Lampard determined to be England”s nominated penalty taker

London, May 18 (ANI): Ace midfielder Frank Lampard has insisted he would not shy away from taking spot-kicks during the World Cup finals in South Africa this summer and is determined to be England”s nominated penalty taker.

“Frank Lampard has promised he can beat England”s World Cup penalty curse. England fans would have been left fearing the worst at the sight of the Chelsea star missing a penalty in the FA Cup final at Wembley,” reports Mirror.

“I have missed penalties for England, I have missed penalties for Chelsea and it comes with the territory. But it would not put me off,” said Lampard.

“I am big enough to stand up. I missed [in the final] and it will play on my mind a little, but it will be completely overshadowed by the fact that we won the game and won the Double,” he added.

“It”s quite good for me too because that kind of thing makes me address it and look at it and when I go away with England I will work on that kind of stuff. Sometimes you need a little reminder of what you have got to do,” claimed Lampard.

Despite Lampard missing two penalties for his club this season, he still has an exceptional record from the penalty spot for club and country.

“England, World Cups and penalties do not go well together as Lampard will remember from seeing his spot-kick saved in the shoot-out with Portugal in the 2006 quarter-final defeat. He has not missed for England since being given penalty duties after the last World Cup, scoring four out of four,” reports Mirror.

The midfielder has managed a season”s best tally of 26 goals in 50 games for Chelsea this term and the two missed penalties are unlikely to play on his mind too much.

“It was a disappointing penalty at Wembley to say the least. I actually changed my mind in the run-up, which is a bit of a sin. Once you do that, you are probably going to miss and I did that,” admitted Lampard. (ANI)

Terry shrugs off injury fears, to play in Saturday’s FA Cup final

London, May 13 (ANI): Chelsea skipper John Terry, hurt his right foot tackling Daniel Sturridge in training, but is hoping to play in Saturday’s FA Cup final after giving England manager Fabio Capello a World Cup scare.

Terry’s injury raised fears that England’s ‘curse of the metatarsal’ has struck again. He went to hospital wearing a protective boot but scans revealed no major problem.

Gary Neville, David Beckham, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney all suffered broken metatarsals in the build-up to previous World Cups. So it was relief all round when Terry’s scan proved negative.

“I took a slight knock but with such an important match on Saturday the right course of action was to put a protective boot on.

“The scan has shown there is no break. I’m hoping to train tomorrow if not Friday and, of course, play in the FA Cup final,” The Sun quoted Terry, as saying.

The slight injury had been a worry for both Carlo Ancelotti and Capello, who announced his initial 30-man World Cup squad on Tuesday.

Losing Terry would have been a major blow for both coaches. (ANI)

Jordan ‘takes up yoga to beat her pregnancy curse’

London, May 10 (ANI): Katie Price a.k.a Jordan has taken up yoga after doctors warned her she may be unable to conceive because of toxins in her body from Botox and tanning, sources say.

The hottie’s cagefighter husband Alex Reid apparently advised her to do meditation, yoga.

Also, he recommended Emotional Freedom Techniques, which he learned while travelling the globe for TV show The Fight Of His Life.

“Kate was really sceptical at first but after Alex kept nagging she thought: ‘Hell, why not?’,” the Daily Star quoted a source, as saying.

The insider added: “She started with breathing exercises and yoga stretching but was soon asking Alex to teach her more advanced techniques.

“Not only does she now feel like a million pounds, it’s bringing her and Alex closer together.”

Also, Reid said: “I have a deeper connection with Kate as I feel more positive influences are rubbing off on her.” (ANI)

Mothers pass on the ‘curse of morning sickness’ to daughters

London, Apr 30 (ANI): Mothers-to-be are three times more likely to suffer from severe morning sickness if their mums did, a new study claims.

According to the study of 2.3 million births, mothers who suffer excessive nausea and vomiting in pregnancy – known as hyperemesis gravidarum – are at a threefold higher rate of having the condition if their mums had it too, reports The BBC.

To reach the conclusion, boffins analysed birth records, which included information on pregnancy complications, from 1967 to 2006.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, they said the study “shed a new light” on the causes of hyperemesis in pregnancy.

“It might lead to a better appreciation of the underlying biology,” they added. (ANI)

For real Erin Brokovich, Oscar-winning movie was a curse

London, Apr 19 (ANI): Julia Roberts won the Oscar for playing her, but for Erin Brokovich, the movie based on her life and name was more of a curse than a blessing.

The movie portrayed her real-life fight against water contamination in the tiny town of Hinkley, California.

Brokovich has revealed that while she was basking in her new-found fame and publicising her cause, her youngest daughter Elizabeth, now 19, became addicted to cocaine and prescription drugs.

In fact, Erin has had to put up with abuse from strangers over her image and private life.

She has also battled personality problems since the movie turned her life upside down.

“Since the movie came out it”s been very hard. It was my curse,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

Erin had sold her story to Hollywood bosses for a reported 65,000 pounds.

“The film was a lot about the case but there was so much of my personal life in there too. I really didn”t know that a lot of my life was going to be in there – me, the children, my romance at the time with George the biker guy.

“I was going to premieres, doing publicity, appearing in magazines, on TV.

“None of those things were in my life or my world before the film. I wasn”t looking for them or anticipating them – it was an enormous change.

“It”s been harder on me than people realise. I found it difficult to cope with the attention, difficult that people were judging me and making comments,” she added.

Erin”s daughter Elizabeth started taking drugs aged 12 and was hooked on cocaine and prescription pills by the age of 14.

While Erin is happy the movie raised awareness of environmental issues, nothing could have prepared her for the cruel personal attacks.

“The main negative from the movie was people”s judgments and criticisms. I would get comments like ”shut your mouth” or ”cover your boobs,”” she said, speaking from her home near Los Angeles. (ANI)

Fishermen not respecting sacred sites, court told

A court has heard commercial barramundi fishermen are not respecting sacred Aboriginal sites in the Northern Territory.

Commercial barramundi fisherman Darren Murray was this morning fined $5,000 after pleading guilty to setting up a gill net on a sacred site in the Blyth River in northern Arnhem Land.

The Darwin Magistrates Court heard Murray deliberately entered the river mouth, which has been a registered sacred site since 1985.

In a submission to the court, traditional owners said they have had problems with commercial fishermen for a long time, as “they sneak in and out of the estuary at night”.

They said fisherman did not respect Aboriginal law or culture.

They said when fishermen entered the sacred site, “it’s like a curse. We get sick and our children get sick” and their “dreamings will be chased away”.

Murray’s lawyer, Peter Maley, told the court that the fisherman has had trouble selling his wild barramundi catch because of the flood of “cheap imports coming in from Indonesia” and “restaurants preferring to buy that at a significantly reduced price.”

Mr Maley said the Territory’s wild barramundi industry was “under siege” from imports.

He said Murray was going to get out of the fishing industry because of this pressure.

The court heard Murray has been to court for two similar offences in the past decade.

Ogilvy out to smash Masters curse

Geoff Ogilvy’s season has failed to ignite after he won his opener in Hawaii in January, but the Australian is hardly worried about it ahead of his fifth US Masters campaign.

The reason being was that he has had other, more important things on his mind lately, namely wife Judi giving birth to the couple’s third child in February.

“I didn’t really kick on from a good start there – played OK, but not anything great,” he said.

“I mean, I don’t want to make excuses, but we did have a baby in the middle of February, which kind of threw

“So that, and the lack of sleep a little bit for the first few weeks, throws a different element in that wasn’t there last year at this time of the year.”

The 32-year-old from Adelaide made his big breakthrough at Winged Foot in 2006 when he kept his cool while everyone else around him was losing theirs to capture the US Open and he has been in contention at other majors since then, namely at the 2006 PGA Championship and the 2008 US Open.

But he has yet to really mount a challenge at the Masters, where his best performance to date was a tie for 15th place last year.

Ogilvy though believes there is no reason why he should not do well at Augusta National as the course reminds him of some of the Australian courses he grew up playing on back home.

“It’s like an Australian Open set-up, say, at Royal Melbourne which is similar in that if you miss it in the wrong spot on the green, you have absolutely no chance,” he said.

“You are just looking to get the chip shot on the green, which happens out here if you miss it in the wrong spot.

“If you miss it in the right spot, it’s really quite simple and I guess that’s the beauty of golf courses like these is that they invite you to try to work out where those good spots are and tempt you to learn where the bad ones are.”

Also on Ogilvy’s mind is the so-called Aussie curse that has seen his compatriots come to grief time and time again at the year’s first major, with Greg Norman the most notorious of the failures, no Aussie having ever won at Augusta.

But he sees real possibilities for the six-strong Australian contingent on hand this year comprising himself, an improving Adam Scott, Nathan Green, John Senden, Robert Allenby and Marc Leishman.

“It would not have been a surprise to me at the end of the week, if an Australian won,” he said.

“We have got three or four guys who could legitimately win the tournament and it would not be a shock.

“And it will probably remain that way until we win one. Hopefully it’s this year. It’s definitely coming. It’s imminent.”

Force lose Sheehan to hamstring injury

The Western Force’s injury curse continues with half-back Brett Sheehan ruled out of Saturday night’s clash with Super 14 champions the Bulls in Perth.

Sheehan was named in the starting line-up but was forced out on Friday after failing to fully recover from a hamstring niggle picked up in last weekend’s 14-10 home loss to New South Wales.

Chris O’Young will come into the side to replace him for the winless Force.

Flanker Sam Wykes (corked thigh) and hooker Ryan Tyrrell (neck) were also injured in that match and are also out, while winger Scott Staniforth is expected to overcome a hip complaint and play.

Wallabies David Pocock (finger), Richard Brown (shoulder) and Cameron Shepherd (quad) all continue lengthy injury absences.

“I can’t believe it,” Force captain Nathan Sharpe said.

“It’s sort of got to the point where you come down to training and you are scratching you’re head at who’s left.

“The guys who are coming in are quality players in their own right and it’s just about gelling and getting those combinations going.”

Brit office workers to be allowed 10-minute ‘Facebook break’!

London, Sept 11 (ANI): Bosses in Britian have decided to impose a new rule in the workplace which will allow employees a ‘Facebook break’ of 10 minutes a day.

The decision has been taken after a research suggested that Britain’s economy is suffering thanks to workers surfing social networking sites, reports The Telegraph.iles Ridgeway, a leading consultant at Employment Law Advisory Services (ELAS) says Facebook is a “curse.”

“They feel some staff are failing to do the job they’re paid for because they’re spending too much time on such websites,” he said.

“Some have said it appears to be a habit similar to smokers needing their fix of nicotine,” he added.

According to Ridgeway, social networking sites are not a part of workers “legal entitlement”.

“In days past, staff would have gathered around the office tea trolley for a quick chat. Now, they can talk to friends on the other side of the globe from their desks,” he said.

“But to remain able to do so means committing to doing the job they’re employed for. If they don’t and bosses take exception to what they believe to be an abuse, they could find themselves out of work and companies would be well within their rights to take such action,” he added. (ANI)

Jessica Simpson ‘paid a witch to put curse on ex- Tony Romo’

Washington, Aug 24 (ANI): If sources are to be believed, singer Jessica Simpson has cursed ex-boyfriend Tony Romo with the help of a witch she met on the internet.

She apparently has put a spell on the American footballer to stop him from falling in love again.

“Jessica is normally a really sweet girl, but she still can’t believe Tony callously dumped her,” Contactmusic quoted a source as telling National Enquirer magazine.

The insider added: “She found a woman in California. The two met at the star’s Beverly Hills home where they lit a candle, burned some incense and performed a couple of incantations.”

And in a more bitter taste, the singer seemingly hopes that it will ruin her former flame’s career too.

Simpson was dumped by Romo the night before her 29th birthday last month.(ANI)

After another world record performance, Bolt says he is not on drugs

Berlin (Germany), Aug.22 (ANI): Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt has again stressed he is not on drugs after another astonishing world-record performance.

The fastest man on the planet said he hoped people would one day stop asking if he was on performance-enhancing drugs.

“I keep telling people I’m clean, but I can’t make anyone believe it,” The Telegraph quoted Bolt, as saying after he smashed his own 200m record, running an amazing 19.19sec in the world championships final.

“I’ve just got to keep running and training. I get tested all the time. I’m not going to worry about it, because I work hard and get tested a lot. I know it’s going to be always in the sport; I’ve just got to counter it by being clean and running fast,” Bolt added.

Bolt has been linked by association to drugs after five of his fellow Jamaican sprinters tested positive recently for an obscure stimulant, methylhexaneamine. Two of the five were in Bolt’s training group.

There is a history of sprint stars falling to the curse of drugs, with Ben Johnson, Justin Gatlin, Linford Christie, Tim Montgomery, Dwain Chambers and Marion Jones all having their sporting legacy destroyed because of cheating.

But Bolt continues to prove he is simply a freak of nature, and the way he attacked the line in his latest record-breaking performance has most convinced he isn’t finished yet. (ANI)

Wendy Williams would love to have Whitney Houston on new TV show

New York, July 15 (ANI): Wendy Williams is apparently over her feud with Whitney Houston, for she has said that she would be more than happy to have the crooner on her new TV show.

The duo got into a massive row in 2003, when the radio host questioned Houston about her alleged drug problems.

This made the songbird to curse at Williams on-air.

However, talking at the launch of her TV program ‘The Wendy Williams Show’ at the Gates recently, the RJ said that she was ready to bury the hatchet, and would like Houston to come on her show.

“Whitney and I have history, but we’re also Jersey girls and women of a certain age, and I think we’re both in a really good place,” the New York Daily News quoted her as having said.

She added: “We have a new life to celebrate. I’d love to have Whitney on the show.” (ANI)

Wookey Hole Caves require witch who can cackle at œ50K a year

London, Jul 8 (ANI): A witch, who can cackle, is being sought after to live at Britain’s Wookey Hole Caves.

The caves situated near Wells, Somerset, are a favourite among the tourists.

And an advertisement has been placed at the local Job Centre for someone to teach visitors about witchcraft and magic after its previous employee retired.

The successful applicant ‘must be able to cackle’ and ‘must not be allergic to cats’, but will enjoy a salary of 50,000 pounds pro rata based on work during school holidays and at weekends.

Wookey Hole said that the role was open to men, women, and even trans-gender witches to comply with sexual discrimination laws.

Legend has it that the caves were home to the Wookey Witch who was turned to stone by Father Bernard who had been appointed by the Abbott of Glastonbury to rid villagers of her curse.

“Wookey Hole wants the appointee to go about her everyday business as a hag, so that people passing through the caves can get a sense of what the place was like in the Dark Ages,” the Telegraph quoted Daniel Medley, from Wookey Hole Caves, as saying.

“This was when an old woman lived in the caves with some goats and a dog, causing a variety of social ills including crop failures and disease.

“So the job is straightforward: live in the cave, be a witch, and do the things witches do,” he said.

The pro rata salary is based on work when required, mostly during the summer holidays, but also at Halloween and Christmas time.

Auditions for the role are being held on July 28 in front of a panel of judges who will assess applicants costume and character as well as the ability to perform witch tests.

“Wookey Hole is advertising nationally and hopes to attract a strong field of candidates, with the 50,000 pounds salary serving as a major incentive,” Medley said.

“Interviews for the post will involve on-site assessment incorporating a range or standard tasks.

“Ambitious witches, looking for a key career move, should turn up dressed for work and bring any essential witch accoutrements.

“A limited range of potion ingredients will be available.

“We are witchless at the moment so we need to get the role filled as soon as possible.

“We are looking for someone who is friendly, a little mischievous and with lots of character,” he added. (ANI)

Zoe Saldana likens Johnny Depp to ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’

New Delhi, May 18 (ANI): Johnny Depp is like ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’, at least that’s what his ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl’ co-star Zoe Saldana thinks.

Saldana has said that the 45-year-old actor goes into a complete personality transformation the moment the camera is switched on, reports the China Daily.

“He is the shyest person I ever met. The moment the camera is turned on, these characters that are within him come out and take control. Then when the director yells, ‘Cut!’ he goes back to being quiet. Very Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” she told Women’s Health magazine.

Dr. Jekyll was a fictional character-created by author Robert Louis Stevenson-who was a mild mannered physician, but after taking a potion he transforms himself into the violent Mr. Hyde.

And although Zoe finds Johnny uneasy in social situations, she has claimed that it is easy to get on with men. (ANI)

‘Fall Out Boy’ call on voodoo man to banish curse on U.S. tour

London, May 6 (ANI): Pop punk band Fall Out Boy have decided to call on a shaman for their current U.S. tour to banish a curse that has been plaguing them.

The band have been running into a number of bad incidents on their current road trip, including several injuries to crewmembers, technical glitches, and a bout of severe food poisoning.

After they became convinced that the tour is jinxed, they called in the witch doctor, and they even made “reverse voodoo dolls” in a bid to turn their luck around.

“It’s actually been a little bit cursed. We’ve had two trips to the hospital and we’ve had a show that was cancelled due to lightning,” the Daily Star quoted bass player Pete Wentz as telling TheAquarian.com.

“There was a food poisoning that ran rampant through one bus, and then someone broke their ankle, or did something to their ankle.

“So we have a shaman coming in to bless the tour today, and we’re making the opposite of voodoo dolls, whatever that is. There’s a bit of a hex on this tour, but the show’s nuts.

“We’re doing anti-rain dances. We’re going to make it happen. We need this show blessed,” he added. (ANI)

Chelsea’s Lamps wants to end Champions League KO curse

London, May 5 (ANI): Chelsea and England forward Frank Lampard is very keen to beat the curse that haunts the team in the Champions League.

Tomorrow night at Stamford Bridge, Barcelona stand in the way of the Blues reaching a second consecutive final, and Lampard admits being the nearly men of the European Cup in the past five years is a tag they want to get rid of.
Chelsea lost three semi-finals before making it to Moscow last year only to be beaten by Manchester United on penalties.

Having won everything in domestic football, Lamps is determined to add European glory to his list of achievements.

The Sun quoted the England star, 30, as saying: “We have basically achieved everything else domestically, so Europe is always the one that’s been hanging over us.”

Lamps revealed the fear of elimination is something that drives him and his team-mates on in their quest to win the competition. (ANI)

Sex workers walk ramp in West Bengal

Siliguri, Mar 8 (ANI): Celebrating the International Women’s Day, the sex workers in Siliguri walked the ramp on Sunday.

These women wanted to mark the occasion by raising their voices against the social curse on them.

These women reiterated the fact that poverty has compelled them to take up this profession and society should not ridicule them.

The North Bengal Art Academy, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) staged the fashion show wherein girls clad in colourful saris and bedecked in jewellery walked the ramp.

A couple of the participants expressed their fear of walking the ramp and also narrated their story of their dreams.

“For the first time in my life, I participated in a dance show when I was in college. At that time I was not scared because my relatives, friends, principal and teachers were there with me. But I was a bit nervous here because I am alone and there’s nobody here,” said Swapna Patwardhan, a sex worker.

On its part, the host NGO awarded the participants after the show.

One of the volunteers of North Bengal Art Academy mentioned that the show was organised to depict the inner identity of the sex workers.

“The objective behind this fashion show is to show the inner beauty of these women on the International Women’s Day. Many among them have an aspiration to be film artistes and models, and accordingly we groomed them for this his fashion show,” said Shomesh Ghosh, office bearer of North Bengal Art Academy, Siliguri. Attack on Sri Lankan players is brutal and callous: Altaf Hussain

London, Mar 5 (ANI): The founder of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) Altaf Hussain has condemned the terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricket players in Lahore on March 3, and said the attack was a barbaric and naked terrorism that deserves severest of condemnation.

“The attack was barbaric and naked terrorism that deserves severest of condemnation and was not only an attack on Sri Lankan cricket players but on Pakistan,” Hussain said in a statement.

“Lahore Attack, in which the callous and cold blooded terrorists attacked mercilessly on the Sri Lankan cricket players who as a goodwill gesture volunteered to play in Pakistan while the rest of the world had refused,” he added.

The leader also paid his tributes to the martyred policemen, and said that the entire nation was proud of their valour and salutes their sacrifices.

“I pray to the Almighty Allah to rest the soul of the martyred policemen in Jannat-ul-Firdaus and grant their family members strength to endure the losses of their loved ones. I also pray for a speedy recovery of the injured cricket players whose lives the Almighty Allah saved in this attack,” he added.
