Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s dream merchant

WINDSOR PARK ( Dominica): An officer in charge of one of Dominica’s many forest reserves comes across as someone who wouldn’t have seen much life outside the dense tropical forests here.

Soiled shorts, rugged shoes and a double barrel shotgun is all he has as he moves around in the jungles that make for the island’s most cherished treasures. Alan Woodwick even has to hunt or fish by himself to survive and has nothing less than a Boa Constrictor for a pet.

Just when you’re about to conclude that this man may not know much beyond life in the wild, he greets you with a name that he’s as familiar with as you are, and as knowledgeable, perhaps, as one can be.

“How is Dhoni?” Woodwick asks. “Say hello to him. He’s my favourite cricketer,” he says.

Woodwick likes what he’s heard about Mahendra Singh Dhoni, mostly on the radio here because there’s not much of reading for Woodwick to do. The skipper (Dhoni) “recently got married”, his wife “proved lucky for him”, he won the World Cup and he comes from a “small town”, says Woodwick of India’s most successful captain ever.

Long after you’ve left Woodwick behind and trundled out of the forest, his description of MS Dhoni gets you thinking. Why Dhoni? You begin to wonder. Why not Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly or Sunil Gavaskar?

Unlike Tendulkar, Dhoni can’t play with a straight bat. Unlike Dravid, he doesn’t have the technical efficiency of a proven Test batsman. Unlike Ganguly, Dhoni’s not elegant. Unlike Gavaskar, he has not left a mark in the Caribbean islands either. But Woodwick, surprisingly, doesn’t name them in his list of favourites.

Dhoni doesn’t even make batting look good. How can a cricketer — who doesn’t move his feet at all, brings his bat down from the southwest and swings it to southeast for the ball to travel in some other direction altogether and is famous for a Helicopter Shot — be someone’s favourite?

But Dhoni is, and he defies all logic.

Woodwick’s cricketing hero makes you relate to the common man’s idea of following an idol. The forest officer is no great cricket buff himself and, therefore, he doesn’t really enjoy the subtle nuances of the game. He sees Dhoni as a successful captain who came from nowhere, with no exceptional talent, but led a bunch of world class cricketers to World Cup victory and world’s No. 1 Test status.

Dhoni gives the less-confident, average, small-town enthusiasts a lot to dream.

You have to be a born genius to become a Tendulkar or a Gavaskar; come from a big city like Kolkata to be a Ganguly and for fans to adore you. But not Dhoni… From Woodwick, you come to the conclusion how common men like to see their heroes in the same skin.

The same evening, after meeting with Woodwick, one arrives at the Indian team’s training session in Dominica’s Windsor Park stadium where Dhoni is busy talking to coach Duncan Fletcher. The two of them are busy animatedly discussing a cricketing shot — something that resembles an off-side drive. You’re quickly reminded of his last two dismissals in the Barbados Test, both times caught while trying to awkwardly drive and twice to the same bowler and fielder.

The Indian skipper has managed just 23 runs in four innings in this series and has been left thoroughly exposed for lack of technique.

How can Woodwick pick Dhoni for a favourite?

Dhoni’s got other pressures to handle too. If his team doesn’t complete its quota of overs in stipulated time in this Test, he’ll find himself banned from the game at Lord’s.

Despite his frailties, Dhoni is successful — a cricketer who fights many of his own little battles in between leading India into many significant wars. Dhoni’s gracious to admit that he is what he is “because of a great team”. The shorter formats are less demanding but when it comes to Tests, he’s lacking.

Unlike Tendulkar, he’s not blessed and unlike Dravid, he’s not troubling the West Indies here with the bat either. He makes up a bit for this lack of talent by way of some audacious leadership qualities.

‘Spoiler’ Malik vowed to transform into ‘team man’ to make it to national squad: Afridi

Karachi, Jun.4 (ANI): Shoaib Malik’s inclusion in the 15-man squad for the Asia Cup just days after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) lifted the one-year ban imposed on him may have surprised many, but he was able to make it to the national squad only after he swore before skipper Shahid Afridi that he would completely transform himself into a ‘team man.’

Rejecting media reports that Malik was included in the squad under pressure from various political and other influential quarters, Afridi said Malik was a talented cricketer whom the team needed.

“I don’t take any pressure from anyone. The thing is that Shoaib Malik is a talented cricketer and there is no doubt about it. The team needs him. But I’ve told him clearly that I’m supporting you and I need your support for the sake of the team,” The News quoted Afridi, as saying.

The swashbuckling all rounder also revealed that he had a ‘heart-to-heart’ with Malik before the meeting with the national selectors and PCB chairman Ijaz Butt to pick the team for the Asia Cup.

“Malik has assured me of his complete support. He sounded really serious about making a successful international return and wants to help me in my efforts to put the team back on track,” Afridi said.

“I have no personal grudges against anybody including Malik. The thing is that I just want players who can contribute towards the team cause. I want to raise our performance graph and that can only happen through a team effort,” he added.

Afridi also rubbished reports regarding pacer Shoaib Akhtar failing a fitness test conducted just a day before the team was to be announced.

“Who said he (Akhtar) failed the fitness test? We have received reports from experts that he is fully fit after which we have decided to recall him,” he said.

Afridi, 30, backed the selectors’ decision to include Akhtar in the Sri Lanka bound 15-man squad, saying the speedster would add more firepower to Pakistan’s bowling line up.

“It’s true that Shoaib has been out of action for some time, but I’m sure that he still has a lot of cricket left in him. We can field him in our big matches which means he will get enough time to recover and maintain his form and fitness. I’m happy that he is back,” said Afridi. (ANI)

Out in the cold, Irfan vows to come back

It took one Australian tour in 2003-04 to make a curly-haired teenager a household name. Once he began swinging the ball both ways, comparisons with Wasim Akram followed. A few impressive knocks later, he was destined to be the next Kapil Dev. The fall for Irfan Pathan though, has been as quick as his climb was.

Having lost his swing and a considerable amount of pace, Pathan is no longer the blue-eyed boy of the selection committee. Despite scoring 397 runs at an average of 49.62 and scalping 22 wickets in the 2009-10 Ranji season, followed by a five-wicket haul in the Duleep Trophy final, Pathan didn’t make the cut for the Zimbabwean tour or the India A side — touring England — as a pool of fresh faces was preferred by the selectors.

Working on errors

The disappointment is clear, but Pathan does his best to conceal it. “I really don’t know what to say. I was hopeful. Every cricketer thinks of where he is going wrong and tries to work on his errors. I’m playing well but need to do better. I’m still hoping to make a comeback,” Pathan says, while speaking to The Indian Express.

While cricket pundits attempt to deconstruct where the downfall began, Pathan isn’t sure himself. Could it have been because of the drop in pace? “But I have never been a 140-plus bowler,” he says.

“I don’t know what people are expecting from me. Do they want to see me to bowl at 140-plus and take no wickets? Or do they want to see me swing my way to wickets and give away fewer runs?” he asks, adding, “I was a bowler who could take wickets and perform whenever the team required.”

The long season has finally come to an end after the IPL, and Pathan has planned his next three months in advance.

“At the moment I’m working on my body, hitting the gym. These three months will be crucial as I will work on my pace. It all depends on how I maintain my body,” he says.

The 25-year-old has more plans in place but is reluctant to reveal them, though he is tugging at the leash to return into the senior side as it’s been a year since he was last part of the Indian team. Pathan is aware of his statistics this season, and rattles them off like a student giving his oral exams.

“It all depends on how my next season goes, I’m ready to do well again. Ready for more hard work, ready to learn everyday, ready to come back.”

Kahlon-Chitkara tiff reaches cricket ground

The ongoing tussle between RTI activist Sarbjeet Singh Kahlon and Ludhiana Cricket Association general secretary Vinod Chitkara spilled over to the cricket ground at PAU on Sunday, after Kahlon allegedly abused two players on the ground.

Kahlon and Chitkara have been at war over the issue of election of players for the under-15 team. Kahlon’s son, too, is a cricketer and was not selected for the team, which according to him, was done to accommodate Chitkara’s son. Kahlon even showed some documents to prove that Chitkara’s son was over-aged and did not qualify for the team and that he was using his position to get his son selected.

The police had to be called in to control the situation. The ruckus broke out when Chandigarh was playing Ludhiana in a domestic cricket match. It has been learnt that Kahlon abused players Rahul Singla and Varun Chitkara, who lodged a complaint with the umpire, who took up the matter with game referee Jasvir Singh. Singh, meanwhile, said, “The police are looking into the matter. We will also report the issue to the Punjab Cricket Association.”

Kahlon rubbished the entire issue and said, “The matter is quite the contrary. I reached the ground around 11.30 in the morning. Ajay Singla and his son Varun approached me and started abusing me. I called in the PCA and seeing the police, they backed off. The moment the police returned, these two again began abusing and manhandling me. I went to the police station and recorded my statement . These two never even reached the police station.”

He said, “Like Vinod’s son, Ajay Singla”s son, too, was found over-aged for the under-19 team last year. Chitkara is already facing an FIR filed by me. Moreover, had I abused the boys, why no one else heard the abuses? The umpire or the referee did not hear anything. This shows the complaint is completely false.”

Cairns mulls suit against Modi for match fixing slur

Wellington, May 23 (IANS) Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns says he has taken the legal course against suspended Indian Premier Legal Commissioner Lalit Modi over allegations of match fixing.

Cairns was not allowed to participate in the IPL auction after he quit the rebel Indian Cricket League, with Modi claiming that the cricketer was involved in match-fixing during his ICL days.

‘I’m currently an interested bystander,’ Cairns was quoted as saying in the New Zealand Herald Sunday.

‘We are still trying to have Modi served with papers. We’re going through that process in India but it takes time to get through the court system. We’re waiting for him, though.’

‘If he decides to go to the UK, we’ll have him served there but it is so difficult to know his movements – especially with all the turmoil he’s embroiled in. It’s frustrating but we’ve initiated the process and just have to wait,’ Cairns said.

The irony is that Modi, the founder of the IPL empire estimated, is fighting allegations of financial irregularities.

‘We will continue to pursue justice but at the moment he’s also going through a process which needs to reach its conclusion before any judgement is passed.’

‘We need to go through the proper channels to find out what to do next. I’m as interested as anybody to see how this pans out,’ said Cairns.

He said that he lost a vital opportunity to play for IPL.

‘The opportunity is gone now. I’m finished. There was that one window of opportunity in the IPL when I was asked to put my name forward but I’m 40 in three weeks (June 13) so reality dictates, even though a return was a romantic notion.’

Afridi wants quick and ‘decisive’ action in match fixing controversy

Karachi, May 21 (ANI): Pakistan T20 skipper Shahid Afridi believes that the uncertainty surrounding players’ involvement in match fixing during the winless Australia tour is adversely effecting the team’s focus, and has asked the concerned authorities to take ‘decisive action’ over the issue soon.

Afridi said the controversy is damaging for players keeping in view that they have to compete in some important tournaments in the coming months, including the 2011 World Cup.

“The thing is that there is too much uncertainty because of all those allegations regarding match-fixing. It’s really damaging for the players and the team and I’m really concerned because it comes at a time when we are looking forward to a very busy calendar filled with major assignments, including the all-important World Cup,” The News quoted Afridi, as saying.

“We will be playing in the World Cup just nine months from now and it’s hardly the sort of situation you need to prepare for such a huge event,” he added.

The suspicion of match fixing involving some of the key players, particularly wicket keeper Kamran Akmal spiralled after a video tape was leaked to the media, which showed players and some of the former team officials raising questions over the performance of the team during the disastrous Australia tour while testifying before an inquiry committee set up by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The leaked footage also showed Afridi raising suspicions of match fixing.

Afridi, however, refused to make any statement about the video, and urged the concerned authorities to resolve the issue as soon as possible so that players could concentrate on the game more.

“I think that for our team to move on, we need to quickly resolve all such controversies. You can’t expect the players to give their best when there are so many allegations thrown at them,” the flamboyant cricketer said. (ANI)

Yuvraj’s form a window for Dravid?

India’s disastrous run in the World T20 in the Caribbean and Yuvraj Singh’s indifferent form might have opened a window of hope for Rahul Dravid’s inclusion back in the limited overs side, according to sources. Some of the selectors are seriously mulling over bringing the former India skipper back to the ODI fold with an eye on next year’s World Cup, according to a source in the BCCI. “Yuvraj Singh looked out of sorts in the Caribbean,” a selector told The Sunday Express on conditions of anonymity. “He is a talented cricketer but he is not doing justice to his talent — maybe he needs to return to the drawing board.”

According to the selector, the left-hander could get the axe for next month’s Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, and that might open up a slot in the middle order. “Asia Cup is going to be the litmus test for the team,” he said, “and after the Caribbean debacle, the young players will be under pressure. So experience is needed to calm the nerves, and also help (skipper) Mahendra Singh Dhoni in decision-making.”

Dravid, according to the selector, is “still in our scheme of things as far as ODIs are concerned. I should say he has a fifty-fifty chance of returning to the team for Asia Cup.” Incidentally, Dravid was brought back to the ODI squad after last year’s World T20 but was dumped after just two series despite a couple of good knocks in the Champions Trophy.

`Unbelievable’ Hussey’s performance to put Australia in T20 final ` freakish’: Clarke

St. Lucia (West Indies), May 15 (ANI): Australian skipper Michael Clarke on Friday described `Mr. Cricket’ Michael Hussey’s match-winning 24-ball 60 runs to put his side into the finals of the World Twenty20 championship as “unbelievable and freakish”.

Speaking to reporters after Australia miraculously trounced Pakistan by three wickets in a humdinger of semi-final here, chasing down 191, the Sydney Morning Herald quoted a delighted Clarke, as saying: “Today is a freakish performance from an unbelievable cricketer in any form of the game. His (Huss) attitude, he just never gave up.”

“Losing three wickets in the first (7.2) overs, it was always going to be a tough chase for us,” Clarke said at St Lucia”s Beausejour Stadium.

“But with the batting we have in the team, how far down in the order we go, you just can”t write us off. We”ll take a lot of confidence going into Barbados. The conditions will suit us more than St Lucia has, with a bit more pace and bounce for both our batters and our bowlers,” he added.

“Our mindset through this whole tournament has been exactly what Huss showed today. We”re never beaten,” he said.

Hussey compared the win to Australia”s victory in the Adelaide Test against England in 2006-07.

“When we won the Ashes Test in Adelaide and I hit the winning runs, I thought that was the best feeling,” he said.

“This one”s definitely up there, maybe even … if not better. It”s the best feeling you can ever have, to hit the winning runs for your country, particularly in such a big game as a semi-final,” he said.

Needing 18 to win from the final over bowled by spinner Saeed Ajmal, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson took a signal of the first ball, and then Hussey fired 6-6-4-6 to post a career-best 60 not out from 24 balls and put his side into the final.

In all, he hit three fours and six sixes and was mobbed by team-mates as Australia finished on 7-197 after Pakistan had appeared set for an upset win, scoring 6-191 against Australia”s highly rated pace attack.

After the win, Clarke said Kevin Pietersen would be the key wicket to nab when Australia take on England in the final.

“He”ll be a big part of the final. If we can get him out early it will hold us in good stead,” Clarke said.

“We”ve just come off one of the best wins of my career so we”re pretty confident. I love playing against England. It”s a great build-up to what”s going to be an amazing summer in Australia. Any opportunity you get to beat England, you look forward to,” he said.

Pakistan coach Waqar said: “When you have such momentum with you, it”s always handy. They (Australia) played like champions,” he said. (ANI)

Imran blasts PPP govt for taking dictation from US

Islamabad, May 8 (ANI): Taking on the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government, cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan has criticised the country’s leadership for taking dictation from the United States.

Addressing a public rally in Pabbi, Imran said the Gilani government has failed completely in addressing the issues facing the country.

“The rulers are taking dictation from the US and are unable to pursue people-friendly policies,” Imran said.

“The present government has surpassed the former ruler General Pervez Musharraf in appeasing the US,” he added.

Commenting on the failed Times Square bombing plot, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief said it was an attempt by the US to malign Pakistan’s image.

“Faisal Shahzad has nothing to do with Pakistan as he is a US citizen and got education there. The US was using the failed bombing plot by Faisal to malign Pakistan,” The News quoted Imran, as saying. (ANI)

Coach Flower, skipper Colly say Morgan key to winning 20-20 World Cup

London, Apr.24 (ANI): Left-hand Irish batsman Eoin Morgan has said that he will never stop playing his amazing cocktail of unorthodox hits, dabs and deflections, and that is the reason why head coach Andy Flower believes England can win this year’s Twenty20 World Cricket Cup in the Caribbean.

“People talk about a new brand of batting, but really it”s knowing your strengths, the reverse sweep and some other shots are part of my game. I think it goes back to when I first played for Middlesex in one-day cricket,” The Sun quotes Morgan, as saying.

“I was about 18 and couldn”t seem to clear the boundary. I started practising some new strokes and I found it came quite naturally,” he adds.

Morgan also has skipper Paul Collingwood’s vote of confidence.

Collingwood said: “Eoin”s rise in the past year has been exceptional and he can do things with a cricket bat that are amazing.”

Flower is so excited by England”s batting power he thinks they can win their first global tournament after 35 years of trying.

Flower said: “Winning the tournament is our target – it”s as simple as that. We have a more aggressive batting line- up than in any competition in the past. We could really hurt the opposition.

“Morgan is an extraordinary cricketer in many ways – he”s not a big bloke but he hits the ball incredibly hard and times it beautifully. He can play a variety of roles. He can be the man who hits it out of the ground, but he”s also played a couple of innings for us where he”s knocked the ball around solidly in the middle-order. He can adapt to situations very well.” (ANI)

Sania-Shoaib marriage spurred ‘marriage diplomacy’: Pak Minister

Lahore, Apr.22 (ANI): The controversial, yet news headline dominating wedding of Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik has given way to ‘marriage diplomacy’ between the two estranged neighbouring countries, Pakistan’s Population Welfare Firdous Ashiq Awan has said.

Talking to reporters at the Lahore airport, Awan said the hullabaloo surrounding the star sports couple wedding helped in establishing state level contacts between both countries, The News reports.

Awan, who visited India to attend the reception of Sania and Shoaib, said during her stay she held talks with several Indian officials over improvement of ties between Islamabad and New Delhi.

She said that Congress Party chairwomen Sonia Gandhi, as a noble gesture, has sent a bouquet for Pakistanis.

Earlier, before leaving for Pakistan, Awan had said that Sania and Shoaib would be the brand ambassador of goodwill, population and family planning and health issue not just of Pakistan but of India as well.

“We are branding Sania and Shoaib together for India and Pakistan. They are the ambassadors of goodwill gesture of both India and Pakistan, it’s not only Pakistan,” Awan had said.

The minister also said that composite dialogue between the two neighbours should resume as soon as possible.

“This (dialogue) should resume as soon as possible. These are our desires. Let’s see how the Indian government, they implement those desires,” added Awan. (ANI)

Symonds to debut for Surrey in June

Sydney, Apr 19 (ANI): All rounder Andrew Symonds has said that he is looking forward to joining the English county side Surrey to play Twenty20 and leaving Australia behind.

The troubled all-rounder, who lost his Cricket Australia contract following several alcohol-related indiscretions, is due to make his Surrey debut against Gloucestershire at the Brit Oval on June 8.

“It is fair to say that I had a tough couple of years trying to find a place in what was a changing environment (in Australia”s international teams) and I am much happier away from that scene,” he told the Sunday Mirror.

“I will always believe in playing my cricket hard but also believe in leaving it on the field. I have been described as all sorts of things by different people, it’s amazing how well people think they know you. My friends and family give me all the important feedback I need.”

Symonds added that he believed he had “mellowed in some respects”. I have learned you can win games of cricket without hitting every ball for six,” he said.

“I do enjoy Twenty20 though – if it’s there to hit, it just has to go! I have always been an aggressive cricketer, I grew up watching Viv Richards and admired the way he went about it,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying.

“I think all forms of the game have become more athletic and more aggressive. I always had a short attention span as well so as the game gets shorter it just seems to suit me better,” Symonds added. (ANI)
