UPDATE 1-Nyrstar H1 EDITDA beats hopes on zinc production

BRUSSELS, July 29 (Reuters) – Belgium’s Nyrstar (NYR.BR), the world’s biggest producer of zinc, reported forecast-beating underlying core profit boosted by higher zinc smelting production and first-time profits from its mining activities.

Over the past year, the group has expanded mining, which offers higher margins than its traditional smelting operations, buying mines or stakes in them in the United States, Peru and Greenland.

Nyrstar said on Thursday zinc production from its own mines was expected to reach 25 percent of zinc metal production by 2012.

Underlying EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) tripled year-on-year to 93 million euros ($121 million). A Reuters poll of 7 banks and brokerages found an average forecast of 89.4 million euros.

With its Balen smelter back to full capacity, Nyrstar said first-half zinc market metal production rose 22 percent year-on-year to 530,000 tonnes.

A severe downturn in the construction and automotive markets at the end of 2008 and in 2009 led to lower demand for zinc and prices as low as some $1,100 per tonne, forcing Nyrstar to halt production at the Balen smelter and cut it at other plants.

Zinc is used to galvanise steel to protect against corrosion.

“Whilst in the short term markets are expected to remain volatile, the fundamental medium to long term outlook for zinc and other resources is strong, Chief Executive Roland Junck said in a statement.”

Zinc futures MZN3 ended 2009 at around $2,580 per tonne, and are currently trading at around $1,955.

A stronger US dollar also helped the group report higher profits. Nyrstar’s earnings are largely denominated in dollars, whereas a substantial part of operating costs are denominated in euros.

Nyrstar said it was on track to cut annual costs by 75 million euros by the end of 2010, compared with 2008 levels. ($1=.7684 euro) (Reporting by Antonia van de Velde, Editing by Ben Deighton)

UPDATE 1-Melexis increases guidance after Q2 beats hopes

BRUSSELS, July 29 (Reuters) – Belgium’s Melexis (MLXS.BR) said it now expects sales to increase by 60 percent for the full-year as it sees increased demand for its microchips, which make cars more environmentally friendly.

The company, which designs and tests chips, said it had experienced its highest ever quarterly sales and its market had yet to reach its peak.

“Ramping up production output so much faster than anticipated was a substantial challenge,” Chief Executive Francoise Chombar said in a statement on Thursday.

Melexis said net income for the second quarter was 12.1 million euros ($15.75 million), beating 8.50 million expected by four analysts polled by Reuters.

It said revenue for the quarter was 55.8 million euros, beating 49.6 million expected in the poll.

When it announced its first quarter results in April it forecast that revenues would rise by over a third. [ID:nLDE63K13Z] (Reporting by Ben Deighton; Editing by Mike Nesbit) ($1=.7684 euro)

UPDATE 1-Explosive 3D projector growth drives Barco Q2

BRUSSELS, July 20 (Reuters) – Belgium’s Barco (BAR.BR) forecast the ‘explosive’ demand for digital cinema projectors, used for showing 3D films, would ensure growth in the second half of the year.

The company, whose displays are used as sports scoreboards, medical imaging systems, flight simulators and at pop concerts, said second-quarter sales rose 16.7 percent year-on-year to 192.2 million euros ($249.4 million), beating 187 million expected in a Reuters poll.

Barco swung to positive operating and net incomes, although the numbers were slightly below expectations.

Its order book at the end of June 2010 stood at 513.3 million euros, more than 50 percent higher year-on-year after almost 300 million euros of new orders in the second quarter.

Order intake for digital cinema projectors was nearly eight times higher than a year earlier.

Chief Executive Eric Van Zele said the orders meant it was probably Barco’s best ever quarter.

“This bodes well for Barco’s performance in the quarters ahead. We are experiencing explosive growth in demand for our digital cinema projectors and are working very hard to deal with the supply chain issues this creates,” he said.

Barco did not repeat its forecast that 2010 sales and EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) would be significantly better than in 2008.

“It’s quite clear we are going to beat that,” a company spokesman said.

The company said that it expected growth momentum to continue in the second half of the year.

Barco made 5.8 million euros in EBIT, compared with a loss of 5.6 million euro in the same period last year, shy of 8.0 million expected in a Reuters poll. ($1=.7706 euro) (Reporting by Ben Deighton)

UPDATE 1-Arseus repeats outlook as drugs unit offsets dental

BRUSSELS, July 14 (Reuters) – Belgian medical equipment and services company Arseus NV (RCUS.BR) reiterated its outlook for 2010 as an increase in pharmacies buying in raw materials offset falls in its dental business.

Its Fagron drug ingredients unit saw second-quarter sales rise 9.2 percent, benefiting from a trend towards bespoke prescribing by doctors which resulted in pharmacies buying in ingredients to prepare treatments for patients.

This helped offset a fall of 0.9 percent in sales at its dentist equipment unit as surgeries in Belgium and France delayed buying in equipment.

Overall, the company said on Wednesday, it made 108 million euros ($136 million) of sales in the second quarter, compared with a forecast for 107 million in a reuters poll.

Arseus repeated its expectation of sales growth of 5-10 percent in 2010. (Reporting by Ben Deighton; Editing by Dan Lalor) ($1 = 0.7939 euro)

D’Ieteren says unit sale may make sense-paper

July 10 (Reuters) – Belgium’s largest car distributor D’Ieteren (IETB.BR) says the sale of its stake in car rental company Avis Europe (AVE.L) “could make sense”, according to Belgian daily De Tijd.

“Many observers say that Avis was chopped in half for unnatural reasons, and it would make sense to merge them again, these observers are right,” the paper’s Saturday edition quoted the company’s chief executive Jean-Pierre Bizet as saying.

D’Ieteren holds a 59.6 percent stake in Avis Europe.

Euronav could benefit from BP spill – paper

June 15 (Reuters) – Belgian crude oil transporter Euronav (EUAV.BR) could end up benefiting from the BP (BP.L) oil spill if the United States needs to transport more oil, its finance chief said, according to Belgian daily De Tijd.

“The image of the oil sector is bad, but for us it can be a good thing,” the paper quoted Hugo De Stoop as saying in a report published on Tuesday.

“The U.S. will probably have to import more oil from overseas areas like the Middle East. This will be done by ship. We can with our large and modern oil tankers play a major role.”

On Monday, BP said it aimed to nearly triple its oil-collecting capacity within a month to a maximum of 80,000 barrels a day in response to a U.S. demand that the company work faster to contain the gushing leak in the Gulf of Mexico. [ID:nN14207756] (Writing by Ben Deighton; Editing by Dan Lalor)

Ash cloud moves toward southeast France – Eurocontrol

The area affected by volcanic ash from Iceland is expected to move northeast on Tuesday afternoon, cutting across the Iberian peninsula and into southeast France, European air traffic agency Eurocontrol said.

The ash cloud was impacting southern and central Spain as well as Portugal including the Canary Islands and Madeira on Tuesday morning, the agency said in a statement.

The areas of high ash concentration on high altitudes in the middle of the North Atlantic were dispersing, however, easing the previously difficult situation for transatlantic flights, Eurocontrol said.
