed him.

Govindacharya termed it as “summarily and shabbily” done expulsion and a “knee-jerk action taken in a hurry”.

He said it was the democratic right of an individual to write a book.

He said it was not clear whether Jaswant was expelled over his comments praising Pakistan founder M A Jinnah or for his views against Sardar Patel. (ANI)

Zawahiri asks Pakistanis to support insurgents against US ‘crusade’

Islamabad, July 15 (ANI): In an apparent bid to garner the support of people against the US,Al-Qaeda has asked Pakistani civilians to help insurgents in their battle against the US-led ‘crusade’.

In a video released by Qaeda’s second in command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, Pakistanis have been urged to support the fight against the US, which according to him, is threatening the ‘country’s existence’.

The video titled “My Muslim Brothers and Sisters in Pakistan” showed Zawahiri asking the youth of the nation to join the fight against the US.

Zawahiri said the US intervention in Pakistan’s military and politics could break up the nuclear-armed country.

“The American crusader manipulation of Pakistan’s destiny has reached such an extent that it now poses a grave danger to Pakistan’s future and very existence,” the eight minute video showed Zawahiri, as saying.

“It is evident that Pakistan is deeply involved in a fierce internal struggle between two forces- one representing ‘Islamic values’ and the other being the US-led ‘crusade’ to neutralize fighters threatening Western interests,” he said.

The video which has been dubbed in English language was posted several jihadist web forums on Tuesday, The Nation reports.

“If we stand by passively without offering due support to the mujahedeen, we shall not only contribute to the destruction of Pakistan and Afghanistan, but we shall also deserve the painful punishment of Almighty Allah,” Zawahiri added.

Zawahiri’s latest video comes nearly a year after he had announced a ‘jihad’ (holy war) against the South Asian nations in August 2008. (ANI)

JKNPP opposes court’s verdict on legalising homosexual relations

New Delhi, July 4 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) workers on Saturday held a demonstration in front of the Parliament in New Delhi, to protest against Delhi High Court’s verdict that legalises homosexuality.

Bhim Singh, Chief of JKNPP, said the judgement, which legalises consensual sex among people of the same gender, ignores the feelings of majority of Indians.

“Two judges cannot change my destiny, two judges cannot change my law, two judges cannot change the will of the people,” said Bhim Singh.

Singh said legalisation of homosexuality equates to ‘cultural invasion’ and is against the ethos of Indian culture.

“What kind of philosophy you are transcending to the Indian families? This is a cultural invasion of India, which shall not be tolerated. That’s why Panther’s Party is giving this symbolic protest,” he added. (ANI)

Challenging simple concepts can save planet Earth

Washington, May 30 (ANI): A democracy activist has said that challenging simple concepts can save planet Earth from demise.

In a speech at Ottawa’s Carleton University as part of the 78th Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, author and democracy activist Frances Moore Lappe called for a wholesale revamping of the way we view government, the economy and democracy.

“If we manage to do it, we can save ourselves from our own demise,” she said.

She said many people today are frightened by the potential for disaster, ecological and otherwise, and fearful that nothing can be done to prevent it.

But, according to Lappe, we can do something – if we challenge five assumptions about the way the world works.

The first is that going green means “powering down,” or reducing our consumption of energy.

Lappe said all we have to do is stop getting energy from fossil fuels and start getting it from renewable sources like the sun.

“Every day the sun supplies us with 15,000 times the amount of energy we’re now using in fossil fuels,” she said.

“If everyone had a solar panel or windmill on their roof, we wouldn’t be dependent on oil companies – and as individuals, we’d feel more in control of our own destiny,” she added.

“The second idea to dispense with is that going green means an end to economic growth. What we have to do is change our idea of what growth is,” she said.

“There’s plenty of room for growth, she says, if we learn to do things more efficiently,” she added.

The third idea Lappe wants to challenge is the notion that humans are by nature greedy, self-centred and materialistic.

“Under certain conditions, we can be monsters. But, there wouldn’t be 6.8 billion of us on the planet today if we didn’t also have positive qualities such as empathy, cooperation and fairness,” she said.

The fourth idea she disputes is that we dislike rules.

She said that humans crave structure, particularly rules that make sense to us as individuals and which foster a sense of inclusion.

The final concept she wants to challenge is the idea that our problems are so pressing there’s no time for democracy, and only an authoritarian regime can save us.

She believes the only hope for the planet is to trust in people and set rules that bring out the best in us. (ANI)

Varun for reviving Sanjay Gandhi’s controversial sterilization policy

London, May 9 (ANI): Fire-brand BJP leader Varun Gandhi wants to revive his late father Sanjay Gandhi’s controversial sterilization policy, and thinks compulsory military training can fight communalism.

In an interview to the UK-based Daily Telegraph, Varun said he hoped to follow in his father’s footsteps by offering strong leadership which India has lacked for 20 years.

Claiming that politics was his destiny, the BJP candidate from Pilibhit said, “Anyone who says they have no ambition to achieve power at some stage is lying.”

Besides reviving the sterilisation policy, Varun said he would also propose a bill in Parliament to introduce compulsory military service for all Indians so that Indians can “unite the country and overcome caste and religious differences”.

“Instead of people thinking of themselves as Tamils or Brahmins, they should think of themselves as Indians,” the Daily Telegraph quoted him, as saying.

Varun denied making threatening remarks against Muslims, but he admitted that he vowed to protect local people from “anti-social” elements after three local girls were reportedly gang-raped.

In late 1970s, Varun’s father, Sanjay Gandhi, had initiated a sterilization program whereby police and government officials were asked to forcibly perform vasectomies on men and also sterilize women.

Most cases were reported from the Muslim-dominated Turkman gate area of Delhi.

Under this program, which was made a part of the government’s family planning initiative and was supposed to target only men with two children, several unmarried men were sterilized to meet government targets. (ANI)

Wenger believes Champions League trophy is in his club’s destiny

London, Apr. 29 (ANI): Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal will at last be crowned the football kings of Europe.
“This is the moment we have all been waiting for. There is a big gap in the history of this club and we are determined to wipe that out. That is why we are here. I am an optimist and I believe that we will win the Champions League – the sooner the better,” The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.

“People love success and, the more you win, the more you have fans who love the club. The size of the club is determined by the number of people who support you. And every title makes you bigger,” he added.

Wenger, 59, has led Arsenal through 11 successive Champions League campaigns and took them all the way to the 2006 final, when they lost 2-1 to Barcelona.

And he insists his desire to finally lift the trophy is intensified by the desperation of the supporters to be the best in Europe. (ANI)

Aliens do exist but US govt hides the truth, says ex-astronaut

London, April 22 (ANI): There is extraterrestrial life and it is being concealed by the United States government, claims ex-NASA astronaut Edgar Mitchell.itchell made the claims at the fifth annual X-Conference – a meeting of those who believe in UFOs and other life forms.

Mitchell, who was part of the 1971 Apollo 14 moon mission, said that alien life does exist but the truth is being covered up by the U.S. govt.

The 78-year-old also said that he had tried investigating the 1947 ‘Roswell Incident’, which some believe was the crash-landing of a UFO, but had been thwarted by military authorities. We’re not alone. Our destiny, in my opinion, and we might as well get started with it, is [to] become a part of the planetary community. … We should be ready to reach out beyond our planet and beyond our solar system to find out what is really going on out there,” the Telegraph quoted Mitchell as saying.

“I urge those who are doubtful: Read the books, read the lore, start to understand what has really been going on. Because there really is no doubt we are being visited. The universe that we live in is much more wondrous, exciting, complex and far-reaching than we were ever able to know up to this point in time,” Mitchell added.

A rep for NASA told CNN: “NASA does not track UFOs. NASA is not involved in any sort of cover-up about alien life on this planet or anywhere else – period.” (ANI)
