India reimposes curfew in parts of Kashmir

India, July 10 (Reuters) – Indian authorities on Saturday re-imposed a curfew several hours ahead of schedule in some areas of Kashmir, including parts of the main city Srinagar, in response to protesters attacking security forces with stones, police said.

Authorities late on Friday had lifted a four-day long curfew that was introduced after some of the largest protests in two years against India rule. [ID:nSGE6682CY]

The curfew was to have come back into force later on Saturday evening, but was brought forward after police and protesters clashed in several places in the volatile region. In Srinagar, thousands of protesters led by separatist leader Mirwaiz Omar Farooq marched the streets demanding freedom.

The violence in Kashmir could affect efforts by India and Pakistan to revive a peace process that India suspended after the attacks in Mumbai in 2008, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistan-based militants.

India has blamed Pakistan-based militant group, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), of being behind the growing protests in Kashmir against Indian rule, but many locals believe the protests are mostly spontaneous.

Thai cabinet extends night curfew until May 29

Thailand’s cabinet has agreed to extend a night curfew in Bangkok and 23 provinces until May 29, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said on Tuesday.

Suthep said the curfew, which will be in force between midnight and 4 a.m., was necessary to prevent more unrest, but would not be in place for seven days, as was announced on Monday.

“We have cut the timeframe from seven to four days because we want to limit the impact on the public,” Suthep told reporters.

The curfew was put in place on May 19 after riots and arson attacks across Bangkok and in at least six provinces in the wake of an army crackdown to remove anti-government protesters in the capital.

Dozens trapped in Bangkok televison station blaze

Bangkok (Thailand), May 19 (ANI): Protesters have set fire to the offices of a TV station in Bangkok, trapping 100 people inside, officials say.

According to Sky News, other parts of the city have also been set ablaze, with fires burning at the Stock Exchange, several banks, the headquarters of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, the upmarket Central World shopping mall and a cinema complex that has collapsed.

Military officials say they have sent a helicopter to begin an airlift of staff from the Channel 3 station.

The arson attacks came in the wake of a deadly operation by the Thai army to break up the long-running anti-government protest, leaving five people dead, including an Italian journalist.

The government says a city wide curfew will be imposed on Wednesday night until 6am Bangkok time.

The army used armoured vehicles to punch into the protesters” fortified camp, smashing through tyres, bamboo stakes and razor wire.

Gunfire rattled around the city”s overpasses during several hours of street battles.

“It”s not over – the movement is not centrally led, it”s a genuine grass roots movement,” said one journalist monitoring the developments. (ANI)

Winehouse ‘plans second honeymoon with ex-hubby Fielder-Civil’

London, April 26 (ANI): Amy Winehouse is planning a second honeymoon with ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil.

The singer is said to be considering taking him to Havana.

But the reason for choosing the place appears to have more to do with smoking than sun and sand.

The couple has reportedly acquired a new habit – Cuban cigars.

“Smoking cigars is their new thing. It all started when Amy bought a pack of Romeo y Julieta for Blake, because she thinks they”re also tragic lovers The Sun quoted a friend as saying.

“Amy and Blake have been spending their time reading up on the history and the culture behind them. Amy, in particular, followed up their origin, in Cuba.

“She thinks there”s a kind of romance to it and would love to go there with Blake. She wants to go away to celebrate them being back together properly.

“It will be their second honeymoon. As soon as his curfew allows, they”ll be off,” the pal added. (ANI)

Brit woman, 66, fined £1K for selling goldfish to teenager

London, March 31 (ANI): A British great grandmother has been slapped with a fine of 1,000 pounds and ordered to wear an electronic tag for trading a goldfish to a teenaged boy.

Council officials caught pet shop owner Joan Higgins, 66, in an undercover sting.

Legal proceedings – costing an estimated 20,000 pounds – against her took eight months following which she was fined and slapped with a curfew.

And now Joan is not allowed to babysit her great grandson at his mother’s home or go to bingo.

Her son Mark, 47, of Sale, Greater Manchester, was asked to pay a fine of 750 pounds and ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work.

However, he has criticised the prosecution.

“I think it’s a farce and legal lunacy and I told the council that. What gets me so cross is that they put my mum on a tag. She’s nearly 70, for goodness’ sake,” the Daily Star quoted Mark, as saying.

He added: “Mum has been running the shop for 28 years and this is the first time that anything like this has ever happened.”

Last July the mother and son duo were caught selling goldfish to a 14-year-old boy, who was sent to the shop by Trafford council bosses.

A bill passed in 2005 makes it illegal to sell goldfish to under-16s and offenders can be sent to jail for up to a year.

At a hearing at Trafford Magistrates Joan and Mark pleaded guilty to selling the fish. (ANI)

Two more questioned over weekend riot

Two men have handed themselves in to police over Friday night’s riot in Oakleigh, in Melbourne’s south-east.

The men are being interviewed at the Frankston Police Station.

Up to 2,000 people were involved in the protest targeting the tyre company that cancelled a motor racing event.

The police air wing, dog squad were called in when protesters tried to smash the windows of the Bob Jane Tmart store.

A third man, 21-year-old Maxwell Lawson of Narre Warren, has been charged with affray and destroying the shop front window.

He appeared in court today and was granted bail.

Police told the court the gathering was organised up to week before by text messages and social networking websites, because the protesters were angry a drag racing event had been cancelled.

A magistrate ordered that Maxwell abide by a curfew between 9pm and 6am and report to police twice a week.

Police say the rioters caused between $30,000 and $50,000 damage.

Alcohol trading hours cut

A Queensland parliamentary committee looking into alcohol-related violence has recommended weekday trading hours be wound back to no later than 2am in entertainment precincts and 1am elsewhere.

In its report tabled this morning, the bipartisan committee recommends 4am trading on the weekend in the entertainment precincts, and 3am elsewhere, with all premises subject to a 2am lock-out.

It has also called for precincts to be declared as such and to have a management plan.

The committee has also recommended mandatory use of tempered glass or polycarbonate after midnight in all venues, other than those deemed to be low risk.

It says free water should be made available to patrons.

Closing hours for detached bottleshops are recommended to be wound back from 10pm to 9pm.

The committee says it supports increased penalties for violent offenders, and for more resources for police and liquor licensing authorities.

It has also recommended police and the courts have the power to ban offenders from the designated entertainment precincts.

The inquiry heard submissions from across Queensland on ways to curb alcohol-related attacks.

The committee held three public hearings and received more than 130 public submissions.

Other issues under consideration included the culture of drinking and the role parents can play in educating children.

The impact of alcohol-related violence on emergency service and health workers was also been considered.

Inquiry chairwoman, Labor MP Barbara Stone, says earlier closing will not hurt pubs and clubs around the state.

“We had a look at what people in the community … expect and we had a look at traders when they spoke to us [and] were telling us that their peak times are that Friday, Saturday night,” she said.

“So we don’t believe we have impacted too much on their best trading times.”

Queensland Police Union (QPU) president Ian Leavers said yesterday the State Government should adopt the 2am curfew for pubs and clubs, as applies in the city of Newcastle.

“They’ve seen a 20 to 30 per cent reduction in general crime [and] a 30 per cent reduction in serious violent assaults and as well as sexual assaults,” he said.

Police Minister Neil Roberts said yesterday he personally agrees with the QPU view.

“The industry I’m sure will be able to survive whatever the final hours are,” he said.

“I have a personal view that we don’t need to go through until 5am but ultimately we need to take into account all views and obviously this report will be a significant milestone in terms of dealing with alcohol-fuelled issues in community.”

Queensland Nurses Union (QNU) assistant secretary Beth Mohle also said yesterday there should be stricter penalties for drunken attacks on hospital staff.

“We really do want to see that those sort of like avenues pursued in circumstances where there is violence towards nurses and other health workers,” she said.

Identification scanners

Pubs and clubs will also be encouraged to install identification scanners under recommendations being put to Queensland Parliament.

As part of the proposal, venues using the technology could be given a reduction in license fees.

Law, Justice and Safety committee member Dean Wells has expressed concerns that the measure could create identity and privacy issues.

Committee chairwoman Barbara Stone says ID scanners can help to reduce violence.

“Knowing that there’s going to be a picture of them, their driver’s licence, their details if anything happens – that’s there, that’s there for police, that’s there for the club to say you’re not coming back,” she said.

“Now I don’t know about you but I’d be pretty upset if I wasn’t allowed to go to back to a club with my friends and enjoy my Friday night.”

Nigerian village on alert after bloody attack

Security forces in Nigeria are again on high alert following an attack on a village near the city of Jos, which killed at least 13 people.

Hundreds of people have been killed in sectarian violence in the area in the past few months.

A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been enforced by the Nigerian military around the city of Jos since January, but still people are being brutally murdered.

In the latest violence, witnesses say Muslim herders disguised as soldiers attacked a predominantly Christian village killing more than a dozen people, mostly women and children.

The attackers struck at night and reportedly used machetes to butcher their victims before burning homes.

Survivors say some of their relatives are still missing.

The killings are believed to be related to a feud between the nomadic Muslim group Fulani and the Berom, who are Christian farmers.

When Rahul speaks, Maya’s throne shakes: Congress

New Delhi, March 16 (IANS) ‘When Rahul speaks, Maya’s throne shakes,’ said Congress Tuesday, reacting to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s warning to the people to guard against Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi as he would play Dalit card in the state to win their votes.

Addressing the silver jubilee rally of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Lucknow Monday, Mayawati, referring to Rahul Gandhi’s visits to Dalit homes and his meal-sharing with Dalit families in Uttar Pradesh villages, warned the people to ‘guard against’ him and his mother, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. They ‘will continue to play such tricks to impress you’, she said.

The Congress also slammed Mayawati for her alleged spending of crores of rupees to organise the rally and her administration’s failure in containing the communal violence in Bareilly.

‘When Bareilly is burning, the Nero of UP is playing the piano,’ Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said.

On the expenses for the BSP rally, Tewari noted there was no money for farmers hit by drought and the victims of Ashram stampede in Pratapgarh. ‘What is happening in UP?’ he asked.

The party also demanded a judicial probe by a sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court into the communal violence in Bareilly city where a minor communal clash followed by sporadic incidents of arson March 2 led the administration to clamp curfew in several parts of the city and Bareilly district.
