UP Government to start process to reinstate sacked cops

Lucknow, May 25 (ANI): The Mayawati Government today said it will start the process to reinstate the terminated policemen with immediate effect after the Supreme Court ordered to give provisional appointment to sacked policemen recruited during Samajwadi Party’s rule.

“As the Supreme Court has not given a stay to the state government, services of the cops terminated earlier, would be reinstated as per the order issued by a two-judge bench of the Allahabad High Court on December 8 last year,” Special Secretary (Home) D K Gupta told reporters here.

He said that as per the HC order an exercise to segregate tainted policemen from the non-tainted ones would be undertaken and a committee would be constituted for this.

Asked about the exact number of policemen to be reinstated, Gupta said over 18,000 policemen were recruited through 42 recruitment boards in PAC, civil police and wireless in 2007.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court directed the Uttar Pradesh Government to provide provisional appointments to over 22,000 police constables whom Chief Minister Mayawati sacked in 2007.

Those sacked had been appointed by the Mulayam Singh Yadav regime.

The Mayawati government alleged large-scale anomalies in appointments as soon as it came to power in 2007.

Following the Supreme Court order, Mulayam Singh Yadav lashed out at the state government, and demanded Mayawati’s resignation.

“After the Supreme Court’s decision, if Mayawati has some morality, she should immediately resign from the post of Chief Minister,” said Mulayam Singh Yadav. (ANI)

Hindraf leader Uthayakumar fails in Sessions Court bid on sedition charge

Kuala Lumpur, May 7 (ANI): Internal Security Act (ISA) detainee P. Uthayakumar has failed in his bid to get the Sessions Court to strike out his sedition charge on grounds that the consent signed by the Attorney-General was invalid.

Uthayakumar is charged with publishing a letter with seditious contents on the Police Watch Malaysia website (http:// policewatchmalaysia.com) at Menara Mutiara Bangsar, Bangsar between November 15 and December 8, 2007.

The letter dated November 15, 2007 was from Hindraf and addressed to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown at No 10 Downing Street, London, The Star reported.

In rejecting Uthayakumar’s application that the issuance of consent had been done with prejudice, Sessions Court judge Sabariah Othman ruled that the consent signed by the A-G was improper. (ANI)

Malaysian court rejects HINDRAF leader’s plea to drop sedition charge

Kuala Lumpur, May 1 (ANI): A Malaysian Sessions Court has dismissed Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF) legal adviser P. Uthayakumar’s application to drop the sedition charge against him.

Judge Sabariah Othman ruled that counsel M. Manogaran’s contention that personal elements were influencing the charge was baseless.

“It is a serious allegation to say that the attorney-general had personal malice against the accused. The consent to prosecute him was made in an orderly manner by the A-G,” the New Strait Times quoted Judge Othman, as saying.

On December 11, 2007, Uthayakumar was charged with publishing seditious material in a letter written between November 15 and December 8 that year and posted on the Police Watch website.

Earlier Uthayakumar’s other counsel, N. Surendran, told the court that the accused, who is being detained at Kamunting detention centre under the Internal Security Act, had refused to attend proceedings because of the police’s previous treatment of him.

Sabariah ruled that his presence could be exempted as the proceedings were to rule on his oral application. (ANI)

Majority supports ant-smoking law in public places: study

Majority supports ant-smoking law in public places: study The survey conducted by Pasumai Thayaagam, Voluntary Health Association of India and Healis Sekhasaria Institute for Public Health in December showed the public favor to the anti-smoking law imposed by the government.

1026 respondents in the age group of 15-64 in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata were interviewed between December 8 and 23 last year. Most of the study subjects were from the lower and middle income groups.

Football bodies reject WADA “whereabouts” doping rule

Zurich – Football’s governing body FIFA and the European body UEFA on Tuesday said they rejected the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) ‘whereabouts’ rule.

In a statement issued by FIFA the organizations said they rejected the notion of having to inform doping officials of the individual location of team-sport athletes.

The statement said they reached their decision following the joint meeting with the team sports’ federations held in Vienna on December 8 2008, and further to the unanimous decision of the FIFA Executive Committee in Zurich on March 19, and the unanimous decision of the UEFA Executive Committee in Copenhagen on March 24.

“FIFA and UEFA want to stress the fundamental differences between an individual athlete, who trains on his own, on the one hand, and a team-sport athlete, who is present at the stadium six days out of seven, and thus easy to locate, on the other hand,” the statement said.

“FIFA and UEFA therefore oppose the individual ‘whereabouts’ rule, and want to see it replaced by collective location rules, within the scope of the team and within the stadium infrastructure.

“Nevertheless, FIFA and UEFA agree, as an exception, to individual location for players already serving a suspension, or for players injured for a long period of time, as these players do not necessarily participate in the daily life of the club.”

The two bodies said they also rejected the notion that footballers had to give details of their whereabouts during their holidays, in order to respect their private life.

“Finally, FIFA and UEFA want to draw attention to the fact that, both on a political and juridical level, the legality of the lack of respect of the private life of players, a fundamental element of individual liberty, can be questioned.”

The statement said that between 25,000 and 30,000 doping controls were conducted on footballers every year.

“In a spirit of collaboration in the fight against doping, FIFA and UEFA therefore ask WADA to reconsider its position on the ‘whereabouts’ rule,” the statement said. (dpa)

Tara Reid claims to be ‘clean and sober’ after 60-day rehab stint

Washington, Feb 13 (ANI): American actress Tara Reid has claimed that she is “clean and sober” after her 60-day stint in rehab.

Reid had checked into Malibu, California’s Promises clinic on December 8, where she also spent the holidays fighting an alcohol abuse problem.

She now insists that she is free from all.

“Rehab saved my life. Before, I used to think about tomorrow and I hated it. Now I can’t wait,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling In Touch Weekly magazine.

She also revealed that before she entered rehab, she refused to acknowledge the fact that she needed help.

She said that it was only on a trip to the sacred Western Wall in Jerusalem, Israel, that she finally accepted it.

“The hardest thing was walking through the door for the first time (and) finally admitting that I had a problem,” she said.

“I wasn’t drinking any more than my friends, so I didn’t get it. I’d think, ‘Why am I an alcoholic and she isn’t?’ The truth is, some people can drink, and some can’t… I like alcohol but it didn’t like me.

“I numbed my feelings. It was no life to live,” she stated.

Reid now has a new set of sober friends, and is keen to stay single for the recommended 12 months post-rehab.

“My focus is to get back in my career and stay sober, and keep on having a better life one day at a time,” she added. (ANI)
