Bulk of MF Global London fuel oil team quit -industry sources

July 22 (Reuters) – Futures broker MF Global Holdings (MF.N) has lost eight brokers from their nine-man London fuel oil swaps broking desk, two industry sources said on Thursday.

The eight brokers resigned earlier this month, and are currently serving out their “garden leave”, an industry source told Reuters.

The remaining member of the team will be leaving soon, the sources added. A spokeswoman for the company in London declined comment on the departures.

“We can only confirm that the London fuel oil desk is still operating,” she said when asked if MF Global will close its fuel oil desk in London. (Editing by Ramthan Hussain)

UPDATE 1-Gates sees potential in Iran economic sanctions

June 20 (Reuters) – U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Sunday that targeted economic sanctions on Iran had “real potential” to pressure Tehran to halt its nuclear program.

“Targeted economic pressures has real potential,” Gates told the Fox News Sunday program when asked if he saw any signs that Iran’s resolve to push ahead with its nuclear program was weakening in the face of international sanctions.

“I think there is a reasonable chance of getting the Iranian regime to finally come to their senses and realize that their security is probably more in danger by going forward,” Gates said.

He added, however, that all options, including a military strike, were still on the table in dealing with Tehran on the nuclear issue. (Writing by Paul Simao, Americas Desk, Editing by Sandra Maler)

First rural BPO in Chennai”s Krishnagiri District boosts employment

Krishnagiri (Chennai), May 20 (ANI): The first government-run rural BPO in Chennai”s Krishnagiri District is proving to be a boon for youths wanting jobs.

At present over one hundred rural youth, both male and female, in the age group of 18 to 35 years are employed at Fostering Technologies in Rural Area (FOSTeRA), the BPO established in year 2007 by District of Rural Development Agency (DRDA).

The employees here earn a monthly salary of Rs 5000 to Rs 8,000.

“The objective is to take IT to rural areas and to provide employment and also create entrepreneurship. The rural BPO provides employment for local people in the age group of 18 to 35, with the qualification of plus two, graduate and above,” said Ashok Kumar, CEO, FOSTeRA.

The nature of the job is voice process and non-voice process. About 300 young people have already been put through voice and non-voice training.

“Here it is night as well as day shift. I have got job to work in day shift. The call center has hired many rural people,” said Anjana, an employee.

FOSTeRA Krishnagiri, is planning to increase its capacity from the present 25 to about 500 by the end of October, and after that it will employee around 1000 people working in two shifts.

Multi-national companies like telecom and banking are looking at FOSTeRA to outsource their help desk, credit card processing, form filling and editing work. (ANI)

Boffins develop ”The Kug”: a kettle and a mug!

London, May 12 (ANI): A mug which doubles as a kettle and features a heating element that can boil water in just 90 seconds to make a cup of tea or coffee has been developed.

Kug is the brainchild of Ben Millett, 21, and Alan Harrison, 22, who came up with it for a design project at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.

The pair had been tasked with creating a product to help people with rheumatoid arthritis when they created the Kug.

“As part of our research we met people with the condition to talk to them about what kind of problems they encountered on a day-to-day basis,” the Telegraph quoted Millett as saying.

“And when we stopped for lunch we noticed some of the ladies trying to pour a cup of tea. After chatting to them we found out how difficult it was for them to lift a kettle that”s how it all started.

“We looked at the whole process of making a hot drink – from the kettle to putting a tea bag in a cup and filling it with water. And after lots of concepts we ended up with this idea.

“It meant one less object people would have to deal with and it wouldn”t be such a strain on the wrists, hands and fingers,” Millett added.

The design even won the Arthritis Ireland Easy to Use Design Award.

The Kug, similar in size to a travel mug, is made up of two cups.

The outer cup contains the heating filament and is plugged into a base, which is powered through mains electricity.

The inner cup, which contains the liquid, can be removed and washed after every use.

Millett said: “It works just like an ordinary kettle.

“When the water”s boiled you just take the cup off the base and enjoy your drink. You can also adjust the temperate on the base so it keeps the liquid warm until you”re ready.

He added: “It”s energy efficient and saves water because you only put the amount you actually need into the cup. It”s also portable so you can have it at home or take it in the car with you and have it on your desk at work. And it”s much lighter than a kettle.” (ANI)

Abbott ‘still high’ after ironman exertions

An exhausted Tony Abbott is still “on a high” after taking almost 14 hours to complete a gruelling ironman triathlon yesterday.

Mr Abbott finished the 3.8-kilometre swim, 180km cycle and 42km marathon within 14 hours, crossing the finish line at Port Macquarie in New South Wales around 9:00pm AEDT.

Today he told 2GB radio that running across the finish line, albeit at the back of the 1,500-strong pack, made the pain worthwhile.

“I’m still on a bit of a high to be honest,” he said. “It’s a terrific thing to do.”

After suffering from a small panic attack in the swim leg, Mr Abbott then had to face a “howling” headwind once he jumped on his bike.

Thinking of holidays in Port Macquarie with his children kept him going, Mr Abbott said.

He has now been checked over by doctors who say he is doing well.

“They thought to finish the thing and basically be still upright and still compos mentis was pretty good,” he said.

Mr Abbott has copped some flak from the Government for spending too much time exercising instead of working.

But he says the most effective workers “have a life”.

“If you’re chained to the desk eventually you go very, very stale,” he said.

Sasha snapped spying ‘Kennedy-style’ on Obama at Oval Office!

London, Sep 3 (ANI): US President Barack Obama and his daughter Sasha have been captured on camera in what is said to be an unusual yet oddly familiar pose at the Oval Office in the White House.

The picture, taken by White House photographer Peter Souza, whose brief is to document the Obama presidency, shows eight-year-old Sasha spying on her father from behind a sofa, as he looks through his papers, reports the Telegraph.

But despite the picture giving a spontaneous feel, it also evoked comparisons with famous pictures of a three-year-old John F Kennedy Jr playing under the same desk as his father sat working at it.

The photographs were taken a month before President Kennedy’s assassination in November 1963.

The boy would often play under the desk, which had been presented by Queen Victoria to President Rutherford Hayes, and liked to pretend that its kneehole panel was a secret door. (ANI)

‘Teen-proof’ room cuts out the clutter

London, Aug 24 (ANI): The days of teenagers’ messy bedrooms may finally be over, courtesy an Edinburgh-based company, which has designed a room they can’t ruin.

Design firm IDP claims to have created the ‘teen-proof’ bedroom, which provides solution for the cluttered spaces that have enraged parents for decades, reports the Scotsman.

It features drawing pin friendly fabric wallpaper; a wipe-clean desk; a swivel chair with secret pockets for stashing chocolate and electronic gizmos; stain-resistant carpets; and enough space under the bed to hide a mountain of clothes and computer games and still leave room for a set of iPod speakers.

Gilly Corkery of IDP said: “It was an incredibly challenging project. How do you counteract the natural messiness of teenagers?”

The room includes shelves tailored to the size of CDs, along with compartments in the bed space so that electronic equipment such as stereos or PlayStations can be plugged in – great for easy access when the teens are still lounging in bed at noon.

The room will be exhibited at the Homes and Interiors Scotland Exhibition at the SECC in Glasgow next weekend.

The design firm is keeping some details a closely guarded secret – just releasing a rough sketch of a suspiciously tidy-looking room and a sample of some dog-themed furniture decor.

Corkery, who modelled the design on the taste and habits of her son Jamie, 12, said: “We’ve tried to do little quirky things that teenagers will think are quite cool,” says

“No self-respecting teenager wants to move for too long so we’ve designed a desk chair which has a pocket where they can keep a remote control, their iPod, pens, chocolate or whatever, without having to move.

“Then there’s the upholstery fabric on the walls, which means they can put posters up with drawing pins without leaving a mark,” Corkery added. (ANI)

Clinton meets Obama, discusses release of two American journalists

Washington, Aug.19 (ANI): Former U.S. President Bill Clinton went to the White House on Tuesday and briefed incumbent Barack Obama and his top aides about his recent trip to North Korea, which resulted in the release of two American women journalists-Laura Ling and Euna Lee.

According to the New York Times, the 40-minute session took place in the White House Situation Room. Before the meeting, Clinton spoke to the president by phone and briefed his national security adviser, Gen. James L. Jones.

The paper said that the meeting was rich in symbolism. The president invited Clinton to the Oval Office to talk further.

The White House said little about what the men discussed, beyond noting that Obama had wanted to thank Clinton for winning the release of Ling and Lee.

The paper also revealed that Clinton’s visit to North Korea would not have materialized had not been for the role played by veteran North Korean hand and intelligence officer, Joseph R. DeTrani.

DeTrani is the government’s senior officer responsible for collecting and analyzing intelligence on North Korea. His efforts to pave the way for Clinton’s visit offer a glimpse into how the administration was forced to use unorthodox methods to overcome the lack of formal communications between Washington and Pyongyang.

The visit was arranged under a veil of secrecy with the help of De Trani, who has spent much of his career trying to unlock the mysteries of North Korea.

His role in the whole episode allowed Clinton to land in Pyongyang on August 4 to win the release of two imprisoned American journalists.

Clinton was determined not to extend a public-relations coup to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il, who feted him over a long dinner that night, even proposing to stay up afterward.Kim was flanked by two longtime aides – a surprise to Americans who had suspected that both men had been pushed aside – and he gave no hint that North Korea was in the throes of a succession struggle, despite the widespread questions over how long he might live.

Kim expressed a desire for better relations with the United States. De Traini and John Podesta, a trusted adviser to him and Obama, assisted Clinton.

The details about Mr. Clinton’s visit came from interviews with multiple government officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Before taking the job of North Korea mission manager in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in 2006, DeTrani served in the State Department as the special envoy to the six-party talks with North Korea, holding the rank of ambassador.

In that job, he got to know key North Korean officials, including Kim Kye-gwan, the chief nuclear negotiator, who greeted Clinton. DeTrani also worked with David Straub, a former head of the State Department’s Korea desk, who was a member of Clinton’s delegation.

More than anything else, Clinton’s visit served to clear up some of the shadows surrounding Kim Jong-il’s health.

The former American president did not engage in a substantive discussion about North Korea’s nuclear program. Nor did the North Korean leader give Clinton any indication that his nation would relinquish its nuclear ambitions – a condition the United States has set for resuming negotiations, officials said. Brits reported record 231 UFO sightings in 2009

London, July 13 (ANI): Britons have reported a record 231 UFO sightings to the Ministry of Defence since January.

The figures have put 2009 as the record year on the list for spotting mysterious hovering objects.

The previous record was of 285 sightings for the whole of 2008, while in 2007 the count was 135, and there were just 97 in 2006.

“This is sensational. We are now on target for a record year,” British tabloid The Sun quoted former MoD UFO investigator Nick Pope as saying.

He added: “I thought the number of UFOs reported last year was high, but we now know that they are being seen in increasing numbers.”

Pope, who worked on the MoD’s UFO desk for three years, said that the increase in reports was due to it being easier to snap “proof”.

He said: “Most people have a mobile which can take pictures or film. Before, people feared being ridiculed.”

The MoD began releasing statistics on sightings of flying saucers dating back to 1998 in 2007 under Freedom of Information laws. (ANI)

Madonna holds daily Kabbalah sessions with kids

London, July 12 (ANI): Queen of Pop Madonna is said to be holding daily Kabbalah sessions with her kids.

Madge, 50, asks her children how they have been behaving, and then weighs up all the evidence before dishing out her own form of “judgements”.

Based on a doctrine called Spirituality for Kids, devised by her pal Karen Berg, it’s meant to instil discipline into the home.

“Madonna firmly believes children are answerable for their behaviour and everyday actions,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“David Banda and Mercy, guided by Lourdes or Madonna, stand about a desk in her office, discussing what they did during the day, and whether they’ve been good or bad.

“Madonna, acting as judge, gives her feedback and if the youngsters lose their tempers, they have to pause, and suggest better ways they could have behaved.

“Madonna is basically trying to establish a code of behaviour in the house according to Kabbalah principles.

“She wants the children to think about Kabbalah throughout the day – not just at the family court. It’s a real hit with the kids – they actually enjoy it.

“It’s based on the principle that if you do good deeds, good things will come to you, and if you do bad things then bad things will happen,” the source added. (ANI)

Indian girl, 15, is world’s smallest teenager at 2ft tall – Video News

Jyoti, who is half the size of her two-year-old nephew, is treated as a celebrity in her home town of Nagpur.

She weights 12lbs – only 9lbs more than her weight at birth – and stands 1ft 11ins tall.

Jyoti, who is set to feature on Channel 4′s Bodyshock programme on June 11, dreams of becoming an actress and is believed by many to be the reincarnation of a goddess.

“When I tell people my age they don’t believe me,” she said, “When I was three I realised that I was different to the rest of the kids.

“I thought that everyone was bigger and I should get bigger too.”

She has her own mini grey uniform and school bag and even a tiny desk. But she looks like a doll next to her teenage classmates.

“I am proud of being the smallest girl. I love all the attention I get,” she said. “I’m not scared of being small, and I don’t regret being small.

“I am sure there are many people in this world who are dwarves like me. I’m just the same as other people. I eat like you, dream like you. I don’t feel any different.”

Jyoti insists on living as normal a life as possible including going to the local school.

“I used to get stressed and couldn’t go out much but now I like going out and speaking to people,” she said, “When I first went to school everyone was so big I used to get scared but I’m okay now, I like it. I have a different desk and chair that were made for me. I’m a normal student.

“I would like to be an actress when I grow up. My dream is to do films. Amge has already had a taste of fame in a pop video for Indian star Mika Singh.”

Doctors believe Jyoti is a pituitary dwarf but have never been able to pinpoint her condition.

Bruce Willis invents ‘concussion buster’

London, May 08 (ANI): Bruce Willis has created a device to avoid head injuries on the set of his action films – a helmet made of rubber bands he calls his ‘concussion buster’.

During an interview with talk show host David Letterman, the 54-year-old Die Hard star banged and bounced his head on the desk to prove how well the device works.

“I’m feeling a little clumsy lately. A little clumsy around the house and clumsy on the sets. You know, you get a little kicked in the head sometimes, banged around,” the Daily Star quoted him as saying.

“I’m getting a little older so I was fooling around the house and I get one of those little rubber band balls. This protects my head. I like to call it Bruce Willis’ concussion buster,” he added. (ANI)

Kiefer Sutherland to surrender to NYPD to avoid jail time

New York, May 07 (ANI): Canadian actor Kiefer Sutherland is expected to surrender to New York Police to answer the complaint involving fashion designer Jack McCollough and actor Brooke Shields.

Sutherland landed in legal trouble after he allegedly assaulted McCollough at an early morning party in New York City.

Sources say that the actor will be charged with third-degree assault for the attack when he surrenders.

The actor will be issued a desk appearance ticket for the misdemeanour, which means that he won’t be jailed and will be free to travel before he’s arraigned.

“When the lawyer realized paparazzi could be sitting on his [Sutherland's] doorstep for two to three weeks, suddenly he wanted to come in right away and make it all go away,” the New York Daily News quoted a police source as saying.

A pal told The News that Sutherland felt bad about the bizarre display.

“Kiefer is sorry it happened. Absolutely. It’s terribly regrettable,” the friend said.

The pal also said that Sutherland lashed out inside because McCollough bumped into actress Shields and didn’t apologize.

“Kiefer was provoked,” the pal said. (ANI)

Forensic artist re-constructs face of first European

London, May 4 (ANI): A forensic artist has reconstructed the face of the first anatomically-modern human to live in Europe, who inhabited the ancient forests of the Carpathian Mountains in what is now Romania about 35,000 years ago.

According to a report in The Independent, the reconstruction by forensic artist Richard Neave, of a face that could be male or female, is based on the partial skull and jawbone found in a cave where bears were known to hibernate.

The facial features indicate the close affinity of these early Europeans to their immediate African ancestors, although it was still not possible to determine the person’s sex.

Neave based his assessment on a careful measurement of the bone fragments and his long experience of how the soft tissues of the face are built around the bones of the skull.

The reconstruction was made for the forthcoming BBC 2 series “The Incredible Human Journey”, which documents human origins and evolution, from our birthplace in Africa to the long migratory routes that led us to populate the most distant parts of the globe.

It is impossible from the bones to determine the skin colour of the individual, although scientists speculate it was probably darker than modern-day Europeans, reflecting a more recent African origin.

Neave’s clay head of the “first modern European” now sits on the desk of Alice Roberts, the Bristol University anthropologist who will introduce the BBC series.

“It’s really quite bizarre. I’m a scientist and objective, but I look at that face and think ‘Gosh, I’m actually looking at the face of somebody from 40,000 years ago’, and there’s something weirdly moving about that,” said Dr Roberts.

“Richard creates skulls of much more recent humans and he’s used to looking at differences between populations. He said the skull doesn’t actually look European, or Asian, or African. It looks like a mixture of all of them. And you think, well, that’s probably what you’d expect of someone who was among the earliest populations to come to Europe.” she added.

According to Erik Trinkaus, professor of anthropology at Washington University in Missouri, and one of the first specialists to study the bones in detail, the jaw was the oldest, directly-dated modern human fossil.

“Taken together, the material is the first that securely documents what modern humans looked like when they spread into Europe,” he said. (ANI)

Bangladesh to screen passengers at airports for swine flu

Dhaka – Bangladesh on Monday opened a desk at the country’s main airport to screen visitors coming from countries affected by swine flu as part of its effort to prevent spread of the influenza, officials said. “The incoming passengers have been asked to fill out a self-declaration form on arrival and advised to appear before the desk if they feel fever,” Mahmudur Rahman, the director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research, said after an emergency meeting, which reviewed the country’s preparations against the influenza threat.

If anyone is detected with the virus at the airport, he or she will be immediately taken to hospitals treating influenza, he said.

Teams comprising medical officers, epidemiologists, representative from World Health Organisation and the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research will work at the airports and seaports to check such cases, Health Ministry officials said.

Airport staff dealing with immigration, customs and cargo handling were asked to wear masks during their duty hours.

Influenza screening will also be in place at the sea ports within a week, said Mahmud, adding that the travellers’ screening would continue until a solution is found to the threat.

Responding to the outbreak of the swine influenza (H1N1) mainly in Mexico and the United States, the Bangladesh government asked its scientists to be prepared to tackle the threat.

“It is a global crisis and the country has to respond as per the International Health Regulations and follow the World Health Organisation’s instructions,” director general of the Health Directorate Shah Munir Hossain said. (dpa)
