Malay Indian body demands fair scholarship allocation

Kuala Lumpur, June 11 (ANI): An Indian group, the Federation of Malaysian Indian Organisations, has requested the Malaysian Government to review its policy on scholarship allocation, the Daily Star reports.

The organisation’s President, A. Rajaretinam, said he was saddened about the fact that of the 1,500 scholarships given out recently, 1,200 went to Bumiputras and the rest to non-Malays.

“We are not against Umno or Bumiputras. We just want non-Malays to be given the same number of scholarships that was given out last year and the year before in line with the democratisation of education”, he was quoted, as saying, after a meeting between Pakatan Rakyat MPs and NGOs over the controversial allocation of scholarships.

He said he was surprised over PSD’s decision to give 80 per cent of the scholarships to bumiputras this time when the formula for the past two years was 55 per cent Malays and 45 per cent non-Malays.

“If they are going to reinstate the number of scholarships to 2,100, which was the total number given out previously, the remaining 600 scholarships should be given to non-Malays,” he said.

The Public Services Department (PSD) though, is learnt to have assured him that it would conduct a review in this regard following the public outcry. (ANI)

Bangladesh opposition parties to launch stir against Hasina

Dhaka, June 6 (IANS) Bangladesh’s principal opposition parties have decided to launch a joint stir against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government whose policies they say are ‘anti-national’.

The decision was taken by leaders of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its key political ally Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) who met here Saturday evening.

JeI said it would join the June 27 strike announced by the BNP.

Both the parties have been critical of the five deals Hasina signed with India during her New Delhi visit in January and have separately announced that they would not allow them to be implemented.

The agreements pertain to trade, exchange of criminals and information on militancy afflicting both South Asian neighbours.

JeI chief Matiur Rahman Nizami said: ‘There is no alternative to waging a movement. BNP has already announced programmes to that end and we have taken those positively.’

The two parties shared power during 2001-06, but lost badly to a Hasina-led alliance in December 2008. This was their first formal meeting after 19 months.

The meeting indicated divergence of views on the issue of the government’s move to hold ‘war crimes trials’ against those who killed unarmed civilians during the country’s 1971 freedom movement. The top brass of the JeI is on the list of the accused.

However, JeI secretary general Ali Ahsam Mohammed Mojahid was quoted as saying by the Daily Star Sunday: ‘We don’t have any disagreement on any issue.’

However, BNP chief Khaleda Zia told the Jamaat leaders that BNP ‘is talking about the issue from its viewpoint and Jamaat should go ahead with its own strategies’, the newspaper said.

The Hasina government has amended relevant laws and set up a tribunal in March to begin the trial of those who allegedly engaged in killing unarmed civilians in the run up to the movement that led to separation from Pakistan.

While JeI opposed the stir on ideological and political grounds, the BNP was founded by slain president Ziaur Rahman, himself a freedom fighter.

Khaleda Zia has not opposed the government move, but says that it should not lead to political witch-hunting.

According to media reports, Zia has engaged other opposition parties for a joint stir against the Hasina government and has garnered their support.

Terrorists in Britain’s high-security prison planned to ‘escape in an aeroplane’

London, June 6 (ANI): Terrorists incarcerated in one of Britain’s top high-security prisons has hatched a preposterous escape plot that entails their flight to freedom in an aeroplane.

The plan includes smuggling the entire aircraft in parts into an “escape-proof” lockup.

The far-fetched plan has been a source of much amusement among the prison personnel some of whom burst out laughing when they were first informed of it.

“It was completely incredible, like something out of a film. It was meant to be a serious briefing but we all fell about laughing,” a security source and former warden at the jail, told the Daily Star Sunday.

“Someone even joked, ‘I hope they’re bringing in air hostesses too’. We were told to be on our guard for any suspicious behaviour, especially from the Islamic inmates inside for terrorist charges,” he added.

The Belmarsh prison is a category A lock-up in the London borough of Greenwich and houses over 900 prisoners. It was built in 1991 and has been altered to keep prisoners convicted of terrorist offences. (ANI)

2012 London Olympics: Fury over 20k pound payment to interior designing firm

London, June 6(ANI): The 2012 London Olympics chiefs have shelled out 20,000 pounds to an interior designing firm, Pringle Brandon, that tells them where to put desks in their offices.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has paid Pringle Brandon around 5,000 pounds a year for four years for its advice on how to divide up open-plan workspaces, and where it would be best to put desks.

“These payments date back to 2006 when the ODA was first established. The payment was made for work on the configuration of our offices in Canary Wharf,” The Daily Star quoted an ODA spokesman, as saying.

Meanwhile, Matthew Elliott, Chief Executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, slammed the decision and said: “It’s bonkers to pay people so much money just to set out the desks.”

“We pay the ODA’s managers a fortune and they should be up to managing the office themselves. It’s small wonder the Olympics have run so far over budget,” Elliott added.

However, a spokesman for Pringle Brandon said that their clients hire them due to their efficiency to provide well-designed offices. (ANI)

UK taxpayers’ fury over ex-cons free gym membership under crime reduction scheme

London, May 21(ANI): Former convicted criminals in the UK are being rewarded with free gym memberships to encourage them to turn their backs on a life of crime.

Thirty criminals in Wokingham, whose crimes include burglary and anti-social behaviour, have got passes worth around 60 pounds a month as long as they stick to the conditions of their rehabilitation.

Talking about the scheme, Detective Inspector Rodger Cartwright, of Wokingham CID, admitted that it “might not be popular” with the public, but insisted that it “taught discipline” to offenders.

“They have to work really hard to get it and I have an intelligence network so I know what a lot of local villains are up to. We put them away if they try and offend again,” The Daily Star quoted Cartwright, as saying.

However, Policy Analyst at the Taxpayers’ Alliance, John O’Connell, claims that the scheme is a complete waste of money.

“We often hear that we need to protect frontline services, but these hare-brained schemes make that all the harder,” O’Connell said.

“It also shows a complete distortion of priorities. Law-abiding people work hard so they can pay to use their local gym. They might wonder why they bother if convicted criminals get theirs for free,” he added. (ANI)

England football fan asked to pull down flag over communal harmony fears!

London, May 21(ANI): An England football fan in Southampton has been left fuming after being told by a warden to remove England flags from outside his flat over safety reasons, and that the display could be construed “racist”.

Karl Staples had put up flags, bunting and balloons on the balcony of his council flat to show his support for the Three Lions ahead of next month’s World Cup in South Africa.

“I thought I’d put them up to support the boys. I just wanted to get people in the mood. I’m definitely in the mood, I can’t wait, so let’s get ready,” The Daily Star quoted Staples, as saying.

“If the players see stuff like that it’s going to boost them on a bit, but if they don’t they’re going to think there’s no-one behind us,”

However, Nicky Murphy, Southampton Council’s Executive Director of Neighbourhoods, said no worker had claimed the flags were racist and Staples was only asked to remove flags from communal areas.

“Southampton City Council is right behind England in the World Cup. We are supportive of any resident showing their support for the team. We would encourage people to fly the flag of whoever they support,” Murphy said.

“But, like every local authority in the country, shared communal halls and the sides of buildings need to be kept clear of objects, signs, posters and flags,” he added.

He further said that the council made the decision after a fire at a block of flats last month killed two firefighters.

“Recent events have shown how important it is to keep communal areas free from flammable objects. And any accusations of the council telling this resident that the flags are racist are completely untrue,” Murphy added. (ANI)

“It’s getting very close to the start of The X Factor auditions and Cheryl has not yet signed on the dotted line,” the Daily Star quoted a show source as saying.

“It would ruin her X Factor experience not to have another ‘girly girl’ like Dannii to laugh and joke with and gang up with against the lads.

“There’s been talk about Mel B whom Cheryl is quite frightened of.

“She is also mindful of the fact any youngsters may try to upstage her in the fashion stakes,” the source added.
