Body double does most of Alec Baldwin’s role in 30 Rock

Washington, September 12 (ANI): Actor Alec Baldwin has a body double for his role in hit TV Show 30 Rock, as he can’t spare enough time to film it himself, it has emerged.

The star apparently works just three days a week, as he needs to travel back to Los Angeles to spend time with his daughter Ireland.

According to sources it has led to the comedy show creator and star, Tina Fey, organizing rehearsals and scenes around Baldwin’s absence, by using a stand-in.

“Tina saves Alec’s speaking lines for his arrival on set, but everything else is shot with a stand-in,” Fox News quoted an on-set source as saying.

Most shots featuring Baldwin’s character are shot from behind or sideways.

The insider said: “Those [body double takes] make it into the final cut of the show. There are many back shots and side shots that don’t show Alec’s face, because it is his stand-in on Alec’s days off.

“The goal is to have everything ready to shoot Alec when he’s there, with as little stress as possible.

“He does not have the desire to be tied to a set six or seven days a week, and Tina was willing to work it so that he could get everything he wanted. Alec can pretty much do anything he wants at ’30 Rock’.”

Baldwin was spotted at the U.S. Open this week watching tennis. (ANI)

Soon, MJ’s ‘Thriller’ doll

London, Sept 8 (ANI): Michael Jackson has come alive in a new avatar – a lifelike doll.

The doll is inspired by the King of Pop’s 1983 Thriller music video, which showed him turning into a zombie.

The Hong Kong-based Hot Toys is the creator of the doll, which emphasizes most aspects of the late pop legend’s personality, even his trademark white socks, reports the Daily Star.uyers also have the option to exchange the doll’s head and clothes for the sinister, hollowed-eyed undead look.

The toy has 32 movable points, which enable it to reproduce MJ’s dance steps.

The doll will be available to MJ’s fans in Hong Kong and Japan only, where it will be released later this year. (ANI)

‘Milk’ creator turning ‘The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test’ into movie

New York, Apr 19 (ANI): Tom Wolfe’s 1968 classic “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test” is being turned into a film.

The movie version of the book, which chronicles writer Ken Kesey’s LSD-dropping band of hippies known as the Merry Pranksters, is being done by American film director Gus Van Sant, reports The New York Post.

Rolling Stone reports that Van Sant, the Oscar-nominated director of “Milk,” originally pictured Heath Ledger in the role of Kesey.

However, he’s now eyeing Jack Black and Woody Harrelson.

Van Sant is also helming the book’s adaptation with Oscar-winning “Milk” scripter Dustin Lance Black. (ANI)

‘Axed’ Nicollette Sheridan says Desperate Housewives became boring

Washington, Apr 15 (ANI): Actress Nicollette Sheridan admits she’s not upset with her departure from ‘Desperate Housewives’, insisting that the show had become boring.

“When the show started it was such a different beast,” Usmagazine quoted her as telling the new issue of TV Guide.

“It was exciting and dangerous and funny and edgy and bizarre. It started feeling a little complacent, and that was very frustrating,” she added.

When told of her character Edie Britt’s demise, “I said, ‘OK, sayonara. It’s been a great ride. Thank you,’” she added.

The 45-year-old British actress said she would’ve left sooner, but all the women were “contractually bound, so there was no way out on your own terms.”

Sheridan also slammed show creator Marc Cherry for ignoring her, never adding her face to the opening credits and rarely speaking about her in interviews.

“When you have a jewel, why not polish it and put it out there for all to see?” she said.

However, Cherry insists Sheridan’s character was no longer relevant on the show and he was under tremendous pressure cut costs.

“Edie’s already slept with most of the guys on the street and has caused about as many problems as she could,” he said.

“There has been tremendous pressure put on me to cut costs … the network is saying to all the shows, ‘The company is really hurting financially. You must find a way to produce these shows ore cheaply,’” he added. (ANI)

TV show exonerates Osama bin Laden

BERLIN (Hollywood Reporter) – A Dutch TV jury has found Osama bin Laden not guilty of the September 11 attacks.

In the conclusion Wednesday night to the show “Devil’s Advocate” on Dutch public broadcaster Nederland 2, the jury of two men and three women, along with the studio audience, ruled that there was no proof bin Laden was the mastermind behind the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001.

The Netherlands, home to “Big Brother” creator Endemol, is known for being on the cutting edge of format-based television. But even for Dutch standards, “Devil’s Advocate,” from Amsterdam production house AVRO, pushes the envelope.

The show features star defense attorney Gerard Spong standing up for some of the world’s worst criminals.

In the latest show, Spong was able to convince the jury that bin Laden’s connection to September 11 was a product of “Western propaganda.” The jury also ruled there was insufficient evidence to prove bin Laden was the real head of terrorist network al-Qaida. The jury did rule, however, that bin Laden is a “terrorist who has misused Islam.”

The show is certain to provide further ammunition in the already heated Dutch debate over immigration and the country’s large Muslim minority. The Netherlands saw a sharp rise in anti-immigration and anti-Islamic sentiment after the 2004 murder of Dutch director Theo Van Gogh by a Muslim extremist.

Spong has been at the center of the debate, supporting legal action against anti-immigrant politician Geert Wilders.

AIG ex-CEO Greenberg, Congress spar over company mess

Maurice Greenberg, the former chief executive of American International Group Inc and creator of the doomed unit whose investments triggered its downfall, came under fire from U.S. lawmakers on Thursday who questioned his claims of ignorance.

“Crumbling of AIG began on your watch,” Darrell Issa, the ranking Republican on the House oversight and government reform panel, said in opening remarks, noting that Greenberg’s credibility was compromised amid various ongoing government probes.

Several congressional committees are probing the causes of the rise and fall of AIG, which got nearly $180 billion in government funds to prevent a bailout and is the largest recipient of government money. Taxpayers now own 80 percent of AIG.

Greenberg, who was the insurer’s CEO for more than 35 years and created the financial products unit that traded in credit default swamps, rejected claims that he had a role in ramping up the risky credit fault swaps business.

The fragile-looking, 83-year-old Greenberg said he knew of no losses from the products that were initiated during his tenure.

“As far as I know there were no losses … on the credit default swaps,” said Greenberg, who is mired in lawsuits with his former employer and various government bodies. “When I left the company, it was healthy.”

Greenberg was forced out by AIG’s board in 2005 after he refused to cooperate with an internal investigation into off-balance sheet transactions that were being scrutinized by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and various state attorneys general.

The probes did not have any connection to the financial troubles that nearly toppled AIG last September.

Asked by Rep. Elijah Cummings, a Maryland Democrat, if he took any responsibility for the subsequent collapse of the company, and noting that AIG lost its AAA bond rating days after he left, Greenberg said: “No, I do not.”

World’s oldest person, 130, credits cottage cheese, sense of humour for longevity!

London, Mar 25 (ANI): A Kazakhstan lady, who mothered ten children, will be celebrating her 130th birthday this week, making her the world’s oldest person by 16 years.

Sakhan Dosova’s age was discovered during a census in Karaganda in northern Kazakhstan, when the date of birth on her passport showed as 1879, which was the same year Edison invented the light bulb and Stalin and Einstein were born.

Dosova’s age surprised demographers when they found that she had been on Stalin’s first census of the former Soviet region in 1926, when her age was given as 47, and they are now trying to confirm the record.

For the 129-year-old lady, she puts her longevity down to her love for cottage cheese and her sense of humour, and never visiting a doctor or eating sweets.

“I don’t have any special secret. I’ve never taken pills and if I was ill I took grannies’ remedies,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

“I’ve never eaten sweets. But I love kurt – a salty dried cottage cheese – and talkan, a ground wheat,” she stated.

Dosova lives in poor conditions in an overcrowded flat with a granddaughter, Gaukhar Kanieva, 42, and apart from hearing problems she is in good health.

“She is a very cheerful woman. We think laughter and her good mood help her live so long,” Kanieva said of her grandma.

The aged lady has been congratulated by the local mayor, and as of now, she is the oldest living person in the world followed by American Edna Parker who is 114.

Dosova was born on March 27, 1879, when Queen Victoria had 22 years left to rule, Benjamin Disraeli was Prime Minister and Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published his first story. (ANI)

Robots take centre stage in U.S. war in Afghanistan

Washington, Mar.24 (ANI): The U.S. military is deploying the robots to Afghanistan to navigate the country’s treacherous terrain.

Called BigDogs, these robots are being deployed in addition to big guns.

The BigDogs – four-legged robots that can navigate the country’s treacherous terrain – and pilotless helicopters than can transport tons of supplies to very remote bases are just two of the new weapons being tested in Afghanistan, reports Fox News.

The machine’s creator, Boston Dynamics, has a motto – “dedicated to the way things move” – and that’s precisely what is both jarring and fascinating about its invention.

Using a gasoline engine that emits an eerie lawnmower buzz, BigDog has animal-inspired articulated legs that absorb shock and recycle kinetic energy from one step to the next.

Its robot brain, a sophisticated computer, controls locomotion sensors that adapt rapidly to the environment. The entire control system regulates, steers and navigates ground contact. A laser gyroscope keeps BigDog on his metal paws – even when the robot slips, stumbles or is kicked over.

Boston Dynamics says BigDog can run as fast as 4 miles per hour, walk slowly, lie down and climb slopes up to 35 degrees. BigDog’s heightened sense can also survey the surrounding terrain and become alert to potential danger.

All told, the BigDog bears an uncanny resemblance to a living organic animal.

Routine helicopter flights operating 24 hours a day, year round, are crucial for the American mission.

The Marine Corps has recently called for unmanned cargo flights to carry essentials to isolated areas that can be reached only by air.

Enter the K-MAX, a remote-controlled helicopter designed to transport heavy loads – even in Afghanistan’s high altitudes.

The K-MAX’s unique rotor design – two intermeshed rotors turning in opposite directions and slightly angled to prevent the blades from colliding – give this unmanned aircraft a distinct advantage.

“All the energy goes into the lift and eliminates the need for the tail rotor,” said Frans Jurgens, spokesman for Kaman Aerospace Corp, which manufactures the K-MAX.

The design enables the relatively small chopper to tow up to 6,000 pounds.

“The K-MAX is basically an aerial truck,” Jurgens said. (ANI)

When World Wide Web creator Sir Tim Berners-Lee fell victim to online fraud

London, Mar 15 (ANI): World Wide Web creator Sir Tim Berners-Lee has opened up about an experience when he fell victim to online fraudsters while trying to buy a gift over the Internet.

Sir Tim said that he bought a Christmas present from an online shop but it was only when the present didn’t arrive that he realised he had been conned.

“The worst thing that has happened to me was when I tried to buy a Christmas present from a company that looked like a bona fide company on the Internet and then actually they were a completely fake company. I think I am yet to get the money back, but it wasn’t a lot,” the Telegraph quoted him, as saying.

“The moment I called the 0800 number listed on the website, there was a very polite message saying this number is available if you would like to use it, so a little bit of due diligence on my part would have revealed it wasn’t what it was set up to be,” he added.

Sir Tim, who dreamt up the web 20 years ago, called on the authorities to put as much effort into fighting cyber crime as they do into conventional crime.

He also said new steps were needed to protect Internet users from malicious software that circulates over the Internet.

Speaking ahead of the Web Science 09 event, he was optimistic about the web’s future. However, he also expressed his concerns about security.

Sir Tim said he felt that online crime needed to be enforced as rigorously as crime in the real world, within international agreements to help prevent Internet criminals escaping prosecution by hiding in countries outside the jurisdiction of the law where their victims live. (ANI)

Adam Sandler sued over copyright infringement claims

London, February 25 (ANI): Adam Sandler has been slapped with a copyright infringement suit by a comic book writer, who claims the actor stole his idea for the film ‘You Don’t Mess With The Zohan’.

Writer Robert Cabell turned to the Manhattan Federal court and filed legal papers against the ‘Reign Over Me’ star and chiefs at Happy Madison Productions, Sony and Columbia Pictures in New York.

Cabell alleged that Sandler’s character Zohan, an Israeli hero who fakes his own death in order to pursue his dream of becoming a hairstylist in New York City, was lifted from his Hair-Raising Adventures of Jayms Blonde.

According to the New York Daily News, Cabell, who wanted his comic book character to be featured on the big screen, had pitched the idea to Columbia executives in 2007, reports the Daily Express.

The Blonde creator further claimed that Sandler began his project around the same time his ides was pitched, which was five years after the publication of the first books in the series. (ANI)

Johnny Depp’s dream role is to be a Python, says Terry Gilliam

London, February 22 (ANI): Johnny Depp would love to be a part of Monty Python, the hit British TV comedy sketch show, according to director Terry Gilliam.

The Monty Python creator revealed that Depp looked up to the six comedians in the group whose influence in comedy has often been compared to The Beatles’ influence on music

“Johnny always wanted to be a Python, ” the Daily Express quoted him as saying.

“He loves comedy and said ‘If I could have been a Python I would’ve been happy,’” he added.

Speaking of his team work with the star, he continued: “He’s so fast. I have an idea, he has a sillier idea. We leapfrog. I think that’s the heart of it.” (ANI)

Queen to relaunch Royal website with new-look

London, February 12 (ANI): The Queen is set to relaunch her website along with World Wide Web’s creator Sir Tim Berners-Lee at a Buckingham Palace reception.

Royal.gov.uk, which hit cyberspace 12 years ago, has had a makeover and will feature more videos, historical documents along with Queen Victoria’s journal, which includes her trial of Alexander Graham Bell’s then new discovery, the telephone.

The website, which presently has around 250,000 visitors from around the globe per week, has been updated to maintain contact between the younger generation and the elderly royal, reports The BBC.

However, the Queen’s Internet venture was claimed to be limited, with the channel saying: “We can’t e-mail her and there’s little prospect of the Queen blogging, conducting a webchat or indeed twittering.”

The site had been gathered much popularity in its first years, and went on to record some 35 million visits during the week of Princess Diana’s funeral.

The Monarch has also previously launched The Royal Channel on the video-sharing website YouTube, which included her Christmas Day message, and tapes of the members of the Royal Family. (ANI)

Religious viewers send me hate mail for not crediting God: Attenborough

London, Jan.27 (ANI): BBC television presenter and conservationist Sir David Attenborough has claimed that religious viewers send him hate mail for not crediting God for his nature’s bountiful benefits, and he expects more such letters when his latest project, a documentary about Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, is broadcast on Sunday.

“They tell me to burn in hell and good riddance,” The Telegraph quoted Sir David as saying while explaining that he is regularly asked why he does not “give credit” to the Lord for creating the flora and fauna featured in his programmes.

“They always mean beautiful things like hummingbirds. I always reply by saying that I think of a little child in East Africa with a worm burrowing through his eyeball. The worm cannot live in any other way, except by burrowing through eyeballs. I find that hard to reconcile with the notion of a divine and benevolent creator,” Attenborough adds.

Sir David said he was raised in a religion-free household and it had “never really occurred to me to believe in God… I do remember looking at my headmaster delivering a sermon, a classicist, extremely clever – and thinking, ‘He can’t really believe all that, can he? How incredible!’”

In an interview with the Radio Times, Sir David, 82, attacked the “terrible, terrible” fact that some British state schools are allowed to teach children that creationism and evolution have equal merit.

“It’s like saying that two and two equals four but, if you wish it, it could also be five. This is one of the errors. Evolution is not a theory. It is a fact, every bit as much as the historical fact that William the Conqueror landed in 1066,” Attenborough says. (ANI)

7 personality traits that can help sick-listed employees back to work

Washington, Jan 11 (ANI): Managers who are considerate and understanding can help employees return from sick leave early, says a new study, which has come up with seven most important leadership qualities.

The study led by the International Research Institute of Stavanger (IRIS) has outlined 78 manager qualities that are most likely to help sick-listed employees get back to work.

The three most often mentioned were ability to make contact, consideration and understanding.

“The employees find it important that their managers are understanding, supportive, attentive, empathetic, warm and friendly,” Science Daily quoted senior researcher Randi Wago Aas at IRIS, as saying.

“When they are on sick leave, people are in a position of vulnerability. Many of them talk about feeling suspected, and say their problems are not taken seriously”, she added.

The risk of long-term sick leave rises proportionally to the lack of support from the manager.

The 78 qualities were divided into seven categories. The one mentioned the most frequently, is nicknamed The Protector, who has caring qualities. Then comes The Problem Solver, who is the best at adapting.

The third most important is The Contact Maker, who gets in touch with the employee to inform of what is happening in the workplace and is also interested in how the employee is doing.

Fourth is The Trust Creator, who’s discreet, honest, open and creates a feeling of safety.

Then comes The Recognizer, who behaves acknowledging, confirming and without prejudice towards the employee.

The Encourager is the one who has a positive attitude, and is generous and happy. He motivates, inspires and is available.

And finally The Responsibility-maker, who is honest, to the point and gives the employee challenges and responsibility for his or her own situation.

The study also brought forth age differences in the individual’s needs while on sick leave.

Younger employees had the greatest need for protection and recognition, while those over 45 were more concerned with problem solving and being held responsible.

“Older people are probably more concerned with adaptation of their work environment, to make sure they can get back to work. Younger employees are possibly more vulnerable, and need more encouragement”, she said.

Another important finding revealed the difference in what the employees and the managers thought was important.

While, the employees emphasised recognition and encouragement, while managers were more concerned with accountability, and problem solving. (ANI)

French outrage over ‘gay Tintin’ claims

London, Jan 10 (ANI): As the whole world celebrates cartoon legend Tintin’s 80th birthday today, France is one nation where revels have been tainted by the ‘gay’ claim made by a British columnist.

France has long adored Tintin as one of its own although his creator, Georges Remy, known as Herge, was a French-speaking Belgian.

An article by Matthew Parris, The Times columnist, on Tintin’s “obvious” homosexuality has triggered uproar in the media and in the web world.

“They have walked on Tintin,” said the headline in French newspaper le Figaro, attacking The Times for “reviving for the upteenth time” the sexual orientation of the reporter whose adventures have sold more than 200 million copies, reports TimesOnline.

Parris said he came to the conclusion from an examination of Tintin’s life.

Tintin, who was born January 10, 1929, on the pages of a children’s supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtième Siècle, has an unknown background and origin, says Parris, adding: “This is common among young gay men, some of whom find it hard to believe that they really are their parents’ child.”

“What debate can there be when the evidence is so overwhelmingly one-way?” Parris asked.

“A callow, androgynous, blonde-quiffed youth in funny trousers and a scarf moving into the country mansion of his best friend, a middle-aged sailor? A sweet-faced lad devoted to a fluffy white toy terrier, whose other closest pals are an inseparable couple of detectives in bowler hats,” Parris added.

The gay theory might have been around for a long time now, but it was too much for some French critics.

“At this age the hormones are usually asleep,” sniffed Les Echos, the main business daily.

“But for Matthew Parris, it is never too late to wake up the houppette of the nice Belgian hero,” the daily added.

Houppette means both quiff and powder puff.

Le Figaro even pulled in Serge Tisseron, a celebrity psychiatrist, to explain that claiming the hero as gay “is a lovely revenge for a homosexual”.

“The problem is that the sexual dimension is totally absent. Tintin is a creature whose sex is never defined. Beware of launching into a sexual reading of Herge’s works. In reality all the characters in Tintin are children,” Le Figaro stated.

France Info, the public news radio network, pointed out that Herge, who died in 1983, scoffed at the gay Tintin theory after it was aired in the 1970s.

The standard view among Tintin fans is that the gay argument is irrelevant. (ANI)

Why Indians are influential– Part 1

By Dr. Shabir Choudhry

London, Jan 5 (ANI): In response to my article ”Why Jews are powerful and Muslims are powerless” I got a lot of response. Many appreciated it but some, once again, called me a ”Yahoodi agent” – agent of Jews, just because I have highlighted some of the contribution made by Jews to science and learning. Some said Jews are killing innocent Palestinians and you are praising them.

First of all I wrote that piece before the present crises started in Gaza. What Israel is doing in Palestine is condemned by people through out world and I also condemn it. But does it mean no one should talk of achievements of Jews just because Zionist government is killing innocent people? In any case a lot of contribution of Jews was made before the establishment of the Jewish State, and without its patronage.

As for blame game is concerned it is part of political culture of Pakistan and Kashmir to call those people ”agent” with whom there is political or ideological difference or personal goal to settle. Agencies of both India and Pakistan have been successful in creating this social and political environment where they no longer have to point fingers at anyone, as people are too eager to do it themselves. I got this ”title” of being ”agent of Jews” in 1999 when I wrote ”Pakistan should recognise Israel”.

Since that I have been ”awarded” with such more ”titles” for my political and literary work, but I have not given – in to this harassment, intimidation and blackmailing; and continued with my jihad of speaking truth and providing knowledge which I think is based on facts, and by promoting culture of tolerance, moderation and accountability.

Pakistan is one day older than India and is gifted with enormous natural resources and strategically very important geography. Apart from that Pakistan was the biggest Muslim country with close relationship with the Muslim world, which added to Pakistan”s potential to enhance its influence and power.

Today what we witness is (which is acknowledged by some Pakistani writers and politicians) that Pakistan stands alone in comity of nations; and majority of the countries, including Muslim countries stand with India; and take pride in having relations with India. Economically, politically, democratically, militarily and financially both countries are miles apart, emotionalism aside there is no comparison between them; both countries had to travel a long journey to reach this stage.

Victory always has more than one claimant, and no one likes to share blame in failure; and as Pakistan”s failures is too obvious in many fields I would not like to point them out as it could upset my Pakistani brothers, hence more allegations against me. Fact however remains that Pakistan cannot even provide sufficient food for its people, even though its economy is agrarian. Apart from that there is severe shortage of power, clean water and many other vital things. However there is no shortage of suicide bombers, bomb blasts, internal fighting, extremism, undemocratic decisions and American attacks. All these are recipe for disaster for any country and any society.

India”s success is mainly due to its democratic system. Despite corruption and other contradictions and problems in the society, the democracy and investment in education, science and technology has helped India to advance; and play an important role in world politics. Let us look at some achievements made by Indians.

Richest man in the world is an Indian, Mukesh Ambani who was born in April 1957. He completed his graduation in Chemical engineering, and studied for MBA at Stanford University, and joined Relinace Industries in 1981. He is a Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries and resides in Mumbai. He is the richest man in the world with total value of 63.2 billion dollars not because he is Hindu or an Indian, but because he is an entrepreneur who has worked hard for his position.

The fifth richest man is also an Indian, Lakshmi Mittal with total value of $50.9 billion. He was born on 15th of June 1950 in Rajasthan. He heads the multi national steel company Mittal Steel, which is one of the largest steel companies in the world, with steel making facilities in fourteen countries with 150,000 employees.

General Manager of Hewlett Packard is an Indian, Rajiv Gupta; creator of Pentium chip (90 percent of the today”s computers run on it) is also an Indian, Vinod Dahm. Creator of world”s No1 web based email program – hotmail is also an Indian – Sabeer Bhatia. The president of AT & T-Bell Labs – creator of programmes like C, C++, Unix etc is an India, Arun Netravalli. Microsoft Testing Director of Windows 2000 and responsible for all initial problems is an Indian, Sanjay Tejwrika.

There are 3.22 million Indians in USA – 1.5 percent of population, yet:

38 percent of doctors in USA are Indians;
12 percent scientists in USA are Indians;
36 percent of NASA scientists are Indians;
34 percent of Microsoft employees are Indians;
28 percent of IBM employees are Indians;
17 percent of INTEL scientists are Indians;
13 percent of XEROX employees are Indians.

Indians constitute ten percent of all medical students in America.

Indians own nearly 40 percent of all the small and mid-size hotels in the country.

Four out of 10 Silicon Valley startups are run by Indians.

Indians are the richest immigrant class in the US, with nearly 200,000 millionaires.

Between 1990 and 2000, the population of Indian scientists and engineers (S and E) in Silicon Valley grew by 646%.

Apart from that India consumes a fifth of the world”s gold output. India is the largest producer and consumer of tea in the world, accounting for more than 30 percent of global production and 25 percent of consumption. India is the world”s premier centre for diamond cutting and polishing. Nine out of every 10 stones sold in the world pass through India. India”s Hero Honda is the world”s largest motorcycle manufacturer, with 2002 production of 1.7m units. India has the second-largest pool of scientists and engineers in the world. India has the third-largest investor base in the world.
