New blow for tennis star by a UK court

London, Apr 30 (ANI): Tennis player Briton Robert Dee, who had filed a legal action against a British newspaper after it described him as the “world”s worst player”, has lost his case.

Twenty-three-year-old Dee argued that the article was ”offensive” and could blight his potential future career as a tennis coach.

“The newspaper argued that its article was not defamatory when read together with another piece in the same edition. The judge in the High Court agreed with the newspaper,” reports Sky News.

The Daily Telegraph maintained it was justified in publishing the story because the articles were not defamatory and true.

“The claimant is a professional player who did indeed lose 54 consecutive matches in tournaments on the international professional circuit during which he did not win one set,” the newspaper said.

“His losses were in tournaments which are under the jurisdiction of the ITF (International Tennis Federation) and the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals); they are world ranking tournaments and attract world ranking points. His record of consecutive losses was the world record equalling worst-ever run of consecutive losses on the international professional circuit,” it added.

The Judge concluded that Dee could not be justified in his complaint and the facts justified the comment.

Gilmore ready for tour resurgence

Australian world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore says she is no longer taking any competitor lightly, warning she is ready to take the world tour by the throat.

Ahead of the world’s richest women’s tour event, the Beachley Classic at Dee Why, Gilmore is still coming to grips with her shock third round defeat to little-known 15-year-old Sarah Mason in last week’s event in New Zealand.

The world number one admitted she underestimated the wildcard in the heat, saying after a couple of good scores she got too comfortable.

“I was like this is fun, this is another day at the office and then she obviously had other things on hstephanieer mind,” Gilmore said.

It was the first loss in nearly six months for the three-time world champion.

The loss sparked a fire within Gilmore, who can not stand losing and says she will now do whatever it takes to knock over her rivals.

“You can be so dominant and get really relaxed but as soon as you’re in a position where you’re losing, that natural competitive instinct kicks in where I’ve got to win,” she said.

“I’ve got to do whatever it takes to win because I hate losing.”

Before New Zealand, Gilmore had got off to her best ever start to a season, with back-to-back wins at Bells Beach and Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast.

The 22-year-old said the dream start may have caused her to “let her hair down and lose a touch of focus”, but her eyes are firmly set on taking out the $110,000 Beachley Classic which she has not won since 2007.

Gilmore will face world number 15 and Bronte local Jessi Miley-Dyer in the first round as well as one of eight wildcards hand-picked by contest director and seven-time world champion Layne Beachley.

One wildcard vying for that spot is 16-year-old Tyler Wright, who took out the event in 2008 after knocking off Gilmore in a third round showdown.

In what could be an ominous sign for the world champion, Wright said as well as being taller and having her drivers’ licence, she is a better surfer than she was two years ago.

“I see things a little better than what I used to and I’m more mature, although some would say I still act like a five-year-old,” she said.

Wright, the sister of 20-year-old, world tour prodigy Owen, said although she has been focused on “having fun and cruising around” she still wants to try to knock off Gilmore.

Eight wildcards, including Wright and 2009 world junior champion Laura Enever, will fight on Wednesday for that final place in the Beachley Classic.

Three Victorians honoured for bravery

Three Victorians are among a 19 Australians who will receive bravery medals from the Governor-General today.

Adrian Rigby from Red Hill South on the Mornington Peninsula is being honoured for helping to rescue passengers trapped inside a sinking helicopter that crashed off the coast of Western Australia.

Mr Rigby was on a boat nearby when the accident happened.

He says one of the passengers he rescued was an 87-year-old woman.

“There was a failure somewhere within the engine and it started sort of nose-diving towards the water and towards, our boat,” he said.

“As soon as the chopper went in, we ran up in front of the boat and jumped in the water. And funny enough, the first thing my hand went to was her seatbelt.”

Ian Antonoff of Horsham, in western Victoria will be honoured for rescuing his neighbour from a burning house.

“Most people would do the same thing, you know, they wouldn’t think twice about it,” he said.

“I knew the house was well and truly alight, but when you hear someone call for help, you can’t not go back.”

Traralgon woman, Dee-Anne Mohi will also be honoured for rescuing her two sons from a burning house.

Tommy Hilfiger to become dad for fifth time?

London, Feb 26 (ANI): Just two months after tying the knot with his second wife Dee Ocleppo, fashion tycoon Tommy Hilfiger is all set to become a father for the fifth time, according to reports.

Hilfiger, who wed his girlfriend of three years in a private wedding ceremony in December last year, already has four children from a previous marriage.

And now, the New York Post has reported that Ocleppo “is three months pregnant” with the couple’s first child, reports The Daily Express.

The 57-year-old fashion mogul proposed Ocleppo in February last year, and was scheduled to wed in August, but the couple postponed the nuptials.

The designer’s marriage to Susie Hilfiger ended in 2005.

Dee Caffari becomes first woman to sail round the world solo in both directions

Edinburgh, Feb 17 (ANI): Dee Caffari, a British sailor, has become the first woman in history to sail round the world solo in both directions.

According to a report in the Scotsman, after spending 99 days at sea, Dee Caffari crossed the finishing line of the Vendee Globe yacht race in sixth place on February 16.

She subsequently entered the record books as the first female to sail round the world solo in both directions.

“My goal was to set the double world first and I have done it. It’s quite a numb feeling now but here I am – the first woman to sail solo, non-stop both ways around the world. You can’t buy a feeling like this,” said Dee Caffari.

“I’m lost for words, but I’m sure when the adrenalin wears off, I’ll start feeling tired. They say it’s a hard race and when it is hard it is very hard. When I get on dry land, I think the first port of call will be a long hot shower and then it will be time to party,” she added.

Caffari, who in 2006 became the first woman to circumnavigate the globe the “wrong” way – against the tides and currents, said there was “disaster and drama at every turn” during the Vendee race, which is known as the Everest of the Seas.

Caffari’s main problem was the state of her sails, and she was reduced to trying to mend them using skin staples taken from her medical kit after her boat was caught in Force 12 hurricane winds.

“The mainsail constantly caused me concern. You just have to look at it to see what a dreadful state it’s in, but I managed to struggle on. I never let it get the better of me. I had an opportunity here to make history so a disintegrating mainsail wasn’t going to get in my way,” she said.

During the journey, the yachtswoman survived on freeze-dried meals mixed with hot water from a kettle, supplemented by food replacement gel, energy drinks and the occasional piece of fudge.

Sleep on board is taken for only 45 minutes at a time, with only about three to four hours sleep every 24 hours while the only way to get a wash was to use babywipes.

According to Sarah Loughran, Head of Corporate sponsorship at Aviva, Caffari’s backers, “Dee’s performance has been inspirational. She set her sights on the double world first and we’ve backed her all the way.”

“This race has been a testament to her determination, resolve and tenacity,” she said. (ANI)
