Drake NY concert cancelled after security concerns

NEW YORK (Billboard) – A second free Drake concert in New York has been canceled after security concerns were raised by the city’s police department.

The Toronto rapper, whose debut album recently opened at No. 1 on the U.S. pop chart, was in talks to perform in Central Park on July 16 as part of ABC’s “Good Morning America” summer concert series. According to the Daily News, the plans were scrapped after the NYPD told the city’s Parks Department to bolster its security efforts.

A spokesperson for ABC told the newspaper, “We were interested in having Drake perform, but he was never officially booked,” while a rep said that there was a “booking in place.” The cast of Green Day’s Broadway musical “American Idiot” will play “Good Morning America” on July 16 instead.

Drake’s first free New York show was scheduled to take place at South Street Seaport on June 15, the same day his album “Thank Me Later” was released. The event was shut down at the last minute, however, after an estimated crowd of 10,000 swelled to 25,000.

Serbs rue vuvuzelas, “stupid” penalty and ball

(Reuters) – Serbia players could not hear their fans over the incessant din of vuvuzelas, had trouble controlling the World Cup ball and lost their concentration to give away a ‘stupid’ penalty and lose 1-0 to Ghana.

Sports

That was the verdict of the dejected-looking players as they traipsed past reporters, having to keep answering questions about why Sunday’s Group D opener had gone wrong for them.

Their coach Radomir Antic had a different gripe, saying Aleksandar Lukovic’s dismissal for a second yellow in the 74th minute had been too harsh and had turned the game.

Nine minutes after that setback, substitute Zdravko Kuzmanovic’s raised arm struck a ball hit across the area to give away the penalty that put Ghana ahead and triggered wild celebrations from the already noisy African crowd.

“I think that it is not easy to control the ball in the air,” defender Nemanja Vidic told reporters when asked if the ball had contributed to the penalty because it looked as if Kuzmanovic had thought it would fly over him.

Many players have criticized the ball, branding it a “beachball,” “inadequate” and like one purchased in a supermarket among other complaints.

“It’s very quick, more in the air than at the feet. I think if the ball hits the ground you get good control. But all the teams have problems with the ball so it is not an excuse,” added Vidic.

Apart from the ball, players are also having to get used to the noisy vuvuzelas, which do not stop during a match and create a constant racket unlike anything heard at matches on other continents.

“Because of the vuvzelas we couldn’t hear the Serbian fans,” forward Marko Pantelic told reporters.

“Our fans were cheering but the only noise was the vuvuzelas.”

Defender Bransilav Ivanovic said they had lost concentration to give away the penalty, which Danko Lazovic said was “stupid,” while Serbia were knocked off their stride by Lukovic’s sending off before that.

“The sending off of Lukovic was too harsh and it turned the match their way,” Antic told a news conference.

“In a tight match like this a simple error by Kuzmanovic made the difference but I have no complaints about my team’s effort.”

SecuraTrac Allows Parents To Finally Relax On Vacation

SecuraPAL (Personal Automated Locator) Alleviates Fears of Losing Children at
Crowded Parks and Attractions
HERMOSA BEACH, Calif.–(Business Wire)–
For children, the anticipated months of summer vacation are nearly here which
means trips to zoos, amusement and water parks, beaches and other fun-filled yet
crowded attractions will soon fill many families schedules. While children
embrace carefree days, the summer months are a nervous time for parents worried
about their children`s safety and whereabouts.

All parents hope to avoid the sinking feeling of turning around and not
immediately being able to locate their child in a crowd. Whether you are
planning a family road-trip to the coast for a few days of sand and sun at a
popular beach destination or staying closer to home and preparing to visit a
local museum or roller coaster and water park, parents can now rent a new device
from SecuraTrac to ensure their peace-of-mind during family outings.

At www.securatrac.com parents can arrange to rent a small, GPS tracking device
called a SecuraPAL for each of their children. The SecuraPAL is a small Personal
Automated Locator that can be placed in a child`s pocket or attached to a belt
that parents can use to locate their children should they go missing in a crowd.
The SecuraPAL also has an SOS feature where children can push a button to send a
text and/or email alert to their parent should they feel endangered at any time.
When the SOS button is pushed the parent receives a message in about 10 seconds
with the child`s exact location and directions on how to get there.

Additionally, parents can have SecuraTrac customize their rented SecuraPAL for
their particular destination or trip where SecuraTrac will setup each SecuraPAL
with pre-set SecuraFences, a virtual boundary, to further enhance a child`s
safety and parents` ability to relax on vacation. Parents can choose to have
SecuraFences established around their hotel, an amusement park, museum or any
other destination. If a child enters or leaves this virtual boundary or
SecuraFence, an alert would be sent via text or email to notify the parent.

Parents can also rent a SecuraPAL for international travel with their children.
Visiting a foreign country where you do not speak the language can be stressful
enough, let alone having to worry about keeping your eye on wandering children
while also taking in the sights. With a SecuraPAL parents can spend more time
enjoying their vacation and have more opportunities to experience the culture of
a foreign country. SecuraTrac does not charge additional fees for use of the
SecuraPAL device outside of the U.S. for trips under 10 days.

‘Next season, we want nothing short of a league victory’

Right from its inception in 2007, Pune FC has taken giant steps towards success at the national level. After qualifying for the I-league in its very first attempt, the club is set to finish in the top three in its debut season. Following are excerpts from an interview with coach Derrick Pereira.

How big is the success of Pune FC?* The success is humungous. The reaction of the crowd after the last home match against Churchill Brothers told the whole story. The atmosphere was such that we felt we had won the Champions League final! The atmosphere was lively as the matches were played at night. It was unlike anything I have ever seen around here and will only increase.

What were your expectations before the tournament? Did you exceed them? * My expectations kept on increasing as the tournament progressed. At the start, I would have been happy with a mid-table finish. At the halfway stage, I knew we had it in us to finish in the top-five. If we had pushed a little harder towards the end we could have even fought for the title.

What has been the key to your successful season? * The key to our success has been the fact that we drew more games than we lost. We kept collecting points wherever we went and our first winning streak helped us reach the top. Other than that, the credit must go to the professionalism of the administration.

How did you motivate the team during the frustrating parts of the season, especially at the start where the team drew six of their first eight games and losing the other two? * Even though the results were not going our way, we were putting in good performances. I just kept on telling the team to keep up the good work and the results would follow. The break was very important for us. We analyzed our mistakes, worked on them and came out a better team in the second half. Since we didn’t have Jeje Lalpekhlua for most of the season, we worked on a strategy to make Edmar play up front on his own. It was just a matter of one win to get our confidence back.

What has been your strategy throughout the season? * We first focus on our strengths and play to our strengths. We then analyze the weakness of the opposition and look to exploit it.

What was the turning point of the season? * The turning point of the season was our Federation Cup victory against Dempo. We had started the season poorly and were in a lowly ninth place. But that victory gave us the much needed confidence and self belief to beat any I-league side. We went from strength to strength from that point on.

What are the plans ahead? * We will first be looking to beat Dempo on Thursday to secure the second place. But for the next season we will want nothing short of a league victory.

Stressed Nadal unhappy with winning start

Rafael Nadal’s 6-2 6-2 6-2 win over French teenager Gianni Mina looked as stress-free as it gets for the four-times Roland Garros champion but the Spaniard was far from happy on Tuesday.

“I played poorly because I made a lot of unforced errors,” said Nadal, back to reclaim his crown after last year’s shock fourth-round defeat by Robin Soderling.

“The ball was not doing what I wanted to do. I didn’t play well. That’s the truth. That’s why I couldn’t play my game as usual. I did things in such a way that I couldn’t play well compared with what I usually do.

“I’m a bit nervous or stressed. It’s the first round. The first round is always difficult in this tournament. But I have to re-focus and calm down and move forward,” he told reporters.

Nadal’s French Open build-up was perfection with 15 consecutive wins on clay in Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid and despite being seeded behind defending champion Roger Federer he is most people’s favourite to reclaim the title.

INJURY PROBLEMS

The Mallorcan, who endured injury problems and poor form in 2009 after suffering his first defeat at Roland Garros a year ago, was at pains to play down those expectations as he continues to try and recover his best form.

“Right now it’s very difficult to speak about the favourites,” he said. “Sure I am one of the players that if I play my best tennis I’m gonna have chances but a lot of players think the same than me.”

Nadal had plenty in reserve against 18-year-old wildcard Mina who was far from overawed by playing one of the greatest claycourters the game has seen in the first round.

The runner-up in last year’s junior singles delighted the crowd on a muggy Court Suzanne Lenglen with bold shot-making, occasionally wrong-footing his opponent with flashing winners.

He never really threatened to extend the contest, however, and bowed out with a forehand over the baseline as Nadal took his Roland Garros record to 32-1 and set up a second-round match against Argentine Horacio Zeballos.

“I had some nice exchanges and very nice shots,” Mina told reporters. “I don’t know if it was his best match but he had to fight back. I was probably a pain for him.”

White House party crashers now barge onto David Letterman”s stage

New York, May 26 (ANI): Gatecrashing seems to have become a habit with Tareq and Michaele Salahi – the couple are now making news for barging on stage during the “Late Show with David Letterman.”

Letterman was joking through his monologue when the smiling Salahis suddenly walked out, flanked him, posed for “photographers,” then left as quickly as they had appeared on the stage.

“See, it”s interesting to me… For all practical purposes, they”re trespassing. But the crowd goes wild!” the New York Daily News quoted Letterman as saying on the show.

The Salahis gained notoriety when uninvited they attended the White House State Dinner last November. (ANI)

Soderling makes hay while sun shines in Paris

Robin Soderling sauntered into round two of the French Open on Sunday with the minimum of effort after a 6-0 6-2 6-3 victory over French wildcard Laurent Recouderc.

Soderling, the man who stunned the tennis world 12 months ago by inflicting Rafa Nadal’s only defeat at Roland Garros, stormed through the first nine games and a rare whitewash looked on the cards.

But Recouderc, encouraged by a sun-baked crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier, finally broke his duck in game 10 and mockingly egged on the crowd with a punch in the air.

But Soderling, the fifth seed, unleashed his brutal forehand time and again to ease through in just an hour and 34 minutes to book a place in round two against either American Taylor Dent or Ecuador’s Nicolas Lapentti.

“Cheryl’s mum is behind our friendship.

“I think anybody that will look after her little girl and protect her – after the last few months she has had – is only a good thing in her mum’s eyes.

Twenty20 as serious as Test cricket, asserts Clarke

Sydney, April 29 (IANS) Australia’s Twenty20 captain Michael Clarke Thursday called Twenty20 as important as Test cricket and has asked Cricket Australia (CA) to include Twenty20 specialists like batsmen David Warner and David Hussey in their contract system.

‘It’s the same – it’s exactly the same,’ Clarke was quoted as saying in Daily Telegraph as Australia prepares for the World Twenty20, beginning Friday, in the Caribbean.

‘For me, it’s as serious as a one-day match or a Test match.’

‘There are blokes in this squad who haven’t played Test cricket. They haven’t played one-day cricket. It’s the ultimate for them.’

‘It’s become exactly the same as one-day and Test cricket. It’s a form of the game that we want to be the best in the world at. We’re not there yet, we’re improving, but this is a way for us to start.’

Clarke’s remarks are not likely to go well with the purists but he believes it has a growing relevance among the players.

‘There’s no such thing as a game of hit and giggle,’ he said. ‘That’s something that has changed. It used to be about putting on a show, entertaining the crowd.’

‘But from a player point of view, that is no longer the case.’

Clarke revealed he had approached CA executives about changing its contract.

‘I’ve told Cricket Australia that they should have contracts,’ he said. ‘I think there should be a Twenty20 contract introduced.’

‘I know once you play a certain number of Twenty20 games, you can get upgraded to a Cricket Australia contract.’

‘But players like David Warner and David Hussey … they’re here playing in a Twenty20 World Cup. They should be paid (under contract) for that.’

Twenty20 seriousness on par with one-day cricket, Tests: Clarke

St. Lucia, Apr 29(ANI): Australian skipper Michael Clarke has made an astonishing claim that Twenty20 cricket has the same status as one-day and Test cricket.

“It’s the same – it’s exactly the same. For me, it’s as serious as a one-day match or a Test match. There are blokes in this squad who haven’t played Test cricket. They haven’t played one-day cricket. It’s the ultimate for them,” the Fox News quoted Clarke, as saying.

“It’s become exactly the same as one-day and Test cricket. It’s a form of the game that we want to be the best in the world at. We’re not there yet, we’re improving, but this is a way for us to start,” he added.

The 29-year-old further said that from a player’s point of view the shortest version of the game is no more a marketing vehicle to swell audiences and attract new fans.

“There’s no such thing as a game of hit and giggle. That’s something that has changed. It used to be about putting on a show, entertaining the crowd. But from a player point of view, that is no longer the case,” Clarke said.

Clarke also revealed that he has approached the Cricket Australia (CA) management over altering its contract system to include Twenty20 specialists.

“I’ve told Cricket Australia that they should have contracts. I think there should be a Twenty20 contract introduced. I know once you play a certain number of Twenty20 games you can get upgraded to a Cricket Australia contract,” he said. (ANI)
