Black Widow surrenders weapons in Assam

Guwahati, Sep 16 (ANI): Over 170 guerillas of the Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel) (DHDJ) or Black Widow have commenced surrendering their weapons from Wednesday.

Earlier on Sunday, nearly 193 rebels of the DHDJ had surrendered their weapons well ahead of the deadline given by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

Chidambaram had asked the banned ultras to surrender weapons before September 15.

The DHD (J) is responsible for creating terror in the North Cachar Hill District of Assam for last six years, during which over 300 people have been killed.

Among those who surrendered arms were Daniel Dimasa, Daku Dimasa, David Dimasa and Nalo Dimasa who were considered as hardcore militants.

According to the new rules for facilitating peace talks with the militant organization, an outfit has to first abjure violence by depositing weapons and stay away from extortion by moving to designated camps. Only its top leadership will be allowed to sit for talks.

Defence spokesman, Col.R Kalia, said those who have deposited weapons have been kept in two temporary camps at Kapuchera and Jatinga under heavy escort by troops of the Red Shield Division of the Army.

A formal surrender ceremony would be held at Haflong later in the month in the presence of the State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, sources said.

The breakaway group of the DHD (J) led by James Dimasa are still undecided on joining the peace process.

According to Additional Director General (Special Branch) Khagen Sarmah, all the cadres of the outfit are expected to surrender their weapons in the next couple of days.

The government has adopted a multi-dimensional strategy in North Cachar Hills with strong deployment of security forces.

The brigade headquarters of the Army at Haflong has coordinating all the efforts.

Till now 373 insurgents have come over-ground depositing 136 weapons including AK series weapons, M16 rifles, INSAS rifles, rocket launchers, grenades and wireless sets, sources said. (ANI)

Prince Harry ‘back with Chelsy Davy’

London, September 13 (ANI): Prince Harry has reportedly got back together with girlfriend Chelsy Davy after a secret months-long battle to woo her back.

The prince was said to be ecstatic about their three-month trial reunion and even celebrated with a round of coffees at his Shropshire helicopter training base.

“He’s flying high and he isn’t going to blow it this time!” the Daily Star quoted a pal as saying.

Chelsy dumped the royal eight months ago and ended their five-year relationship over his lack of commitment, and her frustration at the confines of life within the Royal Family, it is believed.

The two were previously reported to have had heart-to-heart talks in secret over the summer, with Harry even promising a “no cheating” charter to prove he was serious.

The friend added: “Harry knows he’s on trial and has a deadline. But he’s always thought that, if he could only get her to see how he’d changed, he had a real chance.

“They’ve always loved each other but he knows he let her down badly in the past and he won’t do it again.” (ANI)

UN silent on Sir Creek issue after expiry of deadline

Karachi, Sep 7 (ANI): The United Nations (UN) is keeping mum on the protracted dispute between Pakistan and India over the ownership of Sir Creek even after the expiry of the deadline May 2009 deadline set by the world body to resolve this issue.

The UN had set the deadline for both the archrival countries to resolve this dispute amicably with a warning that after the expiry of the deadline the disputed area of sea would convert into the international waters.

The UN fixed this deadline in 1982, but after a lapse of 26 years, Pakistan and India have failed to settle this issue as a result of which the fishermen of both the countries are in serious trouble as they are being detained frequently and put into jails in violation of the UN laws while their boats and catch are being impounded.

Chairman Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum Muhammad Ali Shah said that at present about 800 fishermen belonging to Pakistan and India are languishing in jails of the two countries. A majority of them were nabbed from the disputed sea waters of Sir Creek, he added.

The United Nations law does not allow the arrest of fishermen and seizing of their boats, Shah said, adding that both the countries are violating the UN laws and adding insult to the fishermen miseries, who belong to the most poor segment of the society.

Why Maritime Securities of Pakistan and India were capturing fishermen from Sir Creek now when the disputed part of the sea has now become the part of International Waters from May 2009, after the expiry of the deadline given by the UN, Shah argued.

He pointed out that some of the Pakistani fishermen were languishing in the Indian jails for many months although they have completed their tenure, The Nation reported.

Both Pakistan and India share the water and the resources of the Arabian Sea. Pakistan has its coastline of 1050 km while the India has a longer coastline of 7417 km. Due to dispute over the ownership of Sir Creek, no permanent and visible demarcation of sea has been made by the two countries, Shah said.

Since its inception in 1998, the PFF is struggling against such arrests of the fishermen of both countries. (ANI)

Gogoi sets Sept.15 surrender deadline for Black Widow terror group

Guwahati, Sep.1 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday set a September 15 deadline for the Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel) a.k.a. the “Black Widow” terror group to surrender.

Talking to reporters here, Gogoi said that the state government would not extend the cease-fire deadline set earlier for the group.

“No extension of cease-fire deadline with Black Widow beyond September 15,” Gogoi tersely said.

Gogoi’s tough stand was reiterated three days fater he had undertaken a four-hour whirlwind tour to Haflong, the headquarters of North Cachar Hills district where the DHD (J) is active.

Gogoi, who reviewed the ground situation in the insurgency-hit district and held key meetings with top administration and security officials, stressed that the DHD (J) must stop all kinds of insurgent activities and extortion campaigns as a precondition to talks.

He said “the group must also hand over all the arms before coming forward for talks.” The arms will be deposited in an armoury, to be supervised by both police and the outfit.

The Calcutta Telegraph had earlier quoted Gogoi, as saying that the government had been receiving feelers from the DHD (J), expressing the outfit’s willingness to sit for a dialogue. But it would not accept any such offer unless the outfit’s leadership, and not a section of its cadres, came forward for talks.

DHD (J) chief Jewel Gorlosa, was arrested along with another leader, Partho Warisa, from Bangalore in June this year, forcing the outfit’s lower ranked cadres to declare a unilateral cease-fire.

Dispur, however, continued its operation against the outfit. The unilateral ceasefire, declared by the DHD (J) in North Cachar Hills for three months, will expire on September 7.

Gogoi also made it clear that Dispur would not agree to the demand of renaming North Cachar Hills into Dima Hajao Raji and that the district would not suffer any vivisection in future.

The chief minister expressed satisfaction over the “visible improvement” in law and order in the district in the past three months.

He assured tribal leaders that measures would be taken to usher in peace, rehabilitate violence-hit people and chalk out a special development package for the district. (ANI)

Nepal Vice President’s position defunct from today

Kathmandu, Aug 31 (ANI): Paramananda Jha’s position as Nepal Vice President has become defunct from Monday with Jha’s refusal to take oath in Nepali within the deadline given by the Supreme Court.

Rejecting the Supreme Court ruling that ordered him to take fresh oath in Nepali, Vice President Jha has declared that he will decide whether to retake the oath only if the Constitution is amended.

“The situation is that the mother language of Nepalis people so far has not been respected by the previous decisions of the Supreme Court and the government level. Thus, I can think about the issue of oath-taking only after the government and the Constituent Assembly (CA) honours the mother languages,” Nepalnews quoted him as, saying.

He also criticized the Supreme Court’s order to him to re-take oath in Nepali or else vacate his post.

He called the Supreme Court’s verdict ‘prejudiced’ and against the tenet and spirit of the interim Constitution and said it serves no purpose other than to start a “language war” as it is against the basic right of the people “to take oath in his own mother tongue”.

He also complained that some political parties supported the “anti-constitution” decision by staying quiet.

Supreme Court had issued a verdict on August 25 ordering him to take oath in Nepali within a week and that failure to do so would render his position defunct.

According to the court verdict, Jha cannot perform any duty of the Vice President and that he is not entitled to special security and privileges given to him as the Vice President. (ANI)

Britney went on tour to avoid $100m loss: Book

London, Aug 30 (ANI): Britney Spears was forced to hit the road just months after a public breakdown because she faced financial ruin, says the author of a new book.

Best-selling author and journalist Steven Dennis claims in a new book, ‘Britney: Inside The Dream’, that she stood to lose as much as 100 million dollars if she failed to honor the tour commitments that she made prior to her meltdown.

Dennis spent six months writing and researching the book, reports the Daily Express.

Robert Baker, the studio director at the Millenium Dance Complex where Britney regularly trains, told him: “If Britney didn’t go on tour she could have been hit for 100 million dollars because she was contractually obliged for another album and another tour and there was a deadline.

“The whole contract was set up and a timetable was in place before Britney had her meltdown.

“Had she quit and walked away then the recouped advances, penalties and accrued interest would have been near the 100-million-dollar mark – for someone estimated to be worth just 60 million dollars to 65 million dollars.”

Since announcing her world tour, critics have voiced their concerns that Britney was taking part in a gruelling nine-month world tour at a time when she remained mentally vulnerable.

Legally, she has been under the control of her father since February because of her mental problems.

Dennis adds, however: “I think the chief reason behind her tour was to protect Britney – firstly, to return her to an identity and routine in which she felt safe and secondly to safeguard her financially.” (ANI)

Vasundhara Raje calls on Advani and Rajnath Singh in Delhi

New Delhi, Aug.22 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje on Saturday evening called on senior leaders Lal Krishna Advani and Rajnath Singh here at their residence to discuss the leadership issue in the State.

Just before leaving for her meeting with Advani from her Delhi-based house Scindia Villa, Raje said that she was in the national capital as per schedule to meet party leaders after the three-day Chintan Baithak (brainstorming session) of the BJP.

“I can’t understand whole of this because I respect … people in the party, the senior leaders of the party and I was always meant to come after “Chintan Baithak”, I am here… No speculation…,” Raje said.

Though Raje didn’t prefer addressing the media after any of the two meetings but she is expected to have discussed the issue of her stepping down from the position of Leader of Opposition in Rajasthan Assembly and leadership issue in her State threadbare with Advani. She had about one-hour meeting with Advani.

Also, Raje is expected to have apprised Rajnath Singh about her mindset and probably about her timing to step down from the post of the Leader of the Opposition in Rajasthan State Assembly, as directed by the BJP recently. Her meeting with Rajnath Singh lasted for about 30 minutes.

On Thursday, BJP President Rajnath Singh said he had advised Raje to step down but set no timeframe. Reportedly, BJP had asked Raje to step down due to poor performance of the party in the recent national and state assembly polls.

After a week-long drama which saw her virtually defying the BJP’s central leadership, Raje on Friday left for Delhi with scores of her supporters. Along the way, she received a rapturous welcome from her supporters, suggesting that she enjoys huge popularity in Rajasthan.

Raje has been asked to resign from the post of Leader of Opposition in the wake of the party’s dismal performance in the Lok Sabha and assembly polls.

After her defiance last week, the BJP Parliamentary Board had last Sunday endorsed the decision against her but kept no deadline for it.

In Shimla, on Friday, senior BJP leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj indirectly hinted that if Raje failed to back down, she could be removed from the party on grounds of indiscipline.

Without directly confirming plans to remove Raje, Swaraj alluded at a press conference that: “The BJP has removed the party’s state level leadership in those states where it performed poorly in the last (state and general) elections.” (ANI)

Israel says it is clueless about US deadline on settlement freeze

Jerusalem, July 12 (ANI): Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon has said the Benjamin Netanyahu government has no knowledge of any six-month deadline given by the US for freezing settlement construction in the West Bank.

“We have no knowledge of this whatsoever,” The Jerusalem Post quoted Ayalon, as saying.

Earlier a Lebanon daily had quoted French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, as saying that if Israel failed to stop all Jewish construction in the West Bank within six-months, the US would end support for peace talks.

Kouchner reportedly expressed his fear that Israel’s “stubbornness, intentional foot-dragging and acquiescence to the Israel lobby” would convince the Americans to pull out of peace discussions altogether.

The French foreign minister was in Beirut on Friday for talks with senior Lebanese officials, including Hizbullah legislator Nawaf Musawi.

The meeting with Musawi was aimed at facilitating a new coalition government led by Prime Minister-designate Sa’ad Hariri. Hariri’s government is likely to include Hizbullah representation, though the Shi’ite group was defeated in national parliamentary elections.

Israel is opposed to Hizbullah joining the government.

Netanyahu’s advisor Mark Regev responded to the Kouchner-Musawi meeting by warning that “if Hizbullah joins the Lebanese government, then Lebanon as a country will be responsible for any Hizbullah aggression against Israel. That has to be clear.”

Kouchner’s meeting with a Hizbullah lawmaker is the latest in a string of European meetings with the group, which the US and the European parliament have recognized as a terrorist organization.

“Hizbullah is part of the parties that participated in the recent parliamentary elections. It is natural to meet with its representatives,” Kouchner told reporters.

“Lebanon is a democratic country; democracy implies we meet with opposition figures as well.” (ANI)

India Inc. disappointed with Mukherjee’s budget for 2009-10

New Delhi/Mumbai, July 6 (ANI): India Incorporated on Monday reacted with disappointment to the proposals for Budget 2009-10 introduced by Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

It said that Mukherjee had remained silent on key points like the revamp of fuel policy, corporate tax, and the disinvestment roadmap.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark Sensex suffered the biggest fall on any Budget day and in the year too by plunging over 869 points on the BSE on concerns at the high fiscal deficit (6.8 percent) set by the Union Budget.

The Sensex, which started coming down soon after the announcement of budgetary proposals, dipped below the 14,000-point level before closing 869.65 points down at 14,043.40, surpassing the hefty fall of 749 points on January 7.

The key index had touched the day’s low of 13,959.44 as all the heavyweight stocks led by Reliance Industries suffered a heavy loss 6.53 per cent. Besides the fiscal deficit, trading sentiment also affected as European stocks dipped to a seven-week low on worries that economic recovery might still be far way off. The 50-share National Stock Exchange index Nifty also tumbled by 258.55 points to 4,135.70, after hitting the day’s low of 4,133.70.

Banking sector stocks suffered the most, losing 8.17 per cent to 7,768.63, as ICICI Bank tumbled by 10 per cent and HDFC Bank by 5.88 per cent among lenders as the Budget did not have measures to open up the industry and on concerns that the borrowing plan will reduce the value of bond holdings, brokers said.

Apart from the fiscal deficit, the other worry for captains of industry was the hike in Minimum Alternate Tax from ten to fifteen percent.

The Nifty also gave a thumbs down to the budget announcements.

Mukherjee left the corporate tax, customs and excise duty structure unchanged. He abolished the Fringe Benefit Tax which was the bugbear of the industry. Also, the deadline for Corporate India’s demand for a rollout of Goods and Services Tax has been set as April 2010.

He left the Securities Tax unchanged but scrapped the Commodities Transaction Tax. (ANI)

Haj pilgrims’ passports won’t require police verification

New Delhi, June 29 (ANI): In a bid to facilitate the issuance of temporary passports to Haj pilgrims, the UPA Government has decided to do away with police verification process.

On Monday, the Haj Committee of India said the Government’s decision to this effect came after two meetings in Delhi and Bangalore on June 8 and 10 June, chaired by N Ravi, Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs.

“The police verification for Haj pilgrims has been waived off. The decision was taken keeping in mind the difficulties in issuance of passports to pilgrims in a short span of two months,” said Mohd Owais, the Chief Executive Officer of Haj Committee of India, in the national capital.

The issue of Haj passport for Saudi Arabia will be valid for eight months only and this will not be renewed.

However, Owais said those pilgrims who would like to make their Haj passports a permanent one later, will have to go through police verification.

Owais also said that pilgrims, who have already submitted their application forms for passport and their police verification pending till 20th June, will be issued passports.

“If there is no adverse reports, pilgrims will get their passports,” Owais said, adding the Haj Committee has received around 3.57 lakh applications this year from devotees who want to perform Haj this year.

“The Haj Committee has a quota of 1.04 lakh while the private sector has a quota of 45,000. The rest is that of government quota,” Owais said.

The decision to issue passports came in the backdrop of Saudi Arabia insisting that the pilgrims should carry international passports.

“We had meetings with them. But they said they wanted a uniform pattern and said they cannot change the deadline in this regard for India alone,” Owais said. (ANI)

PCB to consider Yousuf for Sri Lanka Test series following NOC from ICL

Islamabad, May 28 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt has said that middle order batsman Mohammad Yousuf would be considered for the Test series against Sri Lanka starting from June 27.

Yousuf has already submitted a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Indian Cricket League (ICL) to the PCB, saying he has terminated his contract with the rebel league.

However, it seems that the PCB is still undecided about the punishment for players who had sided with the ICL, The Nation reports.

Senior PCB official said any final decision in this regard would be taken by the board’s Chairman Ijaz Butt.

He said players who intend to terminate their contract with the ICL by the May 31 deadline would be allowed back into the national team after a cooling off period, or could do so by just paying fines.

“We will put up the case to the Chairman. He will take a final decision. But the International Cricket Council (ICC) has advised its member boards to have a cooling period of six to 12 months under a clause in the regulations on unauthorized tournaments,” a report submitted by the PCB Chief Operating Officer (COO) Saleem Altaf stated. New Iraq ‘prisoner abuse’ photographs surface in Australia

Washington, May 15 (ANI): Graphic photographs of alleged prisoner abuse in Iraq have surfaced in spite of the Obama administration trying its level best to halt its release.

The images emerged from Australia yesterday where they were originally obtained by the channel SBS in 2006 in the wake of the Abu Ghraib scandal.

The shocking images of inmates in Iraq and Afghanistan were published just a day after Obama announced plans for a legal battle stop them ever being seen.

According to The Telegraph, one picture showed a prisoner hung up upside down while another showed a naked man smeared in excrement standing in a corridor with a guard standing menacingly in front of him. Another prisoner is handcuffed to the window frame of his cell with underpants pulled over his head.

Others show military guards threatening to sexually assault a detainee with a broomstick and hooded prisoners on transport planes with Playboy magazines opened to pictures of nude women on their laps.

The president’s change of heart brought bitter criticism from the left wingers and the American Civil Liberties Union, which had brought a freedom of information case against the US government applying to see the pictures.

“It is true that these photos would be disturbing. The day we are no longer disturbed by such repugnant acts would be a sad one,” said Anthony Romero, executive director.

The White House legal team was yesterday preparing for a June 9 deadline to present its case that it would be against the interests of national security to make the pictures public. (ANI)

Congress, BJP make last attempt to woo Sikh voters

Amritsar / Majitha, May 11 (ANI): Just hours before the election campaign deadline for the final phase of elections in Punjab, Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders made all out attempt to reach out to Sikh voters in Punjab.

One of the main topics that found mention in Congress and BJP election rallies on Monday was the atrocities of Taliban against Sikhs in Pakistan’sorth West Frontier Province (NWFP).
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, addressing an election rally for a Congress candidate Om Parkash Soni from Amritsar, said that India was fully aware of the problems faced by minorities in Pakistan.

Dr. Singh also mentioned that the situation across the border was not good but India is in touch with Pakistan government on the issue of Taliban’s atrocities and on recovery of Jazia (tax) from the minorities in Pakistan.

“We are aware of the problems people of different religions are facing in Pakistan. We have initiated a dialogue with Pakistan about Taliban seeking Jazia from minorities there. India will take step in this regard,” said Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Dr. Singh recalled his good old days spent in Amritsar and how much he still values a personal bond with this holy city. He remembered the day when, after the Partition, his family took shelter in Amritsar.

Dr. Singh stated that today if he is the Prime Minister of India it is because of two reasons. First, because of “your love and affection” for which he always is indebted to the people of Amritsar and second due to his hard work and education.

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi was also present during this rally.

In another election rally held at Majitha, BJP leader Lal Krishan Advani also expressed concern over the issue of ‘Jazia’ being charged from Sikhs, who are in minority, in Pakistan.

Advani, while campaigning for Navjot Singh Sidhu, said that the ‘Jazia’ reminded him of the Mughal era when such kind of disparities and atrocities were there on the minorities.

Advani said that in case he came to power he would personally see the interests of Punjab, particularly of Amritsar.

Sidhu is contesting for third time in the parliamentary elections from Amritsar constituency.

Advani assured all Punjabis here to give special consideration for the development of the area if NDA came into power.

Later, Advani also visited the Golden Temple and had ‘Langar’ (religious food) at the temple.

He also expressed gratitude to the SAD for being the major coalition partners with NDA since 1952. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)

Nepal President consults CA chairman on procedure of appointing new PM

Kathmandu, May 8 (ANI): Nepal President Ram Baran Yadav has discussed with Constituent Assembly Chairman Subash Chandra Nemwang the procedure for appointing a new Prime Minister if the political parties do not come up with a consensus government by the Saturday deadline.

With Maoists firm on their demand for an apology from President Yadav for his move to retain Chief of Army Staff General Rookmangud Katawal, the possibility of a consensus government is dim.

Nemwang has suggested that the President forward the issue to parliament if the parties fail to come up with a consensual choice.

“I informed the President about our statutory provisions and tradition of appointing a Prime Minister. There is no other way except taking the issue to the parliament, Nepalnews quoted Nemwang, as saying.

Meanwhile, the politburo meeting of the Maoists has stressed that the party should organise more protest programmes to exert pressure on President Yadav to correct his ‘unconstitutional’ move to reinstate the Army chief.

Most of the politburo members were of unanimous that the party should intensify protests from the parliament and launch a struggle from the streets until ‘civilian supremacy’ is upheld through the sacking of the Army chief.

Maoist spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma said the meeting discussed the protest strategy the party should adopt against the President’s move including formation of a new government.

The meeting also delved into important issues like army integration, Constitution writing and proper conclusion of the peace process.

The 45-member politburo meeting will continue today. (ANI)

Satyam-linked Maytas in talks to restructure debt

New Delhi, May 6 (ANI): Cash-strapped builder Maytas Infra Ltd is negotiating with its 17 lenders, including State Bank of India (SBI), according to official sources.

“We have appointed certain committees. We will have a project management committee. We have also constituted an audit committee, banking and financing committee and the legal committee and in these committees, the project management committee… We have also included others like ILFS, ICICI bank, SBI. Our main task is to evaluate the project and restore the confidence with the customers and vendors,” said K Ramalingam, Chairman, Maytas Infra Ltd, at a news conference in New Delhi.

The company will hire SBI Capital Markets to implement the restructuring.

The board was expected to pursue five billion rupees in receivables from customers as part of a mandate to revive the company that has seen orders being cancelled and customers worrying over the company’s credibility.

Maytas, which is controlled by the family of Satyam’s former chairman Ramalinga Raju, has orders worth 85 billion rupees.

It was also awarded a 150-billion-rupee metro project in Hyderabad, but Maytas missed a deadline to tie up funds for the project.

The company has been under the government’s scanner since early January when Raju resigned from Satyam after revealing profits at the outsourcer had been falsified for years. In April, Satyam’s government-appointed board sold a 31 percent stake in the outsourcer to Tech Mahindra Ltd after a global bidding to help revive the company.

Shares in Maytas, whose market value has plunged three-quarters to 49 million dollars since early January, rose by its daily limit of five percent to 41.05 rupees in a flat Mumbai market on Tuesday. (ANI)

GM says Pontiac not gone yet; gets another 2 billion dollars

Washington – Reports that General Motors might kill off its muscled Pontiac line – Firebird, Grand Prix and Bonneville – pushed GM to nix the idea on Friday, at least for now.

GM is already working to shake off Hummer, Saab and Saturn as part of its belt-tightening ahead of the crucial June 1 deadline, set by the government for the country’s largest car maker to attain viability.

GM received news this week that it would get another 2 billion dollars in loans from the US government to help it stay afloat until the deadline. The new infusion brings to
15.4 billion dollars its debt to the US government since December.

GM faces bankruptcy after June 1 if the government’s auto task force believes it has not become lean enough to survive.

Reacting to reports that GM was going to kill off Pontiac, GM posted a statement on its website to dispute “media speculation” on the topic and say it was still reviewing its plan to ensure success.

“General Motors has not announced any changes to its long-term viability plan or to the future status of any of its brands,” the company said.

GM’s smaller rival, Chrysler, faces a shorter deadline on viability on Thursday, and is hustling to nail down a buy-in deal with Italian automaker Fiat, get more cooperation from its lenders and talk its employees, particularly in Canada, into parting with some of their union benefits. (dpa)

India conveys its concern to Pak about Taliban targeting Sikhs in FATA

New Delhi, May 1 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs has conveyed its concern to Islamabad about the treatment and safety of minorities in Pakistan, after reports of Sikhs being expelled and forced to pay ‘Jaziya’ by the Taliban.

“On seeing reports about Sikh families in Pakistan being driven out of their homes and being subject to Jaziya and other such impositions, the Government of India has taken up the question of treatment of minorities in Pakistan with the Government of Pakistan,” a spokesperson of the ministry said.

Earlier, the Taliban had expelled at least 50 Sikh families from the Orakzai Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) after they failed to pay ‘Jazia’.

The Taliban had demanded 12 million rupees as protection money from the Sikhs, who have living in the region from hundred of years, but they could arrange only 6.7 million rupees.

Later, it was reported that the extremists occupied houses and shops of the Sikhs in Qasim Khel and Feroz Khel areas of the Agency and auctioned their valuables for 0.8 million rupees, The Daily Times reports.

The Taliban had also demolished houses belonging to the Sikh community in the region.

The Taliban’s Orakzai Agency chief Hakeemullah Mehsud ordered the demolition of the houses after the Sikhs failed to meet a deadline fixed for delivering the protection money.

According to reports, many tribal families have started migrating to different parts of Hangu and Kohat out of fear of the Taliban action. (ANI)
