EU supported urban agricultural market popular in Kerala

Maradu (Kerala), Sept 18 (ANI): Agricultural Urban Wholesale Market at Maradu in Kerala has become popular among residents and farmers alike.

Fresh and cheap agricultural products are available here and the farmers have the storing, testing and other facilities.

The market is run by the Kerala Government and is financially aided by the European Union (EU). Fresh fruits, vegetables, spice and other agriculture produces are sold in the market.

The place is attracting hordes of customers, as the prices of products are cheaper compared to other shops.

“Most of the products sold in this market are fresh and of a good quality. Earlier, I used to go to main market. But this place is cheap, easy and products come directly from the farms as compared to other shops,” said Sebastian, a customer.

The setting up of warehousing, packaging and marine testing units for frozen or dried fish, vegetables and fruits at the Urban Market are some of the facilities available to farmers.

Prices are low since the farmers directly supply their produce in this market and own shops.

“Compared to other markets here, the prices are low as we have no labour cost involved During festival and other occasions, sellers used to charge high but here prices always remain low because we ourselves produce and later sell and for customers,” said Saji Kumar, a farmer and a shop owner.

Recently, various programmes and exhibitions have been introduced with the help of the State Government and horticulture mission to make the market more farmer-friendly.

The market was set up to improve the marketing infrastructure and enabling farmers to get a better price for their produce.

The market is developed at an area of 46 acres that can handle more than 2,500 tons of produce.

Facilities such as internet access enable the farmers keep track of the daily prices, Agmark certification for the produce is also available at the Agmark Testing Laboratory functioning at the market. By Juhan Samuel (ANI)

Dial auto service launched in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, Sept 17 (ANI): In a bid to provide quick, hassle free and reasonably charged mode of transportation, a dial-an-auto service equipped with GPS navigation system has been launched for the first time in Chandigarh.

The neat and clean pink coloured motor rickshaws, known as Tuk Tuk, are changing the way people travel in the city.

The fleet of 10 dial-an-auto-rickshaw, which is only a phone call away, also boasts of two lady drivers, the first in Chandigarh.

Women passengers, who feel safer traveling with lady drivers, are appreciating their services.

“Chandigarh is one city where people are safe anyway. We have been told we are safe with the service,” said Alka Thapar, a lady auto driver.

One has to just dial 4242424 for calling an auto rickshaw to get it at your doorstep.

The autos are equipped with tamper proof fare meters to assure passengers of not being overcharged.

“We maintain our call center. Whenever any individual requires an auto he rings up and the call centre picks up the call. They record the call and then convey to the driver by selecting the vehicle nearby to pick up the customer. That’s the procedure and customer has to pay from the pick up point to the drive point only,” said VS Dhillon, Managing Director of the Tuk Tuk Auto Rickshaw Company.

The service aims at providing a quick, reliable and safe journey to people who can relax and sit back without the fear of getting fleeced by drivers.

“I’m using it for the first time It’s reasonably priced and I’m really liking it,” says Charanjit, a customer.

The new service is a welcome change for commuters. With the new service in place, passengers can hope for a change in the attitude of traditional auto drivers who are often accused of fleecing customers. By Sunil Sharma (ANI)

Fish sales shoot up during Ramadan in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sept 16 (ANI): Sale of trout fish in Kashmir has been witnessing an upward trend, as Muslims prefer nutritious alterative to meat varieties during the holy month of Ramadan.

Normally people eat trout fish during whole year at different occasions. But in the month of Ramadan demand for trout fish automatically increases because of its health benefits.

Long queues of customers were seen outside the sales counter in Srinagar to take home their share.

“During Ramzan, people like to eat good food. Before Ramzan, the shop is open once a week but during Ramzan it opens twice a week. It has become preferred food,” said Kaiser Ahmad, a customer.

“I think trout fish is the best food available of all the food options available to us and that is why so many are buying it. There are no scales also. It has protein and vitamins,” said Mohammed Ashraf, another customer.

The state fisheries department is providing two kilograms per head at the rate of 150 rupees per kg.

“We have to order fish again later in the day as stock lasts only few hours. We try to supply fresh fish to our customers,” said Mohammed Hussain Wani, fisheries marketing officer.

Faster visa to US under Delhi consular section

New Delhi, Sep 15 (ANI): The US Ambassador to India, Timothy Roemer on Monday inaugurated the US Embassy’s new Consular (visa) section in New Delhi.

The new facility is the result of a multi-year, 10 million dollar expansion that would permit the embassy to provide faster and better consular service to the Indian community, particularly catering to northern India.

James Herman, Minister Counsellor for Consular Affairs at the United States Embassy, told reporters that new consul section doesn’t mean that more visas would be issued, but it would help clear the backlog.

“The new facilities designed here are to allow us the capability to process more visas. It doesn’t mean that we are issuing more visas. It is simply a matter of making sure that we can process all the visas applicants who want to apply for visas in India,” he added.

“Three years ago the average waiting time in India for a visa appointment was a little bit over six months, that is now down to a well under two weeks. In some place like Chennai for example it’s just a two-day wait. So the point is to give us the capability of processing as many visas as there are applicants,” Herman said.

The new facility doubles the waiting area, triples customer seating, adds a modern queuing system to guide customers through the visa process and adds many interviewing windows to ensure that visa applicants and American citizens can speak to an officer more quickly and in a convenient, modern environment.

The demand for consular services in India has surged to new levels, mirroring the deepening strategic partnership. Over the past five years, the issuance of U.S. non-immigrant visas in India have more than doubled from approximately 275,000 in 2003 to approximately 560,000 in 2008.

Speaking on the recent travel advisory issued to the Americans travelling to India, Herman said that it is routine and just meant for the safety of US citizens.

“The travel alert is for a wider audience. It’s basically says the same things as last two warden messages. So if you look at it it’s the way we communicate with Americans who travel…it’s a fair assessment,” he added.

Chavs top the list of Brits’ 100 most annoying things

London, Sep 4 (ANI): A survey has revealed that chavs, who are typically portrayed as uncultured, anti-social, baseball cap wearing youths, have topped the list of the 100 most annoying things Brits find.

The survey revealed that more than 60 percent people found chavs to be “very annoying”.

The Brits were also annoyed by people driving too close behind them and people who smell, with 55 per cent and 52 per cent of the 3,000 people polled saying this was one of their biggest peeves.

Of the top 10 annoyances were people who eat with their mouth open (50 per cent), rude shop assistants (50 per cent), foreign call centres (49 per cent), stepping in dog dirt (49 per cent).

The list also included people who cough without covering their mouths (49 per cent), slow Internet connections (49 per cent) and poor customer service (47 per cent).

Lactofree’s Annual Intolerance Survey also found 79 percent of people were wound up easily by the little things in life, with 65 per cent driven to distraction.

On average, people find themselves getting annoyed more than three times a day and half of all respondents said they were likely to turn into a grumpy old man or woman.

The survey also found 39 per cent of Brits were cheesed off with the nation’s obsession with Z-list celebrities, while 38 per cent were fed up with the preoccupation with Katie Price and Peter Andre’s split saga.

Low on the list was the recession, with 31 per cent of people finding it annoying, and bankers, with 13 per cent finding them irritating.

Outside the top 100 were mice, mothers-in-law and karaoke, with 9 per cent of people finding these very annoying.

“‘This survey shows how intolerant we are as a nation, and how even the smallest of things annoy us – especially when, for many, their annoyances are driving them to distraction,” the Telegraph quoted Samantha Glassford, brand manager for Lactofree, as saying.

“‘This year the poll has shown how especially irritated we are by other people and their bad habits and how surprisingly low a nationwide burden such as the recession came in the annoyance list.

“For many of us, there really isn’t a cure for these everyday intolerances, yet when it comes to those food intolerances, there can be a solution.

More than virus, Dilshan’s batting contributed to Kiwi defeat: Vettori

Galle (Sri Lanka), Aug 23(ANI): New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has said that more than the energy-sapping virus that stuck his team during the first Test match at the Galle International Stadium, it was Sri Lankan batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan’s explosive batting which contributed to New Zealand’s 202-run loss.

Dilshan scored 92 runs in Sri Lanka’s first innings and scored quickfire 123 runs in the second to take Sri Lanka to an imposing target of 413.

“When you look at how well Dilshan played and how poorly we bowled to him, it was probably the defining moment of the game,” Stuff.co.nz quoted Vettori, as saying.

“There were a couple of opportunities there to put pressure on them, but everything we did, he took it away from us. He played exceptionally well, he played very aggressive innings, and when you’ve got a player like that, it makes it very tough to captain,” he added.

Vettori said that he wanted to take the game to the wire, however, failed to do so, as multiple players being ill in the team meant that they were bowled out for a meager 210 runs.

“I really hoped we’d take it down to the wire. I hoped that we could bat for long periods of time, but in some ways a few illnesses counted against us and the application wasn’t quite there,” Vettori said.

He further said that one of the most disappointing things in the Test was to lose as many wickets to the seamers as they did.

“Obviously Murali’s a difficult customer to come up against but the way Thushara bowled was probably where we let ourselves down,” Vettori said. (ANI)

Boeing set to test unmanned aircraft in Australia

Brisbane, July 12 (ANI): Australian scientists and US aviation giant Boeing are set to test unmanned aircrafts, which would share airspace with piloted passenger planes without causing any collision.

In a non-descript shed in suburban South Park in Seattle, a team of young Boeing engineers are overseeing an experiment that provides a startling glimpse into the future.

Their 30-metre by 15 metre by five-metre-high unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) “swarming” laboratory looks like a small indoor cricket shed with model rotor aircraft parked on the concrete floor.

Suddenly the UAVs are airborne and swarming around the shed, their pre-determined tracks, altitudes and collision avoidance mechanisms already programmed in using advanced algorithms that could ultimately spell the end of piloted aircraft, The Courier-Mail reports.

The aim of this cutting edge science is to build the mathematical models that will allow uninhabited aircraft to fly safely in controlled airspace.

Boeing’s new Australian research chief Bill Lyons talks about the aim behind the experiment: “To allow (unmanned) systems to operate at least as well as human piloted systems.”

The algorithms developed in the swarm lab will soon be put to the test in the skies above Kingaroy in southern Queensland in the world’s first ever trial of unmanned aircraft inside controlled airspace.

Airspace authorities in both the US and Australia, highly wary of having pilotless drones in potential conflict with airliners carrying hundreds of passengers, will require 100 per cent guarantees before they will allow the two to mix.

Senior Boeing engineer John Vian said the major challenge for unmanned aircraft operating in controlled air space is safety.

“We don’t know how these systems will develop. For these systems to be viable they have to be reliable and totally autonomous. We develop the technology, how it is applied is up the customer,” Dr. Vian said. (ANI)

Hike in vegetable prices leaves Bihar residents in harried state

Patna, July 12 (ANI): The high prices of vegetables have upset household budgets of people in Bihar, leaving them both harried and troubled.

The hike in fuel prices and a delay in monsoons have adversely affected vegetable prices. People say the prices are too high.

“For the past month or so, vegetables have become very expensive. Whatever was around rupees eight has gone up to 25 rupees. Ladyfinger which was rupees six per kg has gone up to rupees 25-30. Tomatoes, which used to be rupees 10-12, are now being sold at rupees 35-40. Sometimes it goes beyond what we can afford, but we have to manage. We now buy lesser quantities,” said Sunil Kumar Agarwal, a customer.

People say think before buying vegetables or buy just as per their needs.

“The vegetables have become very expensive. We have to think before buying. Previously, we could buy in stock and keep it in the refrigerator. But now, we just buy as per our needs,” said Archana Kumari, another customer.

Vendors say the rise in fuel prices have had a cascading effect on vegetable prices and the prices of other essential commodities.

“The rains were delayed this year so the crop was destroyed. And all the vegetables that we get from outside, they are expensive as the petrol and diesel prices have increased. We spend more, so we sell it for more,” said Guddu, a vegetable vendor.

Fuel price hike unpopular all over India

New Delhi, July 2 (ANI): Petrol and diesel prices rise by as much as 10 percent in India, on Wednesday, the first increase this year and one of the steepest ever.

Petrol prices rose by four rupees a litre, while diesel rates were hiked by two rupees a litre.

The price hike did not go down well with the common people who expressed their helplessness at the situation.

“The sudden increase in the prices is very strange. It will definitely burn holes in the pockets of the common people. This is pre-budget increase god knows what will happen after the budget has been passed.” said Puneet, a customer.

The hike in the fuel prices will burden the people already reeling under the impact of recession. It may trigger talk of further freight hike by the transporters.

“The price of petrol and diesel was hiked by four rupees and two rupees respectively. Let’s see what happens in future. The price hike will cause many problems for the common man, but we can’t say how much further increase there will be in the prices of fuel,” said Ishmeet Singh, another customer.

Prices were last raised in June last year, when the average price of India’s crude imports were 113 dollar a barrel, but they were cut in December and again in January as oil prices tumbled.

The government has not increased the price of cooking gas and kerosene to protect the poor and middle-class.

Despite price increase, oil firms say they were likely to suffer a revenue loss of 560 billion rupees on sale of petrol, diesel, cooking gas and kerosene this fiscal. (ANI)

Tech Mahindra seeks end to eight-year World Bank ban on Satyam Computer Services

Sydney, July 2 (ANI): Tech Mahindra, the new owner of the troubled Indian IT services firm Satyam, has officially written to the World Bank seeking an end to the eight-year ban against Satyam Computer Services for allegedly providing improper benefits to bank staff.

The company has rebranded itself as Mahindra Satyam.

“We wrote to the bank a few weeks ago. We don’t expect an immediate response as these things take time but we disagree with the claims they’ve made,” Australian IT quoted Tech Mahindra executive vice-chairman Vineet Nayyar, as saying in Sydney.

Satyam was blacklisted last September and a month later was forced to deny reports that its contractors had installed spy software on World Bank computers.

Tech Mahindra also said that it remains committed to developing a 75 million dollar IT facility in Geelong and will continue to service Telstra despite losing a 30 million dollar-plus contract.

Nayyar reaffirmed the company’s commitment in talks with Victorian Innovation Minister Gavin Jennings this week.

“We’re committed to the project (but) we’ve got due diligence in place. The goal is to complete the project but we need to investigate how much investment is needed,” Nayyar said.

The Geelong project was announced more than a year ago with Satyam as the main financial backer, in partnership with the Victorian government, the City of Greater Geelong and Deakin.

The software hub was to create 2000 jobs, a welcome reprieve for a region afflicted by automotive industry job losses.

Satyam’s local chief, Venki Prathivadi, said Telstra was still a customer despite reports that TELCO had severed all ties.

“We had a five-year contract with Telstra from 2003 and we fully served it. Telstra put out a request for proposals and we made it to the short list,” Prathivadi said.

Satyam still has contracts worth 135 million dollars with Qantas and 12 million dollars with Suncorp. (ANI)

Wal-Mart launches store in Amritsar

Amritsar, May 30 (ANI): Wal-Mart Stores Incorporation opened its first cash-and-carry store in Amritsar on Saturday.

Bharti Wal-Mart, the joint venture between the American retailer and India’s Bharti Enterprises, was scheduled to launch the store on Tuesday. But the programme was deferred following recent riots in Punjab to Sikh Guru attack incident in Vienna.

The store-Best Price Modern Wholesale-will be the first of between 10 to 15 planned wholesale facilities in India, measuring about 50,000-100,000 square feet each and employing about 5,000 people over the next seven years.

The entry of multinational retailers into India’s fragmented and tightly controlled retail industry is mired in controversy and Wal-Mart’s entry is seen as a sign of foreign investors’ confidence in the country after ruling coalition was re-elected two weeks ago.

“The world is changing, in India the youth is coming in, they want better stores if you go and look at our store here today, which we have made a model ‘Mera Kirana’ you look at the store, it tells you a story. You will see with this cash and carry coming in, with the best price coming in, you will see once the people come in and start linking with us, they will see the change,” said Rajan Bharti Mittal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Bharti Enterprises.

Booming Malay sex sector requires no stimulus package

Kuala Lumpur, May 25 (ANI): While most industrialists can be seen craving for more and more stimulus packages amid the ongoing recession, solicited sex in Malaysia is one sector that seems far from going into a tailspin.

Sources in the local prostitution scene say that solicited sex is going through a boom.

They have revealed that they raked in more than RM3.2 billion last year, which is just the earnings of sex workers, not including those of pimps and other spin-offs.

Statistics from the international non-governmental organisation, Coalition Against the Trafficking of Women, suggest that there are about 150,000 prostitutes working in Malaysia, with over 10,000 in the Klang Valley.

According to information from the women rescued by local women’s aid NGO Tenaganita, a prostitute usually works a seven-day week, charging RM150 an hour.

“Serving an average of eight clients a day, she ends up making RM1,200 daily and possibly RM36,000 a month,” the New Strait Times quoted Aegile Fernandez, anti-human trafficking coordinator of the NGO who has had experience making women escape the sex industry for more than 20 years, as saying.

“But that is just full-time sex workers who enter the trade willingly. If the girls are forced into the trade via human trafficking, she gets nothing except a traumatic experience,” Aegile added.

The syndicate running the brothels is said to usually have up to 100 girls under them, meaning that they could rake in about RM120,000 a day and a whopping RM3.6 million a month.

Information from pimps operating in the country suggests that Malaysia has hundreds of such syndicates, each operating several brothels in their designated areas. Many brothels in Malaysia double as “health centres” offering massage services.

JJ, a pimp for more than 10 years, says that clients are willing to pay from RM60 to RM100 for an hour of massage, followed by an additional RM150 for sex.

“Prostitutes who double as massage ladies also get a fee from their handlers for massage services, usually about RM20 per customer,” JJ says.

So, in addition to as much as RM36,000 monthly from sex alone, a prostitute can add on another RM9,000 for offering “half services”, bringing her monthly untaxed income to a whopping RM45,000.

“Don’t forget their RM200 a day wages for massaging an average of 10 customers. That’s a legitimate RM5,200 a month or RM62,400 a year. They can choose to pay tax on that, but most don’t,” says JJ.

He has also revealed that each sex worker pays RM3,000 a month to pimps “as tax or rent for using our centres to do business and for protection from aggressive customers.”

According to him, prostitution is a recession-proof business.

“Things didn’t slow down for us during the 1997 Asian financial crisis or any of the recessions before that. Sex, like food, is a necessity,” he said. (ANI)

Residents of Kashmir wear stones to beat stress

Srinagar, May 22 (ANI): The residents of Srinagar are resorting to wearing stones to beat the stress and turn the planetary movement in their favour to improve their fortunes.

They feel that the best way to deal with stress is to use stones as these stone manage to influence the planetary movements of planets, to impact lives.

The people here perceive stones to be a stress buster, which also aids them in over coming their problems like late-marriage and failure in business. The stone users swear by the positive impact it has had on their lives.

“I have used the stone myself. Once, I wore the stone, after 15 – 20 days, I became absolutely fit. Earlier, I used to be tense all the time. Since I wore this stone, I have been all right,” said Feroze Ahmad, a customer.

The people are using these stones in the shape of rings, bracelets and necklaces to give it a fashionable look.

The shopkeepers involved in the stone trade say that the largest group using these stones is the youth.

“The situation in Kashmir has been very stressful for the past 20 years. It is for this reason the people here are very disturbed. So the people come to us with their problems and we give these stones to them,” said Arif Ahmad, a stone shopkeeper.
