Indian shares choppy; Reliance, DLF drop

MUMBAI, July 29 (Reuters) – Indian shares were trading 0.2
percent lower on Thursday ahead of the expiry of monthly
derivatives contracts and subdued cues from Asian markets.

Energy major Reliance Industries (RELI.BO) dropped 0.5
percent after sliding 3.1 percent in the previous session, and
traders said they were cautious of the near-term trend.

“A lot of short positions are being rolled over in Reliance
Industries, indicating a bearish outlook,” said Kunal Sukhani,
manager of institutional equities at Asian Markets Securities.

The stock, which has the heaviest weight on the main BSE
index .BSESN, has come under pressure following a delay in
the company’s plan to reach full gas output from its field off
India’s east coast.

The oil secretary said late on Wednesday Reliance would be
able to pump natural gas at full capacity from its deep-sea
field during the year to March 2013, indicating a delay of
almost two years. [ID:nSGE66R0KK]

By 11:09 a.m. (0539 GMT), the 30-share BSE index was
trading down 0.2 percent at 17,921.28 points, with 19 of its
components declining.

“Market is volatile because of derivatives expiry,” said
Sukhani, referring to the monthly contracts on the National
Stock Exchange.

DLF (DLF.BO) dropped 1.4 percent after the largest listed
property developer’s 3.8 percent rise in quarterly profit
failed to cheer investors. [ID:nBMA008118]

Param Desai, a research analyst with Angel Broking, said
the profit was tad below expectation as interest and
depreciation costs weighed.

Financials were mixed as near-term monetary tightening
fears weighed, but the demand for loan outlook was seen higher
on the back of robust economic growth.

A Reuters poll showed the central bank was likely to raise
rates more aggressively in the rest of the fiscal year, after
tightening policy more than expected on Tuesday.
[ID:nBMA008098]

Top lender State Bank of India (SBI.BO) dropped 1.2 percent
while rivals ICICI Bank (ICBK.BO) and HDFC Bank (HDBK.BO) were
up 0.1 percent and 0.2 percent respectively.

Foreign funds have invested $9.2 billion in Indian equities
so far this year and has helped the benchmark index gain 2.6
percent in the period.

In the broader market, gainers and losers were almost equal
in number on volume of 113 million shares.

The 50-share NSE index .NSEI was down 0.2 percent at
5,387.25.

Elsewhere, the MSCI’s measure of Asian markets other than
Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS was barely changed while Japan’s Nikkei
.N225 was down 0.7 percent.

UK’s Osborne says no deal with BOE’s King on low rates

Fitch says Japan fiscal consolidation harder now

July 13 (Reuters) – Japan’s ruling party’s poor showing at Sunday’s elections will make it more difficult for the country to push through fiscal consolidation and a delay in a credible plan beyond the year-end would increase the risk of a rating downgrade, Fitch ratings said on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s ruling coalition suffered a major blow in Sunday’s upper house election, putting his policies to deal with the country’s massive debt at risk. [ID:nTOE66B066]

“If we don’t see a credible plan come through by the end of the year, it will send a negative signal for its rating, adding pressure to the credit rating,” Andrew Colquhoun, Fitch’s sovereign analyst for Japan, told Reuters.

However, Colquhoun said he was not pessimistic about the government’s ability to draw up such a plan.

“The election will make it more difficult for the government to draw up and implement such a plan, but I am not too pessimistic as I do not read the election results as a rejection of fiscal consolidation,” he said.

Fitch has rated Japan’s foreign currency debt AA and its local currency debt at AA-minus, both with a stable outlook. (Reporting by Umesh Desai; Editing by Jacqueline Wong)

Dollar falls to one-month low vs yen

June 24 (Reuters) – The dollar fell to a one-month low against the yen on Thursday as the greenback stayed pressured by the U.S. central bank’s pledge to keep rates low for some time. The dollar fell to 89.63 yen JPY=, its lowest since late May.

“Price action in the likes of dollar/yen remains poor, my order board suggests some more weakness to come in dollar/yen with an initial target 89.10 yen,” one London-based spot trader said. (Reporting by Neal Armstrong and Tamawa Desai)

Kasab files appeal in Bombay High Court against death sentence

Mumbai, June 4 (ANI): Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone surviving Pakistani gunman, who was sentenced to death for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, has filed an appeal in the Bombay High Court challenging the verdict and sought a legal aid panel to fight his case.

It has been reported that Kasab filed the appeal through the jail authorities and his plea for a lawyer has been forwarded to the High Court Legal Services Committee (HCLSC).

The HCLSC would now present Kasab”s plea for a lawyer before Acting Chief Justice J N Patel, who is patron in chief of Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority and senior Judge and Chairperson of HCLSC, Justice Ranjana Desai.

Earlier on May 6, Kasab”s defence lawyer K. P. Pawar said the decision about appealing to the High Court against the death sentence would be taken after consultations with the convict.
A Mumbai Special Court on May 6 sentenced Kasab to death on four counts.

Judge M L Tahiliyani awarded death sentence for Kasab on-waging war against India, murder, conspiracy to murder, and participating in an act of terror under Unlawful Activity Prevention Act (UAPA).

Judge Tahaliyani felt that Kasab”s crime fell under the judicial definition of ”rarest of rare”.

Kasab, who is the 52nd prisoner on death row in India, was also awarded life term on five other counts. (ANI)

Train indicators must have Marathi: Shiv Sena

Mumbai, May 29 — The Shiv Sena has threatened to vandalise railway stations in Mumbai, if train indicators do not display information in Marathi. The Central Railway has assured the Sena that it will work on a solution to introduce indicators in the local language soon.

On Wednesday, a delegation led by Sena leader Anil Desai met CR officials at Mumbai CST, requesting them to make the change. “Marathi should be added to the existing indicator system.

We have warned the railway administration that if they do not do so, the Shiv Sena will start a campaign,” Desai said. “There are lakhs of commuters from rural areas, who come to Mumbai and other places and Marathi is the only language they know,” he said.

Sena sources said the delegation had aimed to meet the divisional manager but could only get an audience with another official. “We spoke to the manager on the phone, and also to the company that maintains and operates indicators at the station.

We were assured that Marathi will soon be incorporated,” a Sena leader said. Railway officials said they have introduced a three-language formula wherever possible, and certain practical problems such as space constraints and technical issues need to be sorted out.

Desai said CR has intentionally ignored the Marathi language despite general recommendations that signs at government and semi-government offices in Maharashtra include all three languages, English, Hindi and Marathi. The Shiv Sena and the MNS have been involved in a battle of one-upmanship to woo the Marathi manoos.

MyLikes Secures $630K in Seed Funding

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, Apr 14 (MARKET WIRE) —
Word of mouth advertising platform MyLikes (www.mylikes.com) announced
that it has secured $630K in seed funding. The funds will be used to fuel
the expansion of the company’s product and mission to make social media
advertising and marketing more personal, relevant, and conversational.

The round was over-subscribed and restricted to 11 ex-Googlers who were
former colleagues of MyLikes founders, Bindu Reddy and Arvind
Sundararajan. Reddy was the former head of product management for Google
Apps and Sundararajan was former tech lead for Google’s AdSense.

Investors in the round included Paul Buchheit and Sanjeev Singh, founders
of Gmail and FriendFeed and who are currently at Facebook; Georges Harik,
early Google director; Dipchand Nishar, ex-Google director and current VP
of Products at LinkedIn; Keval Desai, VP of Digg; Aydin Senkut from
Felicity Ventures; XG Ventures; David Hirsch from Metamorphic Ventures;
and active ex-Google angel investors Richard Chen, Thomas Korte and David
Scacco.

The company also announced that influential bloggers Robert Scoble
(http://scobleizer.com) and Louis Gray (http://blog.louisgray.com) have
joined the MyLikes Advisory Board. As strategic advisors, both Scoble and
Gray can provide valuable insight on how to effectively recruit
influencers on the web, as well as how to fine tune the MyLikes platform
to meet the needs of today’s blogger. Gokul Rajaram, founder of ChaiLabs
and the “Godfather of AdSense”
(http://www.crunchbase.com/person/gokul-rajaram), is also joining the
advisory board to provide feedback and guidance on the advertising model.

MyLikes publicly launched in January 2010 and already boasts an
impressive community of more than 60,000 social media influencers, as
well as more than 170 advertisers. Prior to this funding round, MyLikes
had been funded by Reddy and Sundararajan.

MyLikes is changing the way brand and discovery advertising is done on
social media and throughout the web by letting influencers choose and
write endorsements in their own voice. Bloggers, Twitterers, and other
social media publishers select the brands and products they genuinely
like (and will be helpful to their audience), and then promote their
‘Like’ by posting it to Twitter or their website. Influencers earn money
for themselves or their preferred charity with every click.

By hand-picking the ads that will best fit the interests of their
followers and readers, publishers protect their integrity and
relationship with their readers, as well as increase the chances that ads
will get clicked. It’s a win-win-win situation for all involved:
advertisers get more clicks, publishers earn more money, and readers
discover relevant brands and information from their favorite social media
personalities.

Malaysia emerging as ‘uniquely attractive destination’ for Indian tourists: TCI

Berlin, Mar. 24 (ANI): India’s top outbound tour operator Travel Corporation of India (TCI) has described Malaysia as a “uniquely attractive destination.”

The Star Online quoted TCI’s Mumbai-based director Rakshit Desai, as saying that his company offers tour packages to European and Southeast Asian destinations and “Malaysia is a very popular destination for Indian tourists.”

“Indeed, it is a central component of our Southeast Asia outbound programme and we have organised thousands of trips to Malaysia so far. Indeed, the Malaysian market has a good outlook and is generally perceived as very strong,” he said in Berlin, where the world’s largest tourism fair – International Tourism Bourse (ITB) – has just concluded.

Rakshit pointed out that Malaysia’s strength, compared to other destinations in Southeast Asia, lies in easy accessibility, affordability and an enchanting landscape.

“Langkawi is ideal for newly married couples who enjoy the calm and beauty of Langkawi beaches. The island is very popular among Indian tourists because of the quality of its hotels… these are outstanding properties. “

Genting has been another traditionally popular resort among Indian tourists,” he observed.

He, however, said that he would like to see Malaysia’s visa system liberalised for Indian passport holders.

Unlike Singapore and a number of other Asian countries, Malaysia does not provide Indian passport holders the “Visa on Arrival” (VOA) facility. (ANI)

Life goes on as usual in Mumbai, six months after 26/11

Life goes on as usual in Mumbai, six months after 26/11Mumbai, May 26 (IANS) There were no protest marches or candles lit, no condemning banners or posters, and no human chains either. Exactly six months after 10 terrorists ripped the spirit of Mumbai, the citizens seem to have forgotten the terror attacks and consider it as a nightmare that has ended.

The city is back to its usual, familiar self. People taking life as it comes, the unending daily grind for sheer survival going on among the have-nots while the affluent are busy with their high-flying lifestyles.

“Mumbaikars want only peace, non-interference in their routine lives, because that’s the only way the city thrives. There have been so many terror attacks in the past two decades, but Mumbai has learnt to survive with or without them,” observed astrologer-cum-columnist of Borivli, Milan Thakar.

According to Thakar, Mumbaikars are such a tough and hardened community that nothing – terror attacks, floods or riots – can shake them.

Similar sentiments were expressed by a Vile Parle housewife, Mruga P. Desai, who pointed out that apart from the initial shock, Mumbai was practically on its feet within 24 hours.

“It is now six months down the line. We have to accept that Mumbai is being targeted by all and sundry. There is little point in blaming anybody or mourning over it forever,” she said, packing her bags for a family trip to the Far East.

A bitter comment came today from Kavita, the wife of Hemant Karkare, the chief of the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) who was killed in the terror strike. Speaking to some television channels, Kavita said that nothing has really changed after 26/11 – the police continue to wait for sophisticated weapons and equipment promised to them as part of a Rs.1 billion upgradation programme.

“It has become a fashion to announce compensation for the fallen heroes after such incidents. If the police had been better equipped, such incidents would not occur,” she observed.

Fourteen of Mumbai’s police personnel, including some of the finest ones like Karkare, Additional Police Commissioner Ashok Kamte and encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar, among others, lost their lives in the 26/11 attack.

A senior police official, requesting anonymity, told IANS that proposals to modernise the police weapons and equipment are currently “underway”. He explained that there were delays due to the change of guard in the state and the general elections that followed soon after.

However, many public and private hospitals have gone ahead to implement basic security measures like installing metal detectors and closed circuit television cameras.

Even the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has installed CCTVs at important locations around the city, including some sensitive roads and junctions.

Similarly, luxury hotels have put in place additional security measures, including screening of guests’ baggage and deployed more security personnel.

Metal detectors and CCTVs are now a common feature at important railway stations on the entire suburban network, as also Mumbai airport and other sensitive locations.

However, for the ordinary citizen, barring the occasional road blocks and going through enhanced security measures, little has changed after 26/11.

Gujarat has a new health scheme for poor

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) May 25 (ANI): In a unique initiative aimed at making health care benefits available to the masses, Shri Krishna hospital in Ahmedabad has launched Krupa Arogya Suraksha (KAS), a social security scheme, wherein a poor family can get insurance cover by paying a minimum fee of Rs. 90 or 9 kilograms of food grains.

The insurance cover will be for Rs. 5000.

Under the scheme the hospital accepts food grains instead of money from people who belong to the special categories like landless labourers, farmers and other deprived section of the society.

” We believe, a scheme such as the one we have, where you pay seven or eight kilograms of rice or wheat can be a good way to cover themselves through our scheme,” said Sandeep Desai, CEO, H.M Patel Center for Medical care managed by Charotar Arogya Mandal.

The medical benefits under the KAS scheme may be opted at the Shri Krishna Hospital or any other hospital nominated by Shri Krishna Arogya Trust (SKAT).ny person between the ages of three months to 75 years is eligible to opt for the scheme.

So far, at least 45,000 people have enrolled themselves under KAS scheme.KAT plans to expand the work in rural areas by tying up with like-minded organization for maximizing benefits of the unique scheme.

“Till now this scheme is restricted only to Anand and Kheda districts. Our own hospital takes part in this organization. As our scheme grows, we would go to rural areas and tie up with like-minded organizations there,” said Pragnesh Gor, General Manager, Extension programme for Krupa scheme.

A special mobile van run by the Shri Krishna hospital also goes door to door to spread awareness about the health care scheme. Gujarat hospital launches unique grain for health scheme for poor

Ahmedabad, May 24 (ANI): Villagers in Anand and Kheda in Gujarat can now avail medical benefits of up to Rs.5000 at Rs.90 or ten kilograms of food grains.

The Shri Krishna Hospital is promoting this unique initiative called the Krupa Arogya Suraksha (KAS) social security scheme.

The insurance cover will increase on higher subscription.

Under the scheme the hospital accepts food grains instead of money from people who belong to the special categories like landless labourers, farmers and other deprived section of the society, which accounts for 30 percent of the population in that district.

“We believe, a scheme such as the one we have, where you pay seven or eight kilograms of rice or wheat can be a good way to cover themselves through our scheme,” said Sandeep Desai, CEO, H.M Patel Center for Medical care managed by Charotar Arogya Mandal.

A special mobile van run by the Shri Krishna Hospital also goes door to door to spread awareness about the health care scheme and collects food grains from the families who enroll for the treatment.

This scheme also provides maternity benefits on completion of ten months of membership without any additional charges. It also covers pre-existing condition unlike other medi-claim policies. (ANI)

American Idol” judges spare finalist Matt Giraud

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The four “American Idol” judges used their one-time-only veto power on Wednesday to spare Matt Giraud from being sent home after the hit talent show’s fans cast the fewest votes for his performance of “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?”

“Matt, it’s good news,” Simon Cowell told the singer, who broke down in tears after the judges’ unanimous decision allowed him to stay in the competition at least one more week. The audience, which had chanted “Save, save, save!” cheered wildly.

Giraud first had to perform the Bryan Adams song from the film “Don Juan DeMarco” one more time, and Cowell said Giraud had actually done better on Tuesday. He began by saying, “I don’t really see that you have really any chance of winning” as the other judges voiced disagreement.

Cowell also told the other finalists, who surrounded Giraud in an emotional group embrace, “I wouldn’t be so quick to congratulate him,” because the save meant two singers will be sent home next week and the veto had been used.

Giraud, 23, from Kalamazoo, Michigan, had drawn tepid feedback with Randy Jackson saying, “You fell down more places in that song tonight … it wasn’t one of your best performances.” With more than 36 million votes cast since Tuesday’s broadcast during “American Idol”‘s movie-themed week, fans apparently agreed.

Anoop Desai, 21, and Lil Rounds, 23, were the other bottom-three finishers for the second consecutive week. Desai also landed among the bottom three two weeks ago.

The other remaining finalists are Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey, Allison Iraheta and Kris Allen.

Highlights of Wednesday’s live broadcast included the return of season three finalist Jennifer Hudson, who triumphed over what many considered a premature elimination by landing a plum role in the hit film “Dreamgirls,” and winning a best supporting actress Oscar. Hudson performed “If This Isn’t Love” from her debut album, which recently won her a Grammy award.

“Hannah Montana” star Miley Cyrus also performed.

“American Idol” pits aspiring singers against one another in a series of competitions that focus on a musical theme each week. It is the most-watched TV show in the United States, with more than 24 million viewers per episode broadcast by the Fox network, a unit of News Corp.

Past winners of the competition such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, as well as runners-up such as Clay Aiken have gone on to lucrative music careers as well as in film and on Broadway.

The winner of “American Idol”‘s eighth season will be announced during a live finale in May.
