Russian town plans to ban heavy-metal for being “satanic”

London, May 21 (ANI): A Russian town is trying to introduce a ban on heavy-metal music because, bizarrely enough, officials believe that it is “satanic” in nature.

Their certitude is based on a Soviet-era psychiatric hospital’s pronouncement, that such music has an “ideologically destructive” effect on young people.

The town called Belogrod has been in the news for introducing fines for public swearing, restricting the number of people on the town”s dance floors, and for waging a campaign against Valentine”s Day.

“The parents of youngsters who attended such events would never forgive us for (allowing) the performances of people interested in satanic ideology,” The Telegraph quoted a town official as saying.

But their latest proposition has met with hostile responses from the denizens who feel the officialdom’s viewpoint is nothing but balderdash aimed at curtailing their freedom.

Oleg Proskokov, a local club owner is not amused, and says he plans to voice his dissent by holding a series of rock concerts, and anyone who tries to disrupt the same should beware because they are likely to end up with a “punch in the face”.

Another detractor of the town’s antiquated policies, Alexander Naumenko, the lead singer in a local rock group, said the campaign reminded him of the “worst aspects of the Soviet system” when Communist party officials sought to tightly control the kind of music people could listen or dance to in public. 15 ft wall to fortify Baghdad

London, May 18 (ANI): Following a spate of suicide bombings in Baghdad the city’s governor has proposed the construction of a massive concrete wall around the city.

The huge city, which is home to approximately five million residents, will need a concrete wall of enormous dimensions. It will span 112 kilometres and will be 15 feet high.

The entry and exit to the city will be regulated at eight gates, which will be the only access points. This is likely to cause immense discomfort to the denizens as it would take at least an hour to gain entry into the city.

“We want to stop the terrorist from sneaking in. With the wall it will be much easier,” the Times quoted Shatha al-Obeidi, an aide to Salah Abdul Razzaq, the governor, as saying.

The authorities are hoping that the fortification will render the city much safer than it has been thus far. Previous measures include setting up of 1,500 checkposts and several miles of cement blast barriers both of which have failed to curb the violence.

These will be dismantled once the wall is completed.

“We have become a city filled with concrete. That will change,” said Al-Obeidi. (ANI)

Taliban threat looms large over poll ready Kandahar

Kandahar, May 3 (ANI) : The Taliban has stepped up its destructive activities in the wake of forthcoming elections in Kandahar. They are targeting common folks and sending death threats to those employed by external parties like foreign NGOs, UN etc.

The deputy provincial police chief narrowly escaped assassination several days after the deputy mayor was shot dead at a mosque while he prayed.

That same day, insurgents detonated a remote-controlled bomb strapped to a donkey near the house of a tribal chief allied with Afghan president Hamid Karzai. Three school children were killed.

Recently, the UN pulled out some of its foreign staff from the city and ordered the rest to stay home. Such a furtive move from the International organisation that had promised peace and prosperity to denizens, has left them feeling disillusioned and betrayed.

Though there are some brave souls like Rangina Hosala a middle aged mother of seven who has decided to contest the elections, she has been at the received death threats via SMS from the Taliban.

She does not venture out of her house without being on guard and it is most likely she will be murdered for defying the Talib diktat.

On Friday, General David Petraeus, the head of the U.S. Central Command, warned Kandahar residents of a violent summer ahead, predicting “horrific” actions by the insurgents.

“We know that there will be more tough moments in the weeks and months ahead,” The Globe and Mail quoted him as saying.

“The Taliban has decided to cripple the government by killing employees. They want to create distance between Afghans and the international forces. If someone is working as an interpreter, they will kill them,” said Ahmed Wali Karzai, head of Kandahar’s provincial council and the Afghan president’s half brother, speaking to The Globe in his Kandahar city guesthouse, on a street closed to most traffic.

NATO has promised to boost troop strength in the area but this has remained unfulfilled so far. (ANI)

Web tool to ensure “free and fair” elections in Afghanistan

London, August 20 (ANI): Thanks to a web tool, citizens of Afghanistan would be able to record incidents of rigging in the country’s electoral process by recording the episodes via text messages.

The second democratic presidential election in Afghanistan under the present constitution of the country is scheduled to be held today.

According to a report by BBC News, Afghanistan’s denizens can report disturbances, defamation and vote tampering, or incidents where everything went reportedly well, through the ‘Alive in Afghanistan’ project, which plots the SMS reports on an online map.

Their reports feature alongside those of full-time Afghan journalists to ensure the election and reporting of it is as “free and fair” as possible.

“We hope to enable people to report on what is going on in the country,” explained Brian Conley, who helped set up the project.

“In the rural areas, there are not going to be monitors, and it is questionable how much international media coverage there will be in these areas,” he said.

“Additional text and video reports will be added by a network of 80 reporters from the Afghan Pajhwok news agency,” he added.

Conley said that he hoped the results would be used by national and international media along with members of the international community.

In addition, they may also be sent to the Electoral Commission if there are reports of tampering or rigging, he said.

The system relies on two established open-source technologies to gather the election reports.

The text messages are collected via a free-platform known as FrontlineSMS, developed by UK programmer Ken Banks.

The system was originally developed for conservationists to keep in touch with communities in national parks in South Africa and allows users to send messages to a central hub.

It has previously been used to monitor elections in Nigeria, and has now been combined with a “crowd-sourced, crisis-mapping” tool known as Ushahidi, which plots the reports on a freely accessible map.

The system was developed in Kenya when violence erupted following the disputed presidential elections between Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga.

Since then, the platform has also been used to document anti-emigrant violence in South Africa and problems in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Conley hopes “hundreds of thousands of people” will use the system, which has been promoted by distributing “thousands of leaflets” and radio reports.

“I am confident that because of Pajhwok’s support we will see a good amount of content coming in,” he said. (ANI)

Afghanistan routs British club cricket team

Toronto, May 2 (ANI): Afghanistan’s cricket team, a squad of former refugees that is rapidly emerging as a power in international cricket, thrashed an English team from the Ditchling cricket club in Sussex.

After 25 overs each, Ditchling scored 138 for 7, while the Afghans, who this year narrowly missed qualifying for the 2011 World Cup finals in South Africa, scored 262 for five.

The team captain, Jamie Theakston, the former Blue Peter presenter turned radio presenter, said it “seemed fair” to let the Afghans win on their home ground, Globe and Mail reported.

Rais Ahmadzai, an Afghan player who grew up in a refugee camp in Pakistan where he played cricket with bats he made himself out of planks, said it was “a historic day”.

“It would have been nice if they could have played on our pitch, but the security it not good enough. This is the first time a British team has come to Afghanistan to play the Afghan team,” he added.

The game was a rematch of one held in Ditchling in 2006, when the Afghan side was supposed to be playing Sussex county’s second eleven, but ended up taking on the well-heeled denizens of a village.

The Afghans have spent the last year touring the world in their attempt to qualify for the World Cup, beating Ireland in South Africa, Nepal in Jersey and Papua New Guinea in Argentina.

By contrast, Ditchling’s only international experience is a biannual contest against the MCC – the Minorca Cricket Club. (ANI)

Vadodara NGO tries to make MPs more accountable

To a stranger, the office of Jyoti Karamchari Mandal might seem like an election campaign office of some party’s candidate.

But, much to their surprise, there are no candidates or star campaigners here, but the office is always abuzz with activists drafting suggestions for those who are preparing to represent people from the state in the 15th Lok Sabha.

Vadodara-based activists Rohit Prajapati, Trupti Shah and Swati Desai, along with volunteers from across 26 cities and towns of Gujarat, are now raising the issue of Members of Parliament (MP) taking unnecessary benefits out of the job while serving the people.

“We will be holding public meetings just like the political parties so that the real

issues come into perspective. But we don’t have any candidate,” said Prajapati, adding that there is a need to amend ‘The Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954′, which gives undue benefits to the MPs.

Not surprisingly, when the activists raised the issue with the leaders from all political parties and affiliations, it was turned down, said the activists, who are now gathering support among the denizens.

“We have Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA)

activist Medha Patkar’s and Right to Information activist Aruna Roy’s support.

Soon we will also hold signature campaigns,” added Prajapati.

Meanwhile, in an interesting suggestion for making the amendments, the activists have said that for the sanction of Leave Travel Allowance (LTA), the MPs should be made to visit marginalised and poor villages and stay with the villagers to understand their problems and then file a report.

Lunar cycle can turn hurricanes into ‘monsters’

Washington, March 6 (ANI): A new study has determined that hurricanes strengthen more often under a new lunar cycle than at any other time.

The moon’s strange influence on Earth and its denizens is legendary. From fertility to suicide, most phenomena attributed to the Moon are almost exclusively superstition.

But, according to a report in Discovery News, Peter Yaukey of the University of New Orleans has found what he thinks is real evidence that the phases of moon drive hurricane behavior.

Storms that occurred in the Atlantic Ocean between 1950 and 2007 were more likely to form right after the new moon.

They also intensified 49 percent more often after a new moon than at any other time in the 29.5-day lunar cycle.

Over the last century, a smattering of scientific research has hinted that the moon may influence rain patterns, thunderstorms and other meteorological events, Yaukey said.

Explanations for why this is are many, but nothing conclusive has been shown.

“I had a lot of skepticism attributed to the moon, and I still do in a sense. It’s not enough to have a pattern in the data. You need to have a mechanism to explain it,” said Yaukey.

There are a range of possibilities.

Just as the moon pulls on Earth’s oceans and creates the tides, it also tugs on the air above it. Lunar atmospheric tides are thought to be weak, but could create favorable conditions for storms to strengthen.

The moon’s gravity may also pull cosmic dust into Earth’s atmosphere in a cyclical fashion, perhaps seeding cloud formation and precipitation.

The most promising explanation is internal tides encouraged by the lunar cycle.

The currents beneath the ocean surface could circulate warm water up underneath a storm, supplying it with the energy it needs to intensify.

But before scientists seek explanations for the connection they must make sure it’s real, according to Gabriel Vecchi of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association in Princeton, New Jersey.

“There’s an easy way to do an independent test for this. Go back and look back at Atlantic hurricane data from 1878-1950 to see if there’s still this pattern,” he said.

Only 13 percent of the world’s hurricanes occur in the Atlantic Ocean. So, if the moon is really influencing hurricanes, the signal should show up in Pacific and Indian Ocean storms, too. (ANI)

Could mythical “sprites” be mysterious UFOs?

Washington, Feb 24 (ANI): Scientists at Tel Aviv University in Israel have discovered mysterious flashes, named “sprites”, zipping across the atmosphere, which may well provide a possible explanation for the sightings of UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects).

In legend, sprites are trolls, elves and other spirits that dance high above our ozone layer.

But, scientists at Tel Aviv University have discovered that some very real “sprites” are zipping across the atmosphere as well, providing a possible explanation for those other legendary denizens of the skies, UFOs.

According to Professor Colin Price, head of the Geophysics and Planetary Sciences Department at Tel Aviv University, thunderstorms are the catalyst for a newly discovered natural phenomenon he calls “sprites.”

He and his colleagues are one of the leading teams in the world studying the phenomenon, and Professor Price leads the study of “winter sprites” ? those that appear only in the northern hemisphere’s winter months.

“Sprites appear above most thunderstorms, but we didn’t see them until recently. They are high in the sky and last for only a fraction of a second,” explained Professor Price.

While there is much debate over the cause or function of these mysterious flashes in the sky, they may explain some bizarre reports of UFO sightings, he added.

Sprites are described as flashes high in the atmosphere, between 35 and 80 miles from the ground, much higher than the 7 to 10 miles where regular lightning bolts usually occur.

“Lightning from the thunderstorm excites the electric field above, producing a flash of light called a sprite,” explained Prof. Price. “We now understand that only a specific type of lightning is the trigger that initiates sprites aloft,” he added.

Though sprites have existed for millions of years, they were first discovered and documented only by accident in 1989 when a researcher studying stars was calibrating a camera pointed at the distant atmosphere where sprites occur.

“Sprites, which only occur in conjunction with thunderstorms, never occur on their own, and are cousins to similar natural phenomenon dubbed by atmospheric electricians as ‘elves’, ‘goblins’ and ‘trolls’,” Prof. Price said.

These flashes are so named because they appear to “dance” in the sky, which may explain some UFO sightings. (ANI)
