Rooney looks very tired, drained: Capello

London, May 12 (ANI): With 2010 football World Cup finals being less than four weeks away, England boss Fabio Capello has said that he has inherited a shattered and drained Wayne Rooney.

England’s chances of winning the World Cup rest on Rooney’s performance and in the last few weeks, the 24-year-old striker has fought to play despite knee, ankle and groin injuries.

Capello said: “He has played a lot of games this season. At the end of it he looked very tired.”

The Italian believes Rooney probably needed more rest after injuring an ankle against Bayern Munich and returning to England on crutches.

Rooney was back for the return leg of the Champions League quarterfinal a week later but groin problems followed, the Daily Express reports.

“After the ankle injury, the balance of his body was not the same, so it is easy to get injured,” Capello said.

Now Capello believes Rooney must rest and recuperate in order to fire on all cylinders in England’s opening World Cup game against the USA on June 12.

The England manager insisted: “I think Rooney will be fit in a short time. I hope so because he is a very important player for us.”

Capello and his staff will monitor Rooney closely in the Austrian Alps and he could be rested or used sparingly in the two warm-up games. England’s head coach is hoping the camp will recapture the spirit, which helped the team qualify for South Africa so emphatically. (ANI)

Chelsea Clinton flashes engagement ring at Broadway”s ”Promises, Promises”

New York, April 27 (ANI): Former U.S. First Daughter Chelsea Clinton flashed her sizeable diamond engagement ring from Marc Mezvinsky for the first time at the opening night of Broadway”s “Promises, Promises.”

The 30-year-old bride-to-be arrived at the musical on crutches having broken her heel earlier this month, reports the New York Daily News.

She is expected to shed her cast in time to marry her investment banker beau this summer.

Clinton has not revealed the venue for the impending marriage.

However, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told CNN in December that the wedding would be intimate.

“It will be a private affair. It will be for [Chelsea''s] close friends and that”s the way it should be,” she said. (ANI)

Chelsea Clinton may have to limp up the aisle

New York, Apr 16 (ANI): Former US President Bill Clinton’s daughter Chelsea has broken her foot and has no idea how it happened.

The former first daughter has a plastic cast on her right leg.

And she’s been telling friends she went to her doctor after feeling increasing pain and learned she’d broken her heel, reports The New York Post.

It is believed that Chelsea would be off her crutches well before her wedding in July.

Meanwhile, her injury has not dampened her spirits-she was spotted around town with fiance Marc Mezvinsky and she’s even continued classes at the Soul Cycle spin studio. (ANI)

Stewart to stand trial in September

NRL star Brett Stewart will face trial in September over claims he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl after his club’s 2009 season launch.

The 25-year-old Manly fullback was last month committed to stand trial over the alleged assault.

Today, Stewart appeared on crutches in Sydney’s Downing Centre District Court when his matter was briefly mentioned.

Justice Peter Berman set a trial date of September 13.

Stewart has pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual intercourse without consent and assault with an act of indecency.

The alleged incident happened in March last year outside the teenager’s North Manly apartment complex.

Stewart did not say anything in court today and declined to speak to reporters outside.

Broken leg may keep Fabregas out for season, World Cup

London, Apr 1(ANI): Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas, who limped out of the Emirates on crutches, suffered a hairline fracture after a dangerous tackle from Barcelona defender Carles Puyol during their Champions League quarterfinal game on Wednesday.

Though Fabregas scored a penalty with his broken leg, which sealed a dramatic Arsenal fightback, it is feared that he will be out for the rest of the season and may miss this summer’s World Cup finals in South Africa as well.

However, the 22-year-old said: “The team can definitely do it without me. Barcelona has lost big players like Puyol and Pique so I don”t think it is the same without them.”

“We will see but it will be tough and I think that we can make it. I think this is the best team I have faced in my life. Theo made such a difference, he created a lot of problems and I think he was the best player,” The Sun quoted Fabregas, as saying.

Talking about the brave hit from the spot-kick before collapsing in agony, Fabregas said: “I took the penalty quite strong and after that I went to get the ball and then I couldn’t walk any more.”

“I knew in my mind I was not 100 per cent and I knew in my mind there was something there, but until the penalty I was feeling quiet good. It was a gamble worth taking, it was an amazing experience, an amazing game and I will remember it all my life,” he added. (ANI)

Rooney’s ankle ‘sprain’ won’t scupper his World Cup chances

London, Apr 1(ANI): Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney’s scan has revealed that his sprained ankle will heal in time for him to play in this summer’s World Cup in South Africa.

Rooney had injured his ankle in United’s Champions League game against Bayern Munich on Tuesday, and after initial medical reports he had been ruled out of action for a month.

Though it means that the 24-year-old will not kick another ball for United this season, fears of his non-availability for the much anticipated tournament have been put behind.

The sight of Rooney hobbling on crutches had made the whole nation worried, as it was an action replay of his 2006 scare when a broken bone in his foot made him doubtful for that year’s World Cup.

However, this time he looks much more certain to play after his new injury was diagnosed as “tweaked ankle ligaments”.

“It’s not great news for us, but it”s a brilliant result for every England fan. He has basically tweaked his right ankle ligaments and his foot has swollen up. But with a bit of rest, physio, hydro and ice treatments he should be raring to go to South Africa,” The Sun quoted a United source, as saying.

Rooney had limped off in agony after a challenge by Bayern striker Mario Gomez in the final seconds of United”s Champions League defeat.

It is the 12th significant foot or ankle injury the striker has suffered in his career – and there are already growing concerns over a knee problem he is carrying. (ANI)

Rooney’s injury may not be bad enough to keep him out of WC

London, Mar 31(ANI): Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, who injured his ankle in his club’s Champions League game against Bayern Munich on Tuesday, has been ruled out of action for a month.

Though that means that he will not kick another ball for United this season, fears of his non-availibity for this summer’s World Cup in South Africa, appear to have been discounted.

Rooney had limped off in agony after a challenge by Bayern striker Mario Gomez in the final seconds of United’s Champions League defeat.

According to reports, the 24-year-old hobbled away from the Allianz Arena on crutches with his ankle in a protective plastic cast.

The injury means that Rooney will also miss the crucial return match against Bayern next Wednesday, with United already trailing 2-1 after Ivica Olic’s dramatic late winner.

Rooney will fly back to Manchester with his team-mates before being ferried away for a private MRI scan on the right ankle ligaments, The Mirror reports.

England has a World Cup nightmare as Rooney injured in Champions League clash

London, Mar.31 (ANI): England was facing their biggest World Cup nightmare on Tuesday after Wayne Rooney suffered a major injury scare.

The nation”s most important striker limped off in agony as Manchester United were stunned by Bayern Munich in a Champions League cliffhanger.

According to The Sun, Rooney hobbled away from the Allianz Arena on crutches with his ankle in a protective plastic cast.

Rooney crumpled to the ground in pain during injury time after a challenge by Bayern striker Mario Gomez.

He needed to be helped from the pitch and, if there is damage to his ligaments, he could be out for up to six weeks – meaning he will miss the end to the season.

He will have an MRI scan today.

The Red Devils will almost certainly be without Rooney for Saturday”s Premier League title showdown with Chelsea.

There also appears little chance Rooney will be fit for the return match against Bayern next Wednesday, with United already trailing 2-1 after Ivica Olic”s dramatic late winner.

Coach Alex Ferguson said: “Wayne has hurt his ankle. It”s too early to say the condition of it but we will know tomorrow.”

England coach Fabio Capello and the entire country will now be left praying the injury will not keep Rooney out of the World Cup with two months still to go before the tournament starts.

Brett Stewart to face sexual assault trial

NRL star Brett Stewart has been committed to stand trial over the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl last year.

The 25-year-old Manly full-back is accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl outside her home on Sydney’s northern beaches.

A Magistrate has decided the evidence will be put before a jury at the District Court in Sydney next month.

Earlier, the father of the alleged victim told the committal hearing that his daughter was upset when she first told him about what had happened.

He said he confronted Stewart outside the family home.

The girl’s father said the star was slurring his words, that his fly was open and his belt was undone and he repeatedly said ” I didn’t touch her bro”.

He testified Stewart threatened his family.

Stewart’s lawyers accused the girl’s father of telling a ‘pack of lies’ and detailed his past criminal history which includes a jail sentence for fraud.

The girl’s father admitted he has been jailed but told Stewart’s lawyers “it doesn’t excuse what your client did to my daughter”.

Stewart left the court on crutches as the result of a knee injury suffered at the start of this year’s NRL season.

He did not comment to the waiting media.

The 25-year-old is due to face court again on April 9.

Crushed Thompson could be out a year

Melbourne Victory’s star striker Archie Thompson is facing up to 12 months on the sidelines after a serious knee injury destroyed his, and the club’s, A-League grand final.

Thompson was stretchered off after 12 minutes following a challenge from Sydney FC defender Simon Colosimo – a strong but fair tackle after which the striker landed awkwardly and immediately clutched his knee in pain.

Victory coach Ernie Merrick said medical staff had confirmed Thompson had damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

He looks almost certain to need a full knee reconstruction – adding further gloom to Melbourne’s night after losing 4-2 on penalties in an epic A-League decider at Docklands on Saturday night.

Thompson emerged on crutches once the match went into extra-time when the scores were deadlocked at 1-1 – his knee heavily bandaged.

“It’s not looking good – it’s looking that way (like a torn anterior cruciate),” Merrick said.

“It was pretty hard to play our best football losing Archie.”

Thompson had been the catalyst for Melbourne’s major semi-final win over Sydney FC a fortnight ago with the winning goal, and also famously scored five goals in Melbourne’s 2007 grand final win over Adelaide United.

Thompson will miss the club’s trip to Japan for its Asian Champions League clash with Kawasaki Frontale on Tuesday, as well as ending any slim hopes he may have had of joining the Socceroos at this year’s World Cup.

He is now likely to have surgery within the week should scans confirm a full tear of the ligament.

Thompson is the third Victory player to seriously damage a knee this season, with midfielder Billy Celeski and fullback Matthew Kemp also succumbing to similar injuries.

Upset Beckham says he will be back

London, Mar.16 (ANI): An upset England mid-fielder David Beckham has vowed to bounce back from his Achilles injury, which has ruled him out of this year”s World Cup in South Africa.

“I am upset but want to thank everyone for their messages of support. I hope to make a swift and full recovery,” The Mirror quoted the 34-year-old, as saying on his web site.

Meanwhile, Dr Sakari Orava, who operated on Becks at the Mehilainen Hospital in Helsinki, has said that there is no chance of Beckham making it to the World Cup.

Becks picked up the injury while playing for AC Milan on Sunday.

Becks hobbled off his private jet on crutches as he touched down at Turku airport yesterday. He was then whisked to the hospital in a SUV.

The 35-year-old scrapped a host of work engagements to be there.

A source said: “The entire family is absolutely broken by this.

Posh is expected to stay in Finland for 48 hours before returning to LA to finish a commercial shoot.

She will then fly to Milan with children Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz, to Milan for the Easter reunion.

England boss Fabio Capello gave the stricken star a boost by declaring he would not close the door on his international career.

Sultan Kosen stands eight-foot-one-inch tall and was unveiled as the tallest man in the world by the Guinness World Records.osen’s height is a result of a tumour in his pituitary gland, which has led to an over production of growth hormones, reports the National Geographic News.

The condition called pituitary gigantism has also led his feet to grow to almost 15 inches, while his hands are larger than 10 inches.t was only after the tumour was removed last year, that Kosen stopped growing.

The 27-year old is forced to use crutches as his height has weakened his knee joints.

The now-famous Kosen wants to travel around the world and meet a woman who would like to marry him. (ANI)

World’s tallest man looking for love

London, Sept 17 (ANI): A Turkish man has been officially named as the tallest man in the world, but he says his height often makes him unattractive to girls.

The 27-year-old Sultan Kosen is 8ft 1in tall and has 11in-wide hands and 15in-wide feet.

He was crowned the world’s tallest man at the London launch of the 2010 edition of Guinness World Records.

Sultan has been longing for a ladylove and has brighter hopes now that he is famous.

The Daily Express quoted him as saying: “The first thing I want to do is have a car that I can fit in but more than that I want to get married,” he said. “I’ve never had a girlfriend. They were usually scared of me. I’m hoping now that I am famous I will be able to meet lots of girls.”

Blow-up sheep, false leg enlisted among items mislaid by guests in hotel rooms

London, August 24 (ANI): A study conducted by Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels has found a blow-up sheep and a false leg to be among thousands of items left in hotel rooms.he survey further revealed that a printer, crutches, and dentures were also mislaid by absent-minded guests.

The surveyors say that 2,000 pounds in cash, a Gucci watch, and a monk fancy dress outfit were also among the recovered items.

According to hotel managers, around 2.5 million-pound million worth of items are left behind each year.

They say that phone chargers and underwear are the most-recovered things.

Lady with a phone: Devgan gifts Bipasha a Blackberry

Mumbai, July 2 (IANS) Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu has got a swanky new toy – a Blackberry – gifted to her by her co-star and producer Ajay Devgan for working round the clock for his new film “All the Best”.
And though Bipasha has lost all her numbers and she can’t identify any caller, she just can’t get enough of her new phone.

“I love it! I’m going totally crazy with it. Though I’ve no numbers on it and am trying to figure it out, I just can’t get enough of it,” says the actress who finished shooting for Ajay Devgan’s comedy “All The Best” in Goa this week.

Devgan gifted the phone to Bipasha out of the blue (or shall we say, black?) on the last day of shooting for working round the clock including late nights and early mornings. In fact Bipasha kept off the phone to the extent of not even connecting with her boyfriend John Abraham who was limping around on crutches in Mumbai trying to promote his new film.

Apparently Bipasha also agreed to do an additional role in “All The Best” without charging a single penny extra.

Devgan known to be a generous producer had heard Bipasha mention she wanted a Blackberry.

The actress said: “Yeah, Ajay knew I wanted it. In fact it was he who got me interested in it. It is actually a gift in appreciation for working long hours and changing at lightning speed between shots when we had loads of work to finish. Ajay is a fabulous co-star and producer.”

Bipasha soon leaves for Hyderabad to shoot the songs for “All The Best”. On Saturday she also watched her boyfriend’s new film “New York” finally.

“I’m so proud of him,” she whispered.

CPI, India’s oldest Left party, wrestles to be alive

New Delhi, April 6 (IANS) More than 80 years after its birth, the Communist Party of India (CPI) is struggling to stay relevant, widely seen as a poor also-ran ahead of another general election.

For a party that once enjoyed support all the way from Peshawar in undivided India’s northwest to Chittagong in the east, the CPI today needs crutches to win Lok Sabha seats.

Party leaders admit they are faced with daunting problems, the most serious being the ballooning of caste-based outfits that have undercut the CPI’s mass base.

‘We do face challenges in this new era,’ CPI leader C.K. Chandrappan told IANS, adding that casteist political parties eroded the CPI’s base, particularly in the populous northern India.

The CPI’s vote share in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections was a pathetic 1.4 percent and it won a mere 10 seats of the 34 it contested. Whatever it won came thanks to support from friendly parties.

That would have taken away its status as a ‘national party’ had the Election Commission not changed rules in 2005. Only recognised parties can afford fixed election symbols.

Chandrappan conceded that the CPI’s past glory meant nothing since it had virtually stopped growing. ‘It is a fact,’ he said.

‘The party could not grow after the implementation of the Mandal Commission report (in 1990),’ he added, referring to then prime minister V.P. Singh’s decision to go for controversial caste-based job quotas that brought about a radical shift in Indian politics.

The importance attached to caste helped regional parties to grow, eating away the support of Left parties, including the CPI that always overlooked factors such as caste and religion.

‘So many caste-based parties emerged in northern India after the implementation of the Mandal Commission report. People were misled by the caste-based parties,’ Chandrappan said.

According to CPI national secretary Shameem Faizee, it now has 642,000 members in a country of 1.2 billion people, slightly up from 550,000 three years ago.

He too admitted that the CPI was weak in most northern states.

This is the same CPI that was the second largest political party in India after the Congress at one point after its birth in 1925. The CPI was the main opposition in parliament after the 1952 general election.

In 1957, the CPI made history when it became the first Communist outfit in the world to take power through the ballot box. This happened in Kerala.

The CPI suffered a major blow in 1964 when it split, leading to the birth of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M). The CPI’s fall was speeded up after it supported then prime minister Indira Gandhi’s 1975-77 Emergency rule when democratic rights were curbed and thousands jailed.

The collapse of the Soviet Union, the CPI’s ideological parent, added to its crisis.

Eventually, the CPI began to play second fiddle to the CPI-M, which went on to form governments in West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura, with the former as a junior ally.

But it still has dozens of affiliated organisations, including the influential All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), a trade union that was once set up by the Congress but which the Communists seized control of during the British era.

In the staggered Lok Sabha elections beginning April 16, the CPI is contesting 50-55 seats across the country. Political analysts say it would be lucky to win 10 seats.

‘Naturally, we want to improve our standing in parliament. And we will,’ CPI national deputy general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy told IANS.

Most political pundits have their fingers crossed over that claim.

Beijing upholds two-year sentence for rights activist

Beijing – A Beijing court has upheld a two-year prison sentence for a rights activist without holding an open appeal hearing or considering vital evidence not presented at her trial, her husband said Tuesday.

The court notified an attorney for Ni Yulan that it had rejected her appeal of a prison sentence passed in December for “obstructing public business,” her husband, Dong Jiqin, told the German Press Agency dpa.

The court continued to withhold “crucial evidence,” including a video that authorities said allegedly contained footage of Ni beating police officers, Dong said by telephone.

Dong had prepared a defence case for Ni’s trial in December, but he was not allowed into the courtroom.

The court also objected to well-known lawyer Li Fangping representing Ni in the appeal, Li told US-based Radio Free Asia.

Dong said lawyers were allowed to visit Ni about two weeks ago.

“Since she was arrested, I have not seen her at all,” Dong said. “It’s nearly one year.”

Ni, 48, was arrested on April 15 when she tried to stop about two dozen people from knocking down a wall enclosing part of the yard outside their home, which they had refused to vacate for developers despite years of pressure and threats.

She spent eight months in detention before her trial.

The police claimed that Ni caused serious injury to a worker while she was trying to stop them from damaging her property.

They later accused her of kicking an officer while in custody, Dong said earlier.

Ni was left disabled after alleged abuses during an earlier spell of police detention.

Her career as a lawyer was first interrupted in 2002 when police illegally detained her for 75 days for filming a forced relocation.

During that detention, Dong said, Ni was beaten and not given medical treatment. She was left with permanent back and leg injuries and now walks with the aid of crutches, he said.

Ni then lost her right to practise law after a criminal conviction in late 2002 on the same charge of obstructing public business.

She told her lawyer that the police had confiscated her crutches and made her crawl to use the bathroom during her latest detention, Dong said.

Authorities in Beijing’s Xicheng district razed the family home in November as part of a local government redevelopment plan. (dpa)
