Police arrest England fan after security breach

(Reuters) – South African police on Sunday arrested an England fan for trespassing after he walked into the players’ dressing room following a goalless World Cup draw with Algeria.

Sports

Pavlos Joseph, 32, was taken to the Cape Town Magistrate’s court, where was released on 500 rand ($66) bail, South African Police Service spokeswoman Sally de Beer told Reuters.

His trial is due to begin Monday and he has been banned from attending any more World Cup matches, de Beer said.

The man slipped into the England players’ dressing room on Friday, raising concerns about lax security during the month-long tournament.

Police have taken over security at Cape Town’s Green Point stadium following a wage dispute between stewards and the contracted security firm.

Britain’s Sunday Mirror newspaper printed an interview with a man who said he was Joseph Sunday. The South London resident claimed to have been looking for the toilet when he stumbled in on the players.

“You are a disgrace,” Joseph told them, according to the Sunday Mirror.

England’s David Beckham has said the fan did not comment on the team’s performance and just said “hello” before walking out.

South Africans party but robbery mars mood

(Reuters) – South Africans danced and blew horns for their beloved national team on Wednesday but a robbery by gunmen at a media hotel dampened the World Cup party mood.

Sports

Tens of thousands of fans sang and shook their stuff in the streets of Johannesburg for a parade by the local “Bafana Bafana” (The Boys) team who are helping unite a nation still suffering divisions 16 years after the end of apartheid.

In scenic Cape Town, fans brought out their “vuvuzela” trumpets — fast becoming the unofficial symbol of South Africa 2010 — for a massive show of support at midday.

“This can be our 12th man,” South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said of the horns. His side face Mexico on Friday in the first game of Africa’s first World Cup.

Africans are praying the June 11-July 11 tournament will be a roaring success and displace the stereotypical images of hunger, AIDS and high crime. “I have never experienced this type of vibe in my life before,” said Brenda Barratt, 59, at the team parade.

Robbers soured the atmosphere, though, and sent a reminder of local crime levels rivaling anywhere outside a war-zone with a pre-dawn raid on journalists from Portugal and Spain.

They rifled through rooms of sleeping reporters to steal equipment and cash at a lodge at scenic Magaliesburg town. “It was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me,” said photographer Antonio Simoes, who woke up to be held at gunpoint.

In other unwanted developments, a shocking and ever-growing injury list — some are already calling it the “curse” of this World Cup — has kept out leading names like David Beckham, Nani, Michael Essien and Michael Ballack.

Even a referee, Chile’s Pablo Pozo Quinteros, fell victim and had to pull out of handling Sunday’s Algeria-Slovenia game.

Other big names of world football, like Arjen Robben of the Netherlands, Spain’s Andres Iniesta and Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba, are racing to get fit.

There was good news for Australia, with midfielder and main goal threat Tim Cahill expected to be over a neck strain for their Group D opener on Sunday against Germany.

SPANISH STROLL

Plenty of other established names will be present. One of them, Fernando Torres, shrugged off a knee injury to score in Spain’s 6-0 rout of Poland in a final warm-up on Tuesday night.

The Euro 2008 champions have never won a World Cup, but have a team brimming with talent and are marginally bookies’ Favorites to win ahead of the leading ranked team, Brazil.

Five-times world champions Brazil romped to a 5-1 win over Tanzania in their last friendly on Monday, with Kaka emerging from an injury-plagued season at Real Madrid to net.

With hooligans from England and Argentina already thwarted, and a stampede injuring 15 people at a weekend match, the hosts are praying for calm off the pitch as well as success on it.

“The government will not tolerate any unruly, disruptive and unsafe behavior,” South African government spokesman Themba Maseko said in a statement on Wednesday.

Authorities, who are particularly worried about illegal tickets, have deployed more than 40,000 police to keep order.

Africa’s most famous son, Nelson Mandela, 91, is expected to join the party at Soccer City on Friday.

His presence spurred South Africa to Rugby World Cup glory in 1995 and the political prisoner-turned-president is the living symbol of the nation’s transformation into the modern era from its past of apartheid and international isolation.

Africa’s six competing teams will hope to draw inspiration from Mandela to break Europe and South America’s stranglehold on the World Cup, or at least go further than Cameroon and Senegal’s quarter-final showings in 1990 and 2002.

English bookmaker William Hill has Ivory Coast as Africa’s best hope at 50/1 odds, way behind Spain at 4/1 and Brazil at 9/2. Argentina, England and the Netherlands are next in betting.

Hosts South Africa are rated 150/1.

Brad Pitt to compete with Beckham for World Cup bid

London, June 4 (ANI): Actor Brad Pitt will compete with ace footballer David Beckham after the Hollywood superstar joined the committee trying to bring the 2018 World Cup to the United States.

Last month, Beckham officially presented England’s bid for the 2018 World Cup to FIFA president Sepp Blatter, and now Pitt has joined the USA Bid Committee.

“Soccer is a truly global sport and the opportunity to join the effort to have the US host the world’s greatest sporting event again is a great honour,” The Mirror quoted Pitt, as saying.

Comedian Drew Carey and actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger are also on the US committee.

Both countries are also bidding for the 2022 World Cup, as are Australia, Russia, Spain-Portugal and the Netherlands-Belgium.

Japan, South Korea and Qatar are also bidding for the 2022 tournament.

The US staged the tournament in 1994, while England hosted the European Championships in 1996.

FIFA’s executive committee will select the 2018 and 2022 hosts in a vote on December 2. (ANI)

Beckham to help ‘dumped’ Walcott deal with despair

London, June 4(ANI): England footballer David Beckham has offered to help winger Theo Walcott to come to terms with being excluded from Fabio Capello’s 23-man squad for the World Cup in South Africa.

Beckham has texted Walcott and told him to keep his chin up. He also plans a more in-depth phone chat over the next 10 days.

The 35-year-old feels a particular affection for Walcott, whom he took under his wing at the 2006 World Cup in Germany when he was skipper and Walcott was a star-struck 17-year-old, The Sun reports.

He is especially keen that Walcott realises he can still be a big part of England’s Euro 2012 qualifying campaign and beyond.

Walcott had been a crucial member of Capello’s team for World Cup qualifying rounds, and had enhanced his reputation when he struck a hat-trick against Croatia in 2008.

However, following injuries and a loss of form, Walcott was left out of the final 23, which was announced on Tuesday. (ANI)

No biz angle to marriage: Posh Beckham

Former Spice girl Victoria Beckham has dismissed reports that her marriage to footballer David Beckham has been reduced to a business arrangement.

Dismissing that she has never recovered from an affair allegation in 2004 around the soccer star, the 35-year-old star insists their union is still very healthy, Ok! Magazine reported.

“We are working on things together but our marriage is absolutely not a business arrangement, Victoria said.

The couple got married in 1999, but five years later David was accused of having a four-month romance with his personal assistant Rebecca Loos.

The English midfielder branded the allegation “ludicrous” and the couple sticked together, but it has long been speculated they only kept their marriage intact for their three children and their business empire.

“I know David has never cheated on me. I really do believe deep down that I have the most faithful husband I could hope for. I can honestly say I am really lucky to have him. I couldn’t live a lie and it would be unfair on the children. We are working on things together but our marriage is absolutely not a business arrangement. Could you, for all the money in the world? I couldn’t,” Victoria said.

Beckham rallies England squad to win World Cup for Brit soldiers in Afghanistan

London, May 26(ANI): England footballer David Beckham has called on Fabio Capello’s men to secure World Cup glory in South Africa to honour the British soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

Beckham, who was recently in Afghanistan for a surprise visit to boost the morale of thousands of British troops serving in the country, delivered a dressing room speech to his England team-mates before Monday’s friendly 3-1 victory over Mexico.

England captain Rio Ferdinand said that Beckham told the squad to be inspired by the troops in Afghanistan.

“Becks came in the changing room and he was talking about his trip. He told us about the experience he had going over there and what is was really like. He said the lads do a great job for us,” The Mirror quoted Ferdinand, as saying.

“It is great that we are getting support from the boys in Afghanistan. With them being so far away they probably think we don”t really care about what is going on, but we do,” he added.

Earlier, Beckham, who is recovering from an Achilles-tendon injury, had spoken about his respect for the armed forces.

“I have nothing, but admiration for these young men and women and it makes me very proud to be British,” Beckham said.

Britain has around 10,000 troops in Afghanistan as part of an international force, largely fighting the Taliban. (ANI)

Beckham will be England’s cheerleader

London, May 24 (IANS) David Beckham will not be an apprentice to manager Fabio Capello, but his role will be that of a cheerleader on the England bench at the football World Cup being held in South Africa June 11-July 11.

Capello made it clear that Beckham, who has been ruled out of the World Cup after rupturing his Achilles tendon, will not be a coaching staff.

‘He is not coaching staff, absolutely not,’ the England manager was quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph.

Capello was almost dismissive when mention was made that Beckham could contribute to tactical plans.

‘He will stay with us during the World Cup, but no coaching. You have to respect the coaches. He will not be like a coach. We have different projects for him, he is an ambassador for the 2018 World Cup and can go one or two times around South Africa. But it is important that David stays with us. He is one of the really important players who played with us. He is dedicated,’ Capello said.

Beckham’s role will now revolve around helping team spirit on a goodwill safari and, in dressing-room parlance, working as BBC – Balls, Bibs and Cones.

Henry all set to play soccer in US league

London, May 14 (ANI): Barcelona striker Thierry Henry is all set to join David Beckham to play in Major League season in the United States.

The ex-Arsenal striker has signed a pre-contract agreement to join New York Red Bulls for the summer’s Major League season.

He has been unable to hold down a regular playing slot at Barcelona this term behind the likes of Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, The Sun reports.

Henry was a hero at the Gunners with 174 goals in 254 appearances before switching to the Barcelona three years ago, where he has scored 35 in only 78 games. (ANI)

Becks still dreams of bringing World Cup to England

London, May 14 (ANI): In an article for the BBC, football star David Beckham has said that it has always been a dream of his to bring the World Cup to England.

“I dreamed as a schoolboy of playing in a World Cup finals. I have been lucky enough to enjoy that experience and I hope I can again this summer. I dreamed as well of seeing a World Cup tournament played in England – and together we have a chance to make that happen in 2018,” Beckham says.

“We also have the chance to host the World Cup in our own country if we can get everyone to support it. The people who will decide who gets to hold the tournament will want to see that support.
So my message to England fans everywhere is, please support us and really get behind the team in South Africa, but also get behind the 2018 bid,” he adds.

“I might not make it as a player to the 2018 World Cup, but whether it’s as a player, a pundit or a fan, I’ll take any opportunity to be there – and I want it to be in England,” Beckham said. (ANI)

Terry shrugs off injury fears, to play in Saturday’s FA Cup final

London, May 13 (ANI): Chelsea skipper John Terry, hurt his right foot tackling Daniel Sturridge in training, but is hoping to play in Saturday’s FA Cup final after giving England manager Fabio Capello a World Cup scare.

Terry’s injury raised fears that England’s ‘curse of the metatarsal’ has struck again. He went to hospital wearing a protective boot but scans revealed no major problem.

Gary Neville, David Beckham, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney all suffered broken metatarsals in the build-up to previous World Cups. So it was relief all round when Terry’s scan proved negative.

“I took a slight knock but with such an important match on Saturday the right course of action was to put a protective boot on.

“The scan has shown there is no break. I’m hoping to train tomorrow if not Friday and, of course, play in the FA Cup final,” The Sun quoted Terry, as saying.

The slight injury had been a worry for both Carlo Ancelotti and Capello, who announced his initial 30-man World Cup squad on Tuesday.

Losing Terry would have been a major blow for both coaches. (ANI)

England rope in Lord Horatio Nelson to bag 2018 FIFA WC bid

“There could be no better an advocate (for the bid) than Lord Nelson, atop his iconic column,” The Sun quoted London Mayor Boris Johnson as having said.

On Friday, Becks will hand over the official 1,700-page bid dossier to FIFA in Switzerland, the paper reports.

Over a million people have already signed up to support England’s bid. But they are in for some tough competition as there are five rival bids in the race.

Victoria Beckham has ‘Worst Celebrity Feet’

Of the 21 per cent who would let a famous person near their feet, Cheryl Cole for men and George Clooney for women topped the list. (ANI)

Man U players warned not to join anti-Glazer protest

London, May 8 (ANI): Keeping in mind plans of rebel Manchester United supporters to flood the Old Trafford stadium with the champions’ old colours to protest against the Glazer family’s ownership, players have been ordered not to pick up any such scarves hurled on the pitch after Sunday’s Premier League game.

Pressure group Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) announced on Friday that they would be handing out free “Glazers Out” kits containing a flag, whistle and card emblazoned with the word “GO”.

They blame the American family for saddling the club with huge debts and want fans to hold up the cards when TV cameras focus on them or if United score against Stoke City.

United players have been warned that they must not give the “Glazers Out” campaign publicity by donning anything green and gold, like ex-star David Beckham did when he returned with AC Milan earlier this year.

“The word has come down from on high that the lads should only pick up red and white scarves, hats and flags. The Beckham incident was quite embarrassing for the club and the last thing they want is for Wayne Rooney or Ryan Giggs to be seen in green and gold,” The Sun quoted a United source, as saying.

In an email to supporters, MUST said: “Win, lose or draw, let’s call time on the Glazers. The manager, the players, the supporters – we’re all part of one big Manchester United family. The Glazers are not part of our family. We need to make that clear!”

Club chief executive David Gill said last week he would rather see the stadium full of red and white scarves instead of green and gold. (ANI)

Football ‘Gladiators’ in Perspex cages set to do battle in O2 Arena

London, May 8 (ANI): A British company is launching a series of events to find the “best player” in football, cricket, rugby and American football by pitting them against each other in front of spectators.

Some of the world’s top footballers are to star in a ground breaking contest to be held in July at London’s O2 Arena, testing skills such as control, strike power and goal scoring.

Liverpool ace Steven Gerrard and Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas will join rivals to be staged in front of 20,000 fans just after the World Cup.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo are also in the frame to compete along with Valencia’s David Villa and Didier Drogba of Chelsea.

The players will face challenges including A:3K Attack — where six of them will be placed in a Perspex cage with six goals and two footballs, trying to score as many times as possible, The Times reports.

“The players will be stripped back to expose their raw talent,” said Steve Clarke, the founder of Aura Entertainment, which is said to have invested about 10 million pounds in A:3K Football.

Each player is understood to receive at least 500,000 pounds to take part.

Talks have also taken place with rugby, cricket and American football players to expand the format.

Aura is to hold talks later this month about taking the football event to Madison Square Garden, New York, and is negotiating to create an American Football version. “What we’re trying to do is create an entertainment concept,” said Clarke.

He said that formats for other sports could be introduced next year. “We have already had conversations with significant players in other sports — specifically cricket, rugby and American football.”

The footballers were persuaded to take part by Terry Byrne, David Beckham’s long-time confidant. (ANI)

Leonardo to learn fate as Milan renaissance falters

AC Milan coach Leonardo holds a news conference on Friday when the main topic of conversation will be his managerial future following fresh speculation he will leave at the end of the season.

The Brazilian, who succeeded Carlo Ancelotti last May when the Italian left for Chelsea, has stayed silent on the issue in order to concentrate on the Serie A run-in but chief executive Adriano Galliani has admitted the rookie may quit.

“He has three kids in Rio and sooner or later he will go back to Brazil,” Galliani told Sky TV this month.

Italian media speculated on Thursday that club owner Silvio Berlusconi had decided to sack Leonardo in any case after reports said the Italian prime minister had been overheard discussing Milan’s average season and possible new managers.

Assistant coach Filippo Galli is seen as favourite by bookmakers.

Milan have not commented on the speculation, just as they refused to confirm Ancelotti’s departure for Chelsea until the end of last season despite talks having gone on for months.

Most Rossoneri fans were underwhelmed by the appointment of former technical director Leonardo, seeing the move as a cheap way of finding a new coach amid general belt-tightening from Berlusconi which included the sale of Kaka and limited new buys.

Milan have not won the scudetto since 2004 and lie a distant third in Serie A with three matches to go, just four points above in-form Sampdoria who threaten to steal the third automatic Champions League spot.

Fiorentina visit the San Siro on Saturday in a tricky clash.

Milan’s campaign started badly and a pickup in form mid-season, highlighted by a win at Real Madrid, soon dropped off as they bowed out of Europe and injuries to the likes of Alexandre Pato and David Beckham hit their progress.

The sight of treble-chasing Inter Milan and coach Jose Mourinho dancing with delight in Barcelona on Wednesday having reached the Champions League final will also have brought home to Berlusconi how far his 2007 European Cup winners have fallen.

Becks’ sister ‘gets cosy’ with Jermaine Pennant

London, April 28(ANI): David Beckham”s younger sister Joanne has been spotted getting cosy with footballer Jermaine Pennant.

Seemingly, the ex-Liverpool star met the beauty during a night out at Merah in London.

“Jermaine”s eyes nearly popped out of his head when he saw Jo in her figure-hugging outfit,” the Mirror quoted an onlooker, as saying.

The insider added: “He invited her to sit with him on his table and they looked very cosy together. It looked like they would meet up again. They definitely exchanged numbers.”
