Nepal PM assuages India’s concerns, says won’t allow fake note smuggling

Kathmandu, Sep 9 (ANI): Nepal Prime Minister Madhav Kumar has said his government is really concerned about the Fake Indian Currency Note (FICN) racket and would take proper action against anyone who indulges in the practice.

Talking to reporters in Birganj in the Terai plains near the Indo-Nepalese border, Nepal said, “We are really concerned about this racket and if anyone uses our land to supply fake currency into India, we will take proper action.”

“Any unlawful activities detrimental to the interest of our neighbouring country will not be allowed,” he added.

He also assured India that Nepal soil will not be used for the smuggling fake of Indian currency into India.

His assurance came following the nabbing of two Nepali nationals by the anti terror squad of Madhya Pradesh in connection with a fake Indian currency racket that revealed the involvement of former Crown Prince Paras and India’s most wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim.

They further revealed that Yunus Ansari, the son of a minister, was the conduit between Paras and Dawood, who between them have been pushing in crores of fake Indian currency into India.

According to sources, Dawood manages the printing and manufacture of the fake currency, while Paras is responsible for its transit from other countries into Nepal and India.

Paras reportedly used his influential position to ensure the money reached the designated transit points on the India-Nepal border without a hitch. (ANI)

Pak Qaeda hand in 2006 trans-Atlantic bomb plot revealed

London, Sep.8 (ANI): New evidence put before a British jury during a retrial of three Brit Muslim convicts suggests that the men used code words to discuss their plans with an al-Qaeda fixer based in Pakistan.

The e-mails and conversations suggest that the plot was in its final stages, possibly days away from execution in 2006.

The seven daily flights highlighted by the three plotters were: 14.15 United Airlines Flight 931 to San Francisco; 15.00 Air Canada Flight 849 to Toronto; 15.15 Air Canada Flight 865 to Montreal; 15.40 United Airlines Flight 959 to Chicago; 16.20 United Airlines Flight 925 to Washington; 16.35 American Airlines Flight 131 to New York; 16.50 American Airlines Flight 91 to Chicago.

According to The Telegraph and the Daily Express, the batteries the gang planned to use as part of their detonators were bought in Pakistan.

An ingredient in the bomb mix was the orange soft drink Tang – sold in Pakistan – which had a high sugar content to aid the explosion.

A British intelligence source said: “The use of drink bottles sold in Pakistan and batteries sold in Pakistan underline the plot’s ties to that country. The foot soldiers were from Britain – but the organisers were in Pakistan.”

A security source said of the conspiracy: “It was very clever and the airport scanners would not have picked up the devices at all.”

Prosecutor Peter Wright told the Woolwich Crown Court in South East London how the would-be bombers were “a cell of home-grown terrorists activated and directed by a designated leader in Pakistan.”

That was confirmed by a government source in Pakistan, who said the plot was believed to have originated “with al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.”

Seized e-mails showed the chain of terror stretched from there, across the lawless border to Pakistan, to London and to the woods of High Wycombe where explosives were buried.

The aim was to mirror the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, which killed 259 passengers and 11 in the Scottish town.

Aliases exposed during the trial revealed the terror kingpin in Pakistan was dubbed “Paps” or “Papa”.

Ali called himself Imran and Chacha and also set up email accounts in the bogus names Tippu Khan and Jameel Masood.

His co-conspirators used aliases such as Fatty, Arro and Nigga.

Hydrogen peroxide was known as “aftershave”, police surveillance as “skin problems” and martyrdom videos were referred to as “wedding tapes”.

It is also thought that the bomb makers received training at an al-Qaeda camp in Pakistan.

A mystery Pakistani, thought to be a top al-Qaeda envoy, made contact with the three would-be suicide bombers during a flying visit to Britain in June 2006.

Experts who tested the explosive mix on the aircraft were horrified.

A witness said: “It was absolutely devastating.” (ANI)

World’s smallest parrot filmed in wild for first time

London, September 8 (ANI): The world’s smallest parrot, which is not much bigger than an adult person’s thumb, has been filmed in the wild for the first time.

According to a report by BBC News, an expedition team filming in Papua New Guinea for the BBC programme ‘Lost Land of the Volcano’ caught two of the buff-faced pygmy parrots on camera.

Another adult, which weighs less than half an ounce, was also trapped by the expedition team’s bird expert.

On average, buff-faced pygmy parrots (Micropsitta pusio) stand less than 9cm tall and weigh 11.5g (0.41oz).

They are found across the northern lowlands of the island of New Guinea from the west to the southeastern tip, up to an altitude of around 800m.

Males and females look similar, but females have less prominent markings on the head.

The birds have green feathers with yellowish plumage on their underparts; while their cheeks, face, and crown are more buff-coloured, hence their name.

BBC wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan first discovered a tiny nest belonging to two parrots deep within pristine rainforest.

The birds nest in termite mounds, using their beaks and claws to dig their way in before laying eggs in the hole created.

Buchanan staked out the nest from within a camouflaged hide, and was rewarded after a long wait when two birds returned.

He filmed the pair at their nest entrance, as the male and female reinforced their bond by rubbing against one another.

Later, another parrot was trapped unharmed by Dr Jack Dumbacher, an ornithologist from the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, US, who had accompanied the BBC expedition team.

Buff-faced pygmy parrots do not eat fruit and nuts but lichen and fungi.

However, so little is still known about their dietary habits that it has proved difficult to rear the birds in captivity. (ANI)

Button launches into f-word rage rant over title bid

London, Aug.28 (ANI): Jenson Button launched into a furious f-word rant over his title bid last night.

The Formula One championship pacesetter was fuming after his desire to win the title was questioned, reports The Sun.

Asked to react to claims his recent form suggested he did not want to win the drivers’ crown, Button lost his rag.

The Brawn GP star, who has seen his lead cut to 18 points after four races without a victory, blasted:

“I don’t think people are saying that seriously. Who would possibly say that? Does Jenson want to win the title or not? It is a pretty silly question isn’t it?

“Why the f*** am I here? That is not a question is it? Does he want to win the title? No, I want to finish second or third. What I would like to do now is stand up and walk away, have a good weekend and then we will talk about it afterwards. When you have one bad race there are always silly questions.”

Earlier Red Bull rival Sebastian Vettel had pumped up the pressure on Button by telling him: You have gone off the boil!

The German ace, 22 reckons Button’s losing streak proves he is feeling the heat of the title battle.

He declared: “I am not giving up on the title.

Button has managed just 11 points in the last four grands prix, after winning six of the previous seven. (ANI)

Cricket’s new top dogs, the Proteas promise to look after No.1

Johannesburg, Aug.26 (ANI): South African skipper Graeme Smith has vowed to hold on to the number one Test ranking for “as long as possible”.

The Proteas are the game’s new top dogs while Sri Lanka and India have also leapt above Australia in the rankings, leading players to reconcile with themselves what the fans already know; that decades of dominance are over and they no longer qualify as the world’s best following a third series defeat from their past five.

“The players deserve it for the hard work they have put in over the past two years and the outstanding results that have been achieved. We want to hold on to this ranking for as long as possible,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying.

Australian batsman Michael Hussey said: “I think this team has got a lot of improvement to go. I think in the cold light of day we’re probably not the best team in the world, and we’ve got to be honest with that.”

Hussey and captain Ricky Ponting, both 34, have left the door ajar on possibly returning to win the Ashes in England in 2013 after the painful loss.

“I was shattered, absolutely shattered. I was pretty emotional at the end of it all, sitting down there. The boys had gone on to the ground, I was taking my pads off in the dressing room and it was pretty hard to take,” Hussey said.

Australia will continue to struggle matching South Africa, Sri Lanka and India in the race for the crown, as all three are well advanced in development of young squads. (ANI)

Lockerbie bomber once again declares his innocence

Tripoli (Libya), Aug.22 (ANI): Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi, the man accused of perpetrating the bombing of a Pan Am Flight 103 that claimed 270 lives in 1988 in Lockerbie, southern Scotland, has once again proclaimed his innocence.

In an interview to The Times at his house, in the Dimachk area of Tripoli, al-Megrahi who was released by the Scottish authorities earlier this week on grounds of ill health, said: ” I always believed I would come back if justice prevailed.”

He did not come across as bitter or angry but continued to insist on his innocence, as he has done from the day of his conviction. He abandoned his appeal, he said, not because he was guilty but to give himself the best possible chance of going home before he died.

He had applied to be freed on compassionate grounds and also to be transferred to a Libyan prison under the terms of an agreement Britain and Libya signed in April.

One of the conditions of the latter was that all legal proceedings had to be finished.

He denied reports that he had been pressured to drop the appeal by a Scottish or British government terrified that such a hearing would expose a grave miscarriage of justice, but he added: “If there is justice in the UK I would be acquitted or the verdict would be quashed because it was unsafe. There was a miscarriage of justice.”

Al-Megrahi promised that before he died he would present new evidence through his Scottish lawyers that would exonerate him.

“My message to the British and Scottish communities is that I will put out the evidence and ask them to be the jury,” he said. He refused to elaborate.

Asked who, then, was responsible for the deaths of 270 people who died in the Lockerbie bombing, al-Megrahi smiled. “It’s a very good question but I’m not the right person to ask.”

He insisted that it was not Libya and would not be drawn on suggestions that it was Syria, Iran or the Palestinians.

He said that he understood why many of the victims’ relatives were angry at his release.

“They have hatred for me. It’s natural to behave like this,” he said, although he pointedly added that others had written to him in prison to say that they forgave him whether he was guilty or innocent.

“They believe I’m guilty which in reality I’m not. One day the truth won’t be hiding as it is now. We have an Arab saying: ‘The truth never dies’.”

Meanwhile, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s son, Saif, has claimed that al Megrahi’s release was linked to trade deals between Britain and Libya.

Saif al Islam Gaddafi said that Megrahi’s return was a “victory” for all Libyans.

According to The Telegraph, he made the claims in a television interview for Libyan television recorded as he accompanied Megrahi on the flight back from Scotland to Libya on Thursday.

The UK government has vehemently denied the claims.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “There is no deal. All decisions relating to Megrahi’s case have been exclusively for Scottish ministers, the Crown Office in Scotland and the Scottish judicial authorities.” (ANI)

London, August 21 (ANI): Two Londoners were branded “Dumb and Dumber” by a lawyer on Thursday, after they stole a digital camera memory card storing holiday snaps of Prince William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton.

Kingston Crown Court, Surrey, later ordered Market trader Charlie Ewins, 26, and electrician Leon Sesay, 25, to do 100 hours unpaid work, and pay 125-pound costs after admitting theft.

The two friends had tried to sell the card for 50,000 pounds, after it was taken from the car of Kate’s sister Pippa, 24.

According to the Daily Express, the pictures showed William wearing a woman’s hat, and Kate doing yoga in a bikini, while on a Caribbean holiday. (ANI)

Ex-Miss USA says Sarah Palin can offer ‘so much more’

Washington, July 10 (ANI): Responding to Sarah Palin’s resignation from the post of Alaska Governor, former Miss USA Shanna Moakler has said that the former Republican Vice-Presidential candidate can still do “so much more”.

The reality star has said that Palin certainly has the potential to really make an impact.

“I think she can make a lot more money if she resigns, she has a lot more to offer us than her current position,” Fox News quoted Moakler as saying at Diddy’s White Party over the weekend.

Moakler hit headlines earlier this year when she resigned from her position at the co-executive director of the Miss California pageant, after Donald Trump announced that the controversial Carrie Prejean could keep her crown.

Tom Cruise joins pal James Packer on cruise says report

Melbourne, Jul 9 (ANI): American actor Tom Cruise is rumoured to have joined his pal James Packer on a cruise after he left Melbourne on July 7.

As the actor’s wife actress Katie Holmes and their daughter Suri remain at Crown Towers, Cruise is believed to have left Australia for a few days on board one of Packer’s yachts, reports News.com.au.

The Packer pleasure ship, the Arctic P, has been moored in Tahiti’s Port de Papeete in recent months, a convenient flight across the Pacific for the men who share a close friendship and love of recreational activities.

The two have not spent time together in a long time, and ever since they got married and had children, they have not had the opportunity to catch up.

Cruise has proved a loyal friend to Packer in the past, helping the then media scion through the One.Tel crisis, introducing him to his Church of Scientology at his lowest point, and being at his side following the death of his father, Kerry. (ANI)

Islamic fundamentalists jailed for trying to set ablaze publisher’s house in London

London, July 8 (ANI): Three Islamic fundamentalists have been jailed for an arson attack on the home of a London-based publisher who planned to publish a novel about the Prophet Muhammad and his child bride.

Fundamentalists doused the door of Martin Rynja’s home with diesel and set ablaze after discovering that he intended to publish Sherry Jones’s novel The Jewel of Medina, an “offensive” book about the prophet, The Times reports.

The attack on the home of Rynja has been compared to the campaign against the publication of Salmon Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses.

The arson was led by Ali Beheshti, who was photographed three years ago at a London protest with his baby daughter dressed in a pink bonnet bearing the slogan “I love al-Qaeda”.

Undercover police followed Beheshti and the other attackers for several weeks and saw them monitoring the publisher and trying to avoid detection by changing their clothes.

Beheshti, 41, and Abrar Mirza, 23, admitted conspiracy to commit arson, being reckless as to whether life was endangered. Abbas Taj, 30, was convicted of the same offence at Croydon Crown Court in May.

Justice Rafferty, sitting at the Royal Courts of Justice, sentenced each of them to four and a half years in jail, saying: “If you choose to live in this country, you live by its rules.”

The judge described Rynja as “a principled” man who had “exercised critical judgment on a literary work and stood up to be counted, knowing that publishing it put him at risk”.

Rynja’s publishing company, Gibson Square Books, bought the rights to the novel after Random House dropped plans to publish it, fearing “acts of violence”.

Jones, an American author, had insisted that her book was respectful towards Islam and Rynja said he felt that its publication was part of a liberal democracy.

Andrew Hall, QC, said in mitigation for Beheshti that the arson attack was “an act of protest born of the publication of a book felt by him and other Muslims to be disrespectful, provocative and offensive.

“He wishes me to say now, publicly, that he considers his conduct to have been misguided, disproportionate and counter-productive,” he added. (ANI)

Katie Holmes’ ‘film crew inks contract not to quiz her on Scientology’

Melbourne, July 05 (ANI): If sources are to be believed, the crew working in Katie Holmes’ new film ‘Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark’, have signed agreements stating that they would not ask the actress about her religion, Scientology.

The actress has never confirmed converting to Scientology, which is banned in France and Germany since she started dating Tom Cruise in early 2005.

‘Royal protection officers played poker, traded porn in Buckingham Palace’

London, Jun 30 (ANI): A former royal protection officer, who has been accused of being involved in a 3-million-pound betting and property scam, has laid claims that his colleagues played poker and traded pornography while working at Buckingham Palace.

Paul Page, 38, of Granville Road, Chafford Hundred, Grays, Essex, is said to have allegedly cheated colleagues and others out of their life savings.

Page, who describes his job as an “easy life”, denies fraudulent trading, intimidation and threatening to take revenge on a victim who spoke to police between January 1 2003 and March 30 2007.

His wife Laura, 42, was acquitted on June 26 of charges she originally faced in connection with the case.

During his opening defence at Southwark Crown Court today, Page, a father-of-five, revealed that officers in the royal protection command could earn 50,000-60,000 pounds a year with overtime “for doing very little”.

Shifts involved two hours on post, followed by at least an hour off post.

“You didn’t work for a living. That is the bottom line,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“You have got time to study… There was one officer and he did sell porn. He used to get it from Holland, bring it back and sell it to officers while on duty.

“Everyone knew about it but no one would say anything. Officers were running poker games for money in down time. If people want to do that that is fair enough but senior officers let it go,” he said.

Page also revealed that members of the royal household instilled a class culture and royal protection officers were treated as a “necessary evil” who were expected to turn a blind eye to crime at the palace.

“You are not police officers any more. For example instances of domestic abuse in the royal household where the servants live and sleep in the palace,” he said.

“Some have drink problems and fight. You are told not to get involved. There is a class culture within the palace.

“You are treated like dirt – that includes police officers on the gate.

“Some (members of the royal household) are very nice but the majority, they treat you like you are on a lower level,” he revealed.

He added that he believed money was “thrown at you” because the security level had to be kept up.

“I shouldn’t be saying what I am saying but it has to be done – I need you to understand the culture,” Page added at the court hearing. (ANI)
