Phulan Rani, the ageless painter of Punjab

Amritsar, Sep.11 (ANI): Defying her age, octogenarian Phulan Rani today stands as a tall figure that inspires the youth by her love for painting and deep urge to give creative expressions to her thoughts and observations of the world around her.

A resident of Amritsar, Phulan Rani works in both oils and water colour and paints realistic landscapes and portraits of local leaders.

“I was born on Dec 12, 1923 and have seen various ups and downs during my life span. I have been inspired to paint from all good things in life and the thoughts and the preaching of the gurus that I have heard,” said Phulan Rani, the painter. She is a nature lover by heart.

“Nature is like an open book as we can see many beautiful things through it. Like honeybees collecting nectar from the flowers and then constructing hives. It inspires an artist to paint. The inspiration also comes from beautiful faces, flowers, landscapes and the teachings of the gurus,” she says.

Phulan Rani is full of pride when she realizes how her work has reached in different parts of the world.

“A person can be successful in any sort of work if he or she gets full support from his life partner and children. You can imagine the work done by me through the paintings hanging on the walls of my house. I have sold a number of paintings, but I had enough time to paint replicas of those sold paintings to keep at home. My paintings have reached across the world,” says Phulan.

The sixth President of India, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, had released Phulan Rani’s book of ‘Painting visions of beauty’ in 1981. By Ravinder Singh Robin(ANI)

Muralitharan to play Twenty20 cricket for Queensland Bushrangers

Melbourne, Aug.27 (ANI): Champion Sri Lankan off-spinner Muthiah Muralitharan will join West Indian Dwayne Bravo as the Queensland Bushranger’s second international recruit for the national Twenty20 competition.

While both players are not eligible to play in October’s Champions League international Twenty20 tournament and are committed only for this season’s month-long Big Bash, they would be eligible to turn out at next year’s Champions League if the team qualifies, reports Fox Sports.

In addition, the 37-year-old off-spinner could reshape Victoria’s Twenty20 bowling attack, which in recent seasons has been well-served by the likes of pacers Dirk Nannes, Shane Harwood and Clint McKay.

“It could be an all-spin attack, because really we’ve got [Brad] Hodge and [David] Hussey, [Cameron] White, Murali and also [Jon] Holland and [Bryce] McGain,” coach Greg Shipperd said.

The Bushrangers have also overcome the loss of long-time major sponsor Carlton and United Breweries with a three-year agreement with Dubai-focused property developer Dheeraj and East Coast (DEC). (ANI)

Now, Berlusconi in a mess over ‘New Year’s Eve party for 50 young women’

London, May 30 (ANI): Silvio Berlusconi, apparently, has a thing for controversies. Speculations regarding the Italian prime minister’s relationship with an 18-year-old aspiring model are still on, and now, a new scandal has popped up.

Yesterday, Berlusconi was forced to deny that he had held a 2007 New Year’s Eve party for 50 young women, reports The Telegraph.

The denial followed a six-page article by the respected weekly news magazine L’Espresso.

The mag had printed an article under the headline “The harem of Berlusconi” as it reported details of the alleged party at his luxury Sardinian villa.

The magazine claimed that 50 young women were flown to Villa Certosa for a “political course” which involved “singing, dancing, shopping and lunch”.

According to L’Espresso, the party on Dec 31 was described as a “dream out of Pretty Woman” with the “most powerful and richest man in Italy entertaining a group of actresses, models and wannabes”.

Hitting back at the article, Berlusconi’s lawyer Nicolo Ghedini said: “The article is completely without foundation. It is fantasy and the sources are all anonymous.”

Noemi’s previously unknown relationship with Berlusconi came into the spotlight last month after his wife, Veronica Lario, said one of the reasons for seeking a divorce was that she could “not stay with a man who frequents minors”. (ANI)

Susan Boyle set for jungle show ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here’

London, May 4 (ANI): Britain’s Got Talent’s singing sensation Susan Boyle has been lined up for an appearance on the jungle show ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here’ later this year.

ITV bosses are looking into capitalising on the 48-year-old Scottish singer’s worldwide fame, and she has been chosen for a starring role in the hit reality show after hosts Ant and Dec, both 33, put her name forward.

Bosses reckon Boyle would be perfect in the Aussie Outback and would pull in bumper ratings as millions of her fans tune in to watch her antics.

And her global success, particularly in the States, could also widen the show’s appeal and attract millions of viewers in America and Australia.

“Susan would be TV gold if she went in the jungle. She’s the biggest celebrity of the year so far,” the Daily Star quoted a show source as saying.

“I don’t think there’s anyone in the country who doesn’t know who she is.

“Having her in the jungle would be a massive boost, not to mention helping us attract audiences from around the world.

“Every one of those millions of people who logged on to the web to see her would go to our website to see what she’s doing. If we sold advertising on the clips it’d be worth a fortune,” the source stated.

But it is not just the prospect of millions in revenue that is making Boyle such a popular choice for a spot, as telly bosses think she would be a brilliant contestant in the outback.

“Susan has got a great sense of humour which would be great to have in the jungle,” the source said.

“There’s such a fascination in what she’s like and how she acts that I think not only would she do well, she could actually win.

“The British public love someone who is bonkers and funny. I think they would easily fall in love with her straight away,” the source added. (ANI)

Now, Paswan holds Congress culpable in Babri demolition

Patna, April 20 (IANS) Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan Monday defended his Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) colleague Lalu Prasad’s statement that both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress were responsible for the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid.

‘What wrong has he (Lalu Prasad) said,’ Paswan asked.

Taking a further dig at the Congress, which leads the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) of which both Lalu Prasad and Paswan are key members, Paswan said about the political situation in his constituency Hajipur: ‘What is the Congress doing? When they know that they cannot garner even 2,000 votes in Hajipur, why did they put up a candidate against me? What strength are they trying to prove?’

The RJD and the LJP fell out with the Congress over the issue of seat sharing in Bihar — a miffed Congress went ahead to contest Bihar on its own while the RJD and the LJP tied up with the Samajwadi Party to form an electoral alliance for the 120 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Widening the gulf with the Congress, Lalu Prasad had said April 17 in Darbhanga in Bihar that the Congress was responsible for the demolition of the Babri mosque.

‘The Congress failed to protect the Babri Masjid as it did nothing to prevent it. Not only the BJP, the Congress is also equally responsible for the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.’

A large mob converged in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh and destroyed the 16th century mosque Dec 6, 1992, claiming it was built at the very place where Lord Ram was born. The Narasimha Rao led-Congress government was then in power in New Delhi while Kalyan Singh presided over a BJP government in Lucknow.

While Congress wondered why Lalu Prasad had kept quiet about it so long, the BJP said the Congress, the RJD and the Samajwadi Party were playing politics on the Ayodhya issue to cater to a particular vote bank.

Top ETA leader held in France

Paris, Apil 20 (EFE) A top leader of the Basque terrorist group (ETA) has been arrested by security forces in southeastern France, authorities said Sunday.

Jurdan Martitegui Lizaso, who is believed to be the current leader of the Spanish terrorist group, was detained Saturday along with two other people he was meeting at a church near southeastern French city of Perpinan.

French and Spanish police had launched a joint operation to nab Lizaso, who had been sought by authorities since 2006.

According to Spanish Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, Martitegui was the head of ETA’s military wing.

‘In all likelihood, we have the chief of ETA’s military wing,’ Rubalcaba said, adding that whether the suspect was ETA’s top leader was still ‘something up for discussion’.

Martitegui, who was considered extremely violent, is known as ‘the Giant’ because of his height (6 feet and 5 inches). The suspect will be taken to Paris for questioning, officials said.

ETA, an acronym for Homeland and Freedom in Basque language, has killed more than 850 people since taking up arms in 1968 to seek a Basque nation comprising parts of northern Spain and southern France.

The terrorist group has carried out nearly two dozen attacks since June 5, 2007, when it ended its unilateral ceasefire with the Spanish government.

The terrorist group had declared a ‘permanent ceasefire’ in March 2006 in an apparent attempt to negotiate peace with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s government.

Most observers, however, regarded the Dec 30, 2006, attack at the Madrid airport as marking the end of the terrorist group’s ceasefire

Hasina government tackled mutiny, economy well’

Dhaka, April 16 (IANS) Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government, which completed 100 days in office, has done well on managing the economy and in tackling the border guard troopers’ mutiny, a survey said Thursday.

However, it fared badly in curbing indiscipline and corruption among its own cadres, said an opinion poll conducted by The Daily Star newspaper along with Nielsen.

The survey reveals that rural support for the government is stronger than its urban popularity. ‘But in the balance, the government drew an overall performance (of) satisfaction from the respondents,’ the newspaper reported.

The survey found that 71 percent of the respondents feel that the country was moving in the right direction while 17 percent said it has been going in the wrong direction since the new government took over. Rural and female respondents voted more favourably.

Hasina took office in January after sweeping the Dec 29 poll. She heads a government with 31 ministers, 25 of whom are newcomers. The survey said many respondents could not name many of the ministers.

The survey touched issues like economic performance, inflation, administration and judiciary, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), law and order, corruption, and best performing ministers.

The survey was conducted between April 9 and April 12 among 2,520 respondents, all above 18 years of age. The interviews were taken at 180 spots in 44 districts.

Asked to rate the government’s 100-day performance, 62 percent said they are ‘satisfied’, 19 percent ‘very much satisfied’, while only 15 percent said they were ‘not satisfied’.

Such expression of high satisfaction cut across the political divide, the poll shows.

About the economy, 59 percent feel the government is doing well while 13 percent feel negatively, and 24 percent think the economy is not doing so well.

The government’s performance has generated a mixed response.

New Age newspaper said in an editorial Thursday: ‘….the signals that the Awami League-led government has sent across in its first 100 days could very well make one wonder if a change for the worse is the only change that lies ahead.’

The newspaper criticised the Hasina government for failing to try those responsible for alleged wrongdoings in the two-year caretaker government (2007-08).

On the Feb 25-26 mutiny by Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) troopers in which 55 Bangladesh Army officers were killed, the editorial said: ‘While we believe a military solution could have resulted in more loss of lives, its ultimate success will depend on the ongoing investigations being credible, the reports and recommendations made public and the subsequent prosecution transparent and within the ambit of law.’

Malaysia Airlines plans airline buy-report

KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 (Reuters) – Malaysia Airlines (MASM.KL) (MAS) is looking at an airline purchase as it has a cash surplus, a local newspaper said on Thursday, citing a top company official.

“People always ask why we keep so much cash. We are positioning ourselves so that when the chance comes, we will be ready to grab it,” MAS Managing Director Idris Jala told the Star newspaper.

“In the next two or three years, if the economic downturn persists, we won’t even have to go looking. Opportunity will present itself to us.”

The company had 3.57 billion ringgit ($990.3 million) in cash as of Dec. 31, the paper said.

A call to MAS was not answered immediately.

MAS also confirmed there were no more discussions with Australia’s Qantas Airways Ltd (QAN.AX) about a maintenance venture after a memorandum of understanding expired recently, the paper said.

The paper said MAS was targeting 700 million ringgit of cost cuts this year. ($1=3.605 Malaysian Ringgit) (Reporting by Varsha Tickoo; Editing by Dhara Ranasinghe)

Seized credit union low-balled loss by $500 mln-NCUA

WASHINGTON, April 10 (Reuters) – A U.S. regulatory analysis shows that senior managers at a major corporate credit union seized last month were preparing to report a credit loss significantly below what an external analysis had revealed, the National Credit Union Administration said on Friday.

The NCUA said Western Corporate (WesCorp) Federal Credit Union’s own external analysis resulted in a credit loss estimate more than $500 million greater than WesCorp’s internal estimates.

Senior managers at WesCorp were prepared to report an impairment figure for certain securities as of Dec. 31 that was based on the lower internal analysis estimate, the NCUA said.

The credit union regulator seized WesCorp and U.S. Central Federal Credit Union last month after stress tests revealed that losses on their soured mortgage-related investments had reached a critical stage. (Reporting by Karey Wutkowski; Editing by John Picinich)

China end-March FX reserves hit $1.9537 trln -PBOC

BEIJING/SHANGHAI, April 11 (Reuters) – China’s foreign
exchange reserves, the world’s largest, rose by about $7.7
billion in the first quarter to $1.9537 trillion at the end of
March, the central bank said on Saturday.

The figure was slightly below the median forecast of $1.955
trillion in a Reuters poll of 10 economists. [ID:nPEK193871]

For all of 2008, the foreign exchange reserves rose by
$417.8 billion, compared with increases of $461.9 billion in
2007, $247.3 billion in 2006 and $209 billion in 2005.

China’s reserves have ballooned as the central bank, in
order to hold down the yuan, has bought most of the dollars
generated by a large trade surplus, foreign direct investment
and periodic inflows of speculative capital.

The inflows have slowed in recent quarters as the global
economic slowdown has hit trade and investment flows.

Pakistan’s parliament moves to implement governance agenda

Islamabad, April 10 (IANS) Pakistan’s political equations are set for a sea-change with the lower house of parliament Friday moving to implement the governance agenda, which envisages power being centred in the prime minister’s office, that the ruling party and its now estranged partner had agreed on before elections last year.

The National Assembly Friday unanimously approved a resolution to form a committee for implementing the Charter of Democracy (CoD), with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani saying the nation and political forces should unite to resolve issues.

‘We will ensure the supremacy of parliament, will restore constitution of 1973 in its original form and eliminate amendments made during dictatorship,’ Gilani maintained.

Once this happens, key powers will be transferred back to the prime minister’s office from the presidency, which will then play only a ceremonial role.

These include the powers to appoint the service chiefs and the Supreme Court chief justice and also to dismiss the federal and provincial governments and dissolve the National Assembly and the provincial legislatures.

More importantly, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which had quit the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-led federal coalition over the non-implementation of the CoD, could well return to the government.

The National Assembly resolution came a day after President Asif Zardari Thursday urged Gilani to ‘take appropriate steps to fulfill the promise made in my address to parliament by urgently initiating the process for implementing the Charter of Democracy (CoD) and repeal of the 17th Amendment’.

‘How best to implement the CoD is, of course, the prerogative of parliament to decide,’ Zardari said in a letter to Gilani, his first since assuming office.

Describing the charter as ‘our compass in the rough sea and a guide to the future’, Zardari said it was ‘the goal of our political endeavour and a beacon of light towards which we should seek to move’.

Former prime ministers Benzair Bhutto of the PPP and Nawaz Sharif of the PML-N had agreed on the CoD in October 2007 ahead of the general elections originally scheduled for January 2008.

Bhutto’s assassination Dec 27, 2007 pushed the polls back by a month and saw the PPP and the PML-N posting a one-two finish.

The two parties, along with smaller regional groupings formed a coalition but walked out when Zardari reneged on the promises made in the governance agenda.

One of these related to restoring Supreme Court chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and the other apex and high court judges then president Pervez Musharraf had sacked after imposing an emergency Nov 3, 2007.

The other related to the repeal of 17th constitutional amendment that Musharraf had pushed through in 2003 stripping the prime minister’s office of its key powers.

The judges were restored last month after Nawaz Sharif led a high-voltage lawyers’ ‘long march’ to Islamabad.

The protest also saw Gilani emerging with the aura of a statesman at the cost of Zardari, who gave in on the issue only after the prime minister and army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kiyani read him the riot act.

On March 22, the day Chaudhry and the other sacked judges were reinstated, Gilani and Sharif met for lunch at the latter’s country villa on the outskirts of Lahore.

Thereafter, Gilani formally invited the PML-N to rejoin the government, but Sharif has said this would not happen ‘for the moment’.

Bolivian Congress approves controversial vote law

Bolivia’s Congress approved on Thursday the “overall content” of an electoral law hours after President Evo Morales went on hunger strike to protest at opposition lawmakers’ efforts to block the bill.

Lawmakers must still vote on the details of the election reform law, which is seen helping the leftist president in a general election in December by assigning more seats to poor, rural areas where he is popular.

Morales, the Andean nation’s first indigenous president, started a hunger strike earlier on Thursday, accusing his rightist opponents of blocking the proposal.

“Faced with the negligence of a bunch of neoliberal lawmakers, we have no choice but to take this step (hunger strike) … they don’t want to pass a law that guarantees the implementation of the constitution,” he told reporters.

Morales’ Movement Toward Socialism, or MAS, party controls the lower house in the natural gas-rich country, but right-wing parties have used their Senate majority to block dozens of government-proposed reforms since Morales took office in 2006.

Lawmakers traded insults during a heated debate and some opposition members called Morales government “totalitarian”.

However, a majority eventually voted to approve the general outline of the law. Further debate and another vote to pass the details of the measure were set to continue late Thursday.

Congress still has to vote on how many seats will be reserved for minority indigenous groups in the legislature, whether or not the electoral register will be updated before the poll and if Bolivian expatriates will be allowed to vote.

INDIGENOUS RIGHTS

A new constitution designed to give more power and rights to the country’s indigenous majority was approved by more than 60 percent of voters in January.

It calls for Congress to approve an electoral law ratifying Dec. 6 as the date for a general election.

The opposition had rejected the bill because it gives 14 seats to minority indigenous groups which, they say, amounts to handing them to Morales, since he champions indigenous rights.

They also demand a new electoral register saying the current census is unreliable.

Across the landlocked country, hundreds of members of indigenous groups and trade unions had joined the hunger strike in support of Morales, local media reported.

Bolivia, the poorest country in South America, has been racked by decades of political upheaval. The opposition is split ahead of December’s vote, when Morales will stand for re-election and 166 lawmakers will be chosen.

According to a poll published in El Deber newspaper this week, some 54 percent of Bolivians think Morales will be reelected, far ahead of his closest contender former President Carlos Mesa with 6 percent.

Morales, a critic of Washington and an ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, won sweeping victories in a recall vote in August and the constitutional referendum in January, showing strong backing for his leftist and pro-indigenous policies.

TIMELINE – Iran’s nuclear programme

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will inaugurate the country’s first nuclear fuel production complex later on Thursday, an Iranian official told Reuters.

Iran said earlier it would review an offer of talks on its nuclear programme from the United States and five other world powers.

Details of Iran’s nuclear programme first emerged in Aug. 2002 when the exiled opposition National Council of Resistance of Iran reported the existence of a uranium enrichment facility at Natanz and a heavy water plant at Arak. Here is a timeline of Iran and its nuclear programme in the last two years.

April 18, 2007 – IAEA says Iran has started up more than 1,300 centrifuge machines in an accelerating campaign to lay a basis for “industrial scale” enrichment in the Natanz complex.

Nov. 2 – Six powers — Britain, France, Germany, the United States, Russia and China — agree to push ahead with more sanctions.

Dec. 3 – A U.S. National Intelligence Estimate says Iran put its bid to build a nuclear bomb on hold in 2003 and it remains on hold. Two days later Ahmadinejad declares victory over the United States and IAEA head Mohamed ElBaradei says Iran has been “somewhat vindicated”.

Dec. 11 – The opposition NCRI says Iran did shut down its programme in 2003 but restarted it a year later. The group says recent U.S. analysis gives the wrong impression.

Jan. 11-12, 2008 – ElBaradei makes a rare visit to Tehran to push for swifter cooperation in wrapping up the IAEA inquiry.

March 3 – U.N. Security Council adopts a third sanctions resolution targeted at Iran’s nuclear programme.

July 19 – Iranian officials rule out any freeze in uranium enrichment during talks in Geneva on the programme, attended for the first time by a senior U.S. diplomat.

Aug. 2 – An informal deadline lapses for Iran to respond to an offer from the United States, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia for talks on its disputed nuclear programme.

Aug. 5 – Iran delivers a letter to world powers but gives no concrete reply to a demand to freeze its nuclear activity, a defiant step the U.S. says amounts to obfuscation. The next day the U.S. and Britain say major powers agreed to consider more U.N. sanctions.

Sept. 15 – The IAEA says Iran has blocked a U.N. inquiry into whether it researched ways to make a nuclear bomb as Britain said it would push hard for tougher sanctions.

Nov. 26 -Iran says it is now running 5,000 uranium enrichment centrifuges, signalling an expansion of work the West fears is aimed at making nuclear weapons.

– This is higher than the 3,800 such machines the IAEA cited in a Nov. 19 report, which was based on a visit by its inspectors to Iran’s Natanz enrichment plant on Nov. 7.

Feb. 5, 2009 – Russia says it plans to start up a nuclear reactor at the Bushehr plant by the end of 2009.

Feb. 19 – A new IAEA report shows a significant increase in Iran’s reported stockpile of low-enriched uranium since November to 1,010 kg, enough, some physicists say, for possible conversion into high-enriched uranium for one bomb.

Feb. 25 – Iran denies it has slowed down its nuclear activities and says it plans to install 50,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium over the next five years.

March 20 – New U.S. President Barack Obama calls for “engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect”. Iran cautiously welcomes the overture, saying it wanted to see “practical steps”.

April 8 – The U.S. takes another tentative step toward better ties with Iran to become a full participant in nuclear talks with Tehran, but it shows no sign of a detente.

April 9 – Iran says Ahmadinejad will inaugurate the country’s first nuclear fuel production complex.

Kandahar, Dec 13 show who’s weak’

SONIA GANDHI hit back at the BJP for calling Manmohan Singh a “weak Prime Minister”, saying they had insulted the nation. The Congress president, in her first response to the BJP’s repeated attack, lambasted the party and said the Congress judged the strength and weakness of a leader by his work and not merely by words.

“The Prime Minister represents the entire country and not a particular political party. Different parties project their prime ministerial candidates, but after the elections, the PM belongs to all,” she said.

“The BJP has insulted the nation by its repeated derogatory remarks against the Prime Minister out of frustration.” Sonia addressed a series of election rallies across eastern Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

“Our definition of a strong leader is different. In our view, a strong leader is one who does not talk big, but his work should be big enough to speak for itself,” she said.

Referring to the attack by BJP leaders, led by L.K. Advani and Narendra Modi, she said: “We are aware of the strength of these leaders who have used insulting language against the prime minister. When they were the home minister and deputy PM, our Parliament was attacked and their government escorted the terrorists out of the country like guests.

” Sonia said Singh proved his efficiency by forcing Pakistan to admit its role in the 26/11 attacks, by the successful use of diplomacy. “On the other hand, those talking big now, could not do anything when the Parliament attack took place.

” She introduced a fresh element in her rally where she had a brief interactive session with the crowd. Sonia asked the questions – which party has fought poverty? Who has maintained communal harmony in the country? – and the crowd replied in a chorus.

Though she launched a strong attack on the BJP, Sonia did not name the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party in her speech. The Congress president’s move to spare the two is being viewed as a tactical ploy to keep post-poll options open.

UN team arrives for Bhutto killing probe

Islamabad, April 7 (IANS) A UN team has arrived here to lay the ground for a probe by the world body into the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

The six-member team is headed by Mark Quarterman. It is likely to visit the spot in the adjacent garrison town of Rawalpindi where Bhutto was killed Dec 27, 2007 in a gun and bomb attack as she left a political rally.

The team will also meet officials of the police and other law enforcement agencies.

Pakistan had earlier this year sought a UN probe into Bhuttto’s killing after its own investigations and one by Scotland Yard failed to make headway.

This is largely because the spot where Bhutto was killed was hosed down soon after, destroying whatever evidence that could have been gathered.

Baitullah Mehsud, who leads the Pakistani Taliban, is one of those suspected of having a hand in Bhutto’s killing.
