French nuns on the run to escape retirement home

(Reuters Life!) – Two French nuns in their eighties are on the run after refusing to accept an order by a superior to put them into a retirement home for sisters.

The octogenarians had been teaching in a school in south-east France for about 30 years when they were told at the start of July they would be uprooted almost 400 kilometers away and placed in an old people’s home.

A third nun, who had also planned to disobey an order for the first time in her life, is recovering in hospital after breaking her hip, Le Parisien reported Sunday.

“At that age you don’t move people about. It kills them,” said the nephew of 89-year-old sister Maurice-Marie, who is in hospital and who was decorated with France’s highest honor in 2009 for her dedication to education and acts of charity.

“These nuns need to be surrounded by their students and the people from the local community instead of medical staff.”

The two nuns took flight on learning of their fate, refusing to leave their home since 1964.

The two are in hiding in a apartment lent to them by a Christian charity, the owner of the flat told the newspaper.

Odile Gaillard, mother superior at the Saint Joseph congregation, said at the end of last week that one of the nuns was extremely disabled and the congregation’s council had made an informed decision after visiting the nuns.

The fate of the nuns is now likely to be decided by a religious court after all sides hired lawyers specializing in canonical law.

“They belong to a religious order and not a cult,” a person close to the nuns told the newspaper. “So, they don’t need to obey groundless and unfair orders.”

Sophomore outing for city U-14 footballers

With just a day left to board flight to Tehran, Iran to take part in the AFC Under-14 Football Festival, both Mohammad Sajid Dhot and Jimmy Singh Maibam are far from the pre-big tournament nervousness syndrome. Exactly a year ago, these two talented players had got the first taste of international tournament in the form of AFC Under-13 Football Festival in Iran- their maiden international outing.

“They both know that they have to go out there and perform well. That’s what they have been doing.

They have worked hard on their games with sincerity and dedication and they have performed to the best of their abilities. That’s why they have earned their second international duties,” said a brimming Surinder Singh, coach, St Stephen’s Football Academy, under whom both these players learned the basics of the game.

After attending the Under-14 football camp at Goa in March. The boys made in into the 30-probable team and then joined six-week camp.

The Indian team will leave to Iran on May 16. The 13-year-old Sajid holds the helm of the defence as a centra-back, while Jimmy plays as a right-back.

Kelly considers ALP Riverina potential

A federal Labor MP says there is potential for the party in the seat of Riverina if a strong candidate can be found.

Glenn Elliott-Rudder from the ALP Riverina Federal Electoral Council does not expect Labor to win.

Mr Elliott-Rudder says preselection has opened and two people have been approached but they are yet to agree to stand.

The Member for Eden Monaro, Mike Kelly, says it would have been a daunting task.

“With Kay [Hull] moving on it does open up potential for all sorts of possibilities. It’s very important in rural and regional areas to have a very good candidate so I do hope they come up with a person that the community there deserve,” he said.

“They’ve had a great servant in Kay Hull and I’m sure that the party’s very much aware of the need to come up with someone like Kay, in terms of their dedication to the community and their ability.”

Sheep sells for world record price of £231,000!

London, August 29 (ANI): A sheep sold for a world record price of 231,000 pounds at the annual Texel ram sale.

Deveronvale Perfection’s sale is said to have broken a record that was set about 20 years ago.

The previous record price for a sheep was 205,000 pounds in Australia in 1989 for a Merino tup.

“A lot of people see these animals as lamb chops, but a lot of effort and dedication goes into developing these flocks, which are at the top of the genetic pile,” the Daily Express quoted John Yates, chief executive of the Texel Sheep Society, as saying.

The newspaper report reveals that the six-month-old Texel tup was bred by Graham Morrison, from Banff, Scotland, and bought by Fraserburgh farmer Jimmy Douglas.

Considering that a Texel earned its owner one million pounds after it was bought for 128,000 pounds in 2004, experts say that Deveronvale Perfection’s purchase is likely to be a good investment.

Yates said: “This was the elite animal which stood out. But the staggering amount that Deveronvale Perfection did go for surprised a lot of people.” (ANI)

Kolkata holds special prayers on Mother Teresa’s 99th birth anniversary

Kolkata, Aug.26 (ANI): Special prayers were held at the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity on Wednesday on the occasion of Mother Teresa’s 99th birth anniversary.

A mass was organised at Mother’s House where visitors joined nuns of the missionary.

Sister M Prema, Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity said everyone prayed and remembered Mother Teresa for her teaching everyone “how to look at the poor and give them the dignity of a child of God.”

“The birth of Mother Teresa to the world has become a great event and a great message for every person. And, her birthday is just giving us another chance to remember what she wanted us to know… She wanted everyone to know that God has created us to love and to be loved,” said M Prema.

Albanian born Mother Teresa made Kolkata her home and dedicated her life to the service of the poor and the destitute.

Mother Teresa was beatified by the Pope in October 2003, paving the way for her canonization, or being declared a saint.

She qualified for beatification after Vatican officials acknowledged that she was responsible for a miracle in which an Indian woman was cured of stomach cancer through her intervention.

Mother Teresa died at the age of 87 on September 5, 1997. She was popularly known as the “Saint of the Gutter” due to her extraordinary love and dedication for poor, homeless and diseased people.

Teresa came to India in 1929 at the age of 18 and took up teaching and became an Indian citizen in 1948.

The nun started working in slums and later set up her Missionaries of Charity, which was approved by the Vatican in 1950.

The organisation now runs more than 500 charity homes in over 100 countries.

Mother Teresa received several national and international awards for the social service that she did during her lifetime. They include the Magsaysay Award in 1962, the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971, the John F. Kennedy International Award in 1971 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. By Shanka Ghosh (ANI)

Dedicated employees have happier home life: Study

Washington, Aug 25 (ANI): Employees who are invigorated and dedicated have a happier home life, according to a new Kansas State University study.

The researchers studied how positive work experiences extend into family life and facilitate family interactions.

They found that employees who are engaged in their work, which includes higher levels of vigour, more dedication and absorption in daily activities, have better moods and more satisfaction at home.

The research team involved Clive Fullagar, professor of psychology; Satoris Culbertson, assistant professor of psychology; and Maura Mills, graduate student in psychology, Manhattan.

“Our research indicated that individuals who were engaged in positive experiences at work and who shared those experiences with significant others perceived themselves as better able to deal with issues at home, became better companions and became more effective overall in the home environment,” Culbertson said.

The researchers tracked 67 extension agents for two-weeks to determine the relationship between daily work engagement and work-to-family facilitation.

The participants responded to two daily surveys, one at the end of their workday and the other immediately before going to bed for the night.

They also completed a separate survey prior to the start of the two-week period and another after the daily data collection had ended.

Culbertson said stress at work and stress at home interact in ways that affect outcomes in both domains.

The study results suggested that engagement is significantly related to daily mood, and mood also is positively correlated with work-family facilitation.

The researchers found that both work engagement and work-to-family facilitation vary considerably from day-to-day.

“Just because an employee might not be invigorated or dedicated to his or her work on a Monday doesn’t mean he or she won’t be engaged on Tuesday or vice versa,” Culbertson said.

“Additionally, one’s work can facilitate things at home to a different extent depending on the day and what has happened on that particular day,” Culbertson added.

The researchers also found that daily work engagement had a positive effect on family life after controlling for workload – heavy or light work hours were not a factor.

Culbertson stressed that engagement refers to positive work involvement rather than more negative forms of job involvement like workaholism and work addiction, which differ in their effects on home lives.

“Work addicts, or workaholics, have been shown to experience higher levels of work-family conflict. On the contrary, our study showed that higher levels of engagement were related to higher levels of work-family facilitation rather than conflict,” Culbertson said.

The research has been presented at the annual conference for Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology in New Orleans. (ANI)

Beckham slams Donovan for questioning his professionalism

Los Angeles, July 13 (ANI): England football star David Beckham has slammed Los Angeles Galaxy captain Landon Donovan for questioning his professionalism and criticising him in public.

Earlier, Donovan had criticised Beckham for leaving his Major League Soccer team and going on a glamorous six-month loan to Italian giants AC Milan.

“In 17 years I have played at some of the biggest clubs in the world and with some of the biggest players in the world, not to mention some of the strongest managers. And not once in those 17 years has there been a question about my professionalism. Me and Landon will talk but it will be a private conversation,” The Sun quoted Beckham, as saying.

“I’m sure if you asked any Galaxy player or any player in this league if they had the chance to finish the season with AC Milan they would do. I have been fortunate to have that experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope to go back,” he added.

Donovan had alleged in his book called ‘The Beckham Experiment’ that despite the fact that Beckham was being paid double than any other player in the league, his level of dedication had dropped since his arrival in July 2007.

Beckham, who returns to training on Monday ahead of Thursday’s clash with New York Red Bulls has stressed his continued commitment to the team.

“I have never said I was leaving. My future is here for the long-term. Before I left I sat down with all the players and told them I was not giving up on Galaxy. Some obviously didn’t believe me. But I’m an honest person and if I didn’t want to be here I’d say,” Beckham said.

“Even if I do go back to Milan, or any another club on loan at the end of the season, I will be back. My family is happy here, we love living here and it’s been hard to be away from them while I was in Italy,” he added. (ANI)

Lily Allen would love to share tent with Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody

London, July 13 (ANI): Lily Allen is making no secret that she would love to get dirty with Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody.

The naughty pop star has confessed that she was a little partial to the clean-cut band at MTV’s Oxegen festival, and would love to share her tent with Gary and the other boys.

“If I had to share a tent with anyone it would be Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol,” the Mirror quoted her as saying while speaking at Ireland’s Punchestown Racecourse.

Breaking into a cheeky cackle, the 24-year-old singer added: “They look like they’d be clean that lot, I don’t know if I’d say the same for myself.”

She revealed that she had bought a yurt – a sort of wooden tent – and the whole band were welcome to pop in any time.

“I’ve just bought a yurt, which I prefer to a normal tent, so there’d be plenty of room for him and the band to join me,” she said.

In fact, Snow Patrol stunned their fans when they stopped mid-set for an impromptu dedication to Lily.

Singer Gary said: “I’m going to sing this song for Lily Allen. She’s a great girl, she’s really something. So this one’s dedicated to her.” (ANI)

Friends and fans ‘devastated’ by Jacko’s sudden death

London, June 26 (ANI): King of Pop Michael Jackson’s sudden death on Thursday has left his friends and fans absolutely devastated.

The 50-year-old singer is said to have died after suffering a heart attack at his home in Los Angeles.

“Like the whole world I’m absolutely devastated and lost for words because everyone expected him to come to London for the concerts,” Sky News quoted his friend Uri Geller, the self-proclaimed psychic, as saying.

“He was in good health, he was rehearsing, dancing , practising for the shows in England. I am shocked. I cannot – I do not want to – believe what I’m hearing or seeing,” Geller added.

Another pal and former PR representative Jonathan Morrish said: “I worked with him for over 25 years. It was a complete privilege.”

“I last saw him when he was last in London, which was for the World Music Awards, and he was his usual, lovely gentlemanly self.

“He was fine (health-wise). You don’t get to the top of the tree like he did without being incredibly strong – mentally and physically,” Morrish added.

Music legend Quincy Jones, who produced Jackson’s legendary “Thriller” album, said: “I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news.

“To this day, the music we created together on Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad is played in every corner of the world and the reason for that is because he had it all…talent, grace, professionalism and dedication.

“He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever.

“I’ve lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him,” Jones added.

Actor Ashton Kutcher has posted a message on his Twitter blog: “RIP. Sending love and light to family and friend but especially his kids.” (ANI)

Astronomers obtain first detection of magnetic field on bright star Vega

Paris, June 24 (ANI): Astronomers, using the NARVAL spectropolarimeter of the Bernard-Lyot telescope in France, have obtained the first detection of a magnetic field on the bright star Vega.

According to an article in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, astronomers clearly observe the magnetically-induced effect in the spectrum of Vega, thereby showing that the star possesses a magnetic field, something unknown so far.

Using the high-sensitivity NARVAL spectropolarimeter installed at the Bernard-Lyot telescope at the Pic du Midi Observatory in France, a team of astronomers detected the effect of a magnetic field (known as the Zeeman effect) in the light emitted by Vega.

Vega is a famous star among amateur and professional astronomers. Located at only 25 light years from Earth in the Lyra constellation, it is the fifth brightest star in the sky. It has been used as a reference star for brightness comparisons.

Vega is twice as massive as the Sun and has only one-tenth its age.

Because it is both bright and nearby, Vega has been often studied but it is still revealing new aspects when it is observed with more powerful instruments.

Vega rotates in less than a day, while the Sun’s rotation period is 27 days.

The intense centrifugal force induced by this rapid rotation flattens its poles and generates temperature variations of more than 1000 degrees Celsius between the polar (warmer) and the equatorial regions of its surface.

Astronomers analyzed the polarization of light emitted by Vega and detected a weak magnetic field at its surface.

This is really not a big surprise because one knows that the charged particle motions inside stars can generate magnetic fields, and this is how solar and terrestrial magnetic fields are produced.

However, for more massive stars than the Sun, such as Vega, theoretical models cannot predict the intensity and the structure of the magnetic field, so that astronomers had no clue to the strength of the signal they were looking for.

After many unsuccessful attempts in past decades, both the high sensitivity of NARVAL and the full dedication of an observing campaign to Vega have made this first detection possible.

he strength of Vega magnetic field is about 50 micro-tesla, which is close to that of the mean field on Earth and on the Sun.

This first observational constraint opens the way to in-depth theoretical studies about the origin of magnetic fields in massive stars.

Astronomers believe that this discovery will be a key step in understanding stellar magnetic fields and their influence on stellar evolution. (ANI)

NASA’s Moon mission successfully completes lunar maneuver

Washington, June 24 (ANI): NASA’s Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS, successfully completed its most significant early mission milestone on June 23 with a lunar swingby and calibration of its science instruments.

The satellite will search for water ice in a permanently shadowed crater at the moon’s south pole.

With the assist of the moon’s gravity, LCROSS and its attached Centaur booster rocket successfully entered into polar Earth orbit at 6:20 a.m. PDT on June 23.

The maneuver puts the spacecraft and Centaur on course for a pair of impacts near the moon’s south pole on October 9.

“The successful completion of the LCROSS swingby proves the science instruments are functioning as expected. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire team,” said Dan Andrews, LCROSS project manager at NASA’s Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California.

“We are elated at the results from the maneuver and eagerly anticipate the impacts in early October,” he added.

During its swing by the moon, the spacecraft’s instruments were turned on and calibrated by scanning three sites on the lunar surface.

These sites were the craters Mendeleev, Goddard C and Giordano Bruno. They were selected because they offer a variety of terrain types, compositions and illumination conditions.

The spacecraft also scanned the lunar horizon to confirm its instruments are aligned in preparation for observing the Centaur’s debris plume.

“Each instrument returned good data that the science team will spend the next few weeks analyzing,” said Anthony Colaprete, LCROSS project scientist at Ames.

“These data will ensure we are as prepared as possible for monitoring and interpreting data we receive during impact,” he added.

LCROSS and its attached Centaur upper stage rocket are now in a long, looping polar orbit around Earth and the moon.

Each orbit will be roughly perpendicular to the moon’s orbit around Earth and take about 37 days to complete.

Before impact, the spacecraft and Centaur will make approximately three orbits.

LCROSS and the Centaur separately will collide with the moon at approximately 7:30 a.m. EDT on October 9, creating a pair of debris plumes that will be analyzed for the presence of water ice or water vapor, hydrocarbons and hydrated materials.

The spacecraft and Centaur are targeted to impact the moon’s south pole near the Cabeus region.

The exact target crater will be identified 30 days before impact, after considering information collected by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and observatories on Earth. (ANI)

Vinai Thummalapally – Obama names Indian American as envoy to Belize

Washington, June 12 President Barack Obama has named Vinai Thummalapally, an Indian-American businessman and a former college friend who raised over $100,000 for his campaign, as ambassador to the central American nation of Belize.

Colorado-based Thummalapally was among the “Top Indian-American Bundlers” – people who gather contributions from many individuals, who are not allowed to contribute more than $2300 for each election, and present the sum to the campaign – during the presdential poll.

“Americans will be fortunate to have these distinguished men and women as their representatives abroad,” Obama said of the ten people who were named envoys Thursday according to a White House announcement.

“Their talent, experience, and dedication will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen America’s partnerships around the world and confront the challenges of the 21st century,” he said. I am grateful for their service and look forward to working with each of them.”

Thummalapally, “a former California State University student who became friendly with Obama in college, remembered him as a model of moderation – jogging in the morning, playing pickup basketball at the gym, hitting the books and socialising,” the New York Times wrote during the presidential campaign.

“If someone passed him a joint, he would take a drag. We’d smoke or have one extra beer, but he would not even do as much as other people on campus,” recounted Thummalapally, Times said. “He was not even close to being a party animal.”

According the the White House announcement, Thummalapally is the president of MAM-A Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of recordable optical discs. Prior to his role at MAM-A Inc., he served as the plant manager for Mitsui Advanced Media Inc., which also manufactures recordable optical discs.

He has served in several other similar roles in his 31-year career, including as General Manager for WEA Manufacturing, as a Managing Partner of Clines Office Products, and as Manufacturing Manager of Disc Manufacturing, Inc.

He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from California State University and completed post graduate courses in Business Administration.

A Gorakhpur boy plays a dutiful son to his blind mother

Gorakhpur, May 27 (ANI): In a unique case of son’s dedication towards his mother, Kailesh Giri Brahamchari, has been carrying his mother on his shoulders and taking her all over the country to visit places of Hindu worship.

He left his house at a young age of 23 years. He has been traveling continuously for over 13 years to accomplish his mother’s desire of undertaking a pilgrimage to the four most prominent abodes of Hindu Gods, spreading across length and breadth of India.
he four abodes are the Badrinath Temple located in Badrinath in Uttarkhand, the Dwarakadheesh Temple in Dwarka, located in Gujarat, the Jagannath Temple in Puri, located in Orissa and Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, located in Tamil Nadu.

In the past 13 years, he has nearly covered the lengths and breadth of entire India traveling from one holy place to the other carrying his blind mother on his shoulders.

Kailesh says that every one should respect their parents and have a loving attitude towards them instead of ill-treating.

He says that it’s his duty to fulfill his mother’s desire of visiting the four abodes in India as his mother undertook the pledge after he had fallen off a tree.

“I am doing this because I had fallen down from the tree. So my mother had taken a pledge to go on a pilgrimage to all the four abodes of Hindu god. So I am helping her fulfill her pledge. Its been 13 years five months and 21 days since I have been traveling. I would be going to Badrinarayan, Dwarka and then to Ujjain from here and would be visiting all the holy places that I will cross on the way,” he said.

Kailesh has been getting a lot of praise from people who have seen him take his mother around. People are happy that even in modern times there exists a son who has devoted his life to his mother.

People do admit candidly that the son’s gesture is indeed rare. He is also being referred to as the modern day ‘Shravan Kumar’.

“We had read in the books about Shravan Kumar, but today I have seen him. We should take inspiration from the way he has been roaming around for the past 13 years carrying his mother on his shoulders. Nowadays, people hit their parents at home. By seeing this, we should get inspired to take care of our father and mother,” said Namrata Singh, a resident.

Shravan Kumar is a character in the great Hindu epic Ramayana who took his disabled parents on his shoulders for a pilgrimage.

The mother-son duo are being sought after everywhere, the people seek the blessings of the mother and give her offerings as well. By Pawan Shah (ANI)

Hughes is ready for anything, even failure

Sydney, May 19 (ANI): Australian opener Phillip Hughes has said that he is ready for anything, even failure.

Currently playing in England’s division two county cricket with Middlesex, Hughes will be the focus during the Ashes for both nations.

“He can’t have a small fall from where he is now. If he scores three ducks in the first two Tests there will be a huge inquiry, and if he scores runs, the English will talk about how stupid they were to let him play county cricket. We expected this, we planned for this – you plan for success,” Hughes’s mentor, Neil D’Costa, said from India last night.

The type of success Hughes is enjoying has not been witnessed since Bradman’s debut tour in 1930. Their figures are eerily similar after five innings: Hughes with 574 runs at an average of 143.5, Bradman with 556 at 185.33.

And then, after failing twice in one-dayers and feeling emotionally and physically drained, Hughes struck a majestic 119 from 112 balls in a limited-overs fixture at Lord’s on Sunday.

The venue, to host the second Ashes Test, will now be a comfortable one for the 20-year-old.

“None of this is happening by luck. To see a 20-year-old kid stop looking at what success is, and start looking at what the processes are … his processes and planning is phenomenal. Every time someone has a plan for Phil, we have already worked on combating that plan and we will have a play against it,” D’Costa said.

“As a professional sportsman, you cannot keep up this level of performance for 10 to 15 years. But when the runs do dry up, it won’t be for a lack of effort or dedication. I have never seen Phil work so hard on his game as he is now,” he said. (ANI)

A Hindu girl eyes world record by penning Quran
