Patna, Sept 20 (ANI): The activists of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) here celebrated the party’s good show in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats.

The RJD-Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) won eight seats in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats, a major set back to ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U).

The activists burst crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate the win at the party office.

Patna, Sep 18 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) celebrated its good show in state by-election on Thursday.

The RJD-Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) won eight seats in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats, a major setback to ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U).

JD (U) bagged three seats while its ally Bharatiya Janata Party won two seats.

RJD activists gathered at the party office and burst crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate the win.

Rabri Devi, leader of opposition in Bihar legislative assembly, termed the results as referendum against the ruling government.

“Bihar government led by Nitish Kumar is fooling the public. The people of Bihar have understood it and that’s why they have rejected the ruling party. I congratulate the people of Bihar. I am sure that people will keep on voting for Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance,” said Devi.

Media projected me as PM candidate: Modi

Ahmedabad, May 18 (ANI): Reacting to Janata Dal-United leader Sharad Yadav’s comment that the projection of Narendra Modi as a prime ministerial candidate was a mistake, the Gujarat Chief Minister on Monday said it was a media projection only and he had never projected himself as a candidate for the top post.

“My stand has always been clear that I am from Gujarat and will keep working for the state,” Modi told reporters here.

Modi also hoped that the new government at the Centre would help his state accelerate the pace of development.

“There is no full stop in politics. I want to appeal to the new government for support. Gujarat will take part in the development path more than earlier. Gujarat has played a major role in the development of the nation and it will continue to do so,” he added.

When asked about his party’s defeat in the elections, Modi said the people wanted the BJP to sit in the opposition and he accepts the verdict with humility.

“In democracy people’s verdict is final. This time people have mandated us to sit in the opposition again and the Congress and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) have been given the mandate to rule,” he added. (ANI)

Left to support Nitish Kumar as next PM

Patna, May 15 (ANI): In a surprising move, Communist Party of India (CPI) leader A. B. Bardhan on Friday pitched in Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal- United (JD-U) leader Nitish Kumar as the likely consensus Prime Minister candidate.

Bardhan’s statement came after Kumar demanded ‘Special Status’ for Bihar in lieu of his support for government at the Centre.

“Kumar’s demand of special status was compliable and the Left front would consider him as their PM candidate,” Bardhan told Zee News in an exclusive interview.

With Left clearly trying to stop BJP at any cost, the National Democratic Alliance ally JD(U) has emerged as the frontrunner.

Kumar, however, has repeatedly denied breaking line with the NDA in the recent past. (ANI)

Paswan also to miss Cabinet meet, but says he and Lalu are with the UPA

Kolkata, May 8 (ANI): Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) supremo Ram Vilas Paswan has said that he too will miss out on Friday’s Union Cabinet meeting. Earlier, it was reported that Railway Minister and Rashtriya Janata Party (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav would also miss the meeting.

It was then reported that both had opted to skip the meeting as they were miffed with Congress general secretary Rahul gandhi’s overtures towards key rival in Bihar — Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Paswan, however, said that his party had no differences with the Congress and added that both the LJP and the RJD will remain with the UPA.

Paswan said he was staying away from the cabinet meeting in New Delhi because of a previous commitment in Kolkata.

“I have not skipped the cabinet meeting. I am not able to attend as a previous meeting was fixed in Kolkata,” Paswan said, responding to speculation that he was skipping the cabinet meeting called by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh because he was miffed with Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s praise of Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

He said, “We are already a part of the UPA and there is no question of drifting. The Left has reacted that there is no question of joining hands with the Congress. For us we have been a part of them and we will remain to be a part of the UPA.”

When asked whether there was any sort of misunderstanding with the Congress, the LJP supremo said, “There is no misunderstanding with the Congress because they have already clarified their stands.”

Also clarifying the reason for his and RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s absence from the Cabinet meet, he said, “We had already informed earlier that we will not be able to attend the meeting because of a programme we had fixed earlier in North Kolkata. There was no agenda from our ministries.” (ANI)

Defamation case against Rabri Devi to be heard on May 13

Patna, May 4 (ANI): A defamation case against former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi for making inflammatory remarks against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Rajiv Ranjan Singh ‘Lalan’ will be heard on May 13.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) A K Jha, who heard the matter, fixed the next date after Rajiv Ranjan Singh failed to appear before the court today because he was sick.

On April 13, Rajiv Ranjan Singh had filed a defamation case against Rabri Devi.
The complaint said such malicious and slanderous statements did not behove a former Chief Minister.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate A. K. Jha received the case under Section 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

On April 5, at an election rally in Saran parliamentary constituency, Rabri Devi had allegedly described Nitish Kumar and Lalan as being “brothers-in-law”.

On April 6, senior advocate Ashutosh Ranjan Pandey filed a petition in the Patna High Court against Rabri Devi, seeking criminal contempt proceedings against her.

He also charged Rabri Devi of scandalizing and lowering the authority of the judiciary.

The JD (U) also urged the Election Commission (EC) to bar Rabri Devi from participating in election campaigns and also asked for a termination of her membership from the Bihar State Assembly. (ANI)

Lalu Prasad alleges rigging in third phase of elections

Patna, May 1 (ANI): Railways Minister Lalu Prasad has alleged that voting was rigged in Bihar in the third phase on Thursday.

Eleven out of Bihar’s 40 constituencies went to polls in the third phase of parliamentary elections.

“We have information of voting turnout between 25-55 per cent. In Badhaiya block of Munger district, there have been reports of rigging in. We have tried to contact the observers there and also the Senior Superintendent of Police,” said Lalu.

Munger, Banka and Kishanganj districts are considered to be pivotal constituencies for Lalu’s rival and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s party, Janata Dal United.

Meanwhile, Shekhar Suman, actor-turned-politician and a candidate of the Congress Party campaigned in Patna Sahib of Bihar from where he is contesting.

Suman’s son, Bollywood actor Adhyayan Suman along with wife Alka Suman, also campaigned for the actor.

“I have told them that I haven’t come here to play politics as I could have done it being in a different party which could have easily given me a winning seat,” said Suman.

Patna votes in the fourth phase on May 7.

There is a three-cornered contest involving Suman, another former Bollywood actor Shatrughan Sinha on Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ticket and RJD’s Vijay Sahu.

The remaining fourth and last round of polls in Bihar will be held for three seats on May 7. The first and second phases in 13 seats each were held on April 16 and April 23.

The outcome of the five-stage elections will be known on May 16. (ANI)

Lalu will be behind bars if NDA comes to power

Patna, Apr 26 (ANI): Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Rajeev Ranjan alias Lalan Singh on Sunday said if voted to power, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government would send Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad in jail for his involvement in the multi-million rupee fodder scam.

“Lalu’s days of enjoying power are over. He should now be ready to face the hard reality of jail,” Ranjan said at an election rally in Munger.

Ranjan further said that Lalu had managed to suppress the cases against him in the fodder scam with the help of the Congress.

“Lalu Prasad would now be ousted from the Centre in the same way he was ousted from Bihar in 2005,” Ranjan added. (ANI)

RJD-LJP alliance will be uprooted from Bihar: Nitish Kumar

Patna, Apr 24 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal- United leader Nitish Kumar on Friday said the RJD-LJP alliance would be uprooted from Bihar after general elections.

“The RJD-LJP alliance would face a rout in the state in the general elections. There is a strong anti-Lalu and anti-Paswan wave blowing across Bihar, as people want to see a change in governance at the Centre. It is now clear that the LJP-RJD combine will be uprooted from Bihar after general elections,” Nitish Kumar told reporters here.

Kumar also said that Lok Janshakti Party’s chief Ram Vilas Paswan would lose the Hajipur parliamentary constituency this time.

“Just as the people of Hajipur selected Paswan in 1977 with record margin, 2009 will see him rejected with the same margin.

JD (U)’s Ram Sunder Das would definitely win this time. (ANI)

Lalu Prasad files nomination papers from Patliputra

Patna, Apr 17 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad on Friday filed his nomination for the newly-formed Patliputra parliamentary constituency.

Prasad is contesting the polls from two constituencies. The second one is the Saran parliamentary constituency, where polling took place in the first phase of the general elections on Thursday.

Prasad submitted his papers to returning officer J. K. Sinha.

His biggest challenge for the seat is Janata Dal- United (JD-U) leader Ranjan Prasad Yadav. Yadav had left the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) last month and joined JD (U).

The Congress has fielded a former RJD MP, Vijay Singh Yadav.

Patliputra will go to polls on May 7.

Prasad currently represents Chapra parliamentary constituency. This constituency has been named Saran after delimitation.

In 2004, Lalu Prasad had won the Chapra parliamentary seat, defeating BJP’s spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy. (ANI)

Congress started criminalisation of politics, says Nitish Kumar

Patna, Apr 12 (ANI): Janata Dal-United (JDU) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday blamed the Congress for starting criminalisation of politics in the country.

“If there is criminalisation of politics in the country, it is because of the Congress since that party started this trend,” Nitish Kumar told reporters here.

Meanwhile, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan said that the Congress did not stand a chance in Bihar since the state is no more its bastion.

“The Congress doesn’t have any hold in Bihar. Why should we feel scared?” Paswan said.

Paswan mentioned that his party’s tie-up with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) was strong enough to bag all the parliamentary seats in Bihar.

“There is no confusion in Bihar. The RJD and the LJP alliance will sweep the polls no matter what the exit polls say,” he added. (ANI)

Advani promises ‘special status’ for Bihar if voted to power

Patna, April 10(IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Friday promised a ‘special status’ to Bihar if the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) comes to power after the Lok Sabha elections.

‘Special status for Bihar will be granted if NDA comes to power,’ Advani said in his address at a joint election rally with Janata Dal-United in Buxar town, about 125 km from here.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was also present on the occasion. The Bihar government has been stressing for a special status to speed up economic development in the state.

Advani also reiterated that Manmohan Singh is a weak prime minister.

‘I have no personal feud with Manmohan Singh but he is a weak PM going by his style of functioning,’ Advani said.

Advani will address two more public meetings in the state, in Nawada and Sasaram constituencies.

United Progressive Alliance no more united, says Advani

Patna, April 10 (IANS) Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Friday said with several alliance partners of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) deserting it, his party has an advantage in the general elections.

‘In the last one month, one by one several UPA partners have deserted it and are fighting against the Congress – that itself gives advantage to the BJP or NDA,’ Advani, the prime ministerial candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), said soon after he arrived here to campaign for party candidates in Bihar.

He said that the United Progressive Alliance was no more united.

‘I am certain after going across the country and reading people’s mood that the BJP will emerge as the biggest party in the elections,’ Advani told newspersons before leaving for Buxar to address a joint rally with alliance partner Janata Dal-United (JD-U).

He dismissed any possibility of a Third Front coming to power. ‘The formation of the next government is not possible without the support of the BJP or Congress,’ he said.

Advani lauded Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for putting the state on the path of development.

Poll panel notice to Lalu, Rabri

New Delhi, April 9 (IANS) The Election Commission Thursday issued notices to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad and his wife and former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi for violating the model code of conduct.

Deputy Election Commissioner J.P. Prakash told reporters here that the two had until April 11 to respond.

On April 6, Lalu Prasad told an election rally in Kishanganj that had he been the home minister, he would have run a roller over Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Varun Gandhi for his hate speeches against Muslims.

Lalu Prasad’s remarks created a furore and the Bihar Police Tuesday issued an arrest order against him. Gandhi is in jail in Uttar Pradesh for his reported inflammatory speeches.

Rabri Devi was served a notice for her alleged derogatory remarks against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and state Janata Dal-United (JD-U) chief Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh at Saran.

Tempers run high ahead of Lok Sabha elections

New Delhi, April 7 (IANS) The political temperature was rising ahead of Lok Sabha elections just nine days away with arrest orders against Railway Minister Lalu Prasad for threatening BJP candidate Varun Gandhi, now in jail, and an emotional Sikh journalist hurling a shoe at Home Minister P. Chidambaram at a Congress press conference Tuesday.

As political parties slug it out in what is expected to be one of the toughest general elections, a few candidates, including high profile ones, are stooping low and offending the Election Commission.

On Monday, Lalu Prasad, leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), stunned everyone when he threatened to run a ‘roller’ over Varun Gandhi for his alleged anti-Muslim speeches that have sent him to jail.

Addressing a rally in Kishanganj, 350 km from Patna, he thundered: ‘If I were the home minister, and if Varun had said this, then I would have run a roller over his chest and thought about the consequences later.’

He also justified the move to jail Varun Gandhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit constituency, as right.

Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U), which too has come out against Varun Gandhi’s speeches, voiced shock over Lalu Prasad’s remarks, saying it was unbecoming of a central minister to speak in this manner.

Kishanganj District Superintendent of Police Ram Narayan Singh Tuesday ordered the arrest of Lalu Prasad on the strength of a criminal complaint filed against the railway minister.

Far away from Bihar, at a press conference in the national capital, Chidambaram swerved to avoid a shoe hurled by journalist Jarnail Singh, who had got into a minor tiff with the minister on the circumstances that led to Congress’ Lok Sabha nominee Jagdish Tytler being exonerated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The ugly episode, quickly condemned by almost all political parties, highlighted how temperatures were rising before the polls. Things could get even more out of hand as parties, alliances and their supporters joust and scuffle for supremacy and voter attention.

In Hyderabad, the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) condemned Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s remark that the Andhra Pradesh capital was sitting on a powder keg and had terrorists more dangerous than those in Jammu and Kashmir.

MIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi alleged that Modi’s remarks made at a BJP rally Monday were part of a conspiracy to weaken the Muslim leadership. He said he would complain to the Election Commission.

Addressing a public meeting Monday night in the city, Modi said a link to Hyderabad emerged whenever a terrorist incident occurred in Gujarat, Mumbai and other places in the country.

In Uttar Pradesh, Ashok Pradhan, the BJP candidate from the Bulandshahr Lok Sabha constituency, has been booked along with 10 party activists for making provocative statements, police said.

Pradhan, a former union minister, and the others had assembled March 30 at the BJP office in Bulandshahr, about 400 km from Lucknow, and raised allegedly offensive slogans. They were demanding the release of BJP leader Varun Gandhi, now in the Etah jail for his alleged hate speeches.

Rabri Devi booked on charge of abusing Nitish Kumar

Patna, April 6 (IANS) Former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi has been booked for her alleged derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and state Janata Dal-United (JD-U) chief Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh at a poll rally in Saran district, an official said Monday.

‘A case was lodged against Rabri Devi at the Bheldi police station Sunday night. The FIR (first information report) was lodged by the district administration,’ Saran district magistrate B. Rajendar told IANS.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader had allegedly made the remarks against Nitish Kumar and Lalan Singh at a public meeting in Saran. Her husband, Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, is the party candidate from the Saran Lok Sabha seat.

Official sources said that police will investigate the alleged violation of the model code of conduct by Rabri Devi.

In its complaint to the Election Commission against Rabri Devi, the JD-U said the poll panel should disallow the former chief minister form campaigning.

‘We have demanded that the commission cancel her legislature membership and that she should not be allowed to contest next assembly elections for her abusive remarks,’ said JD-U spokesperson Shivanand Tiwari.

Tiwari led the party delegation to submit a memorandum to the poll panel here.

Nitish Kumar has said the JD-U will file a defamation suit against Rabri Devi.
