US ends ban on ties with Indonesian special forces

July 22 (Reuters) – The United States announced on Thursday it was dropping a more than decade-old ban on ties with Indonesia’s special forces, imposed over human rights abuses in the 1990s.

The decision, made public by U.S. officials during a visit by Defense Secretary Robert Gates to Jakarta, was taken after Indonesia took steps requested by Washington including the removal of convicted human rights violators from the organisation’s ranks. UPDATE 1-Falkland Oil finds no oil at Toroa well

LONDON, July 12 (Reuters) – Falkland Oil and Gas Ltd (FOGL.L) said the Toroa F61/5-1 exploration well, offshore the disputed Falkland Islands, failed to find any hydrocarbons and has been plugged and abandoned.

“Whilst the results of the Toroa well are disappointing, it has to be remembered that this is the first well in a previously undrilled frontier basin,” said Chief Executive Tim Bushell.

“We believe that these results have helped to reduce some of the key risks of the plays in the deepwater areas of our licences,” he added.

Oil exploration in the islands has sparked protests from Argentina, which claims the British territory [ID:nN22219606].

In March, British oil explorer Desire Petroleum (DES.L) said it had found poor quality oil in the first well to be drilled in the Falkland Islands for a decade.

Falkland Oil has a 49 percent interest in the Toroa prospect.

Ewan McGregor replaces Johnny Depp in Don Quixote film

London, May 19 (ANI): Ewan McGregor has replaced Johnny Depp in Terry Gilliam’s eccentric movie about Spanish literary hero Don Quixote.

The film was titled ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’ a decade ago and Gilliam casted Depp as time travelling advertising executive Tony Grisoni.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star, however, has been forced to quit because of scheduling conflicts.

Gilliam has now announced that McGregor will star as Grisoni, opposite Robert Duvall as Quixote, reports the Daily Express.

He said, “There”s a lot of colours to Ewan that he”s not been showing recently and it”s time for him to show them again.

“He”s got a great sense of humour and he”s a wonderful actor. He”s wonderfully boyish and can be charming – when he flashes a smile, everybody melts. He wields it like a nuclear bomb!” Gilliam added. (ANI)

Nando”s stripper mum ad most hated in Australia

Melbourne, May 16 (ANI): A commercial for fast food chain Nando”s featuring a topless, pole-dancing mum who serves a chicken dinner to her children is the most complained about Australian advertisement of the decade.

The ad, in which a stripper gyrates topless in front of a male nightclub patron before sitting down to eat Nando”s with her family, prompted 350 complaints to the Advertising Standards Bureau when it first aired in 2007.

The amount of complaints was the most the bureau had received for a commercial since 1998, reports News.com.au

An ad for Mentos Ice chewing gum was the second most complained about commercial of the decade. The ad features a man whose nipples extend after eating a mint.

The Advanced Medical Institute”s billboards and a confronting anti-smoking campaign featuring a woman”s rotting mouth also came up high on the list.

The Advertising Standards Bureau, however, dismissed all complaints about the ads. (ANI)

Australia hopes to face England in World Twenty20 final

Sydney, May 13 (ANI): Australian skipper Michael Clarke has said the team is focused for the semi-final encounter against Pakistan and is hoping to face England in Sunday’s World Twenty20 final, which would be a good start for the Ashes series to be held later in the year.

The two old rivals face tough matches in their semi-finals, with Australia taking on defending champions Pakistan in St Lucia on Friday and England playing Sri Lanka on Thursday.

“I’d look forward to that, yeah. If we beat Pakistan and meet England in the final, it would be a good start to what is going to be a very good and interesting summer back in Australia as well with the Ashes,” Clarke said.

“For me, right now, I’ve got both eyes on Pakistan, and I’ll worry about everything else after that. We didn’t come here to make the semi-finals,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying.

Clarke said his side is more motivated by the fact that the World T20 Cup is Australia’s missing link, having dominated Test cricket for more than a decade and won four one-day international World Cups, including the past three.

“No doubt, it has motivated every player, not just throughout this tournament but throughout the last 12 months,” said Clarke.

“We’ve certainly improved over the last 12 months. But again it’s important that you stay focused. We need to understand that what we’ve done in this tournament so far right now is irrelevant. We need to beat Pakistan in this game on Friday. Beating them a week ago is irrelevant,” he added.

Australia was semi-finalists in the inaugural World T20 in 2007 and first-round losers in 2009, meaning they were not among the eight seeds for the Caribbean event.

“We’ve come into this tournament ranked very low and our performances have been outstanding,” Clarke said. (ANI)

Polanski evidence to remain undisclosed

London, May 11 (ANI): Secret evidence given by the original prosecutor in Roman Polanski”s three-decade old illegal sex case will not be disclosed.

Los Angeles Superior Court judge Peter Espinoza turned down a request from the Rosemary”s Baby director”s lawyers to unseal transcripts.

The judge said the material would be made public only if Polanski returned to the US for a hearing and the retired prosecutor, Roger Gunson, was unavailable to give evidence in person.

“We continue to be bogged down in the question of whether he will ever return,” the Daily Express quoted Judge Espinoza, as saying.

Polanski, 76, pleaded guilty in 1977 to having illegal intercourse with a teenaged girl but fled to France before his sentence could be pronounced.

He was arrested last September in Switzerland and currently remains under house arrest at his chalet in the Swiss resort of Gstaad. (ANI)

Emma Watson says she’s the worst in her acting class

London, May 7 (ANI): Harry Potter star Emma Watson thinks she is the worst student in her acting class.

Watson, who has been playing the role of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, put her career on hold to enrol at Brown University in America, where she also studies European women”s history and Ovid”s Metamorphoses.

And despite performing in Hollywood over the past decade, Watson remains modest about her abilities.

“I think I”m actually the worst person in the class,” the Telegraph quoted her as telling Vanity Fair magazine. (ANI)

Rain brings respite from severe heat in Patna

Patna (Bihar), May 7 (ANI): Tourists and locals in Patna rejoiced on Friday, as rainfall brought respite from the severe heat.

The rainfall, which began this morning, brought relief from the rising temperatures as the showers brought an end to a two month long heat spell.

“It was so hot here that because of the heat all the people were extremely perturbed. But this rain has brought so much relief in this heat,” said Ajay Kumar, a local.

The rain also gave an opportunity to the tourists to leave their hotel rooms and explore the city.

“As it was so hot outside, we preferred staying inside the hotel. But because of the rainfall today, we are enjoying a great deal. I am out with my family for sightseeing thinking that because of the rain the weather will be a little cold,” said Ram Kumar Pardhan, a tourist.

“It is a great relief from the severe heat. It was so hot in Patna that we had planned to leave the city,” he added.

The light thunderstorm and rain has brought down the temperature to 24 degree Celsius.

Patna experienced the hottest April of the past decade with maximum temperature going up to 43.3 degree Celsius.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had earlier ordered to reduce the number of school hours to protect the health of children in the scorching heat. (ANI)

Kylie Minogue says she may never marry

London, May 6 (ANI): Kylie Minogue has denied rumours that she is set to marry her Spanish model boyfriend, admitting that marriage may be “a path I”ll never go down”.

The Aussie superstar has been dating Andres Velencoso Segura, who is almost a decade younger than her, for the past 18 months, and has had to repeatedly deny engagement rumours.

Minogue did express that she would like to start a family with Segura after completing her upcoming album but will probably never be married to anyone.

“Maybe it”s (marriage) a path I”ll never go down. All I know is you can do worse than expect the unexpected,” The Daily Star quoted her as telling Elle magazine in an interview.

But not being married doesn’t make her unhappy at all. In fact, she insists that she is more than content with her current set-up: “I”m in a very happy, romantic place. I thought those days were gone but I”m just doing what I feel.” (ANI)

Shell suit voted worst fashion crime of the ’80s

London, May 5 (ANI): The shell suit has been voted the worst style crime of the Eighties, according to a new poll.

More than three quarters of women quizzed said that the brightly coloured tracksuit should be banned.

It pipped spandex leggings, the perm, day glow make-up and fingerless lace gloves in the poll of fashion disasters from the decade by Galaxy Counters, reports The Daily Express.

The poll also found more than a third of women do not want to see the return of another Eighties monstrosity, stirrup trousers. (ANI)

Tiger Woods’ ‘black guy condom’ pick up joke

New York, May 4 (ANI): Professional golfer Tiger Woods is said to have a joke that he has been using successfully as a pick-up line for at least a decade.

Woods, 34, told the joke in 1997 in front of a GQ reporter, and even though he took flak for it then, he was still using it in 2006 when he hit on exotic dancer Cori Rist.

“What’s this?” the New York Post quoted him as having asked while rubbing the tips of his shoes together.

“A black guy taking off his condom,” he would reply.

Rist, who became one of Woods’ many mistresses, said he then invited her to come up to the apartment of a “superstar ball player”, where he had a room. (ANI)

How the net has made William Shatner richer by $600M

New York, May 04 (ANI): ‘Star Trek’ star William Shatner, who asked for stocks instead of cash when he became pitchman for the Internet travel company Priceline.com in 1997, has made a startling 600 million dollars – thanks to his early decision.

According to The Toronto Sun, Priceline’s shares are currently trading close to 300-dollar apiece. And although the company won’t disclose how many shares Shatner receives, it’s reported to be plenty.

A decade ago during the dot.com bust, the stock was selling for less than 2-dollar a share, reports The New York Post.

It was around the same time Shatner got into the commercials. (ANI)

Centre extends ceasefire agreement with NSCN-K

New Delhi, May 4 (ANI): The Central Government has extended the ceasefire agreement with Naga insurgent group National Socialist Council of Nagaland – Khaplang (NSCN-K) for a period of one year with effect from April 28.

This was decided at a meeting of officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs with the representatives of NSCN-K here on Monday.

During the meeting, senior NSCN-K leaders Kughalu Mulatonu and Wangtin Naga stressed on carrying forward the dialogue to bring a lasting solution to the six-decade old insurgency problem.

Both sides reportedly discussed the current situation in Nagaland and implementation of the ceasefire ground rules.

The rebel leaders also raised the issue of starting separate talks with the Centre since rival National Socialist Council of Nagaland- Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM) is already in talks with the Centre.

The government had entered into a ceasefire with NSCN-K for the first time on April 30, 2001. But it has been extended every year since then. (ANI)

Britain’s biggest bra launched

London, May 3 (ANI): With the rise in number of big-breasted British girls, stores have come out with the biggest bra yet – a size KK cup.

The Bravissimo chain and Debenhams say they had to launch a KK as Brit girls are getting bustier, and it is bigger than the K-cup “windsock” launched by Selfridges department store in March.

Debenhams is ordering extra stocks as the 25 pounds bra, which has 20-inch wide cups, is going so fast.

“Many large sizes we sell regularly were unheard of a decade ago,” the Sun quoted spokeswoman Sharon Webb as saying.

Experts blame pollution or hormone changes.

“KK could soon be outdated,” Sun doctor Carol Cooper added. (ANI)

Women better than men at DIY jobs

London, May 3 (ANI): If a new research is to be believed, then women are now increasingly taking over the conventional male role of doing ”do it yourself” jobs around the home.

Sales of hand tools and decorating material to women have gone up. This is simply because women are tired of waiting for their other halves to fix things. They would rather help themselves than wait.

A study by Tesco concluded that out of every 3 women, 2 (60 per cent) are now shopping for DIY items – three times as many as a decade ago (20 per cent).

“It is now a case of I know a woman who can, as more and more women pick up a screwdriver,” the Telegraph quoted Fabio Perrotta, manager of Tesco hardware, as saying.

Spokeswoman Gail McGibbon, added: “In the last 12 months sales of pink ladies garden secateurs, pink handled trowels, pink garden gloves and pink kneeler pads are up as much as 170 per cent.

“The trend shows women are doing an increasing number of small jobs around the garden because they are fed of waiting for their other halves to get off the sofa.” (ANI)
