Robinho dances to Brazil’s tune

(Reuters) – Robinho’s club career has often been a messy affair punctuated by tantrums, walkouts and long-running transfer sagas.

Sports

His international career, however, could hardly be more different. When in the yellow shirt of Brazil, Robinho has been reliability personified, never complaining and always feeling at home.

One of the few players who performs better for his country than club, the King of the Stepovers has been almost ever-present for Brazil in the four years Dunga has been coach.

His only moan since Brazil arrived in South Africa is that his team mates cannot follow his goal celebrations.

“There are a lot of stiff waists in the team — Kaka, Luis Fabuloso,” he said. “I want to see if they can dance a little better.”

Robinho burst onto the scene as an 18-year-old with Santos in 2002 when his precocious dribbling helped them win the Brazilian championship.

One of the most replayed moments of his career came in the final against Corinthians when he performed seven stepovers before provoking a defender into giving away a penalty.

But he fell out with Santos three years later when they initially refused to sell him to Real Madrid. Robinho boycotted training sessions in protest before the move finally went through.

His three seasons with Real ended in a similar fashion, an unsavoury transfer saga finally landing him at Manchester City rather than Chelsea, the team he had publicly stated he had wanted to join.

Despite scoring plenty of goals for City, Robinho never seemed happy in England and at one stage was fined for walking out on a training camp in the Canary Islands.

At the start of this year, he was loaned back to Santos and, despite clearly enjoying himself on his return home, is now in the middle of yet more speculation about his club future, with Turkey’s Besiktas appearing a possible buyer.

Yet, while all this has been going on, Robinho’s international career has flourished.

He was top scorer with six goals when Brazil won the Copa America three years ago and has also won two Confederations Cup medals with his country.

He played in 15 of Brazil’s 18 World Cup qualifiers, missing only the last three when the team had already qualified. Still only 26, he has already played 73 internationals, scoring an impressive 25 goals.

Even when playing for Brazil there is still something of a “moleque” — which roughly translates as naughty schoolboy — about him. After a 3-0 win in Chile, he admitted daubing a message to his hosts on the dressing-room wall.

It read: “There must be respect for the best team in the world.”

Robinho has looked sharp in Brazil’s warm-up matches, scoring once in the 3-0 win in Zimbabwe and twice in the 5-1 demolition of Tanzania.

One of only four forwards in their 23-man squad, he is also one of the few capable of unlocking a defense with a moment of individual inspiration.

Former striker Tostao said that the World Cup is a chance for Robinho to finally fulfill the potential he has shown in flashes throughout his career but which he has been unable to produce on a consistent basis.

“Robinho has given signs that he can shine in the World Cup and stand out in world football,” said Tostao in his newspaper column.

“With the exception of Robinho, the Brazilian team today has very little individual inspiration,” he wrote. “But Robinho has always had talent.”

Michelle Obama donates inaugural gown to educational facility Smithsonian

Washington, March 10 (ANI): Michelle Obama has donated the white gown she wore at the inauguration to the Smithsonian, saying it helped the public “connect with a moment in history in a very real way.”

During her appearance at the Museum of American History, Mrs Obama said she was humbled but also “a little embarrassed by all the fuss being made” over “the dress.”

“Like many of you, I’m not used to people wanting to put things I’ve worn on display…So, all of this is a little odd, so forgive me,” the Politico quoted her, as saying.

However, the First Lady did admit the significance of her dress and others worn by former Presidents’ wives.

She said: “Each gown places us right in the moment and makes us wonder about the intimate details of that evening, like how did she feel in the dress?

“Did her feet hurt in those shoes? How many times did her husband step on that train?”

Looking at the gown, which she hadn’t seen after the inauguration, Mrs Obama said it reminded her of the “freezing cold” day her husband assumed office.

She said: “That day was so hectic for us.

“And I remember the inaugural parade, and how the president and I stood, and we waved until every last band walked by.”

And she revealed she got ready for the inaugural balls later that night in less than an hour.

“Ladies, if you can believe that,” she said.

Mrs Obama recalled: “I remember how just luscious I felt as the president and I were announced onto the stage for the first of many dances. And I’ll cherish that moment for the rest of my life.”

She added that it is “one of the most tangible things I have left to remember that day.

“And that’s why it will always hold a special place in my heart,” she said.

Jason Wu, the gown’s designer said: “The countless hours that you can see that he spent sewing this piece made my night even more special, and now I am proud that millions of visitors will be able to see just how talented this young man is.” (ANI)

Slurry Mischa Barton dances solo at G- star after-bash

New York, Sep 18 (ANI): Mischa Barton got a little too high at the G- star after-party at the Bowery Hotel, where she was “slurring her words” and even started dancing on her own.

Barton, who was recently had to go for involuntary hospitalisation for wisdom-teeth complications, stumbled up to the check-in table and started asking for the DJ.

“She kept saying, in a really spacey, weird British accent, ‘Like, I’m with the deejay. I to tally know the deejay. I’m here for the deejay,’” the New York Post quoted a source as saying.

The insider added: “She was slurring her words.”

After being let in, Barton “needed to be escorted to the deejay booth” where she proceeded to “stand for about an hour, dancing in her own world. I don’t think her eyes were open to full capacity — or even half capacity-the whole time she was there,” said the source. (ANI)

Jo Wood taking tips from Mick Jagger to win ‘Strictly Come Dancing’

London, Sep 4 (ANI): Jo Wood, who is participating in ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, is getting performance tips from none other than Mick Jagger for winning the show.

The ex-model has been chasing her ex-hubby Ronnie Wood’s flamboyant bandmate for advice on how to shine in the contest.

It is believed that Jo, 53, is ultra-competitive and wants to gain an advantage over her younger rivals, such as The Bill’s Ali Bastian and ex-EastEnder Natalie Cassidy, both 26.

“Jo’s been after some performance tips from Mick Jagger,” the Sun quoted a BBC1 insider as saying.

“She knows that he’s got lots of experience as a showman and she really wants to make sure she dazzles in the competition.

“So who better than the Rolling Stones’ frontman for some advice? The pair are pals and she’s really keen to do her best on Strictly,” added the insider.

Jo, paired with hunk Brendan Cole, has been working very hard and practising the dances for hours on end, which has left her with painful feet.

Michael Jackson’s death: ‘He’s a true legend’

Zarina Henderson of Sylmar made a spur-of-the-moment decision to stop by the Jackson compound with her two children, Avazia and Garrid Tillis, at about 9 a.m. today.

Henderson said her daughter had asked where Jackson lived, so she decided to take the kids to see the home in which he grew up in Encino.

“Michael is the major legend, he’s a real legend, he’s a true legend,” she said.

Henderson said she wondered why legends seem to die so early. Although Elvis Presley may have been the king of rock ‘n’ roll, Jackson brought more people of different backgrounds together, she said.

“He broke the color barrier in music,” she said.

Henderson said Jackson’s music was universal. For example, her father, Oprey Anderson, is 74 and loves Jackson, she said. Her children, 12 and 9, like Jackson, too.

“He touched people from all ages,” Henderson said.

She remembered emulating Jackson’s moves growing up, and said she owned a replica of the signature red jacket, a Jackson doll and a white glove.

“You couldn’t tell me I didn’t have his dances down,” she said jokingly.

Miss World jury was unfair, says Parvathy

JOHANNESBURG/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congratulations poured for Parvathy Omanakuttan for making “India proud” despite missing the Miss World 2008
crown by a whisker but the lanky Kerala beauty feels she was done in by the jury alleging that its decision to adjudge her only second best was “unfair”.

“I have performed better than others in the personality and question-answer round. This is not just that. All those who watched it yesterday felt like that. I feel the jury’s decision was unfair”, Parvathy(21), who was adjudged the first runner up from among 108 contestants at the Miss World pageant in Johannesburg, told Kerala’s India Vision channel.

“I had confidence. I could do well. The question-round did not come as a challenge to me considering my background in literature,” said Parvathy, who hails from Changanassery in Kottayam in “God’s own Country”, as hopes soared in India that she would bring back the coveted title which was last won by an Indian girl in 2000 when her name was announced in the five semi-finalists.

There were mixed emotions at Parvathy’s mother’s home in Madapally village in Changanassery. Some relatives felt she deserved to win the title ahead of the Russian blonde Ksenya Sukhinova while others thought it was a proud moment for India for coming second position warding off competition from over 100 beauties from around the world.

“Well done Parvathy! We are all proud of u!!! Successful exit matters more than a favourable entrance…. U made urself count… another feather in India’s cap..,” a fan commented on the official website of the Miss World contest.

Another comment noted that though the Malayalee did not win the crown her coming second was a splendind achievement overcoming stiff competition.

“We are proud of you!,” the mail said.

Reita Faria (1966), Aishwarya Rai (1994), Diana Hayden (1997), Yukta Mookhey (1999) and Priyanka Chopra (2000) were the previous five Indian beauty queens who had won the coveted title.

A compatriot from Kerala wrote to the 5 feet 9 inch- tall Parvathy that she wishes to send her “oaraayiram poochendukal, Parvathii, ellavidha ashamsakalum” (1,000 bouquets and all the very best wishes).

Another fan, Malavika wrote that the feat was “still an amazing achievement!!!”

“Best of luck for the future!!!! I am a pageant freak and I was so happy that our country made a mark at Miss World 2008. waiting for your return!!!!!!!!,” she wrote.

Parvathy, hailing from Kottayam, grew up in Mumbai. Having graduated in Arts, she has studied Sociology, Psychology & English Literature.

Parvathy’s ambition is to further her studies in Psychology to learn more about human behaviour in depth, her bio-data on the website says.

The lanky beauty is an ardent sports fan with a special interest in basketball, badminton and swimming.

She has a special talent for whistling. She likes listening to music, singing, reading, glass painting, acting, modelling, dancing (varying from local dances to ballroom and Latin dances) and learning new languages.

Parvathy is also very fond of a beautiful quote by former President APJ Abdul Kalam ‘Dreams are not what you see in your sleep, but dreams
are that, which do not allow you to sleep’, hence her motto in life is ‘Dream with your eyes open’.
