Adebayor lifts lid on his abusive treatment by Arsenal

London, Sep 18 (ANI): Emmanuel Adebayor has criticized Arsenal after getting a three-match ban for his stamp on striker Robin van Persie.

“There is only so much abuse a man can take until he reaches breaking point,” Adebayor said.

Adebayor lifted the lid on his treatment by the Gunners and their fans that led to his outrageous behaviour in Saturday’s 4-2 win, and insisted: “Arsenal players refused to shake his hand before the game.”

He suffered 60 minutes of non-stop abuse from away fans before he turned the tables on them with his goal, The Sun reports.

Arsene Wenger completed his 25 million pounds summer move from Arsenal behind his back.

Adebayor, banned for Sunday’s Manchester derby, said: “I could not understand some of the Arsenal players being disrespectful towards me.”

“I was being abused by people who six months ago were singing my name. The abuse was for no reason. It wasn’t my fault I left, it was Arsene who wanted to accept the offer for me,” he added. (ANI)

Doctors confident they can save footie star Davenport’s leg

London, Aug.26 (ANI): Doctors have said they are “confident” of saving stabbed footballer Calum Davenport’s leg.

The West Ham player is making a good recovery and was moved from intensive care to a general ward.

It was feared the 26-year-old Premier League defender may lose his left leg after being stabbed several times on Saturday.

A main artery was severed in the attack, allegedly carried out by his pregnant sister’s boyfriend Worrell Whitehurst.

Calum’s family, who are keeping a bedside vigil at Bedford Hospital, were said to be “over the moon”.

Calum’s mum Kim, 50, who was also injured in the attack, has been discharged from the same hospital.

Whitehurst, 25, from Derby, is charged with grievous bodily harm. (ANI)

Man who attempted murder of West Ham star is his sister’s lover

London, Aug. 24 (ANI): A man who allegedly tried to murder West Ham footballer Calum Davenport is said to be his sister’s boyfriend.

The West Ham defender, 26, was stabbed in both legs early on Saturday at his mother’s house in Bedford.

Davenport and his mother were said to be in a “serious condition” in hospital.

Bedford Police arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder in Derby on Saturday.

According to The Sun, the suspect is the boyfriend of Calum’s sister Cara – said to be five months pregnant with the alleged attacker’s child.

Cara, 28, has been going out with him for about a year.

The attack reportedly came after a “blazing row” in which Calum told Cara that he was concerned about the company she kept.

“Cara’s boyfriend knew Calum would be at his mum’s house so he went round there. There was a row which then spilled on to the drive and down the street and Calum was stabbed. It was a mess,” the paper quoted a friend, as saying. (ANI)

Barca’s Messi takes a swipe at Man U’s Ronaldo

London, May 20 (ANI): Barcelona’s Argentine football star Lionel Messi has had a dig at Manchester United’s Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the Champions League final, saying: It’s not about you and me.

Messi, 21, said: “Nobody plays to be the best player in the world. This is a team game. I don’t see it as a tussle between Cristiano and me. It will be a Barca-Manchester battle. What is important is that Barcelona are champions of Europe on May 27 in Rome.”

“If we are champions it will certainly help me, but this is secondary,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.essi’s words will not be lost on Ronaldo.

The Portugal star was criticised for caring more about himself than the team after his strop when subbed in the Manchester derby.

Boss Alex Ferguson wanted to rest Ronaldo after securing a 2-0 cushion but the winger wanted to stay on and beat Nicolas Anelka to the Premier League top scorer gong.

Messi has an even bigger prize in sight. Barcelona has already won the Double in Spain and he is now eyeing a Treble to match United’s triumph in 1999. (ANI)

Ronaldo launches tantrum at Ferguson

London, May 11 (ANI): Manchester United star striker Cristiano Ronaldo pushed Manchester United to the brink of the title, but then blew his top with manager Alex Ferguson.

Shocked TV viewers saw him throw a tantrum after being hauled off an hour into this easy derby win over Manchester City.

Ronaldo angrily pushed away a tracksuit held out to him and, as he sat on the bench, called the decision “a joke”.

Yet boss Fergie backed the player’s reaction.

The Sun quoted him as saying: “He wanted to stay on. He’s in great form but I have to look at the big picture. We have to think about keeping him as fresh as we can. It’s fabulous that they want to play. Of course he wants to play, you know what he’s like. He’s such a great athlete but he ran his socks off on Tuesday.”

“I’ve got Wednesday night at Wigan and Saturday against Arsenal to think about. So there was no problem. Wednesday will be a hard game. I’ll freshen it up again. We’ll make two or three changes. I need to do that because I’ve a big squad and I need to keep them playing,” he added.

Ronaldo’s tantrum reignited talk of the 26-goal ace moving from Old Trafford to long-term suitors Real Madrid, who are mulling over another bid this summer. (ANI)

Hiddink asks Abramovich not to hit Drogba with heavy punishment

London, May 10 (ANI): Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink has appealed to club owner Roman Abramovich not to hit Didier Drogba with a heavy punishment for his hounding of Champions League referee Tom Henning Ovrebo.

Chelsea have already decided to make the controversial Drogba available this summer, if the right offer comes in, after his antics at the end of their Champions League semi-final defeat against Barcelona, The Daily Express reports.

But Hiddink, set to rest Drogba for London derby with Arsenal because he does not believe his key striker is mentally ready, is adamant he should not also be handed a club fine.

Drogba, Michael Ballack and Chelsea themselves will next week almost certainly be given hefty UEFA bans and fines for their angry protests to Ovrebo on Wednesday, after he denied them at least two clear penalties.

Hiddink does not want Drogba further disillusioned by internal measures when he needs him firing on all cylinders for Chelsea’s last chance of honours in the FA Cup final against Everton on May 30.

That is set to be the final game at the club for both, with Hiddink returning to Russia and Marseille desperate to bring Drogba back.

Hiddink said: “It is up to me and the board whether he is disciplined or not, but I don’t think so. He has already apologised publicly, and that is a big step. We have to move on. His future is not up to me.” (ANI)

Manchester City skipper says Ronaldo conning referees

London, May 9 (ANI): Manchester City captain Richard Dunne has accused Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo of conning referees ahead of tomorrow’s derby.
“At times, he can be running so fast any nick could send him tumbling. He makes the most of the situation, I suppose. Some referees give free kicks but some don’t. He is the best player in the world and he plays the game to his advantage,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.
Dunne also had a go at Chelsea after Barcelona knocked them out of the Champions League in stoppage time on Wednesday.

Asked if he felt too much diving had crept into the game, he replied: “It has more and more but you just think what goes around comes around. You dive around and teams score against you in injury time!”

Dunne, sent off three times this season, knows Manchester City have to keep a tight leash on United superstar Ronaldo in tomorrow’s showdown at Old Trafford.

The Irish defender said: “Diving or not diving, he’s impossible to mark when he’s on form. (ANI)

Title race reopened after Inter Milan stumble

Rome – A spate of ifs and buts Monday flooded the commentaries on a Serie A weekend that saw leaders Inter Milan crash to a 1-0 defeat at Napoli, allowing city rivals AC Milan to keep alive their scudetto dreams with five games left. Milan beat Palermo 3-0 and moved to within seven points of Inter, which triggered the regrets of club president and Italy Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

“Without that goal (scored for Inter) with a hand by Adriano in the derby we’d be right behind Inter,” Berlusconi said. “But it’s also true that with conditionals you go nowhere in football.”

The 2-1 defeat suffered in mid-February is just one of Milan’s missed chances in a season they played for the most part with massive deficits, up to 14 points, from Inter.

A good run of six wins and one draw, however, has given the Devils hopes for one of those rallies that the Serie A has witnessed in the past.

In 2000, for instance, Lazio filled a nine-point gap in five games to leapfrog Juventus in the last round of games.

Milan veteran Filippo Inzaghi, who scored 10 goals in the past seven games, noted that the Devils’ pace is finally good enough for a title race.

“It’s a pity that we had so many injuries this year,” Inzaghi said, while Dutchman Clarence Seedorf, another team veteran, said that “we have the duty to believe (in a rally) until the end.”

Inter remain the favourites to win a fourth straight title, but, with just two points gained from the past three games, some of their fans are beginning to worry despite the optimism of Jose Mourinho.

“We shouldn’t look behind us. We don’t care about chasers,” the Portuguese coach said. “We should rather do some self criticism and think of securing nine points in the last five games. Practically, we need three wins, and we can get them.”

Mourinho’s condition – if we win three games – seems to be easy to fulfil given a schedule that pits Inter against Lazio, Chievo, Siena, Cagliari and Atalanta, five teams with little to gain or lose in the remainder of the season.

Things could be harder for Milan as they face tough games with Juventus, who didn’t enjoy being leapfrogged in second place, Roma and Fiorentina, both keen on securing berths either in the Champions League or the Europa League, which is to replace the UEFA Cup.

Games with Catania and Udinese should pose little threat for the Devils, although both are away affairs.

As Gianni Mura wrote Monday on la Repubblica, “more than being reopened, the league will be less boring.”

And, until the end of May, there will be plenty of room for ifs and buts, both considering past games and looking forward.(dpa)

Old, chipped teapot fetches #80k at auction!

London, Apr 16 (ANI): A chipped teapot which makes only one cup of tea has fetched a record 80,000 pounds at an auction.

The 250-year-old tiny antique was discovered in a pile of bric-a-brac, and carries a message against the act that led to the Boston Tea Party.

The rare orange pot was made by Wedgwood and carries the controversial messages “No Stamp Act” and “Success to Trade in America”. It implies protest against the Stamp Tax – the row that led to the American Revolution and US independence.

The five inch high orange teapot, made in the reign of George III before he went mad, excited interest on both sides of the Atlantic when it went up for sale.

It was discovered by an expert in a box of bric-a-brac that had been brought to his saleroom by a local man.

Charles Hanson, whose auctioneers sold the teapot at a hotel in Derby, said it was made in about 1765.

“It came in to us in a box of bric-a-brac and was among lots of Crown Derby and glassware,” The Daily Express quoted him, as saying.

“In the box was this tiny teapot and when I pointed it out the man said it had belonged to his mother and said it wasn’t worth anything and he’d take it away with him.

“But then I told him what it was and that it was worth more than everything else in his box put together,” he said.

Hanson added: “The bidding was electric. It probably went so high because rarity value and status on some objects march very well together. It was a must-have teapot for two collectors and money was no object. It’s remarkable, given that it has a chipped spout, chipped lid, a broken body and stands only five inches tall. In fact, it makes only one cup of tea – although I doubt the buyer will be making tea in it.” (ANI)

Papa Clem wins million dollar Arkansas Derby

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Papa Clem, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, secured a spot in the Kentucky Derby by winning the one million dollar Arkansas Derby on Saturday.

The Southern California-based son of Smart Strike wore down favorite Old Fashioned in the stretch to win the Grade II, mile-and-an-eighth affair at Oaklawn Park in one minute 49.01 seconds.

The victory was worth $600,000 for Papa Clem, giving the colt more than enough graded stakes earnings to qualify for the Kentucky Derby in three weeks.

In another Derby prep, General Quarters captured the Grade I, $750,000 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.

British government files show 1200 incidents of UFO sightings

London, Mar 22 (ANI): British Defence Ministry abandoned plans for a secret computer database of UFO sightings for fear they would be mocked if its existence were revealed to the public, according to declassified government documents.

The idea was scrapped because officials did not want people to believe they were taking the idea of visitors from outer space seriously.

Instead, the MoD continued to keep only paper records of almost 1,200 sightings reported between 1987 and 1993, The Independent reports.

These include pie shaped flying saucers and diamond-shaped shards of light in the night sky. The files, to be posted on the National Archives website, include the story of an alien banana-man spotted in west London in May 1989.

Sightings for the first two months of 2009 have been higher than for any year for which records are publicly available, and are three times higher than the normal monthly average.

Most of the UFO “sightings” contained in the national archives were ultimately explained away. But the Scottish event still remains a mystery.

Another mystery was the story of a woman who said that while walking her dog near Norwich in November 1989 she was approached by a man with a flying suit and “a Scandinavian-type accent”.

The report notes: “He asked her if she was aware of stories about large circular flattened areas appearing in fields of wheat, and then went on to explain that he was from another planet similar to Earth, and that the circles had been caused by others like him.”

The report said he disappeared and, as she ran away in fear, the woman saw a large glowing orange-white ball rising vertically from behind trees.

Other recorded incidents include a spate of UFO sightings in London in 1993 which were all put down to the presence of a brightly illuminated airship advertising the new Ford Mondeo, strange circular lights lighting up the sky in Rochdale in 1987, and various reports of strange objects in Derby in the same year, one of which “left a trail of bright blobs behind it”.

An “elongated spinning top” apparently three times the size of an airship was spotted by a taxi driver in Huddersfield in 1990. The night before, he had reported a silver spacecraft emitting green, red and white beams, The Independent reports.

The MoD also looked into a photo of a diamond-shaped light hovering above an air base in Pitlochry. The bright light was spotted jerking vertically in a strange movement in August 1990.

Several documents cover the death of an US pilot attached to the RAF who crashed into the North Sea in 1970. Captain William Schaffner’s death was investigated 20 years later after claims he had gone missing after approaching a bright light off the east coast.

In 1992, The Grimsby Evening Telegraph printed an alleged transcript of his call back to base in which he reportedly said he had seen something like a large soccer ball made of glass. It’s like bobbing up and down and going from side to side slowly.

The MoD insisted in its reports that there had been nothing sinister and Captain Shaffner had misjudged how low he was flying and had then failed to operate his ejector seat properly.

The MoD said it recorded each sighting to help ministers answer questions from MPs in Parliament – but they were always kept on paper. Notes from March 1988 show that the plan for a full computerised database was spiked. (ANI)

UK survey says simple pleasures can provide the antidote to recession

London, Mar.19 (ANI): People in the UK are turning to simple pleasures, such as spending time in beautiful surroundings, to get them through the gloom of the recession, figures from the National Trust show today.

Faced with a barrage of bad news about the economy, and the need to find ways to make their money go further, more and more people are turning to buildings and gardens such as those owned by The National Trust.

In fact, helped by the good weather and that several properties are opening earlier in response to demand, visitor numbers to the Trust’s properties rose 50 per cent during February half term this year, compared with last – with some historic houses seeing as many as four times the number of visitors throughout February 2009, against the same month last year.

According to the poll, a staggering 84 per cent admit that simple pleasures, such as a day out near home, would be more important to them this year than ever before.

The survey of 2,000 people, carried out by The National Trust, asked what kinds of days out appealed most and found that 64 per cent said a walk in the park, a similar number chose to visit either a historic house or beautiful garden, while 36 per cent opted to visit a museum or gallery.

The quick but more costly thrills offered by theme parks and sporting events were both markedly less popular, being selected by only 26 per cent and 13 per cent respectively.

And, despite living in a society where more than 55 per cent of people acknowledge there is less beauty than there once was, 90 per cent want their days out to be in beautiful places.

Fiona Reynolds, Director General of the National Trust, said: “We all need quality time to relax and recharge our batteries, whether in a recession or not.

“Getting away from it all and spending a day with family and friends in beautiful surroundings is becoming essential to help ease away the stresses and strains. And contact with nature and history clearly provides what people need,” she added.

The desire to ensure that leisure time is well spent seems to be strongest in the East Midlands, where visitor numbers across all the area’s National Trust properties rose by 137 per cent.

The North West of England saw a rise of 91 per cent across all its properties, while visitors to sites in Northern Ireland rose 68 per cent. Croome Park in the West Midlands has seen the most dramatic rise for an individual property, with more than four times the number of people visiting this February compared with last year. Calke Abbey, near Derby, saw an increase of 225 per cent, while Ham House – where parts of the film The Young Victoria were filmed – saw a rise of 118 per cent.

The National Trust looks after 300 historic houses and gardens across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. (ANI)

Kashmir takes up skiing in a big way

Gulmarg, Mar 3 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took up skiing to promote tourism after inaugurating the international skiing championship, ‘Gulmarg Global Derby 2009′.

“What better promotion of Gulmarg can I do than to show people that even I can ski without the whole cordon of security people skiing down the mountain with me. This is the message that I want to send out that Jammu and Kashmir is open to business, and its open to tourists,” Abdullah said.

The International Winter Games is being organised by the All India Winter Games Federation. Nine countries, including the US and Russia, are participating in the three-day event.

Increasing numbers of foreign skiers are now whizzing down the pristine Himalayan slopes of Kashmir.

“We feel it’s a fantastic place because it is very different from our Alps. It’s full of snow. The ambience is really exciting and it’s beautiful,” said Lewton, a skier from Italy.

About 250 skiers including 50 foreigners are expected to take part in the three-day international winter games.

The vent would include cross-country skiing competition followed by Alpine run super slalom.

Gulmarg, a bowl shaped plateau at an altitude of 8,500 feet in the Pir Panjal ranges is a favourite destination for tourists to indulge in winter sports.

The slopes in Gulmarg varying between 8,700 and 10,500 feet are the highest ski runs in India. Heli-skiing is another winter sport that is quite popular at Gulmarg, which boasts of being the only heli-skiing resort in Asia. (ANI)

Ferguson challenges Man-U to become the ‘Invincibles’

London, Feb.20 (ANI): Sir Alex Ferguson has challenged Manchester United’s ‘Untouchables’ to become the ‘Invincibles’ by winning every game they play between now and the end of the season.

According to The Telegraph, the European and Premier League champions are now best priced at just 14-1 by the bookmakers to complete an unprecedented quintuple this season by adding the Carling Cup, Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophies to the FIFA Club World Cup won in Japan two months ago.

Wednesday’s 3-0 victory against Fulham lifted United five points clear of closest rivals Liverpool in the race for the championship and that lead will become eight points by Saturday evening if Ferguson’s team defeat Blackburn at home ahead of Liverpool’s game with Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

But with United on a 10-game winning streak in all competitions and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar now unbeaten in 14 consecutive league games, the prospects of an historic end to the season at Old Trafford are now increasing.

Ferguson, whose team were described as “untouchable” by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger last week, has raised the bar ever higher for his players by insisting that they target wins in all of their remaining fixtures this season.

Ferguson said: “We are in excellent form. We may not win every game between now and May, but that will be our aim. There is a mental toughness about the team these days and that will stand us in good stead as the pressure builds.

“This current group of players has been together for a couple of seasons and they have developed strong bonds and, as we enter the final months of the season, I think we are going to take some beating.”

United have not dropped points in the league since a 0-0 draw at Tottenham on December 13, with the Carling Cup semi-final first-leg reverse at Derby on Jan 7 their only defeat in 25 outings in all competitions.

Next Tuesday’s Champions League date with Italian champions Inter Milan in the San Siro will provide a stern test of United’s quintuple hopes, but despite the confidence generated by the recent run, Ferguson insists that complacency will not be an issue. (ANI)

Milan Derby defeat should not affect chances of staying on in Italy: Beckham

London, Feb.16 (ANI): England midfielder David Beckham has insisted that last night’s Milan derby defeat will not wreck his hopes of staying on in Italy.
AC Milan went down 2-1 to Inter and Becks said: “This result should not make one bit of difference. I’m aware they want me for the rest of the season.”

“Hopefully things will go the way I want. They’ll talk in the next week or two. If I do go back it will be a bit difficult. We’ll have to wait and see. I’m always professional,” The Sun quoted Beckham, as saying.
Beckham last night became the first player in history to play in Europe’s three major club duels.

He had already starred in Liverpool v Manchester United and Real Madrid v Barcelona and completed a triple at the San Siro.

“I’m proud to have played but we needed a win. There’s still a title chance but it’s slim,” he said.(ANI)

Beckham admits that his US stint has been a flop

London, Feb.15 (ANI): England mid-fielder David Beckham has admitted quite candidly that his two seasons with the American football club L A Galaxy have been far from satisfactory, and he continues to look forward to playing with Italian football giants A C Milan.

Beckham, who will add another remarkable chapter to his career today when he walks into the San Siro for the 199th Milan derby, was quoted by News of The World as saying: “I’ve always said I don’t regret things and I don’t regret the two seasons at LA. They might have been disappointing in that we haven’t won anything or even made the play-offs – but I’ve met some really good people and there are really good people at the club.”

The devoted father-of-three is so desperate to secure a long-term deal in Serie A that he is prepared to sacrifice precious time with his children.

He explained: “It’s going to be tough for the family because when you have children, the main decision is where the kids are going to be happiest and, to be honest, the kids are so settled in America and so settled in their school.e and Victoria will always put our children before anything. That’s the decision that, if something does happen, we will have to look at. Obviously, if we didn’t have the children, we would move straight away but we have enjoyed living in LA and love living there – and the kids are happy there.”

“I realised I wanted to stay (at A C Milan) pretty soon after I had arrived. To be honest, I had expected to go there for a few months and then return to the Galaxy. It didn’t really enter my mind when I made the loan decision to stay there,” Beckham said.

“I’ve been very lucky to have played in those games and this one will have a hell of an atmosphere because it’s our away game and the stadium will be full of Inter fans,” he added.

He also described Inter’s Jose Mourinho as one of the best managers in football. (ANI)

A C Milan will make a 10.5 million pound bid for Beckham today.

London, Feb.13 (ANI): Italian club A C Milan has said that it will make a 10.5 million pound bid for securing the transfer of England football star David Beckham from L. A. Galaxy today.

The announcement comes days after the MLS asked the club to settle the England star’s future by the end of this week.

Milan’s five million pound has already been rejected by L A Galaxy, The Sun reports.

But with Becks, 33, quickly establishing himself as an integral part of the team, Milan are willing to up their bid. They face a crucial derby match against Jose Mourinho’s Inter this weekend and want Beckham’s future resolved beforehand.

The player himself has made no secret of his desire to stay and praised the club for improving his fitness and game.

He said: “Milan has done me the world of good. I am much fitter than a few months ago. In a month and a half, my fitness has grown by 100 per cent. I want to stay and the negotiations are ongoing so I’m hoping for a quick outcome.” (ANI)

United fight back to book final berth

London – Manchester United overcame a 1-0 first-leg deficit on Tuesday, beating Derby County 4-2 in the second leg to secure their place in the Carling Cup final by a 4-3 aggregate.

Kris Commons had given Derby a surprise first-leg victory, but they were blown away before half-time at Old Trafford, conceding three goals in a 20-minute spell.

Nani got the first with a spectacular swerving drive, although television replays suggested goalkeeper Roy Carroll might have done rather better.

John O’Shea, played onside by Gary Teale, rolled in his first of the season to make it 2-0, and Carlos Tevez headed a third from a Rafael cross.

Derby steadied in the second half, and pulled one back with an 80th minute Giles Barnes penalty, after Jonny Evans had tripped Paul Green.

Cristiano Ronaldo converted an 88th-minute penalty after a foul by Carroll on Tevez seemingly to make the game secure.

But Derby still weren’t finished, Barnes driving in a low free-kick in injury-time.

Tottenham Hotspur take a 4-1 first-leg lead to Burnley in Wednesday’s second semi-final. dpa

Cologne and Leverkusen fined over flares

Cologne and Leverkusen fined over flaresFrankfurt – German Bundesliga clubs Bayer Leverkusen and Cologne were both fined by the German Football Federation (DFB) Monday after flares and firecrackers landed on the pitch in the recent derby match between the sides.

Cologne have been hit with a fine of 23,000 euros (29,500 dollars) while Leverkusen, which hosted the game on October 24, have to pay 10,000 euros.

The missiles were fired from the Cologne fan section at the BayArena ground in the direction of a linesman and a Leverkusen player.

Cologne’s higher fine took into account an incident at the team’s home match against Bayern Munich in September when an empty cup was thrown towards a linesman. (dpa)
