Buzz bombs on the dance floor

He may have once walked on the moon, but Buzz Aldrin had a more difficult time gliding across the ballroom floor on Dancing With The Stars.

The 80-year-old astronaut was voted off the popular US television show last night after failing to impress the judges with his waltz.

The judges said Aldrin seemed to do more walking than waltzing, giving him and his dance partner a score of 13 – the night’s lowest.

“I did this show for the fighter pilots out there, the military people and the elder geezers like me who would just like to see an elder come back week after week on the show,” Aldrin said after learning his fate.

Aldrin said he also wanted to raise awareness of the US space program through the show.

As he did his final dance, the other cast members saluted him.

Motel Deception dances into awards shortlist

ABC-commissioned short film project Motel Deception has been selected as a finalist in the 2010 ReelDance Australian/New Zealand Awards.

Australian choreographer Chrissie Parrott and producer Nancy Jones created the cross-platform media project, which screened on TV and online, with a short film as its centrepiece.

Motel Deception was commissioned by the ABC, Screenwest and the Department of Culture and the Arts and supported by the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA).

The 2010 ReelDance “International Dance On Screen” festival and tour will open in Sydney on Thursday May 13 as a co-production with Performance Space.

Motel Deception will be screened in the awards programs on Sunday May 16. Prize winners will be announced on the night.

The festival will then tour nationally, visiting Melbourne’s Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and Dance House from May 28 to 30 before heading to Perth, Adelaide, Darwin, Alice Springs and Brisbane.

It will then visit New Zealand, stopping in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington on dates to be announced.

In Motel Deception – a fast-paced physical theatre work – two contemporary dancers, Sally Blatchford as Claire and Richard Cilli as Dexter, portray the journey of two characters in a seedy motel room.

“A unique component of Motel Deception is that the website contains over 350 different clips of the film, shot from various angles,” producer Jones said.

“So a person who is interested in dance and wants to study the movement could do a forensic examination and look at a particular shot or movement from the top, the side and other views.”

In 2008, Parrott and Jones with Jonathan Mustard jointly received the WA Dance award for excellence in digital design for their groundbreaking dance collaboration Metadance.

Motel Deception was developed and produced by ABC TV in association with Blue Moon Film and Video.

MJ’s new signature dance move, Penguin, set to sweep fans

London, September 19 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s completely new signature dance move in a new footage while rehearsing for his comeback concerts may soon become a rage amongst his fans.

The King of Pop, in the move, being called as the Penguin, was seen flapping his right arm up and down very quickly as his body shimmied while standing on the spot.

Jackson was spotted doing the hilarious Penguin in the video, thought to be from the This Is It movie rehearsal footage, as renowned choreographer Kenny Ortega coached and watched him over, reports the Sun.

The move was due to expand his signature repertoire of dance steps including the legendary Moonwalk, Anti-Gravity Lean, and Crotch Grab.

It would be no surprise if kids and adults tried to ape the Jackson Penguin, which West End star Ricko Baird said was not easy to imitate.

He said: “Michael was just so talented and he made it all look so easy. Some of his moves like the Moonwalk – and now the Penguin – are actually very difficult and need a lot of practice.”

Business analyst Christian Severina, 35, London, said: “I love Michael Jackson and I love his dancing. But this was really tricky to do it with the same grace and speed he does it. I ended up looking like I was having a fit.”

Hannah Turner, 16, of Essex, added: “Oh my god I look like such a wally. Only Michael Jackson can make that look cool.” (ANI)

UK fitness TV teaches bhangra workout class!

London, September 17 (ANI): A new British TV station, dedicated entirely to fitness, is offering a string of classes, including those on Bhangra.

The Fitness TV, a 24-hour station, also hosts a high heel workout class for the women who refuse to get out of their beloved stilettos. Other workouts include those based on Salsa, Hip Hop and Disco.

“Just like a personal trainer, the channel allows viewers to tailor workouts to their own levels of fitness and interests and can be easily scheduled around busy lives,” the Sun quoted a spokesman for the TV shows as saying.

“Programmes range from children’s classes including a mobility and balance workout for pre-schoolers, kids’ yoga and street dance for teenagers, while pensioners and the less mobile are offered Chairobics.

“For the more adventurous, there are boot camp-style workouts and dance-based exercise sessions for Strictly Come Dancing fans, including Bhangra, Cheerleader and 70s Disco.

“There’s even a High Heels workout for more glamorous viewers,” the spokesman added.

Fitness TV founder Luan Underwood, a former personal trainer and mum-of-two, said: “We are positioning the channel as an additional workout option, not as a replacement to gyms, fitness and wellbeing classes.

“We would like to capture the imagination of the 80 per cent of UK citizens that have never visited a gym and inspire them to do so.

“We also aim to reach people unable to visit fitness facilities, perhaps because they have young children, or time pressures that make it difficult to get to the gym for a few weeks.

“With Fitness TV, people can squeeze in a session at a time to suit them, and because the classes are constantly being updated, they’ll be more motivated to stick to them than they would an exercise DVD,” Underwood added. (ANI)

Soon, MJ’s ‘Thriller’ doll

London, Sept 8 (ANI): Michael Jackson has come alive in a new avatar – a lifelike doll.

The doll is inspired by the King of Pop’s 1983 Thriller music video, which showed him turning into a zombie.

The Hong Kong-based Hot Toys is the creator of the doll, which emphasizes most aspects of the late pop legend’s personality, even his trademark white socks, reports the Daily Star.uyers also have the option to exchange the doll’s head and clothes for the sinister, hollowed-eyed undead look.

The toy has 32 movable points, which enable it to reproduce MJ’s dance steps.

The doll will be available to MJ’s fans in Hong Kong and Japan only, where it will be released later this year. (ANI)

The devoted pair met at a YMCA dance in Plymouth in 1926.

Milford and Anita had married in 1928.

Milford’s son, also called Frank, said: “She’s very upset obviously.”

Speaking of his father’s health, Frank said he had always been “as sharp as a tack” despite being frail.

475 MJ fans attempt world record dancing together to ‘Thriller’ in Leicester

London, August 30 (ANI): A group of Michael Jackson fans in Leicester attempted a world record for the most number of people dancing to the singer’s ‘Thriller’ in one place on his 51st birthday.

Some 475 people dressed as zombies packed into Orton Square participate in the event.

The current record is held by 242 dancers, who performed in Virginia in April this year.

“We wanted to celebrate his life and show people what an inspiration he is,” Sky News quoted Anand Bhatt, 29, the organiser of the attempt, as saying.

The mass dance was planned in April, two months before Michael Jackson died on June 25.

“His death just made us more determined to do this properly. With it being his birthday, it’s a fitting tribute,” said a woman participant.

Her sister added: “The mood has been vibrant throughout. I think it’s nicer today to do something positive, rather that dwelling on the circumstances surrounding his death.”

Adam, 10, said: “Michael Jackson’s my hero. I wish I could dance like him.”

While most dancers learnt the routine during free lessons at dance studios around Leicester, others practised the moves using tutorial videos posted online.

Although the even ran smoothly, its organisers are still waiting an official declaration from a Guinness World Record representative that the new record has been made. (ANI)

Britney went on tour to avoid $100m loss: Book

London, Aug 30 (ANI): Britney Spears was forced to hit the road just months after a public breakdown because she faced financial ruin, says the author of a new book.

Best-selling author and journalist Steven Dennis claims in a new book, ‘Britney: Inside The Dream’, that she stood to lose as much as 100 million dollars if she failed to honor the tour commitments that she made prior to her meltdown.

Dennis spent six months writing and researching the book, reports the Daily Express.

Robert Baker, the studio director at the Millenium Dance Complex where Britney regularly trains, told him: “If Britney didn’t go on tour she could have been hit for 100 million dollars because she was contractually obliged for another album and another tour and there was a deadline.

“The whole contract was set up and a timetable was in place before Britney had her meltdown.

“Had she quit and walked away then the recouped advances, penalties and accrued interest would have been near the 100-million-dollar mark – for someone estimated to be worth just 60 million dollars to 65 million dollars.”

Since announcing her world tour, critics have voiced their concerns that Britney was taking part in a gruelling nine-month world tour at a time when she remained mentally vulnerable.

Legally, she has been under the control of her father since February because of her mental problems.

Dennis adds, however: “I think the chief reason behind her tour was to protect Britney – firstly, to return her to an identity and routine in which she felt safe and secondly to safeguard her financially.” (ANI)

Mela Patt fair celebrated in Bhaderwah in Jammu and Kashmir

Bhaderwah (Jammu and Kashmir), Aug 28(ANI): Colourful folk dances marked the annual three-day fair ‘Mela Patt’ celebrations in Bhaderwah sub-division of Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district.

The festival, which concluded on Thursday, is celebrated every year after it was started by Raja Nagpal, the 16th century ruler of the then small principality of Bhaderkashi, now known as Bhaderwah.

The festival begins on Naag Panchami, festival dedicated to honour the snake God.

According to folklore, Mughal emperor Akbar wanted to make Raja Nagpal bow to him, but Nagpal would not bow before anyone except his Lord Vasuki Naag. The emperor summoned Nagpal and ordered to sever his head. But, when king’s men tried to cut his head a serpent came out from his turban.

Impressed by Nagpal’s spiritual powers, Akbar awarded him with a golden pot with precious stones and costly velvet robes embroidered with gold and silver as a token of his devotion to Vasuki Naag.

Every year during the festival the devotees take out a procession of the gifts presented to Nagpal.

“The pot you see was gifted by emperor Akbar to Raja Nagpal and every year it is taken out for display to the locals,” said Hari Krishan, a local.

The festival sees enthusiasts from across north-India, as they believe that their wishes will come true if they pray earnestly.

“Not only people from Jammu and Kashmir, but from people across north India come to see the festival. There is a saying that if someone asks for a wish it comes true,” said Naresh Gupta, another local.

Kyonsa (Sikkim), Aug 27(ANI): The local residents of Kyonsa region in Sikkim gathered in huge numbers on Thursday to take part in an event to promote their age-old rural game of bamboo pole climbing and pillow fighting.

The locals shouted and cheered as the participants climbed bamboo poles and battered each other in pillow fights – reviving a practice that is slowly dying in the face of modern sports like soccer and volleyball.

“Our main aim is to preserve this old system of sports. Nowadays, we mainly focus on sports like football, archery and volleyball but our aim is to keep this traditional style of sports alive in our rural areas and entertain the public on such an occasion,” said Sonam Bhutia, General Secretary of Kyonsa Samaj Organizing Committee.

Sonam further said this was also a way of preserving their identity and by promoting this form of sport in the rural areas, the youth will learn more about their own traditions and not be swayed by modern sports such as football.

“Such rural sports encourage us and bring out the best in the all the villages who come from different areas. Here people come and gather for an occasion like this one. In this way we can preserve our age old sports which our earlier generations have been playing from a very long time,” said Anand Lepcha, a local.

‘Special to take final Australian wicket to clinch Ashes’ says Swann

London, Aug 25(ANI): England cricketer Graeme Swann, who took the last Australian wicket to clinch the Ashes, has said that he has never experienced anything like the surge of emotion and happiness he felt after winning the Ashes.

Swann said that he would cherish the day and the experience for rest of his life, as he has seen all the phases in his career and the experience on the final day at The Oval beats it all.

“I’ve experienced some dark days in my career when I didn’t think I’d get into my county team, let alone play for England. But, however low I felt then is not comparable to how high I have felt since we won at The Oval. I would take 364 rubbish days a year just to have one like that,” Swann wrote in The Sun.

He highlighted that it was special to take the wicket, and said that he was praying for fellow bowler Steve Harmison to miss it.

“Harmison was bowling and the crowd was going mad but deep down I was thinking, ‘Don’t get him out, I want to finish this off!’ Honestly, I wouldn’t have minded if Harmy had got it,” he added.

Swann further said that the incident was so phenomenal, that he was confusion made it hard for him to decide whether to laugh, cry or dance around.

“Paul Collingwood said to me after the game that I should cherish the moment because it might not happen again. He was right. It was the best feeling I’ve ever had playing cricket. I doubt if I’ll ever feel that good again,” he added. (ANI)

Assam to revive Satriya Dance

Guwahati, Aug 25 (ANI): In order to promote the unique Satriya classical dance form of Assam among the people of the state as well as at the national and international level, the Satriya Sangeet Charkha Kendra (SSCK) organised a cultural program in Jorhat recently.

It was held at Satriya Mahotsabha in Rajabari, Jorhat with many renowned scholars and researchers stressing on the importance of preserving this beautiful dance.

The cultural program attracted large number of audience from all across the state.

Dr. Nirupama Mahanta, Convenor, Assam Satra Mahotsabha said, “These are the teachers of different Satriya music schools of Assam and they have received vast knowledge of Satriya dance, music and with different arts of Satriya from the resource persons.”

“Satriya dance has been recognised as a major Indian traditional dance form and accordingly it has come of age,” said Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, a audience.

Satriya dance was created by one of the great Assamese Vaishnavite Saint, Mahapurush Sankardeva in the fifteenth century.

It is an artistic way of presenting mythological teachings to the people.

Traditionally, only men performed Satriya dance as a part of their daily rituals or to mark special festivals. However, today, it is performed both by men and women and on themes other than mythology as well.

It is accompanied by musical compositions called borgeets, which are based on classical ragas played along with the khols (drums), taals (cymbals) and the flute.

The dance form has its origin in Majuli island, which is the seat of Assamese culture and tradition and the biggest river island in the world.

Oz Govt. not taking action on call for banning raunchy videos

Melbourne, Aug 21 (ANI): The Aussie Government is said to have decided not to take any action on banning raunchy music videos and sexual images that have been described as being too sexually explicit for children.

A Senate committee wanted stricter advertising controls and tighter classification laws on videos and ads.

According to the Herald Sun, the Government’s response to the committee was described by child development experts, and family and women’s groups last night as “pitiful” and “wishy washy”.

Raunchy videos including Jessica Simpson’s ‘These Boots are Made for Walking’, Christina Aguilera’s ‘Dirrty’, and Kylie Minogue’s ‘Spinning Around’ are among those cited by groups as being popular with children but having over-the-top sexualised dance music.

But the television and advertising industry will continue to be mostly self-regulated, and raunchy videos will still be allowed.

The Government said there was a “low level” of community concern about music videos, and said it had no power over the Advertising Standards Board, a private organisation.

Barbara Biggins, of the Australian Council on Children in the Media, said young children’s exposure to sex-charged videos was a serious concern.

“Children are increasingly exposed to a hyper-sexualised media in what has been described as the ‘pornification’ of our culture,” News.com.au quoted her as saying.

“This report does little to allay community concerns about the sexualisation of children in the media,” she said.

Julie Gale, of Kids Free 2B Kids, said the response showed a continued reluctance to respond to concerns about the sexualisation of children.

“It also fails to address many of the concerns of child development professionals and increasing evidence from research,” she said.

Family First senator Steve Fielding said the Government had gone soft on the issue.

“The response is weak. Someone’s got to them,” Senator Fielding said.

Women’s advocate and author Melinda Tankard Reist was also disappointed.

“It appears as though industry has got off lightly again,” she added.

Dozens of submissions to the committee charged that over-sexed media images were contributing to eating disorders, depression, anxiety, body image dissatisfaction, self-harm, low self-esteem, and children acting sexually. (ANI)

Bollywood actor Salman Khan prays for success of upcoming film

Mumbai, Aug 19 (ANI): Bollywood actor Salman Khan is keeping his finger crossed for success of upcoming film ‘Wanted’.

Produced by Boney Kapoor and directed by Prabhu Deva, the film features Ayesha Takia Azmi opposite Salman Khan apart from actors like Mahesh Manjrekar, Asseem Merchant.

“I have done lot of love stories, lot of comedies, many of them were not appreciated enough. In this film, I had the zest to work hard. I have done that. So, let’s see if it works and if it doesn’t,” he said.

The film is about Radhe, played by Salman Khan, who is a hardcore gangster, a sharpshooter and works for a dreaded Mafia.

He then finds love when the young and pretty Jhanvi, played by Ayesha Takia Azmi, professes her love for him.

Khan said the film is a combination of all the ingredients in good quantity and they all had to undergo good deal of training for it.

“Our films are usually a combination of all things in small proportions. Little bit dance, little bit romance and little bit comedy. But this film has everything in huge proportions, so had to train hard,” said Khan.

Khan has lent his voice to the title track of the film, composed by composer duo Sajid-Wajid.

He had last sung for the film, Pyaar Kiya to Darna Kya in 1998. (ANI)
