Pak inks 220-million-dollar satellite deal with China

Islamabad, Sep. 19 (ANI): Pakistan has signed an agreement with China to provide a 220-million-dollar financial grant to help the Islamic country launch a communication satellite.

The operational life of Pakistan’s existing satellite PAKSAT-1 will be over in November 2011.

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Luo Zhaohui and Pakistan’s Economic Affairs Secretary Farrukh Qayyum signed the contract.

“China has agreed to fund the project through a soft loan with low mark up for a period of 20 years,” the Daily Times quoted Qayyum, as saying.

The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Organisation (SUPARCO) and the China Great Wall Industry Corporation have agreed to develop the new satellite PAKSAT-1R, which would replace PAKSAT-1 in September 2011, he added.

The satellite will support all conventional and modern fixed satellite service (FSS) applications.

The satellite will have 30 transponders, 18 in the Ku-band and 12 in C-band (ANI)

Gilani rejects inking safe passage deal for Musharraf

Islamabad, Sep.19 (ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has denied inking any ‘safe exit’ deal to facilitate former President General Pervez Musharraf’s safe passage from the country after he stepped down from the Presidency.

In an interview to a private television channel, Gilani said: “If there had been such a deal, it would have surfaced by now, as the media is very vibrant today.”

Gilani also said would be wrong to say that Musharraf has been ‘pardoned’, as neither he has been convicted by the court of law nor been ‘indemnified by parliament’.

When asked whether there is any possibility of invoking the Article Six of the Constitution against Musharraf, Gilani reiterated that he was willing to do it if parliament passed a unanimous resolution.

“I am for it. We must create history. But at the same time, we should not rock the boat. If there is a unanimous resolution, the whole nation would be together,” The Daily Times quoted Gilani, as saying.

Commenting on the Baloch issue, he said the government is preparing a package for the insurgency hit province which would include constitutional, administrative and economic reforms. (ANI)

World’s longest running soap comes to an end

London, September 19 (ANI): The world’s longest running soap opera ‘Guiding Light’, spanning seven-decades and 15,700 episodes, has come to an end.

The American TV programme, which started as a 15-minute daily drama on NBC radio in 1937 before moving to television in 1952, was screened for the last time after a decline in the ratings in recent years.

CBS Senior Vice President Barbara Bloom said the show, that bagged dozens of awards including an Emmy, had set new heights with its treatment of social issues such as cancer, alcoholism and teenage pregnancy.

“No show in daytime or prime time, or anytime, has touched so many millions of viewers across so many years as Guiding Light,” The BBC quoted Barbara as saying.

The show is reportedly set to be replaced by a new edition of game show ‘Let’s Make a Deal’. (ANI)

Pak issues prohibited arms license to US security firm

Islamabad, Sep.17 (ANI): Pakistani authorities have issued 86 licenses for prohibited weapons to a security company which has been hired by the US embassy in Islamabad.

Interior Ministry sources revealed that the licenses were issued to Inter Risk following Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s approval, The Daily Times reports.

According to a private television channel, the highly sophisticated weapons have been imported from the US and each of them cost about 800,000 rupees.

When enquired about the US embassy’s contract with the private security firm, a spokesman said it was no secret that the embassy had hired Inter Risk. He said the deal was finalized in April itself. (ANI)

Spitzer’s call girl Ashley Dupre walks runway at NY Fashion Week

Melbourne, September 17 (ANI): Ashley Dupre, the former high-class call girl at the centre of the Eliot Spitzer prostitution scandal, walked the runway during New York Fashion Week.

The 24-year-old made the appearance at Bahar Shahpar’s fashion show, according to Jill Fehrenbacher at Ecouterre.

“It’s a rare rare thing when the tabloid world crosses into the world of eco-fashion, and one that might bring a little more attention to Bahar’s already-provocative line than would normally have been the case,” the Courier Mail quoted Fehrenbacher as saying.

Dupre was dubbed as an ‘informant’ during the scandal that saw the politician patronising a prostitution service that subsequently led to his resignation from the post of New York Governor.

Eighteen months after the storm, Dupre has been recording pop songs and wooing a record deal. (ANI)

Flintoff’s ECB contract rejection threatens Test cricket, but he plays it down

London, Sep.17 (ANI): All-rounder Andrew Flintoff may have unwittingly incited the break-up of international cricket by his refusal of an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) incremental contract, but he has played down reports of a possible backlash.

Flintoff has assured that his rejection of an England increment contract, a second tier deal offered to him because of his retirement from Test cricket, did not lessen his commitment to England. The all-rounder, who is Dubai undergoing rehabilitation after knee surgery, made it clear that he has no intention of missing any England games should they clash with matches in the various Twenty20 franchise competitions he also hopes to be part of.

Although Flintoff has put all negotiations on hold while he recovers he is known to have been in preliminary talks with teams in Australia, where their revamped Twenty20 competition is to be called the Big Bash and South Africa, where the Pro20 is easily the most popular professional cricket in the country.

Sean Morris, the chief executive of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, said yesterday that other players would join Flintoff in rejecting national deals and that there may be a rash of early retirements from international cricket.

“I think there will be a lot of serious discussion in Johannesburg later this month among the parties and between the parties. I can’t overestimate its importance. In the space of a few weeks we have had two leading players withdrawing from components of the international game, Andrew Flintoff from Tests and Ricky Ponting, from Twenty20 internationals,” The Telegraph quoted Morris, as saying.

Flintoff’s move may stimulate more than debate.

England captain Andrew Strauss was mildly surprised by the decision.

“I’m not going to sit in judgement of him because we don’t know the reasons. We need to sit down and speak to him about why he’s done this and we’ll then make an informed decision about what that means to his availability for England,” he said. (ANI)

PML-N moves privilege motion against Zardari

Islamabad, Sep 16 (ANI): The Pakistan Muslim League-N has moved a privilege motion in the National Assembly (NA) against the statement of President Asif Ali Zardari on giving the safe passage to the former president Pervez Musharraf.

The motion signed by 91 MNAs has been brought by Hanif Abbasi, Dr. Tariq Fazal and Anjum Aqeel, the NA Members of the PML-N.

It may be recalled that opposition leader in NA, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had announced to move a motion against Zardari the previous day, and demanded Zardari to present all the aspects of the deal – regarding Pervez Musharraf – in front of the nation and Parliament.

Earlier in the day, contradicting media reports over indemnity being granted to Musharraf, Zardari’s spokesman has said that there have been no negotiations with the so-called international guarantors to give indemnity to the former president.

In a statement, Farhatullah Babar said the President Zardari in an informal talk on Monday with reporters had remarked that national political leaders and parties had held negotiations among themselves to chase Musharraf out of office and restore Presidency to the democratic forces.

In the talk with journalists there was no mention of negotiations with the so-called national or international guarantors to give immunity to Musharraf subsequent to his exit, he said.

Zardari’s remarks of negotiations among national political parties to strategise the sacking of Musharraf have unfortunately been distorted and misrepresented as talks with so called guarantors for indemnity to Musharraf, Dawn quoted Babar, as saying.

He said no one denied the holding of negotiations among national political parties to drive Musharraf out of office.

Babar said it was the result of these negotiations that the national parliament and all provincial assemblies adopted resolutions calling upon Musharraf to quit.

It was also the result of these negotiations that the parties joined hands in preparing a comprehensive and historic charge sheet to impeach Musharraf in case he refused to quit, he said.

There was nothing new in Zardari’s remarks about negotiations among political parties to force Musharraf out of office, except for the distortion and spin now given to it, Babar added.

Babar said the noise and din raised over the alleged remarks wrongly attributed to the President is part of the campaign to discredit Zardari for anything and everything that goes wrong. (ANI)

Presley’s ex-bodyguard co-producing tell-all biopic

Washington, September 15 (ANI): Rock ‘n’ roll legend Elvis Presley’s former bodyguard is all set to reveal how his life used to be during his time with the tragic entertainer in a new biopic.

Sonny West will talk about Presley’s sensational rise to fame, his tragic demise, and struggle with drug addiction in feature-length film ‘Fame and Fortune’.

He will be a co-writer and co-producer of the film, reports Contactmusic.

According to Daily Variety, he has signed a deal with Toronto-based film company RLF Victor Productions in this regard.

West was employed by Presley from 1960 until 1976, one year prior to the star’s tragic death after suffering a heart attack. (ANI)

Natural History Museum bets on discovery of Loch Ness monster

London, Sept 14 (ANI): London’s Natural History Museum has inked a deal with bookmakers William Hill, which will see the mythical Loch Ness monster go on public display – if it is ever caught.

The Loch Ness Monster is a creature believed to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It is similar to other supposed lake monsters in Scotland.

The museum has secured the rights to showcase Nessie’s remains, if the monster is ever caught.

According to the archive documents, under the 1987 deal William Hill will pay the museum an annual fee on return for the guarantee its experts will provide “positive identification” of the elusive creature.

The agreement also covers the Yeti or Abominable Snowman, another mythological creature and an ape-like cryptid said to inhabit the Himalayan region of Nepal and Tibet.

The bookmaker currently offers odds of 500/1 on the existence of the Loch Ness monster being proved within a year and 200/1 for the Yeti.

“We have maintained our relationship with the Natural History Museum and are delighted to do so,” the Telegraph quoted Graham Sharpe, spokesman for William Hill, as saying.

“As we rely on the Met Office to rule on white Christmases, we are dependent on the museum to tell us whether any carcass that may emerge from the loch is a haddock, or a previously unknown creature from the deep,” he added. (ANI)

London, September 14 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s children are reportedly under the shield of a team of bodyguards costing 750,000 pounds a year.

The youngsters, Prince Michael, 12, Paris, 11, and seven-year-old Prince Michael II, a.k.a Blanket,were placed under protection after fears they might be targeted by kidnappers or stalkers following the death of their father.

“Michael’s death has made them more of a target. They’ll be guarded like royalty,” the Daily Express quoted a source as telling News of the World.

The Jacksons were said to have come up with a protection plan for the children and hired six security men to guard them.

The men are allegedly trained to fight and deal with kidnap and hostage situations. (ANI)

Spitzer call girl Ashley Dupre wants to make a comeback

New York, September 14 (ANI): Ashley Dupre, the former high-class call girl at the centre of the Eliot Spitzer prostitution scandal, is tired of hiding and wants a comeback.

The 24-year-old was dubbed as an ‘informant’ during the scandal that saw the politician patronising a prostitution service that subsequently led to his resignation from the post of New York Governor.

And eighteen months after the storm, Dupre, who is recording pop songs and wooing a record deal, is seeking to get her life back on track.

“Everyone likes an underdog story, and everyone likes a comeback. I’m the poster child for redemption,” the New York Post quoted her as saying.

Dupre, who is also working on a book she calls a “cautionary tale,” further laughed at the idea that she was after the limelight.

She added: “I didn’t ask for it, but now that I have it, it’s up to me to take advantage of this platform and do something amazing. I have a voice now.” (ANI)

Manchester City not in 47-mn pounds deal for Tevez

London, Sep 12 (ANI): No deal was struck with Manchester City to pay a British record transfer fee of 47 million pounds for Carlos Tevez to MSI, the company fronted by Kia Joorabchian which owned the player before his move to City.

A spokesman for Kia Joorabchian last night denied that Manchester City had struck a deal to pay 47 million pounds for Tevez to MSI.

A report last night alleged that City had agreed to pay 47 million pounds for the Argentine forward, as opposed to 25.5 million pounds, the figure widely reported as the fee City paid to lure him from Manchester United.

“It’s not true,” a spokesman for Joorabchain said of the 47 million pounds figure. The spokesman said that he expected Joorabchian, and possibly City, to issue a formal denial today.

Rumours have circulated for several weeks that City had agreed to pay considerably more for Tevez than the 25.5 million pounds reported at the time of his move, The Independent reports.

Last night’s reports suggested that City had agreed to an initial 15 million pounds payment for Tevez, with two 16 million pounds payments to come.

If City did agree to pay 47 million pounds for Tevez, as alleged last night, that figure would smash the British record of 32.5 million pounds that City paid in 2008 for Robinho.

It would cast fresh light on the magnitude of the ambitions of City’s Middle Eastern owners, and on their willingness to pay massive sums for players, the paper reports. (ANI)

Danish Prime Minister meets Manmohan Singh

New Delhi, Sep. 11 (ANI): Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Friday.

The two leaders discussed bilateral, regional and international issues.

During the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on co-operation between the governments of both the nations in the areas of environment.

Ole Lonsmann Poulsen, Denmark Ambassador to India and Vijay Sharma, Secretary to India’s federal Ministry of Forests and Environment signed the MoU in the presence of premiers of both the nations.

Danish Prime Minister’s two-day visit to New Delhi would also include meetings with the head of the UN climate panel Rajendra Pachauri.

Global talks for a new U.N. climate agreement have become mired in differences over how much money and technology rich nations will provide to poor countries to help seal a climate deal to replace the Kyoto Protocol that expires in 2012.

India fears that emissions targets will stunt its economic growth and has said it will take its own unilateral action to cut pollution. (ANI)

Danish PM to discuss climate change during visit to India

New Delhi, Sep.10 (ANI): The Prime Minister of Denmark, Lars Loekke Rasmussen, will arrive here on Friday on a daylong working visit to India to speed up negotiations on a climate deal ahead of a key summit to be held in Copenhagen between December 7 and 18.

Rasmussen will meet with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh and the UN’s top climate scientist Rajendra Pachauri, who is chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Rasmussen will meet with Dr. Singh at Hyderabad House at 12 p.m. The two sides will have delegation-level talks after which an agreement on environment cooperation will be signed.

In the afternoon, he will deliver a speech on “Green Economy” organized in cooperation with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at the Hotel Oberoi.

He will emplane for Vienna on Saturday morning.

On Tuesday, at the start of the Nordic Climate Solutions conference gathering decision-makers and businessmen in Copenhagen, Rasmussen said the negotiations were progressing slowly “in all areas.”

“It’s very difficult because these are not just issues concerning climate,” but also economy and technology, he said.

“Take the example of India, where I will meet the Indian prime minister who wants to gives his population of one billion some prosperity and who therefore doesn’t want to commit to restrictive reductions unless the world brings new technology to his country,” Rasmussen said. (ANI)

Karachi, Sep.10 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is hoping that the meeting between its chairman Ijaz Butt and England Cricket Board (ECB) chief Giles Clarke would yield some positive results for Pakistan cricket.

The PCB expects the meeting, which is scheduled to be held later this week, to be fruitful with regard to resumption of international cricket in Pakistan.

“The chairman will discuss several important issues with the ECB chief. We are hoping to get a very positive outcome from the meeting,” a PCB official said.

According to board insiders Butt is likely to discuss issues to facilitate the return of international cricket to Pakistan during the meeting.

Sources said he is also expected to finalize a deal regarding staging Pakistan’s ‘home’ series against Australia in England next summer.

Ex-Mossad head says ‘Netanyahu agreed to Golan pullout’

Jerusalem, Sep.10 (ANI): Former Mossad head Danny Yatom has claimed that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu agreed to withdraw Israeli troops from the entire Golan Heights during his first term in exchange for a peace deal with Syria and the normalization of ties between Jerusalem and Damascus. Yatom told Israel Radio that the proof for his claim was a document that appears in his new book, in which Ron Lauder, Netanyahu’s special envoy for talks with Syria at the time, reported the prime minister’s agreement to then-US president Bill Clinton.

The former Mossad chief said that although Netanyahu’s agreement didn’t bind him now, 11 years later, “he has to admit” that he did agree to withdraw from the territory.

Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud), however, told the radio station that the prime minister had not agreed to such a pullout and had repeated it on numerous occasions.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Yatom also told Army Radio on Wednesday night that only a military strike would stop Iran from attaining nuclear arms status. (ANI)

Microsoft India announces strategic alliance with TCS

New Delhi, Sep 8 (ANI/Business Wire India): Microsoft India and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) – a leading IT services, consulting, business solutions and outsourcing firm today announced a strategic alliance between the two companies to launch Microsoft-TCS virtualization Center of Excellence (CoE) in Chennai.

Designed to help customers experience the right approach to applying and managing virtualization across IT architectural layers (namely server, machine, application and desktop) in their business environments – the CoE will leverage best of breed Microsoft technologies (such as Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008) to showcase virtualization scenarios to customers.

MJ’s California home not open to public

Washington, September 8 (ANI): The California house where Michael Jackson took his last breath will not be turned into a shrine to the star.

French designer Christian Audigier, who recently sealed the deal to buy the Holmby Hills home, has failed in his effort to obtain authorisation to turn the property into a museum.

His spokeswoman Michele Elyzabeth said that local authorities have denied permission to make it a public space, reports Contactmusic.

He will be given the keys to the property in mid-September but he can only use it as a private residence.

Jackson had rented the house from one of Christian’s associates. (ANI)

Delhi Court to hear Bofors pay-off case today

New Delhi, Sep 8 (ANI): A Delhi court will hear the Bofors payoffs case against Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi today. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) may reveal its course of action following the withdrawal of Interpol’s Red Corner Notice against him.

The matter is to come up for hearing before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja.

During the brief hearing on April 30, Additional Solicitor General P P Malhotra, appearing for CBI, had informed the court that the Red Corner Notice issued against Quattrocchi was withdrawn in November last year.

The ASG had also sought two months time to decide on the future course of action in the politically-sensitive case on the court’s query as to what options were left with the probe agency following the withdrawal of the Red Corner Notice.

The Bofors scandal was a major corruption scandal in India in the 1980s, when the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and several others were accused of receiving kickbacks from Bofors AB for winning a bid to supply the Indian Army with 155 mm howitzer guns.

The court had on February 10, 1997, sent letters to Malaysia and the UAE seeking the arrest and extradition of Quattrocchi.

The CBI had registered the FIR in the Bofors case on January 22, 1990, three years after Swedish Radio on April 16, 1987, claimed that A B Bofors, the makers of the 155 mm howitzers, had paid kickbacks to top Indian politicians and key defence officials to secure the Rs 1,437 crore gun deal.The contract between the Indian government and the Swedish Company for the supply of 400 field guns was signed on March, 24, 1986. Brit female soldier ‘Combat Barbie’ advertises Armed Forces lingerie deal

London, September 7 (ANI): A British female soldier has been selected to promote a lingerie chain’s discount offer to members of the Armed Forces.

Katrina Hodge, nicknamed “Combat Barbie” by her Royal Anglian Regiment colleagues, is helping to promote La Senza’s offer of a 15 per cent off to servicemen and women.

“I am enjoying the attention and profile but my job is still as an army soldier. I love the army life and if this encourages more women to join up then that would be brilliant,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“I’m so proud of this campaign and I really hope that it encourages other high street stores to offer discounts to men and women in the armed forces,” she added.

Hodge, 22, came second in this year’s Miss England contest, and served in Iraq, where she was recognised for her bravery. (ANI)
