‘Loch Ness monster’s Aussie cousin exists’

Melbourne, June 11 (ANI): An Australian cryptozoologist is convinced that there is an aquatic beast related to the Loch Ness monster lurking in Sydney’s Hawkesbury River.

According to the Hornsby and Upper North Shore Advocate newspaper, in 1965, Rex Gilroy and his wife Heather began gathering information on a creature he believes still lives in the major waterway.

After years of “patience, field trips and stakeouts”, Gilroy also known for his research on the equally elusive Blue Mountains panther hoped to finally obtain photographic evidence.

Gilroy said they had compiled hundreds of sighting reports.

“There are stories of houseboats being lifted up at one end when something underneath tried to surface over at Jerusalem Bay,” the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

The most recent sighting was by fishermen near Wisemens Ferry in March.

“One of them momentarily saw a serpentine head and about 2m of long neck rise above the water before submerging,” Gilroy revealed.

He also referred to a sighting in 1975 by Rosemary Turner, who reported a monster swimming upstream from a lookout at Muogamarra Nature Reserve.

Robert Jones, an Australian Museum paleontologist, said that as far as science was concerned, the existence of the Hawkesbury River monster had never been proven.

But Gilroy says the monster is part of Aboriginal folklore.

Descriptions of the monster liken it to a plesiosaur, an aquatic dinosaur 70 million years extinct. The Loch Ness monster is also said to be related to the same extinct creature. (ANI)

Former Miss Universe hopeful taking up career in boxing

Melbourne, June 4 (ANI): Former Miss Universe hopeful and Water Ski world champion Lauryn Eagle has revealed that she would like to take up professional boxing.

Eagle, 22, a beauty pageant regular, also revealed that her mother has no idea about her plans, and that if she did, she would definitely be disowned.

“She is going to be in shock. She doesn’t know a thing,” News.com.au quoted the model/athlete as telling the Daily Telegraph during a break in training at her gym in Sydney’s Sutherland shire.

“I would like to have a fight and I am sussing it out now.

“I know some might be critical because I am a girl but I can’t really let what other people think get to me. It’s something I want to do. I just love it,” she said.

Eagle hasn’t given up on another crack at Miss Universe either, a competition she withdrew from this year after a run-in with the law.

“The Miss Universe thing was just bad timing. But it is something I can do later on,” she said.

“Right now I am focused on my boxing training and my skiing,” she stated.

Her trainer Losh Matthews said: “You bet.”

“She is a young girl who has been through a lot but I have never seen anyone more committed or dedicated in my life,” he added. (ANI)

‘Shark’ says was ‘business decision’ to shift base from Sydney to China

Sydney, June 4(ANI): Australia’s richest sportsman Greg Norman has said that the decision to shut his only office in the country, and shift his base to China, was a business decision.

“You have to go where the opportunities are to make a statement. We”re putting our eggs in a basket where there”s going to be tremendous growth,” The Daily Telegraph quoted Norman, as saying.

Norman’s comments came after suggestions that his company no longer saw Australia as its key Asia-Pacific hub.

Greg Norman Golf Course Design shut its Australian office in Sydney with at least three long-serving staff, including golf course architect and a 10-year company veteran Harley Kruse, being made redundant.

He further hit out at suggestions that he was abandoning Australia, and said that he would remain a major taxpayer well into the future.

Norman pointed to his wine and beef joint ventures to show he was a big tax contributor, and said: “We … generate a lot of revenue out of our businesses.”

“We do three million bottles of wine out of Australia, we do 90,000 kilos of beef and we”ve got five golf courses under construction here,” he added. (ANI)

Strauss warns Eng players over match-fixing fears

With match-fixing rearing its ugly head once again, England Test captain Andrew Strauss has asked his teammates to be more vigilant and report the matter to the authorities if they come across such a situation.

“We have a duty if we hear of match fixing in domestic cricket or with England to come forward and report it straight away. For players to be tempted to take bookmakers’ money is ludicrous,” Strauss said.

Talking to reporters on the eve of his side’s first Test against England at Lord’s, Bangladesh skipper Shakib-al-Hasan also said he got a call on the eve of Bangladesh’s ODI series against Ireland in 2008, promising him sponsorship in return for under-performance.

Strauss said he himself has never come across of any match-fixing incident but stressed on the need to eradicate the menace straight away. “From my experience, I haven’t seen anything in the Middlesex dressing room or had any reason to suspect that a game I have played in has been fixed in any way. If it is happening, it needs to be stamped out straight away,” Strauss said at Lord’s.

Strauss, on his return to Test cricket, said he was excited to be back among the group again and hoping to fire with the bat.

County player approached

Meanwhile, according to The Daily Telegraph, a seasoned English county player claimed that an Indian businessman had approached him to fix one-day domestic matches, a development which sent alarms in the cricket fraternity. The report, which was published on Wednesday, said a player, who has more than 10 years’ experience in English cricket, was told by the Indian businessman to quote “his own price” and that “things are already happening in county cricket”.

The player, who remains anonymous, has reported the incident to authorities and the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) would be contacting the ICC’ Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACU) on the player’s behalf, the report said. “They basically told me I could name my price for providing them with knowledge of the result of the game. They made me believe other counties are already involved,” the player was quoted as saying.

Two county players approached to fix games, says ECB

Two English county cricketers have reported approaches from bookmakers, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Wednesday.

“ECB can confirm that two players have formally reported approaches from bookmakers which is in accordance with the policy communicated to players from the ECB funded player education programme operated in conjunction with the PCA at the start of each season,” the ECB said in a statement.

“ECB has reported this information to the International Cricket Council Anti-Corruption Unit and to the Police Authorities.

“ECB believes unlawful activities such as those attempted here and appropriately reported by players must be eliminated.”

The Daily Telegraph reported on Wednesday that a county player had been approached by an Indian businessman who told him he could “name his own price” to fix the result of a one-day match this season.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan said he thought this was just “the tip of the iceberg.”

“By speaking out I hope this player will shame others — and I am sure more players have been approached — into also going public,” Vaughan told the Telegraph.

“In the past, players have laughed off these kinds of approaches but now they must reveal the danger the game is facing. Its credibility is at stake. This is further evidence that as far as the fixers are concerned, our game is ripe for corruption.

“That was always going to be the case as soon as county cricket was beamed abroad, which increased its exposure.”

Lancashire chief executive Jim Cumbes said there had been rumours about match-fixing on the sub-continent for some time but he had expected it in English county cricket.

“For a cricket match to be fixed you are going to need more than one individual player, probably three or four,” he said.

“But reading the report this morning, I suppose with the business of spot betting, it is easy to fix with one player.”

England soccer fans get specially composed prayers

London, May 24 (IANS) England fans will have specially composed prayers for their footballers during the World Cup.

Revered Nick Baines, of the Church of England, has composed three prayers that portrays god as a footballer who ‘played the cosmos into being’.

‘More people go to church than go to football matches. But football games are one of the few occasions when people have a collective experience in the same place at the same time,’ the bishop, a Liverpool team fan, was quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph.

Baines had included a prayer for non-believers who see no sense of the sacred in the sport.

‘More than half the population prays at some time and everyone will be affected by the World Cup in one way or another. So it makes sense to have some prayers for those that want to use them. This isn’t just about football. It’s about the rainbow nations of the world celebrating together with the people of South Africa,’ he said.

World Cups are traditionally fertile recruiting periods for churches as nervous fans pray for the right result.

Many churches are expected to put up screens in halls, and even in the main part of the church, for congregations to watch matches.

Football World Cup will be played in South Africa from June 11 to July 11.

Beckham will be England’s cheerleader

London, May 24 (IANS) David Beckham will not be an apprentice to manager Fabio Capello, but his role will be that of a cheerleader on the England bench at the football World Cup being held in South Africa June 11-July 11.

Capello made it clear that Beckham, who has been ruled out of the World Cup after rupturing his Achilles tendon, will not be a coaching staff.

‘He is not coaching staff, absolutely not,’ the England manager was quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph.

Capello was almost dismissive when mention was made that Beckham could contribute to tactical plans.

‘He will stay with us during the World Cup, but no coaching. You have to respect the coaches. He will not be like a coach. We have different projects for him, he is an ambassador for the 2018 World Cup and can go one or two times around South Africa. But it is important that David stays with us. He is one of the really important players who played with us. He is dedicated,’ Capello said.

Beckham’s role will now revolve around helping team spirit on a goodwill safari and, in dressing-room parlance, working as BBC – Balls, Bibs and Cones.

FIFA bars Capello from players’ session with referee

London, May 23 (IANS) England manager Fabio Capello received a set-back after FIFA prevented him from arranging a special session between his players and referee Howard Webb ahead of the World Cup.

The Daily Telegraph reported that the England manager wanted Webb to go through the new rules and regulations with his players at their training camp, but the world governing body’s rules prevented it.

England’s players will now be briefed by an official FIFA delegate who will give them a presentation on rule changes, the most high-profile of which is that players will now be cautioned for feinting in the run-up while taking a penalty.

FIFA has strict rules on officials, after its integrity unit identified referees as the ‘weak link’ in the defence against match-fixing. But there was no question about the integrity of Webb or the motivation of the England camp in trying to set up the meeting.

According to reports, referees will be kept in isolation during the competition and security guards will be posted outside referees’ hotels and no direct outside calls will be allowed to their rooms.

Porn linked to sexual harassment in schools

Melbourne, May 21 (ANI): Schools are facing an ever-growing problem of sexual harassment among students and teachers, and it has partly been blamed on the easy access children have to pornography on the Internet.

Education and parenting experts are being approached by high schools to deal with the behaviour, which includes sex-based taunts, explicit text messages and even physical assault.

Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research figures show that 68 sexual assaults and 265 indecent assaults or other sexual offences occurred on school grounds in the year September 2009.

Dannielle Miller from Enlighten Education, who works with adolescent girls, said sexual harassment in schools was on the rise but many had not grasped the seriousness of it.

“We are on the brink of a disturbing new reality here – boys are being exposed to a pornification of our culture in music, on TV, in films and on the net,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Miller as saying.

In one of the worst incidents, a Year 9 girl stood up in class to get a textbook when a boy lifted up her skirt and started taunting her.

“She began crying but managed to compose herself and sit down and another boy reached into her blouse to try to rip her bra off,” Miller revealed.

“The school”s response was to give the boys detention. Given the same school gives detention for failing to do homework, this was an offensively weak punishment.

“The boys received no counselling on why what they had done was wrong,” she said.

It was only when the girl”s incensed father complained that a criminal offence had been committed that the school suspended the boys and called in their parents. The victim eventually received an apology.

Miller said one school told her boys” sexual comments and attitudes towards female teachers had become so problematic that they needed to take action.

“They asked me for ways to help their female staff become more resilient to sex-based harassment. Plenty of schools don”t have policies to deal with this,” she said. (ANI)

US woman attacks restaurant worker with stun gun for wrong order

Melbourne, May 20 (ANI): An American woman is said to have attacked a restaurant worker with a stun gun after her drive through order went wrong.

According to the Smoking Gun, Melanese Reid, 20, reportedly became enraged after fast food workers at Wendy’s restaurant at Daytona Beach failed to provide her with the requisite number of mustard and mayonnaise packets, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Reid and Katrina Bryant, 23, argued with Wendy’s drive-thru employee Jason Hill (and called him “bitch” and “faggot”).

A statement tendered to police said Hill “told them that they were childish and to leave”.

Reid then attempted to slap Hill, but the worker was able to deflect her hand. At that point, witnesses told cops, Reid and Bryant exited their red 4WD and entered the Wendy’s.

While inside, Reid, armed with a pink stun gun, chased Hill around the kitchen/employee area of the restaurant with the Taser turned on and making the ‘electric’ noises.

For her part, Bryant “cheered (Reid) on” while continuing the previous argument using “profane and discriminatory language”.

After Hill escaped, the women fled when a Wendy’s manager announced that she was calling police.

Reid and Bryant were arrested later and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a felony.

The stun gun was recovered from one of the women’s purses. (ANI)

Commuters strip off on London Underground to promote new show!

Melbourne, May 18 (ANI): Passengers on the London Underground were said to have been left in shock after four workers rode the escalator and tube without clothes.

The foursome, who covered their modesty with handbags and briefcases, attracted stares and gasps but acted as if the nothing was out of the ordinary

They were out promoting a new TV series, ‘The Naked Office’, which shows workers at struggling companies turning their businesses around.

Despite it seeming a gimmick, Steven Suphi, a behaviour change specialist, said that there was merit in workers stripping off in the office.

“For most people in the UK going to work in the nude is a very daunting prospect,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Suphi as telling Britain’s Daily Mail.

“I believe this extreme process will help them push their boundaries and become a close team that trust each other enough to get naked together,” Suphi added. (ANI)

Dream victory at Monaco greatest day of my life: Webber

Melbourne, May 18 (ANI): Red Bull driver Mark Webber has said that winning the Monaco Grand Prix was the best day in his life as he had dreamt of a top podium finish in the world’s ‘toughest’ race since childhood.

“It was the best day of my life. I’ve dreamt of winning the Monaco Grand Prix since I was a boy and to do it from pole position was just awesome.

“It’s an honour for me to join the list of winners for this race, which hadn’t been won by an Australian since Jack Brabham in 1959,” The Daily Telegraph quoted Webber, as saying.

“Qualifying and the race were pretty near perfect for me. The RB6 was fantastic to drive and I executed some tidy laps to take pole position from Robert Kubica on Saturday afternoon,” he said.

Webber said he expected a real challenge from Kubica, but was relieved to see Sebastian Vettel get the jump on him at the start.

“It gave me a buffer to the Renault driver, while also setting us up for Red Bull Racing’s second one-two of the season. My start wasn’t actually that great, but the run to the first corner was short and no one was able to get ahead.

“It’s very difficult to pass at Monaco and when I emerged from the first corner in the lead, I knew that the race was mine to lose,” Webber said. (ANI)
