Youths, police clash in Srinagar over ”blasphemous” depiction

Srinagar, June 6 (PTI) Groups of youths took out a procession here today to protest alleged blasphemous depiction of Kaba Sharief on some products and clashed with police prompting them to fire warning shots and tear smoke shells. The protests continued for the second day today in the city despite Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appealing to people not to pay heed to “rumours”.

Fifteen persons were injured in clashes between police and stone-pelting protestors in the city yesterday. Youth carrying garments allegedly depicting photographs of Kaba Sharief took out a march in Maisuma in the heart of the city trying to enforce a shutdown but police prevented them from coming on the main road, officials said.

They said the protesters pelted stones on the policemen who retaliated with tear smoke shells. They also fired a few warning shots to disperse them, the officials added.

The clashes remained confined to the Maisuma locality, they said adding, no one was injured. Police after examining the garments found that they carry imprints and sketches of various buildings which resemble places like Big Ben in London, St Paul”s Cathedral of London and other places.

“No sketch has any likeness to any Muslim religious place or building,” a police spokesman said. Disturbed over the protests, Omar last night appealed to people not to fall prey to rumour-mongers.

“Some elements are bent upon to disturb peace for vested interests and people should not get carried away by their nefarious designs,” he said. Meanwhile, protests also rocked Banihal town of Jammu region, where a shutdown was observed on the issue.

Over 1,000 people took out a protest rally on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and raised slogans. They also blocked traffic for some time.

Beware of rumour mongers: Omar to people

Srinagar, Jun 6 (PTI) People should not fall prey to emotional blackmailing and beware of rumour mongers bent upon disturbing peace for vested interests, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said. His comments came in the wake of violent protest by people over alleged blasphemous depiction of the holy city of Madina on some products, the reports which later proved to be incorrect after police investigation.

“Some elements are bent upon disturbing peace for vested interests and people should not get carried away by their nefarious designs,” Abdullah said, adding the rumour about desecration of holy places was found totally incorrect. “Even a blind will not say that the picture is of Kaba Sharief,” Abdullah said.

Addressing a function after inaugurating Rs 18-crore Sangarmal Complex here, he said a comprehensive development programme has been started for making Srinagar a model city, for which conducive and peaceful atmosphere is imperative. Without naming any group, he said “some people nurture their politics on disturbance and violence and common people have to bear the brunt”.

Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand said construction of a satellite town in Srinagar has been envisaged, besides other city development works.

S.African paper to apologise for cartoon – Muslim group

A South African weekly, which angered Muslims by publishing a cartoon of Prophet Mohammad, agreed to issue an apology after a meeting with the United Muslims Forum of South Africa on Wednesday, the group said.

Group representatives met Mail & Guardian editor Nic Dawes and cartoonist Zapiro after the paper published a drawing last week depicting the prophet on a psychologist’s couch saying his followers have no sense of humour.

This angered Muslims, who consider as offensive any depiction of the founder of Islam, and raised fears of reprisals during next month’s World Cup. In 2005, a Danish newspaper published cartoons of Mohammad, sparking violent protests that killed several dozen people.

“The Mail and Guardian have agreed to issue a press release in which they record (that the paper) regrets the harm caused by the publication of the cartoon and apologises for the effects thereof,” said a statement from the Muslim group.

Neither Dawes nor anyone at his newspaper were immediately available for comment.

Now, Pak bans Twitter for carrying blasphemous contents

Islamabad, May 21 (ANI): Following a ban on famous networking website Facebook, and popular video sharing portal YouTube, another immensely admired social networking site-Twitter has been banned in Pakistan for carrying blasphemous contents.

Hundreds of Twitter users tried in vain to log in to their accounts as a message- “This site has been restricted,” was displayed on their computer screens.

Acting on the Lahore High Court’s decision the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had earlier directed all internet service providers in the country to shut down both Facebook and YouTube, as protests against the sacrilegious depiction of Prophet Muhammad on these two sites intensified across the country.

A statement issued by the PTA said that it has blocked over 450 links containing offensive content.

In Peshawar, more than 500 people participated in a protest against Facebook for holding competitions of drawing caricatures of Prophet Muhammad. They chanted slogans against the government and demanded it to end all ties with countries where these ‘blasphemous’ caricatures are being published. (ANI)

Pak students against ban on Facebook, YouTube in country

Islamabad, May 21 (ANI): Pakistani students are opposing the government’s decision to ban the hugely popular social networking site-Facebook and video portal YouTube, saying the move would only encourage extremism in the country.

“Pakistani people have the right to know about the world. The extremists want to snatch this right from the people which will certainly help extremism,” The Daily Times quoted student from Karachi, as saying.

“The competition hurt Muslims. But only that link should have been blocked. Facebook has nothing to do with it. It’s just that one page,” a Lahore based student said, while refusing to be named.

It may be noted that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has directed all internet service providers in the country to shut down YouTube, as protests against the sacrilegious depiction of Prophet Muhammad on both YouTube and Facebook intensified across the country.

A statement issued by the PTA said that it has blocked over 450 links containing offensive content.

”Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” triggers Facebook row

Washington, May 20 (ANI): The ”Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” on Facebook, which was a cartoonist”s call to action against censorship, has snowballed into a controversy leading to death threats, a court order and a call for a boycott of the social networking site.

Seattle-based cartoonist named Molly Norris started the campaign in a bid to protest against Comedy Central”s decision to censor an episode of ‘South Park’ that depicted Muhammad in a bear costume.

The network took the decision after an Islamic extremist website warned of retaliation against the show”s creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker

And to protest against the decision, Norris created a poster with likenesses of Muhammad as a domino, a teacup and a box of pasta.

Thus, she declared May 20 as ‘Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!’— and her efforts quickly went viral, spawning several Facebook pages with thousands of followers dedicated to the event.

They also prompted a “protest” movement by thousands of other Facebook users opposed to it.

While Norris herself has withdrawn from the cause, but she is glad her efforts encouraged others to speak out.

“I just thought that Viacom or Comedy Central had overreacted to a veiled threat from a tiny blog or website that not many people even belong to, and I think it just set a precedent for a slippery slope in censorship,” Fox News quoted Norris as saying.

“If artists have to be afraid of what they draw, then what’s the point of even living here? That”s what really bothered me,” she added.

As of May 19, more than 41,000 Facebook users associated themselves to one page dedicated to the event, and a similar page was “liked” by at least 4,400 users.

Meanwhile, over 56,000 users joined a Facebook page opposing it.

And in Pakistan, a court on Wednesday ordered the government to block Facebook pages associated with the campaign until May 31.

Muslims consider any depiction of the Prophet Muhammad to be blasphemous, and it is a crime punishable by death.

“The court also has ordered the foreign ministry to investigate why such a competition is being held,” said Azhar Siddique, a representative of the Islamic Lawyers Forum who filed a petition in the Lahore High Court.

Organizers of the Facebook page protesting the drawing campaign are calling for users to boycott the social networking site for the company”s inaction against the ‘Everybody Draw Mohammad’ pages.

Some say the campaign is nothing more than a way to incite Muslims.

A Facebook spokesman told FoxNews.com it has no plans to censor any of the pages associated with the campaign or the counter-campaign, though threats will be removed. (ANI)

Picasso piece sets record for art sold at auction

NEW YORK, May 4 (Reuters) – Picasso’s “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust” sold for more than $106 million at Christie’s on Tuesday, setting a record for art sold at auction.

The Picasso, a 1932 work not seen publicly in 50 years, was purchased by an anonymous buyer from a world-class collection assembled by the late Los Angeles art patrons Frances and Sidney Brody.

The vibrant, large-scale depiction of Picasso’s mistress and frequent subject, Marie-Therese Walter, was the top priced work at Christie’s sale of Impressionist and modern art.

The sale netted $335.5 million for the auction house.

“Obviously we’re thrilled” with the final price of $106,482,500 including commission for the Picasso, auctioneer Christopher Burge said afterward. He added that there was “incredible bidding” across the range of 69 works on offer, of which more than 80 percent found buyers.

A record was also set for Georges Braque when “La Treille” sold for $10,162,500, or more than twice the pre-sale estimate.

Christie’s said the sale’s total was its third best, with the $224 million Brody take second only among single-owner sales to the Yves St. Laurent sale in Paris.

Nearly three-quarters of the winning bids came equally from U.S. and European bidders, while one-fourth were categorized as “other,” a designation that includes collectors from the Mideast.

Christie’s Americas Chairman Marc Porter said the sale was also marked by “an extremely heavy rate of participation from new collectors, in new economies.”

The sale, dominated by Picassos and Giacomettis, was not without its casualties, notably Edvard Munch’s “Fertility,” which was estimated around $30 million but went unsold when no one bid beyond $23 million.

But the big spending, especially for the Brody works, spoke to the willingness of deep-pocketed collectors to purchase rare works of impeccable provenance.

Three Giacometti sculptures also saw strong prices. A narrow bust, a forearm with outstretched hand and a walking cat, all bronzes from the Brody collection, fetched $55.3 million, $25.84 million and $20.8 million respectively.

The spring sales continue on Wednesday with Sotheby’s auction of Impressionist and modern art

‘Wikipedia’s parent co distributing child porn’

Wikipedia’s co-founder Larry Sanger has said that the online encyclopedia’s parent company, Wikimedia Commons, is knowingly distributing child pornography in their products.

Sanger, who left Wikipedia in 2002, said the Wiki products, including Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikinews and Wikiquote, is rife with renderings of children performing sexual acts.

He said he has sent a letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) outlining his concerns and identifying two specific categories, which he believes violate federal obscenity laws.

The first category, entitled “Pedophilia”, created three years ago, contains 25 to 30 explicit and detailed drawings of children performing sexual acts, while the second, “Lilicon,” provides cartoons similar in detail and depiction.

“I was not shocked that it was online, but I was shocked that it was on a Wikimedia Foundation site that purports to be a reference site,” Fox News quoted Sanger, as saying.

“I think a lot of teachers and education technologists responsible for the filters at public schools don’t realize how much and what level of pornography there is in the system. I’m quite sure that if they knew there were pages devoted to pedophilia, it might make them think twice about giving students unrestricted access in schools.”

“I’m going to sound really old fashioned, but I felt that it was my duty. I really did. Wikimedia has quite a bit of pornography on it and they had no idea,” he added.

Man seeks ban on Tintin in Congo citing its racist content

London, Apr 28 (ANI): Tintin in Congo is once again facing the flak for its allegedly racist depiction of black people.

Bienvenue Mbutu, a Congolese national living in Belgium, has asked the Belgian courts to ban the book, but has said he would accept a ruling that the book must display a warning about its content.

Mr Mbutu has also tried to have the book banned in France.

“Tintin”s little (black) helper is seen as stupid and without qualities. It makes people think that blacks have not evolved,” he has been quoted as saying.

A Belgium court, home to the book”s author Hergé, is due to rule on the matter later today, the BBC reports.

Three years ago the UK”s Commission for Racial Equality called for the book to be banned, saying it contained imagery and words of hideous racial prejudice.

The book has been criticized time and again for depicting crass depiction of black people and reinforcing racial stereotypes.

In the book, a black woman bows to Tintin and says: “White man very great.

White mister is big juju man!”

The celebrated creator of the character, Herge said it was a youthful sin that reflected the prejudices prevalent at the time it was conceived, reports The Telegraph. (ANI)

Red Shirts flood streets to enlist public support

Thousands of Thai protesters packed trucks, cars and motorbikes in a carnival-like convoy Saturday aimed at winning over the capital’s residents in their flagging class war against the government.

The supporters of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra began snaking across the capital mid-morning, dressed in their distinctive red and bringing traffic in some areas to a halt.

Police estimated there were around 25,000 demonstrators, who waved, cheered, honked horns and blared music in their day-long drive to recruit the urban middle classes and revive their waning rally, now in its seventh day.

In what they have increasingly dubbed a class war, the so-called Red Shirts say they are fighting Thailand’s elite in bureaucratic, military and royal circles, whom they accuse of ousting elected governments.

The mainly poor, rural protesters say prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s government is illegitimate, as it came to power with army backing via a December 2008 parliamentary vote after a controversial court ruling removed Mr Shinawatra’s allies.

“We will travel to find love from the people of Bangkok and to unite them with us, the poor peasants, to overthrow the elite-backed government,” Red Shirt leader Veera Musikapong told the crowds before their convoy set off.

Mr Vejjajiva, who has stood firm against the protesters’ demand for snap elections, criticised the depiction of a class struggle.

He said Mr Shinawatra, who was ousted in a coup in 2006, was an “obstacle to negotiation” between the government and Red Shirts, who have rejected the prime minister’s conditional offer of talks.

Despite the buoyant mood of Saturday’s convoy, numbers were far down on their peak of more than 100,000 when the rally began last weekend.

The Thai government later announced that one of its ministers would meet a representative of the Red Shirts on Monday.

Satit Wonghnongtaey, the minister attached to the prime minister’s office, will meet Weng Tojirakarn, considered a second-tier leader of the protest movement.

Becks censors his Cupid and Psyche tattoo

London, Mar 8 (ANI): David Beckham has revealed his latest tattoo— a Renaissance-inspired body-art of Cupid and Psyche.

The inkwork has been inspired from a painting by 15th century artist Francesco Francia showing god of love Cupid carrying wife Psyche to heaven.

However, the AC Milan ace, 34, has had a veil drawn on her to protect her modesty.

The footballer unveiled the tattoo after his side’s 0-0 draw at rivals Roma over the weekend.

“Perhaps David thought it was a little rude for some of his younger fans,” the Mirror quoted an AC Milan source as saying.

The latest body-art apparently totals Becks’ tattoo- count to 14.

His last one was also based on a painting – British artist Matthew R Brooks’ depiction of a bleeding Christ.

In his memoirs, ‘Both Feet on the Ground’, Beckham said of his tattoos: “They’re about the important people in my life, my wife and sons.” (ANI)

Spencer Tunick eyes Salford for next naked human formation

London, March 8 (ANI): Spencer Tunick, the renowned artist behind formations featuring large numbers of nude people, has set his sight on Salford, Greater Manchester, England as the destination for his next commission.

The famous photographer, whose diverse locations include Sydney Opera House and a vineyard in Burgundy, is set to pay homage to LS Lowry, the late English painter known for his depiction of ordinary people and their lives in Salford and surrounding areas.

Tunick hopes to recruit 1,000 people and take them to eight locations around the city on May 1 and 2 for his latest photographic work entitled Everyday People.

“Salford and Manchester presents an intriguing prospect for my latest UK installation based both on the rich industrial heritage that exists across both cities and the art of LS Lowry. His paintings depicting the mass of everyday people who contributed to the industrial machine of the 20th century also provide an interesting frame of reference for possible compositions,” Times Online quoted Tunick as saying.

Michael Howard, a lecturer in art and design at Manchester Metropolitan University and the author of LS Lowry: A Visionary Artist, claimed Lowry would have highly favoured Tunick’s project.

He said: “[Lowry] studied life drawing for 20 years, both the male and female form. So he would have been absolutely fascinated by it. He was obsessed by people and places.”

Howard added: “He showed us a world made strange. It is the same with Spencer Tunick.” (ANI)

A docudrama plays a story of women cricketers’ struggle and triumph

Kolkata, Sep 9 (ANI): A docudrama titled ‘Indian Women’s Cricket team Poor Cousins of Million Dollar Babies’ highlights the disparity between men and women cricket players in India.

As the title suggests, the docudrama shows how while men cricketers hog all the limelight and bask in the glory of success and money, women cricketers are way behind their male counterparts though they have been able to carve a name for themselves in the international sport arena.

The 25-minute audio-visual commentary narrates a story of the triumph of women’s cricket despite the disparities and differential treatment.

Former Indian Skipper Anjum Chopra said the docudrama has been able to mirror the women cricketers’ struggle, hard work and determination to reach the milestone they have achieved despite receiving far less attention of sports authority, sponsorship and media coverage as compared with their male counterparts.

“I really liked it. I think it’s very nice. It covers a lot of angels into the lives of women cricketers on and off the field. It’s a true depiction of the lives and struggles of Indian women cricketers go through,” Anjum Chopra added.

The The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI ) spends millions of rupees on men’s cricket and its stalwart players but women’s team, which has consistently done well in the context of world tournaments, has not received the same attention and promotion.

Sunil Yash Kalra, who has directed the documentary, said it’s time to tell the story of players engaged in the most popular and fast growing game in India despite their gender.

“It’s a sport which is a nerve centre of India, the subcontinent. And, it’s also included in the Asian Games next year. So, basically if you were to look at it… A, it’s the fastest growing game. B, there is a story that needs to be told about each individual member, that’s what the idea is to showcase the best to the rest of the world,” Kalra added.

The film also reveals interesting facts about women’s cricket in India. For example, women’s cricket in India can be traced back to early 20th century when an Australian school teacher Anne Kelleve made cricket a compulsory game at the Baker Memorial School in Kottayam, Kerala, in 1913.

The Women’s World Cup was initiated in 1973, two years before the men’s World Cup. And, Indian eves played T20 international cricket in 2006 while Indian men played their first match in 2007. (ANI)

Hindu goddess gives second life to ‘Deadman’ in upcoming Hollywood film

Washington, September 7 (ANI): A film adaptation of DC Comics character “Deadman” will reportedly feature a Hindu goddess giving second life to a dead man, and helping him win a battle against evil.

Nikolaj Arcel (Kongekabale) will helm the Warner Bros project that apparently mentions a “Hindu goddess” and “Rama” in the storyline.

Guillermo del Toro (El laberinto del fauno) will reportedly produce the movie that has drawn concerns from Hinduism experts over the reported religious reference.

Rajan Zed, a renowned Hindu statesman, said in a statement in Nevada, US, if the Oscar nominated producer wished to portray Hindu gods/goddesses or concepts in the film, he hoped the depiction would be mirror the one in the scriptures.

The president of Universal Society of Hinduism added if that could not be the case, he would request renaming of the characters and concepts, minus any reference to the word Hindu at all. (ANI)

Depicting Arunachal’s areas in China was a mistake: Google

New Delhi, Aug.8 (ANI): Google, the popular search engine, on Saturday conceded to have erroneously depicted some areas of Arunachal Pradesh as being parts of China following a processing of routine update of new map data on the Google Earth. It stated the mistake would be rectified soon.

“Earlier, this week, as part of routine update to Google Earth, we published new data for the Arunachal Pradesh region that changed the depiction of certain place names in the product. The change was a result of a mistake in our processing of new map data,” a Google spokesperson said in an official statement.

“We are in the process of reverting the data to its previous state and expect the change to be visible in the product shortly. We would like to clarify that this issue did not impact our depiction of international borders,” the statement said.

The spokesperson was reacting after a media report, which highlighted that Google map showed certain areas of Arunachal Pradesh as being parts of China.

The media report had raised suspicion about the search engine being hacked by Chinese considering that Beijing has been laying claim over entire Arunachal Pradesh, which India rejects. (ANI)

Beer ad dropped for revealing women in bikini as drink finishes

Melbourne, Jul 8 (ANI): A beer ad that allowed children to undress bikini-clad women has been pulled down from cyberspace by the advertising standards watchdog.

The Skinny Blonde promotion encouraged users to click on photographs of women, encased in a six-pack, and expose their breasts by increasing the temperature on a digital thermometer.

The online advertisement came only weeks after the beer hit liquor shelves last month, sending health and women’s groups into a flurry of gripes with its depiction of a young blonde girl whose bikini disappears as the bottle empties.

The Advertising Standards Board received numerous complaints about the online ad, which was promptly pulled by the company.

In addition to being labelled “outrageously tasteless”, many complained the promotion was pornographic.

In its ruling, the Advertising Standards Board found the ad failed to restrict children from viewing the content, despite the site requesting users to declare they were over 18 before allowing access to the racy material.

The board also considered the ability to remove the women’s tops was sexualised and in breach of the Advertiser Code of Ethics for failing to treat sex, sexuality and nudity with sensitivity to the relevant audience.

It said the promotion further breached the code for depicting women as commodities and objectifying them to a point that amounted to discrimination.

A spokesman for Skinny Blonde defended the promotion, saying that other alcohol companies had created similar adult campaigns without rebuke.

“The website is clearly a humorous, cheeky and light-hearted portrayal of the essence of the Skinny Blonde brand,” the Herald Sun quoted the spokesman as saying.

“The website is not out of sync with community standards, which accepts the attire worn to beaches by females in Australia and also accepts topless sunbathing and the like as matter of everyday occurrence,” he said.he company further argued that only those who actively sought it out would have accessed the promotion.

“The nature of websites are that they may only be viewed voluntarily,” the spokesman added. (ANI)

Woman recreates Michelangelo’s masterpiece in needlework

London, Jun 26 (ANI): A Canadian lady has managed to create an awe inspiring vision of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling in simple cross-stitch.

Joanna Lopianowski-Roberts, 44, who lives in San Francisco, California, used a British concept by cross-stitch ‘guru’ Dave Peters, called Xstitch Professional, and she spent at least one hour a day for eight years creating it.

“I had stitched a couple of small projects before embarking on the Sistine Chapel and had never really felt any satisfaction when I finished them,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“I wanted something I could sink my teeth into. I couldn’t find anything back in the early 1990s that fit the bill. My husband and I discussed for months different possibilities. At the time, my husband’s brother was living with us and he had a habit of taping pictures from magazines on the walls.

“Rather unglamorously, he had taped a pre-restoration picture of the chapel in the bathroom. It was the most interesting thing to look at while brushing one’s teeth twice a day and finally, one day, during this ritual, it hit me that this was the answer,” she said.

Over the following decade and by committing a total of 3,572 hours, which the IT management consultant and her house-husband Aaron Roberts, 45, clinically timed on a stopwatch, her vision became a reality.

As is the method with cross-stitching Lopianowski-Roberts had to pre-design an outline for each ‘fresco’ on her main canvas and then fill in all of the 45 sections with colour and detail by stitching.

“Starting was definitely the hardest bit,” she said.

“Now that I’ve done it once, it would be easy to do again. However, starting out it was daunting. I struggled with where to start and decided that the central border would work and that would provide an anchor for everything that came after,” she explained.

Lopianowski-Roberts started her work in October 1995, and she had to face several challenges that almost brought her close to giving up on the work.

In order to get the detail right for each individual ‘fresco’, she had to get an individual close up of each piece, which came from several different sources.

She even bought books from Rome to ensure she had an accurate depiction of every part of Michelangelo’s work.

“I lost momentum at some stages,” she recalled.

“I struggled with trying to figure out how to design the next sections. It was really hard and I had a lot of false starts. I even considered stopping.

“After many fitful starts and retries, I decided in late 2001 that if I didn’t set a commitment to myself of stitching an average of one hour every day, I’d never finish.

“The problem with that much stitching ending up being that I kept running out of pattern and had to make a commitment to work on creating the next patterns,” she added.

Her Sistine Chapel, which measures 40in by 80in, is now kept safely at her home.

Her accomplishment has now been documented in a book, In the Footsteps of Michelangelo: The Sistine Chapel Ceiling in Cross Stitch, which acts as a guide for other would-be stitchers to try themselves. (ANI)

‘Slumdog millionaire’s child star loses shanty home in demolition

Mumbai, May 20 (ANI): Shanty home of Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire’s child star Rubina Ali was brought down by the civic authorities in Mumbai, an action which brought her family on road months after gaining a global appreciation.

Rubina’s house in a teeming slum was one of several settlements that were demolished by local authorities in Mumbai.

Rubina was out with her aunt when the civic authority workers and the police landed at their house and asked them to vacate their house. Her father, when tried to protest the demolishing workers, was allegedly beaten up with sticks.

“My father tried to intervene and asked them how they can demolish our houses without even giving us notices, then they beat my father with sticks. My father had to go to the dispensary as his hand was swollen. These people continued demolishing our houses,” Rubina said.

According to the slum dwellers, they had been living there for past many years and the authorities had not given them any prior notice before carrying out the demolition work.

“The government and the politicians all know that poor people live here, the police should not trouble the poor like us… Why do they trouble us? We have been living here for many years,” said Munni Qureshi, Rubina’s mother.

Eight-year-old Rubina played baby Latika, the film’s heroine, in the rags-to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing for love and money on a television game show.

Earlier this year, there was an outcry after pictures emerged of “Slumdog Millionaire’s” child stars living in squalor despite the movie’s box-office success and eight Academy Awards.

The film also sparked controversy for its name, deemed by some to be offensive to slum dwellers, and its treatment of the cast. Its depiction of the lives of poor Indians was dubbed “poverty porn” by sections of the media.

In February, the housing authority of Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, said they would give Rubina Ali and fellow child star Ismail new houses. (ANI)

Hike through the Pyrenees amid sheep, vultures and foggy valleys

Sainte-Engrace, France – You had better not be prone to dizziness, if you cross the Himalayan-style suspension bridge at Holzarte in the French Pyrenees. Under your feet yawns a gorge some 150 metres deep, clearly visible in gaps between the slats. And the bridge sways more violently the closer you come to the middle.

Italian carpenters built the structure in the 1920s, when villages in the Pyrenees were isolated. Today, it serves as a starting point for hikes in Basque country and the former French province of Bearn.

The Basque country is known for berets, and Bearn for béarnaise sauce, but both attributions are false. Berets actually originated in neighbouring Bearn, where shepherds knitted the flat, round caps and then felted, them. They became world famous thanks to the Basque people, though.

As for béarnaise sauce, it was created in Paris and named after Henry IV, king of France, who was born in the Bearn region.

Jean Soust, a hiking guide, told these and other anecdotes during our steady ascent. “There’s hardly another mountain range in Europe where so much biodiversity has been preserved,” he said, pointing to flowers along the trail.

Unlike the Alps, the Pyrenees have been spared mass tourism so far. Two long-distance hiking trails traverse the range, which forms the border between France and Spain.

Our trail led past a powerful waterfall and through a beech forest. Above the timberline, a path used by shepherds wound its way up a mountain pasture. A tolling of bells sounded like the start of Catholic High Mass, but it came from hundreds of sheep. They gorge themselves on herbs that give Pyrenean cheese its flavour.

There was more ringing a little later, this time from sturdy horses with long, shaggy manes with bells around their necks so that their owners could find them more easily.

Numerous gites, guest houses where regional fare is served in the evening, offer travellers a place to spend the night. Didier Constance runs the Ferme de sejour Espondaburu, a gite near the village of Sainte-Engrace.

“Today there’s oeufs (eggs) en cocotte, mutton with chanterelles and sheet cake with fresh blackberries,” Constance announced to his guests. While delicious smells wafted from the kitchen, the guests bided the time until dinner splendidly with glasses of red wine by the fireplace.

The next morning, mist shrouded the valley, a condition typical of the northern, French side of the Pyrenees. It is often warmer and drier on the Spanish side. The murky weather in the mountains has its charm, however, as the landscape looks enchanted in soft light.

When a ray of sunlight managed to slip through the clouds, water droplets clinging to spiders’ webs and blades of grass glittered like crystal glass. Vultures circled overhead.

The Pyrenees also have some surprises for culture lovers, for example Romanesque churches with figures carved into column capitals. In Sainte-Engrace, there is a depiction of the Three Wise Men visiting Mary and the infant Jesus. Mary’s features are those of a well-fed Basque peasant woman.
