We will not let Commonwealth Games suffer: Shiela Dixit

New Delhi, Sep 14 (ANI): A day after the chief of Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Michael Fennel expressed reservations regarding the completion of work and preparations for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit on Monday admitted that there was enough room for improvement and it is being taken care of.

“We are monitoring transport carefully, we are also looking for alternatives. But, there may be things we are unable to complete on time. But, the alternatives are being looked after by our PWD (Public Works Department) Minister, our Transport Minister, our power guys, everyone. So, we will not, from our side, let the Commonwealth games to suffer,” Dixit told media after a cabinet meeting in the national capital.

“We are satisfied, but at the same time we are also nervous. There are many things, which we know, have to be done at this time,” Sheila Dixit Delhi CM said.

Fennel has expressed dissatisfaction over the preparations of the Commonwealth Games and has sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s intervention in the issue.

Dixit also said that hosting the games was a matter of honour for the nation and Delhi would prove competent in hosting it, but admitted some things might not be complete on time.

She informed that Fennel had visited the Thyagraj stadium and was satisfied with the preparations. He, though, was sceptical regarding the availability of power.

“Mike Fennel did pay me a visit about a month back, he spoke to me about just one thing, he said that, we hope power will be available. So, we said, “yes it would be available”. He had come at a time when there was a power crisis in Delhi. Apart from that, he spoke about Thyagraj, saying that we have been around and we are quite satisfied,” said Dixit.

The CGF General Assembly is due to meet in New Delhi early next month to assess the work a year ahead of the Oct 3-14 games. (ANI)

Delhi CM says preparations for Commonwealth Games on schedule

New Delhi, Sep.14 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday rebutted criticism of her government’s efforts on preparations for the Commonwealth Games to be held in the national capitalext year.

Reacting to Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Mike Fennell’s concerns about the organizing committee’s ability to deliver, Dikshit said that she had not received or read Fennell’s letter to Suresh Kalmadi, but was confident that the games preparations are going as per schedule.

Dikshit’s reaction came a day after Fennell sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s intervention to expedite preparations for the 2010 event.

In his letter to the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CWOGC), a furious Fennell asked Kalmadi to arrange a meeting with Prime Minister Singh next month.

“Our main concern relates to the capacity of the Organising Committee to deliver operationally. Preparations for the Games are significantly behind, so much so that the Commonwealth Games Federation is extremely worried about the Organising Committee’s ability to deliver the games to any comparable standard to that of the last two editions of the Games in Manchester and Melbourne,” Fennell wrote in his letter

Fennell claimed that the vast majority of functional areas were considerably behind schedule and that an overhaul in the management culture and operation of the organising committee was needed, else the Games “will fail from an operational perspective”.

“With only a year to run until the Games, I feel I must personally brief the Prime Minister of India on the lack of preparations and to seek his input in developing an appropriate recovery plan. I have asked the Chairman of the Organising Committee to facilitate such a meeting on my return to Delhi in early October for our General Assembly,” he said. (ANI)

Delhi CM Dikshit orders inquiry into school stampede

New Delhi, Sep 10 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday, ordered a high level inquiry into the stampede at a Delhi Government School in East Delhi that killed five students and injured at least 24.

Dikshit and state Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely visited the injured and families of the bereaved at the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital soon after the tragedy was reported.

She announced Rs one lakh as compensation for the bereaved families and Rs 50,000 for those injured and added that the treatment costs would be borne by the Delhi Government.

She described the incident as an unfortunate but refused to comment on negligence by the school authorities.

“We have decided that the Deputy Commissioner of East Delhi will inquire into the incident. We will take every care of the children in hospital,” Dikshit said.

“We greatly regret what happened. This is an accident, which can happen any time. If at all there has been any fault on part of school management, only the inquiry will find out,” she added.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP)(North East Delhi) Surender Singh Yadav said he is yet to ascertain the exact reason for the stampede.

“All the kids were called together. Normally, they have space to stand in the compound, but due to the water and the crowd they were asked to go upstairs. The girls were asked to go up and the boys to come down for exams. The stairway is narrow, only 4.5 ft wide and a stampede resulted. Five suffocated, and 21 are still in hospital,” Joint Commissioner of Police Dharmedra Kumar said.

He also added that rumours of electrocution are still to be verified.Meanwhile, parents of students agitated outside the school campus. (ANI)

Delhi CM expresses shock over student’s torture, death

New Delhi, Apr.17 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit on Friday expressed shock over the torture and death of a 11-year-old student at the hands of her teacher.I am shocked. This should not have happened. This is just not acceptable. I have spoken to the Education Secretary and MCD Commissioner. We will ensure that this is the last incident of its kind,” a television channel quoted Dixit, as saying on Friday.

Dixit’s reaction came shortly after a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against the teacher under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) for the death of 11-year-old Shanno Khan, a class two student of the Delhi Government run ND Primary School.

Shanno died at the Lok Nayak Hospital on Friday more than 24 hours after going into a comatose state following a severe thrashing and torture by her teacher Manju, who is currently absconding.

The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) condemned the torture of Shanno Khan.

“This is a sad and barbaric act,” said Sandhya Bajaj, a member of the NCPCR. Bajaj said the commission is extremely concerned and worried about the increasing number of cases of students being tortured by teachers, but added that it could not move on cases like Shanno’s unless it received a detailed inquiry from the concerned law enforcement and municipal authorities.

Union Minister for of State (Independent Charge) for Women and Child Development, Renuka Chowdhury, said: “What a terrible price to pay for this kind of negligence. Why does a child have to die for some action to be taken.”

She said that she has instructed officials of her ministry to maintain a greater vigilance on schools and other educational institutions accused of carrying out such practices.

Aarti Mehra, the Mayor of Delhi, said that she has ordered a vigilance inquiry into the incident and the sacking of the teacher responsible for the death of Shanno.

The child’s parents have taken the child to the Maulana Azad Medical College for a post-mortem. The Delhi Police is yet to register a case against those involved. A report is being forwarded to Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely for further action.

The incident allegedly occurred when Shanno failed to recite the English alphabet in class. Angered by this, the teacher allegedly hit Shanno’s head against the table and made her stand in the sun for over two hours. Unable to stand the heat, Shanno fainted and was found unconscious by her younger sister, who studies in the same school.

The girl then informed their mother, Rihanna, who rushed Shanno to Maharshi Valmiki Hospital. Shanno’s father, Ayub Khan, who works as a waiter in a catering company, was away in Haryana for work.

“Doctors at Maharshi Valmiki hospital told me that Shanno’s condition was critical and she might not survive,” said Khan.

The 11-year-old was subsequently shifted to the paediatric ICU of the Lok Nayak Hospital on Thursday afternoon.

“She was brought to our hospital in a critical condition. We have examined the child and her blood pressure is very low due to which she remains in a state of shock. Her pulse is very weak too. She is on a ventilator and we can comment on her condition only tomorrow,” said Dr. A. P. Dubey, head of the department, paediatrics, Lok Nayak Hospital.

“The child was admitted in with severe seizure and her condition further deteriorated before she slipped into a coma. She was shifted to LNJP in critical condition,” said Dr. K K Deuri, medical superintendent of Maharshi Valmiki hospital. MCD officials, however, denied that the girl was punished and said she suffered from frequent seizures.

Earlier in the day, the Delhi Government and the Centre promised they would take strict action against those involved in the incident.

The Chairman of the MCD Education Committee Prithiviraj Sahni had earlier said, “The girl has been detained for shortage of attendance. She has been irregular with her classes because of fits. On Wednesday too, she had fits, following which her parents were informed.”

Municipal Commissioner K. S. Mehra has asked the Director of Primary Education to conduct an inquiry and submit a report within three days.

The principal of the school has been identified as Dhanpati, while the teacher has been identified as Manju.

Police said they have confirmed that the child was punished at school. Atul Katiyar, DCP, (Outer), said: “We have confirmed from various sources that the child did face corporal punishment and investigations are on. We will file an FIR only after we receive the medical reports.” (ANI)
