Amla, de Villiers hit tons as SA beat Windies

Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers scored hundreds as South Africa defeated West Indies by 66 runs in their rain-affected one-day international.

Amla anchored the top half of the South African batting with 102 from 109 balls, and de Villiers kept the momentum going with the same score from 101 balls, as the Proteas, put in to bat, reached 280 for seven from their rain-reduced 48 overs on a slow Vivian Richards Cricket Ground pitch on Saturday.

South Africa then dismissed West Indies, who had been set a Duckworth/Lewis target of 288, for 215 in 44.1 overs to clinch a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, which continues on Monday at this venue.

Morne Morkel was the most successful South African bowler with three wickets for 40 runs from eight overs, while Dale Steyn, Ryan McLaren, and Johan Botha collected two wickets apiece.

“We want to play well, and we want to win this series,” said South Africa captain Graeme Smith.

“We want to have a very successful tour of the Caribbean.

I have said this a number of times. We have a lot of bouncing back to do, following the Twenty20 World Cup, and we want to do it well.”

“This is just the first match, and the matches are very close together, so recovery is going to be important to us being successful.”

West Indies captain Chris Gayle, whose 45 from 39 balls was the home team’s top score, felt let down by the batting again.

“It’s one of those things that we can’t seem to catch a break with our batting, so we will have to go back to the drawing board,” said Gayle.

“We are not going to give-up. We know that we are not playing good cricket now.”

Steyn set West Indies back early, when he had Andre Fletcher caught at slip for four in the third over.

South Africa were put on the defensive, however, when Gayle gave West Indies a typically flourishing start.

Ryan McLaren had Dwayne Bravo caught behind for 15, and Morkel had Gayle caught in the deep to leave West Indies 69 for three in the 13th over.

The South Africans then saw Ramnaresh Sarwan make 38, and left-handed compatriot Narsingh Deonarine get 26 to stage a recovery with a stand of 61 for the fourth wicket.

Botha made the breakthrough in the 27th over, when Deonarine top-edged a sweep, and was caught at backward square leg, and Morkel bowled Sarwan, as West Indies slipped to 140 for five.

Kieron Pollard joined Denesh Ramdin, and they put on 52 for the sixth wicket.

Steyn returned for another spell, and bowled Ramdin for 17, when the batsman chopped on, and West Indies lost their last five wickets for 23 runs from 35 deliveries.

Amla, later named man-of-the-match, reached his second ODI hundred from 106 balls, when he steered a short, rising delivery from Pollard to third man for a single in the 33rd over.

De Villiers later reached his seventh ODI hundred from 99 balls, when he dragged a delivery from Ravi Rampaul through mid-on for a single in the 44th over.

They added 129 for the third wicket, after play started half-hour later than scheduled, and a near half-hour stoppage for rain further marred the match.

Amla put on 53 for the first wicket with Smith either side of the rain break before the Proteas’ captain edged a flat-footed drive, and was caught behind for 18 in the seventh over off Bravo, who also had Jacques Kallis caught at third man for one to leave South Africa 57 for two.

After de Villiers added 54 for the fourth wicket with left-hander JP Duminy, South Africa lost four wickets for 40 runs from the last 41 deliveries of their innings.

Bravo was the most successful West Indies bowler with three wickets for 40 runs.

South Africa thrash Windies by 66 runs in ODI

South Africa eased to a 66-run victory over West Indies thanks to centuries by Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers and some aggressive bowling in the first one-day international on Saturday.

West Indies’ batsmen wilted to 215 all out from 44.1 overs as they chased the tourists’ total of 280-7 from 48 overs which was powered by Amla and de Villiers who both scored 102.

Amla registered his second career ODI century while de Villiers struck his third ODI ton on the trot as they put on 129 for the third wicket to lay the foundation for a big total.

Amla struck eight fours at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds from 109 deliveries while de Villiers hit five fours and two sixes off 101 balls.

All-rounder Dwayne Bravo bowled with control to finish with figures of three for 40 from 10 overs.

In the run chase Chris Gayle top scored for the hosts with 45 from 39 balls including eight powerful fours while Kieron Pollard blasted 44 from 37 deliveries with five fours and a six.

Their efforts were not nearly adequate enough to threaten South Africa’s total as lanky pacer Morne Morkel captured three for 40 from eight overs. He was supported by Dale Steyn and Ryan McLaren (both two for 37) and Johan Botha (two for 47).

The second game in the five-match series will take place on Monday at the same venue before the teams move to Dominica for a double header and Jamaica for the final game.

‘Chokers’ South Africa eliminated from World T20 as Pak win crucial tie by 11 runs

St. Lucia, May 11 (ANI): South Africa’s dubious record of succumbing on crunch occasions continues as they fell short by 11 runs while chasing a modest total of 149 posted by Pakistan in a critical Super Eight stage match of the ICC T20 World Championship here.

Batting first, Pakistan’s top-order collapsed to 19 for 3,their worst performance in the first six overs in this tournament.

Salman Butt, the hero of the last match against New Zealand, failed to deliver and so did Khalid Latif, and Mohammad Hafeez.

Then came the Akmal brothers who started the recovery work. It was the younger Akmal, Umar, who shone with the bat hitting the South African bowlers out of the park on four occasions in his blistering 33 ball 51 run knock. Kamran made 37 from 33 with three fours and two sixes.

Skipper Shahid Afridi’s 18 ball innings of 30 runs had shades of the vintage ‘boom-boom’ Afridi, but more importantly it helped Pakistan reach a respectable total of 148 for seven in 20 overs.

Charl Langeveldt was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa, taking four for 19 in his quota of four overs, while Dale Steyn finished with a figures of one for 26.

Chasing a gettable target, South Africa’s batting order faltered inexplicably with none of the opening batsmen Graeme Smith or Herschelle Gibbs firing.

While Smith, who has been struggling with his form for quite some time now, looked rusty making a run a ball 13,Gibbs (3) gifted his wicket to medim pacer Abdul Razzaq.

Though AB deVilliers did showed some resistance hitting 53 of 41 balls, it proved to be all too late for the Proteas.

Saeed Ajmal was the prime destroyer of the South African innings taking four for 26 in his fours overs. Ajmal’s well-disguised ‘doosras’ baffled the South Africans, as none of the batsmen looked comfortable against him.

Ajmal was ably supported by Abdur Rehman who took 2 for 35. (ANI)

South Africa thrash Afghanistan by 59 runs to seal T20 super eight berth

Bridgetown, May 6 (ANI): After having being comprehensively thrashed by India in their first game, the Proteas came back strongly against Afghanistan, beating the newcomers by 59 runs in the last group match of the ICC World T20 Championship at the Kensington Oval here.

The win has ensured South Africa a place in the super-eight stage of the tournament.

Chasing a modest target of 140, Afghanistan were all out for 80 runs in 16 overs.

For Afghanistan, Mirwais Ashraf (23) and Hamid Hassan (22) were the two main contributors with the bat.

Morne Morkel was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa bagging four wickets for 20 runs, while he was ably supported by Charl Langeveldt and Dale Steyn who scalped two and three wickets respectively.

Earlier, Afghanistan captain Nowroz Mangal won the toss and put South Africa into bat.

Jacques Kallis (34) and skipper Graeme Smith (27) provided a brisk start to the innings.

Later, JP Duminy (25) and Albie Morkel (23) batted with patience to built up the innings on the platform provided by the openers, and posted a respectable target.

For Afghanistan, medium-pacer Hamid Hassan was the most successful bowler, claiming three wickets for 21 runs. (ANI)

Swann enters top 10 Reliance Test bowlers list

Dubai, Aug.24 (ANI): England off-spinner Graeme Swann has jumped no fewer than 17 places and into the top 10 in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers for the first time in his career.

The 30-year-old took eight wickets in the Oval Test match underlying his position as England’s top slow bowler and moving to 10th in the latest rankings.

Another England bowler to make an upward move is man of the match Stuart Broad, whose inspired five-wicket haul in the first innings set up the victory for the home team as Australia collapsed to 160 all out.

Broad gains 11 places to 13th spot in the rankings, level with Australia’s fast bowler Peter Siddle, who moves up four places after another consistent performance from the 24-year-old Victorian.

The bowling list is still headed by South Africa’s Dale Steyn with Muttiah Muralidaran of Sri Lanka second and Australia’s Mitchell Johnson hanging on to third.

In the batting rankings, a failure of Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara to fire in the first Test against New Zealand at Galle and Michael Clarke’s disappointing showing at the Oval has opened the door for India’s Gautam Gambhir, who returns to the number-one spot.

Sangakkara, who had been top prior to the Galle Test, scored eight and 46 in the match, which was not enough to keep him at the top. Clarke could only manage a total of three runs in the Oval Test, a disappointing return for him and one that drops him three places to fifth in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen.

Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardena has moved up two places to seventh in the batting list following his first-innings century against New Zealand.

Australia’s Ricky Ponting may have scored a battling half-century in the second innings but his overall match contribution did not save him from losing two places as he slips to ninth in the rankings.

Victorious captain Andrew Strauss was the stand-out England batsman of the series and his two half-centuries at the Oval were enough to move him up three spots to 12th position, level with South Africa’s AB de Villiers. Meanwhile, debutant Jonathan Trott has announced his name on the world stage with his crucial innings of 41 and 119 and, as a result, has joined the rankings in the unusually high position of 52nd spot.

The other main movers in the top 20 were both Sri Lankan with Thilan Samaraweera gaining four places to 16th position after his 159 in the first innings against the Black Caps and Tillakaratne Dilshan breaking into the top 20 after hugely impressive innings of 92 and 123 not out in Galle. (ANI)

Oz batsmen move up Reliance Mobile ICC player rankings

Dubai, July 13 (ANI): Australia’s batsmen are on the move in the ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen with three of them achieving career-best rankings after a nail-biting finish in the first Ashes Test against England at Cardiff.

pener Simon Katich, middle-order batsmen Marcus North and wicket-keeper Brad Haddin all scored centuries to help Australia declare its first innings at 674-6 in reply to England’s first innings score of 435. And for these efforts, all the three batsmen have been rewarded with big jumps in the rankings which are updated after every Test.

Katich, who scored 122, has gone up by four places and now sits in 14th position alongside India great Sachin Tendulkar. Marcus North, who struck an unbeaten 125, has rocketed 23 places to 43rd position while Haddin, who scored 121, has climbed six places to 30th spot.

Besides the trio, captain Ricky Ponting has also inched towards the top five after scoring an elegant 150 and is now in sixth place after swapping positions with Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardena, vice-captain Michael Clarke has replaced South Africa captain Graeme Smith in eighth place and opener Phillip Hughes has lifted himself two places to 33rd position.

Australia’s only disappointment is the fall of Mike Hussey whose first innings contribution of three has resulted in him dropping of the top 20 for the first time since his rapid rise up the table at the start of his international career.

England’s only batsman to make an upward movement is Paul Collingwood who has returned to the top 20 by climbing five places to 19th position after scoring two half-centuries in the match, including a gritty 74 in the second innings that spanned almost six hours of batting.

Three of the top four England batsmen – Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook and Ravi Bopara – have dropped in the latest rankings while Kevin Pietersen has managed to hang on to his 10th place.

England captain Strauss, who scored 30 and 17, has dropped out of the top 20 after falling three places to 22nd place, Cook has slipped three places to 24th position after a match contribution of 26 runs and Bopara has dropped eight places to 59th position after scores of 35 and one.

Mohammad Yousuf and Younus Khan lead a Pakistan 1-2 in the batting table with India’s Gautam Gambhir in third place.

In the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers, the only change in the top 20 is England fast bowler Andrew Flintoff who has slipped two places to 19th position.

The bowling list is headed by Sri Lanka’s iconic spinner Muttiah Muralidaran who is likely to concede his number-one spot to South Africa’s Dale Steyn when the latest rankings are released at the end of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. In the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test all-rounders, Flintoff has dropped one place to fifth after figures of 1-128 with the ball and contributions of 37 and 26 with the bat.

Jacques Kallis continues to lead the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test all-rounders with Mitchell Johnson of Australia in second and New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori third. (ANI)

Hughes will come up trumps in Ashes series: Langer

Perth (Australia), July 6 (ANI): Former Australian opener Justin Langer believes that current opener Phillip Hughes will come up trumps during the Ashes series that gets underway from Wednesday.

Langer has told Hughes to stick to the basics that helped him triumph over South Africa in his debut series and warned England’s quicks they risk playing into the young Australian’s hands if they try to pummel him with short-pitched bowling.

Langer, who is one of Hughes’s closest advisers, expressed immense confidence that the 20-year-old would work out a strategy for the short stuff that is sure to come his way from the moment he steps into the Ashes cauldron at Cardiff this week, after he was twice bounced out by Steve Harmison in the tour game at Worcester.

“It’s just something you’ve got to get used to, and it’s not easy as a short left-hand batter like ‘Hughesy’. You’ve got to get used to that bounce and work out a method to combat that, then you can find a rhythm against them,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Langer, as saying.

“The great thing about Phillip Hughes is that he’s always made runs under pressure and he’s always worked it out … His great strength is that he does know his game and he has the ability to make runs under pressure. He’s shown that at a young age,” Langer added.

“You have to be pretty precise if you’re going to bowl that length to him because we’ve seen how hard he hits the ball through point if it’s not quite right,” Australian team coach Tim Nielsen said.

Langer, who sent Hughes a text message of support before the biggest series of his short career, believes the eye-catching opener has the unflappable temperament to overcome his latest challenge.

“I heard it from [South African pacemen] Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, I heard it from [Proteas coach] Mickey Arthur, I’ve heard them all say it before, and he came up trumps,” Langer said.

The Australians did not train in Cardiff yesterday but Hughes is expected to face plenty of short stuff from the bowling machine in coming days, after he punched catches to gully and second slip in the tour game against the England Lions. (ANI)

Steyn frustrated over not playing in IPL

Johannesburg (S. Africa), May 14 (ANI): South African fast bowler Dale Steyn’s frustration is building and he wishes he could vent it on a few batsmen.

Crowned last year as the International Cricket Council’s Test Player of the Year and also Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) Player of the Year, Steyn has only played in three of the Bangalore Royal Challengers’ games in the Indian Premier League (IPL) because of a left thumb fracture.

“It’s bad to have to sit out like this and watch the other guys play,” Sports 24 quoted Steyn, as saying.

Steyn saw a hand specialist this week and has been advised to rest another 10 days. (ANI)

Swann’s spin may be England’s secret weapon against the Aussies

Melbourne, May 13 (ANI): Cricket observers in Australia have admitted for the first time in 16 years that England possesses the most threatening spin bowler, off-spinning extrovert Graeme Swann.

Spin coach Terry Jenner is very impressed with Swann, who used to front a rock group called Dr Comfort and the Lurid Revelations.

Eight years after he was set adrift by former coach Duncan Fletcher, Swann is the leading wicket-taker in world this year with 25 Test victims, ahead of Australians Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle and South African spearhead Dale Steyn (all on 20).

“He’s a breath of fresh air because he is continually trying to change his pace, he gets above the eyes, and the ball that got (Shivnarine) Chanderpaul in the first Test was a pearler because it brought him half forward, half back, next thing it’s history. Whereas Monty Panesar bowls very accurately but very predictably, Graeme Swann takes predictability out of it a bit and that is one of his plusses,” The Age quoted Jenner, as saying.

“He got three wickets in each innings and there was no doosra to be seen, so all those people are infatuated and think we should increase the flex to 20 degrees to allow these blokes to ping the doosra, as far as I’m concerned Graeme Swann shows that so long as you’ve got some spin and you’re willing to take a risk or two, you’re in the game,” he added.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if England plays two spinners because spin is our Achilles heel,” Jenner added.

To England’s immense relief, Warne will be confined to the commentary box four years after taking 40 wickets in a losing series. This time, the spin duties are to be handled by Nathan Hauritz, a containing rather than attacking finger-spinner.

“It might be the first time England have a better spinner than us, but whether an offie can run through us I’m not sure,” said Damien Fleming, the former Australian pacer. (ANI)

Proteas World Cup Twenty20 squad named

Johannesburg, May 5 (ANI): Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday named their final 15-man Standard Bank Pro20 squad for the ICC World T20 to be played in England in June.

The squad consists in the main of the players who won the two Pro20 Internationals against Australia earlier this year and contains no new caps.

“Our cricket is entering an exciting period. The players are all in good form and it is particularly pleasing to have so many quality all-rounders at our disposal. As always there are a couple of unlucky players and that emphasizes the excellent competition we have for places,” Sports24 quoted chief selector Mike Procter, as saying.

“I am delighted with the squad the selectors have given me. It is a team with plenty of options – great depth to the batting and plenty of bowling options. It is also an outstanding fielding unit,” Coach Micky Artur said.
The squad: Graeme Smith (captain), Johan Botha (vice-captain), Yusuf Abdulla, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robbie Peterson, Dale Steyn, Roelof van der Merwe. (ANI)

Ponting confident about team bouncing back in third ODI

Sydney, Apr 7 (ANI): Australian Skipper Ricky Ponting has backed his openers Brad Haddin and Michael Clarke to bounce back and has publicly challenged himself to lift his game after being thrashed by South Africa in the second game of their one-day international series.

Australia were blown away by pace duo Wayne Parnell (4-25) and Dale Steyn (4-27) at Centurion as South Africa bowled the tourists out for 131 and scored 3-132 in 26.2 overs in reply.

“We don’t need wholesale changes. We need to get those guys to play a little bit better,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Ponting, as saying.

“I’m in exactly the same boat. It’s a while since I’ve made a hundred in one-day cricket (14 months) so I’ve got to really knuckle down and get stuck in as well and make a big score. Batting in the top order in one-day cricket is all about making big scores and taking the responsibility upon yourself to do that,” he said.

“Michael Clarke’s had success there, Brad Haddin has been very good and I’ve been in the No.3 position for a long time. We need to get a lot more consistency out of us for the remainder of this series,” he said.

“We’ve got a few days to try to turn things around. I’m sure that you’ll see a better team on Thursday. That was as bad as we’ve played in a long time,” Ponting added.

Australian team arrived in Cape Town in a confident mood and will resume net practice on Tuesday. (ANI)

Parnell and Steyn Stars for SA Win Over Aussies

Powered by a tidy bowling performance, South Africa registered a comprehensive seven wicket win over Australia in a crucial tie here on Sunday. With this win, South Africa has leveled the five-match one-day international (ODI) series at 1-1.

Batting first, the star-studded Aussie batting line-up started a disastrous start as they lost half of their side of mere 19 runs. From Australia, Callum Ferguson scored the highest 50 runs while Mitchell Johnson also contributed a useful 30 runs for the team. Both Ferguson and Johnson scored a crucial 63 runs partnership for the seventh wicket.

It is Australia’s lowest first-innings total in a non-reduced 50-over ODI.

The 19-year-old left-arm swing bowler Wayne Parnell claimed his career-best figures to help bundle Aussies out for a small total. Playing his second ODI, Parnell took four for 25 in eight overs. He was equally well supported by his team mate fast bowler Dale Steyn. Steyn claimed four for 27.

Chasing a victory target of 132 runs in the allotted 50 overs, South Africans reached their target with seven wickets in hand and 23.4 overs to spare.

However, the home side also had a bad start. It lost Herschelle Gibbs for just 2 runs. African skipper Graeme Smith (40) and Jacques Kallis (31) posted a run-a-ball second-wicket stand of 69 and it was left to AB de Villiers to steer the hosts to their target with an unbeaten 36.

After his spectacular bowling performances, an elated Parnell said, “This is with the big boys you know and doing it against Australia is just massive.”

“Bringing the ball back in to the right-hander, that has always been with me. Lately I have worked on the one going across the right-hander”, added the new bowling sensation.

Scores in Brief:

Australia: (131 all out, Ferguson 50, Johnson 30, Steyn 4/27, Parnell 4/25);

South Africa: (132/3 in 26.2 overs, Smith 40, AB de Villiers not out 36, Johnson 2/47).

Injured Kallis rested for Durban ODI

Durban, Apr.2 (ANI): South Africa have decided to rest injured star all-rounder Jacques Kallis from the opening one-day international against Australia.

The 33-year-old pace bowler and No.4 batsman is likely to make his return from a groin-muscle injury in Sunday’s second ODI match at Centurion.

“Jacques hasn’t come through quite for Friday so he’s going to be missing out,” Fox Sports quoted captain Graeme Smith, as saying.

“Roelof (van der Merwe) is going to be missing out and Vaughan Van Jaarsveld and Wayne Parnell.”

The selection leaves off-spinner Johan Botha to bat at No.8 followed by fast bowlers Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Makhaya Ntini.

Smith, who like Kallis missed South Africa’s two Twenty20 International wins against Australia last week because of injury, has returned to the side after overcoming a fractured little finger.

“There’s myself, Herschelle (Gibbs) and Hashim (Amla) in the top three, Botha’s at eight,” Smith said.

“We bat deep enough. You always want your top order to take as much responsibility as possible.

“All three of us up front have had our success, so, it would be nice if we can really make it count here at Kingsmead.

“We’re excited to go.”

Australia have won the past three World Cups but Proteas coach Mickey Arthur can barely contain his excitement about how his squad is progressing in their push for a title campaign in 2011 on the subcontinent.

No.1-ranked South Africa host Australia for a five-match ODI series starting on Friday in Durban and Arthur says it’s going to be “huge”.

“We’ve prioritised what we want to get out of this series. So for us it’s almost like the re-start of something,” Arthur says.

“Friday for us is huge. You want to go one-nil up and hopefully you can then take momentum from the game on Friday.”

Arthur said the Proteas would be using the series to experiment with combinations ahead of the 2011 World Cup.

“We are continually trying to have a look at what is going to be best for us,” said Arthur, who mentored South Africa at the 2007 World Cup where they lost their semi-final to Australia.

“We’ve alluded to World Cups, there’s a lot for them to play for.

“We’ve got a really good mix here. Time will tell, without wanting to get too excited. But I’m very happy and I think we’re dead on track.” (ANI)

Albie Morkel a big threat for Australia: Ponting

Pretoria, Mar.29 (ANI): Australia cricket captain Ricky Ponting has identified big-hitting South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel as the player to stop in the Pro20 international on Sunday.

Morkel smashed four boundaries and two sixes to score 37 off 19 balls as South Africa beat Australia by four wickets on Friday to win the first Pro20 match at the Wanderers.

He also starred with similar late-innings hitting as the Proteas won a one-day international series 4-1 in Australia in January.

“He probably won a couple of games single-handedly with his batting in Australia. His power hitting (Friday) probably got them over the line again,” Ponting said.

“So he is a very, very dangerous hitter. They use him very well. They hold him off as late as they possibly can and let him go in for the final onslaught really,” he added.

Pro20 squads:outh Africa: Johan Botha (captain), Yusuf Abdulla, Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Johan Louw, Albie Morkel, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Dale Steyn, Roelof van der Merwe and Vaughn van Jaarsveld

Australia: Ricky Ponting (captain), Michael Clarke, Nathan Bracken, Callum Ferguson, Brett Geeves, Brad Haddin, Shane Harwood, Nathan Hauritz, James Hopes, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Ben Laughlin, Marcus North, David Warner and Cameron White. (ANI)

Mallya preferred England as IPL host

London, Mar 25 (ANI): Liquor baron and owner of the Bangalore Royal Challengers, Vijay Mallya, has said that he would have preferred England to host the second season of the Indian Premier League.

The Twenty20 competition was moved out of India because of a clash of dates with general elections and the IPL organisers sealed a deal to organise the event in South Africa.

“To be honest, I would have preferred England to South Africa,” the Daily Express quoted Mallya, as saying.

Mallya agreed that there is a huge possibility of rain disruptions; but he believed the tournament would have drawn bigger crowds in England.

“You could have taken just one flight from five or six cities in India to England and it would have been cheaper. Besides, an average Englishman loves his cricket and the stands there would have been full of spectators. But, I guess the weather conditions clinched the issue for South Africa,” he said.

“In England, there were chances that matches would have been rained off and teams sharing points affects the competitiveness of the event,” Mallya added.

The Bangalore Royal Challengers have five South African players in their squad – Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher, Dale Steyn, Dillon Du Preez and Roelof van der Merwe – and Mallya is hoping that would prove an advantage. (ANI)

Oz pacer Johnson doesn’t mind being called an all-rounder

Cape Town (South Africa), Mar.23 (ANI): When former Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee famously said a decade ago that Mitchell Johnson had enormous potential as a Test cricketer, he could have meant as a batsman.

Captain Ricky Ponting certainly thinks the pace bowler can go a long way with the bat and wasn’t at all surprised to see the left-hander hit his maiden century of 123 not out in Australia’s defeat in the third Test in Cape Town on Sunday.

“You can call me an all-rounder if you like,” Johnson said casually at his post-match press conference after winning the player-of-the-series award for his 255 runs at 85.00 and 16 wickets at 25.00.

“I enjoy batting at eight,” added the 27-year-old, whose batting average in 21 matches has risen to 34.70.

Australia will play Twenty20 games against South Africa on March 27 and 29 and Ponting appeared to be serious when he told Johnson: “You’re opening in the Twenty20 games.”

Johnson responded: “I don’t mind that.”

Ponting says he has regarded Johnson as an all-rounder from the first moment he saw him bat.

“As we saw today if someone can go out and make a Test-match 100 in 80-odd balls when you’ve got your backs to the wall, a lot of games are won and series changed as a result of somebody doing something like that,” Ponting says.

“So I have known he has been capable of that and we saw in Johannesburg (96 not out) what he has been capable of as well. It’s a matter of him not being happy with what he’s done and keep working hard and make himself into that really good all-rounder that he hopes he can become,” The Age quoted Ponting, as saying.

Johnson struck 11 fours and five sixes in his 123-ball innings, reaching his hundred with a six off last year’s leading wicket-taker in Test cricket, pacer Dale Steyn. (ANI)

Cape Town Test: Aussies undeterred, still confident of a win

Cape Town (South Africa), Mar.20 (ANI): Australian opener Simon Katich is confident that a 3-0 sweep against South Africa is par for the course, despite the visitors being bowled out for 209 on day one of the Cape Town Test.

South Africa will resume on Friday in control of the dead-rubber match at 0-57, with reluctant opener Ashwell Prince 37 not out and debutant Imraan Khan on 15.

Katich top-scored for the Australians with 55.

“It (the Australian score) is below what we would have expected but all series we’ve kept chipping away and the bowlers have done a great job. So hopefully if we can win the first session tomorrow we can get back on track,” Katich said at the end of the day’s play.

South Africa spinner Paul Harris took 3-34 and pacer Dale Steyn claimed 4-56. Makhaya Ntini finished with 2-38, taking two late wickets after his impressive early spell went unrewarded.

Katich held Australia’s innings together with his 229-minute knock. (ANI)

Desperate South Africans seek out Desmond Tutu for reinvigoration

Cape Town (South Africa), Mar.18 (ANI): South African cricket coach Mickey Arthur is using “the spirit of ubuntu”, whose chief proponent is Archbishop Desmond Tutu, to reinvigorate the Proteas ahead of the third Test to be played here against Australia.

The Proteas are in disarray at 2-0 down and Arthur, calling his team a family – even if two members, Neil McKenzie and Morne Morkel, were told to scram after the second Test – is using ubuntu, a philosophy that emphasizes collective rather than individual success, as his chief psychological weapon, according to a report in the Cape Times newspaper.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Arthur fears his players have become too selfish after their success in Australia last summer. It is understood that misfiring pacer Dale Steyn is causing him the most headaches.

“As long as players keep playing for the team, always willing to play for each other, this team will bounce back. I would hate to see it when guys become too individually oriented, where players are looking to do well only to grab the individual headlines,” Arthur told the Cape Times.

“The ethos within the team is what carries this group through and it will again. It’s really disappointing to have lost this series, but we won’t give up without a fight. We were really hurting in Durban because many of the players in this team had not lost a Test series before. I told them you cannot be an international cricketer if you have not tasted defeat. I’m sure that will spur the boys on this week,” he added.

Meanwhile, Australian coach Tim Nielsen has denied there is any temptation to play McGain in the final match of the series simply to discover whether he will do wonders during the Ashes tour.

“If we play Bryce it will be because he fits into our squad the best. If we start taking a ‘Let’s see how he goes’, attitude, it really does become a dead rubber for us,” Nielsen said. (ANI)

Johnson, Hughes move up in ICC Test rankings

Melbourne, Mar 12 (ANI): Australia’s two most exciting prospects for Ashes 2009 series, Mitchell Johnson and Phillip Hughes, have made big impressions in the latest ICC player rankings.

Johnson, the new pace spearhead in the absence of injured duo Stuart Clark and Brett Lee, has climbed to the second spot in the bowling rankings alongside South African rival Dale Steyn on 811 points.

Left-arm quick Johnson has taken 12 wickets at 21.00 to top the averages in the first two Tests of the three-match series in South Africa, while Steyn has nine wickets at 35.77.

Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan remains the No.1-ranked bowler. Australia’s Clark and Lee are ranked fourth and ninth respectively in the world, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Hughes, the 20-year-old opener who this week became the youngest player in Test history to score two centuries in the same Test, has leapt 20 places to 41st in the batting rankings.

Hughes has only played two Tests but has an average of 87.50.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting has moved up one spot to fourth and West Indian Shivnarine Chanderpaul has reclaimed the top spot.

Australia’s 2-0 series advantage over South Africa means Ponting’s men have retained their No.1 ranking. (ANI)
