Sehwag is the best Twenty20 batsman: Warner

St. Lucia, Apr 30(ANI): Australian opening batsman David Warner believes that his Delhi Daredevils’ team-mate Virender Sehwag is the best Twenty20 batsman he has seen.

“In terms of batsman in T20 it is hard to go past Sehwag when he gets going, but there are so many good players going around,” Fox Sports quoted Warner, as saying.

Sehwag had topped the list of run-scorers for Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League season three.

The dashing opener made 346 runs at 25.42 from 14 games, but will not be taking part in the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies after suffering a shoulder injury.

Warner also said that Australia is a strong contender to win the tournament, and he reckons teams from the sub-continent, including India, will be the biggest dangers.

“The sub-continent teams are obviously tough because the wickets tend to be slow and low here. Obviously we need to just get through our group and then we play either India or Sri Lanka I think so the sub-continent teams look like they will be our biggest challenge,” Warner said.

The 23-year-old has been in remarkable form ahead of the tournament, and scored his second successive half-century to guide Australia to a thumping 101 run victory against Windward Islands in their final warm-up match.

He goes into Australia’s Group A clash with Pakistan on Sunday in top form after blasting 72 from 49 balls in Tuesday’s one-run loss to Zimbabwe. (ANI)

Blues retain Warner’s services

Twenty20 specialist Dave Warner has rejected the entreaties of rival states to remain with New South Wales for the next three seasons.

Warner, afforded only limited opportunities with the Blues’ first-class team despite his peerless reputation for T20 pyrotechnics, was due to be out of contract in July but ultimately decided to stay and fight for his place in NSW.

By doing so he elected not to entertain the approaches from rival states, among whom Queensland and Victoria are thought to have pushed hard to win his signature by offering the incentive of a place in their respective Sheffield Shield sides.

“I am very much looking forward to continuing my playing career at New South Wales,” Warner said.

“I have played all my junior and senior cricket here and I would like to perform well for my home state.

“NSW has a proud tradition of producing great cricketers for the state and for Australia and if, in some way, I have the opportunity to be part of that tradition it would be great.

“We have a strong squad at NSW.”

Though he missed out on a Cricket Australia contract for 2010-11, Warner has made no secret of seeing himself as more than a T20 player, saying he would like to add to his seven Australian appearances in 50-over cricket while also yearning to play Tests someday.

Nevertheless, his place as a T20 maestro in NSW has had its advantages, not least his ability to secure lucrative T20 contracts with the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League and English county Middlesex.

Hayden devastates Daredevils

Matthew Hayden delivered a batting master class in the Indian Premier League on Friday night, thumping 93 runs off 43 balls to give Chennai Super Kings a five-wicket win over the Delhi Daredevils.

The former Australia opener hit nine fours and seven sixes as the visitors made 5 for 190 to overhaul Delhi’s 6 for 185 with five balls to spare.

Virender Sehwag top-scored for the home side with 74 from 38.

Australian former Test stars also dominated the match at Cuttack where Deccan Chargers beat Kings XI Punjab by six runs.

Man-of-the-match Andrew Symonds struck 53 runs from 38 balls and skipper Adam Gilchrist 33 from 12 as the Chargers made 7 for 170 and then restricted Punjab to 8-164.

IK Pathan top-scored for the visitors with 60 from 29.

Tendulkar guides Mumbai to emphatic win

Sachin Tendulkar has inspired Mumbai Indians to a crushing 98-run victory over Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League.

Tendulkar cracked 63 off 32 balls as Mumbai scored 7 for 218 off its 20 overs.

Australian paceman Dirk Nannes was the most economical of the beleaguered Delhi bowlers, finishing with figures of 0 for 35 off his four overs.

Delhi struggled to keep up with the required run rate thanks largely to some tight bowling from West Indian pair Kieron Pollard (1 for 24) and Dwayne Bravo (2 for 11) as well as Sri Lankan all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya, who took 2 for 17.

A quick-fire 24 from Virender Sehwag was the highlight of the Daredevils’ innings as they lost their last six wickets for 41 runs to slump to 120 all out with 21 balls remaining.

Injured Dhoni ruled out of IPL-3 for 10 days

Kolkata, March 17 (ANI): Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the skipper of the Chennai Super Kings has been ruled out of the third edition of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament for ten days due to an elbow injury.

Dhoni was hit on his elbow by a Shane Bond delivery during the match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Tuesday, which they won convincingly.

However, the team”s coach Stephen Fleming ruled out any major injury adding, “He has gone for an X-ray. I hope that everything is well and it”s just a bruise and nothing more than that.”

Suresh Raina has been appointed the stand-in-skipper for the time Dhoni is out of the squad. He will lead the side in their next match against the Delhi Daredevils to be played at the Ferozshah Kotla on March 19. (ANI)

Sehwag blitzes Warne’s Royals

Big-hitting India opener Virender Sehwag has blasted Delhi Daredevils to a comfortable six-wicket win over Shane Warne’s Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League in Ahmedabad overnight.

Sehwag hammered 75 off just 34 balls as the Daredevils easily chased down the Royals’ under-par total of 6 for 141, finishing with a score of 4 for 142 with 17 balls to spare.

Warne’s side, which won the competition in 2008, was restricted by some tight bowling from the Daredevils, with Abhishek Jhunjhunwala top scoring with 54 off 45 balls.

Australia’s Dirk Nannes was once again impressive and grabbed 1 for 27 off his four overs for the Daredevils.

The Royals’ total never looked big enough with Sehwag at the crease, as the Indian superstar clubbed five sixes and eight fours in his entertaining knock.

Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait endured a difficult evening for the Royals, bowling four wides as he finished with figures of 0 for 28.

Warne took the wicket of South Africa’s AB De Villiers, to peg back the Daredveils, before Dinesh Karthik (23 not out) and Mithun Manhas (11 not out) guided their side to an emphatic victory.

On Tuesday night (AEDT), Bangalore hosts Punjab and Kolkota plays Matthew Hayden’s Chennai Super Kings in Kolkota.

IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils tells Collingwood to show up

London, Sep.9 (ANI): England one-day captain Paul Collingwood has been told by the IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils to show up for next month’s Champions League.

Collingwood is frustrated at having to join up with Delhi Daredevils for the event in India that is contested by Twenty20 winners from around the world.

The smallprint of his contract says that he had to play in the Champions League if Delhi qualified.

But last night Collingwood’s representatives were still hoping they could release him – after a year, which has already seen the all-rounder selected for 14 Tests, 16 one-day internationals and nine T20 clashes.

The Sun quoted a source, as saying: “Paul is very tired, he has had a long, hard year.

“Frankly, he looks knackered and we’re still hoping Delhi will relent. The money he could win is not an issue for him. It would be counter productive for them to have a player who is so obviously in need of a rest.” (ANI)

‘Lucky’ Nannes dangles between Delhi and Victoria

New Delhi, Aug 30(ANI): Delhi Daredevil cricketer Dirk Nannes, who has been in the news for his alliance with numerous teams, has said that he considers himself lucky for the opportunities that he has been enjoying.

“I guess I’ve been lucky and bowled pretty well a couple of times and it’s been a pretty exciting journey,” The Age quoted Nannes, as saying.

“I just want to try and stay on the park as long as I can. The more I stay on the park the better I bowl,” he added.

Nannes was the only player caught in a bidding war between his Indian Premier League (IPL) team Delhi Daredevils and his home team Victoria Bushrangers for the Champions League, which is scheduled for October.

Though the Daredevils won bid due to a contractual clause, which gives preference to the IPL, but Daredevils will have to compensate Bushrangers with 200,000 dollars, keeping the three million dollar first prize money in mind.

“I’d signed an agreement with Delhi so I didn’t really have a choice. It’s an awkward situation for sure, but cricket is a funny game,” Nannes said.

“In the last 12 months I’ve played for six sides or something like that, so we’re all used to playing against each other. We’ll have a beer afterwards and we’ll go back and play together back home,” he added. (ANI)

Gayle, Murli, among top stars being eyed by Victoria for T20 squad

Melbourne, June 25 (ANI): Victoria is set to add a second international cricketer to its squad in a bid to reach a fifth consecutive Twenty20 Big Bash final next summer.

The Bushrangers on Wednesday confirmed they had signed West Indies all rounder Dwayne Bravo for the 2009-10 series, and another big name is likely to be added to the squad before Christmas Day.

West Indies captain Chris Gayle, as well as several Sri Lankans, including opener Tillakaratne Dilshan, legendary spinner Muthiah Muralidaran, pacer Lasith Malinga, and veteran bowler Chaminda Vaas are in contention.

Dilshan’s performances in the World Cup and the Indian Premier League make him hot property, but given he played in the IPL for Delhi Daredevils, coached by Bushrangers coach Greg Shipperd, Victoria could be a good choice for the Sri Lankan.

Cricket Australia this year changed its rules to allow states to sign two internationals instead of just one. It is underwriting the cost in its desire to continue to improve the profile of the domestic Twenty20 championship, The Herald Sun reports.

The two Big Bash finalists qualify for the Champions Trophy tournament and Victoria is moving quickly to protect its standing as the most successful state in recent years. (ANI)

Champions League: McCullum unlikely to dump Otago for New South Wales

Otago (New Zealand), May 27 (ANI): New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum is unlikely to turn his back on Otago to play for New South Wales in the Champions League Twenty20 tournament in India in October.

The odds of him doing so are about 100-1, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

McCullum is eligible for both NSW and Otago, having played for the Sydneysiders in the Australian Twenty20 final last season, and the Herald reported yesterday that NSW would make an approach.

Regulations state that, if a player is eligible for more than one Champions League team, his overseas side must pay his home side 250,000 US dollars transfer fee to secure his services.

Otago chief executive Ross Dykes confirmed he had spoken to McCullum, who is in England, and without giving the game away Dykes gave the impression the wicketkeeper-batsman would be remaining loyal to his home province.

“You won’t find anyone more passionate about Otago than Brendon, but let’s wait and see what happens, there hasn’t even been an official offer yet,” Dykes said.

Otago would be in danger of being outclassed without McCullum, a fact not lost on Dykes.

NSW are looking at McCullum after losing their big-hitting batsman David Warner to the Delhi Daredevils for 250,000 American dollars. (ANI)

South African batting set to thrive in England

Cape Town, May 26 (ANI): South Africa, batsmen are surely going to thrive at the ICC World Twenty20 event in England, which going to start in June, if the Indian Premier League is a reasonable yardstick for judging their form.

This will be particularly true in the batting department, where several Proteas stars boasted imperious statistics from the just-finished IPL: There were four of them among the top 11 run-scorers at the IPL.

AB de Villiers of Delhi Daredevils was third on the overall list with 465 runs, JP Duminy of Mumbai Indians sixth with 372 runs, Herschelle Gibbs of the triumphant Deccan Chargers seventh with 371 runs and Jacques Kallis (Bangalore Royal Challengers) 11th with 361 runs.

The World Twenty20, which starts on June 5, will provide a better chance to the Proteas as they will take some of the best “form” batsmen in the T20 format into the event, Sports 24 reports.

A lone concern batting-wise is for the Proteas is poor form of captain Graeme Smith, but in a perverse way his reduced workload, as a result, may serve as a “freshening” factor for him at the orld Twenty20. (ANI)

McCullum may play for New South Wales in Champions League Twenty20 tourney

Sydney, May 26 (ANI): New South Wales Cricket are poised to offer Otago 250,000 American dollars for Brendon McCullum’s services in the inaugural Champions League Twenty20 tournament after losing David Warner to the Delhi Daredevils.

In a merry-go-round of international stars, Warner is likely to feature for Delhi and McCullum could play for NSW in the tournament, which was expanded from eight to 12 teams at the weekend, and will be played in India from October 8 to 23, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

“There is no doubt having Brendon McCullum in your team increases your chances of a win, that is an undeniable fact,” Cricket NSW chief executive David Gilbert said.

“It’s about ensuring we have got all the bases covered. [Making Otago an offer] is certainly something we will consider. It is a cost-neutral exercise,” he added.

Otago have not ruled out the possibility of taking the cash in exchange for their highest-profile player.

“Given the fact he has played for them in the last 12 months, I think it could happen,” Otago chief executive Ross Dykes said.

“You can’t ignore figures like that. But on the other hand, you have loyalty reasons for which you wouldn’t want to do it. Brendon would have to be involved in these discussions,” he added.

The Champions League includes the best domestic Twenty20 sides from around the world. The initial plan was to feature eight teams – two each from India, Australia and South Africa, with one from Pakistan and England.

But after Pakistan refused to clear its players to travel to India – a stance taken after the fallout of the Mumbai bombings – organisers have revised the tournament.

Now there is a third Indian team (Delhi) to join the IPL’s finalists Deccan and Bangalore, and additional teams from Sri Lanka (Wayamba), the West Indies (Trinidad and Tobago), Otago and the two finalists from England’s domestic tournament to be decided on August 25.

NSW and Victoria had already qualified, along with South Africa’s Cape Cobras and Eagles. (ANI)

Royal Challengers to take on Deccan Chargers in IPL-2 final

Johannesburg (South Africa), May 24 (ANI): The Anil Kumble-led Royal Challengers, Bangalore (RCB), which has won seven of its last nine matches, will take on the Adam Gilchrist-inspired Deccan Chargers in the final of the second edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday evening.

The match will be played in the Bull Ring in the New Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The IPL in South Africa has been no less than a Bollywood flick. After all the action, drama and heartbreaks, Lalit Modi’s brainchild will witness a fairy tale ending.

Last years bottom two teams made it to the top two this season, where the Deccan’s story has many heroes, but none can surpass the contribution made by skipper Adam Gilchrist at the top and the purple cap holder R P Singh.

As for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, they gave the much surprised twist in the tale in the second semi-final. A victory against the Chennai Super Kings, which will taste even sweeter than the best of wine, brewed by this none other than team owner Vijay Mallya.

With a nail-bitter all set to take place, all eyes will be on the star players from both sides.

For the Deccan Chargers, their strength lies in the explosive opening pair of Adam Gilchrist and Herchelle Gibbs, followed by a gutsy Andrew Symonds and hugely talented Rohit Sharma.

However, the team lacks the depth plus the inconsistency in the bowling department. The purple cap holder R P Singh has been the lone warrior for the Chargers. The team has the opportunity to keep the winning momentum going and shed the tag of underachievers. But, the threat of having lost badly to their opponents on Thursday is still fresh on the minds of the players.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore, after almost being down and out, scripted one of the most memorable turnarounds under Anil Kumble’s leadership, which is undoubtedly one of their biggest strengths. However, inconsistency has been the team’s prime enemy. But the team has an opportunity to prove the critics wrong by making use of Manish Pandey’s sizzling form and their disciplined bowling attack led by their skipper.

The team will be a bundle of nerves with expectations rising, and once dubbed to be a Test team will go all out to win this prestigious T20 title.

As per the odds, a resurgent team Bangalore looks better after each outing, but they are not the favourites with the punters. After Gilly’s flambouyant willow show against the Delhi Daredevils in the first semi-final, the odds tilt towards the Deccan Chargers at 1.80 and Bangalore will have to be content with 2.20.

The weather, which has been hold and cold in South Africa, is the key factor in today’s grand finale. With a partly cloudy sky predicted and a minimal chance of rainfall, the blankets will be needed in the dug outs, as the minimum temperature moves a little further down at 6 degrees. (ANI)

I was inspired by Tendulkar knock: Pandey

Centurion, May 22 (IANS) Indian Premier League’s new star Manish Pandey said his role model Sachin Tendulkar’s knock in the first match against Delhi Daredevils gave him the confidence to make the most of the opportunity to open the innings against Deccan Chargers.

Pandey scored 114 against Deccan Chargers to propel Royal Challengers to a 12-run victory Thursday that helped them finish third in the IPL standings. It was also first century by any Indian player in IPL.

Pandey said he drew inspiration from Tendulkar’s 46 against Daredevils.

“When I saw Tendulkar batting I somehow felt that I can also do it on this track. I am a great admirer of Tendulkar,” he said.

Pandey also said it was the backing of the captain Anil Kumble and coach Ray Jennings that gave him the confidence to open the innings.

“In the team meeting he (Kumble) told me that I would open the innings. He said he has faith in me and told me to back my abilities. He said the track looked good and no matter how badly I played I would still score good runs,” Pandey was quoted as saying in the IPL website.

“He (Ray Jennings) is a fantastic coach. He told me to play my natural game. He told me not to fear failure and to have fun in the centre.”

Before his rise to IPL stardom, Pandey played three matches for the Mumbai Indians in the inaugural IPL. He batted twice, and scored just three of his runs in one of those innings. This year, he added two runs to that tally in the couple of games he played.

“It is amazing. I just thought I would back myself and it worked. I realised only when I reached 87 that I could make a century here. I wanted to grab the opportunity with both the hands. I am happy to match A.B. de Villiers’ feat of scoring a century in the IPL in South Africa.”

“I told myself that I would play a ball on merit. Once I got my timing and swing of the bat right, I knew I could bat through the innings.”

Pandey, who represented India in the U-19 World Cup in 2008, wanted to join the Army but now he wants to continue playing cricket.

“I think the plan has changed now. I just had an option that if cricket would not work for me then I would join the Army.”

Asked whether he got frustrated while warming the benches, Pandey said: “It is part of the game. Sometime you get a chance and sometimes you don’t. I got my chance and I did well.”

Sehwag, Gambhir shine in Delhi Daredevils victory over Mumbai Indians

Centurion, May 21 (ANI): Delhi Daredevils skipper Verender Sehwag and opener Gautam Gambhir led their team to a thumping victory over Mumbai Indians on Thursday.

Delhi Daredevils won the toss and elected to field first.

Mumbai made a shaky start, losing three quick wickets — Sanath Jayasuriya (0), J. P. Duminy (9) and Mohammad Ashraful (2) — as they stuttered to 31 for 3 in the first six overs.endulkar played a captain’s knock and scored 46 off 41 deliveries with eight fours. But best knock of the inning was played by Ajinkya Rahane who scored 56 off 41 deliveries with five fours and two sixes.

Mumbai Indians scored 165 for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs.

Chasing a victory target of 166, Delhi Daredevils got to a cracking start when its openers Gambhir and David Warner scored 36 runs in just 3.3 overs.

The partnership broke when Warner mistimed a Dhawal Kulkarni delivery to Mohammad Asharful’s hand.

After Warner’s departure, Gambhir and Sehwag took their team to a score of 104. Gambhir scored 47 of 38 deliveries with seven fours.

Sehwag played a cracking knock after a long time and hit five fours and two sixes in his 27 balls- 50 runs knock.

For Mumbai Indians, Harbhajan Singh took four wickets. (ANI)

Kolkata Knight Riders strongest IPL brand

Bangalore, May 21 (ANI/Business Wire India): Despite their poor cricket performance, the Kolkata Knight Riders have emerged as the strongest IPL brand.

UK’s Intangible Business, a world leading brand valuation company, in collaboration with MTI Consulting, a fast growing international strategy consultancy, have just released the IPL Brand Value Scoreboard 2009 – a pioneering valuation aimed at measuring the strengths of the 8 IPL Franchises

Sharukh Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), with a Brand Value of USD 22 Million tops the Brand Value Table, closely followed by Delhi Daredevils (USD 19M), Chennai Super Kings (USD 18M) and Mukesh Ambani’s Mumbai Indians at USD 17 M. Last year’s winners Rajasthan Royals are at the bottom of the table with a value of USD 10 M.

Richard Yoxon, International Director, Intangible Business, believes that “‘winning games is not enough to build a successful sports brand. Teams need to engage the local community, attract star players who inspire a wide audience and develop a strong marketing communications programme.”

Further explaining the rationale and methodology, the CEO of MTI Consulting Hilmy Cader said, “Brand values are a reflection of a brand’s ability to generate future income. It is a forward looking study that uses historic performance and future trends to predict future activity. 2008 publicly available sales data was gathered for each franchise. To determine the strength of the brands, each brand was scored on a series attributes that underpin the power and reach of the each brand. These attributes are a mixture of hard measures and soft measures of brand strength sourced from publically available information and from a qualitative panel of cricket fans from each test playing nation.

Using this data, each brand was then valued using the relief-from-royalty methodology”

Significant sums have been invested in acquiring the team franchises and the race is on to capture the hearts and minds of cricket fans to develop a strong club culture modelled on the success of the world’s most popular sports brands.

While the playing squads will change and the success of each team will fluctuate over time, the brand is the constant that unites supporters and is ultimately responsible for driving the long-term commercial sustainability and success of the IPL franchises.

“Which of the IPL franchises will become Twenty20′s equivalent of Manchester United, Real Madrid or LA Lakers?” asked Hilmy Cader, CEO of MTI Consulting. (ANI)

‘I just stick to my game plan’, says Proteas star De Villiers

Cape Town, May 20 (ANI): Proteas and Delhi Daredevils batsman A B de Villiers might look like a possessed sage in full flight, but he pins his success on sticking to his game plan.

De Villiers, speaking after yet another brilliant knock against the Rajastan Royals on Sunday night, said that it was about giving himself a chance to settle at the crease before he attempted to dominate a bowling attack.

“I think I have been following the same game plan for the last two years now.

Whether I play tests, ODIs or Twenty20 cricket I give myself a chance to get my eye in and get used to the conditions and always try to get through the first 20 balls, and from there on, I try to express myself,” said De Villiers at the press conference in Johannesburg.

According to Sports 24, De Villiers has scored 405 runs at an average of 67.50 and a strike rate of 135.45 per hundred balls in the IPL thus far, and trails only the currently indomitable Matthew Hayden (546 runs) in the runs table.

Together with Tillakaratne Dilshan, who is seventh on the list with 329 runs, De Villiers has been crucial to the Daredevil cause, especially with Gautum Gambhir and Virender Sehwag experiencing indifferent form.

Darren Berry, director of coaching with the Rajastan Royals, had only praise for De Villiers.

“Not only is he a great talent, but also he is a great thinking cricketer as well. In the heat of a Twenty20 battle that is exactly what you need. I think we were given an exhibition innings,” said Berry. (ANI)

Abdulla emerging as Proteas Twenty20 specialist bowler

Cape Town (South Africa), May 5 (ANI): Yusuf Abdulla is being looked at as a genuine, specialist Twenty20 bowler.

The 26-year-old Dolphins and Kings XI Punjab left-arm seamer has confirmed as much during the early stages of the Indian Premier League.

Abdulla has carried his domestic form compellingly into the IPL spotlight, putting a disastrous start to the tournament well behind him to become a trump card for the Kings XI attack.

The Delhi Daredevils’ Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag at Newlands flogged the stoutly built customer for 19 runs in a solitary over on IPL debut, reports Sports24.

He was then a little iffy again as his side lost a second match on the trot, to Kolkata Knight Riders at his Kingsmead home venue, with Abdulla going for 20 runs in two overs.

But a turnaround in the Kings XI’s fortunes – victory in each of their next two outings – has been accompanied by a simultaneous, quite dramatic upswing in fortunes for the South African.

His seven dismissals have come at an average of only 13 and economy rate of 8.27 – borderline acceptable in this format anyway, but even better when you consider the punishment he had taken in the first two matches. (ANI)

Oz bowler Nannes living his IPL dream

Cape Town (South Africa), May 1 (ANI): Dirk Nannes would never in his wildest dreams have thought that he would be playing cricket in South Africa, let alone in an extravaganza filled with such mega-stars as the Indian Premier League.

But after setting up the Delhi Daredevils’ victory over the top IPL dog Deccan Chargers at SuperSport Park on Thursday with his left-arm, fast, swing bowling, this 32-year-old Australian has catapulted himself to the forefront of the cricketing world.

His is a story that is truly fascinating one, involving skiing, the saxophone and Japanese.

The first question to answer is why the 32-year-old did not even come close to appearing in the recent gripping series between Australia and South Africa. He has never come close to selection for the Australian national team and, even if he continues to shine in the IPL, he will not be playing for Ricky Ponting’s men in the Twenty20 World Cup in England in June.

“I don’t think I can be chosen for Australia for the T20 World Cup because I wasn’t in the preliminary squad of 30 that has already been named. But I’ll be in the Holland squad because I have a Dutch passport through my parents.

“I never had any real aspirations to play international cricket, I just kind of fell into it. I always played in the backyard with my brother, but I was in the thirds at school and in the thirds at my club side,” Nannes explained.

Nannes made a sluggish start to his career as a cricketer mainly due to the fact that he was an accomplished skier. The Victorian travelled the world competing in World Cup skiing events, so he is an athlete in every sense of the word.

It was only once his skiing career ended that a previously hidden talent for cricket emerged.

“After skiing, someone said I should go to my local club and try and get a game in the park.”

A flurry of wickets followed and “a couple of years later, someone said I should try to play first-class cricket” – and a first-class debut followed in 2005/6.

He was instrumental in Victoria winning Australia’s domestic twenty20 title in 2007/8 and he enjoyed a stint with Middlesex last year before Daredevils coach Greg Shipperd, who also coaches Victoria, signed him up for the IPL.

Nannes has a place in the starting line-up thanks to the fact that fellow Australian Glenn McGrath is still struggling to get over the tragic fact that his wife died last year after a long fight with cancer.

“To play ahead of the best fast bowler in history is unbelievable, I have to pinch myself. But he’s been fantastic, always offering me support and help. I wasn’t expecting too much when I came here, so when I heard I was going to play in the first game I was really happy for the opportunity,” Sports24 quotes Nannes, as saying.
Nannes, who was a student of the saxophone at Melbourne University and admits to a passable mastery of speaking Japanese, said his dreams of being a fast bowler were restricted to the days he fell asleep on the couch with a piece of salami in his hand watching West Indian greats Curtley Ambrose, Malcolm Marshall and Joel Garner rip through the Australian batting in the 1980s.
