Formosa to restart No.1 naphtha unit in 2-3 mths

July 15 (Reuters) – Taiwan’s Formosa Petrochemical Corp will restart its 700,000 tonne-per-year (tpy) No. 1 naphtha cracker within two to three months, its spokesman said on Thursday.

But the company is still uncertain when it will shut down its No. 2 cracker for maintenance. This unit was initially scheduled for maintenance on Aug. 20, but the outage at the the No. 1 cracker has disrupted the plan for now.

“The No. 1 cracker will resume operations around end September or October, but we cannot assume that the No.2 cracker will shut for maintenance following that,” he said.

Crackers have to be shut for mandatory inspection every few years, and the 1.03 million-tpy No. 2 cracker was supposed to be taken down for a 30-40 day maintenance.

“We are hoping that we don’t have to shut two crackers at the same time as the impact would be significant,” he added. (Reporting by Seng Li Peng; Editing by Ramthan Hussain)

Watson sails into Australian waters

Australian teenager Jessica Watson is on track to complete her quest to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world.

The 16-year-old from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast is now in Australian waters.

She is expected to pass Cape Leeuwin off the south-west coast of Western Australia this morning.

In her latest blog, the teen sailor said she celebrated the milestone with Vegemite on crackers.

“I found a few squid on the deck again … another one jumped on board just I was thinking about lunch so I got brave and decided to have a go at eating it,” she said.

“Then I finished up with Vegemite on crackers to celebrate being back in Australian waters!”

Watson said it was a memorable point in her journey.

“Hot chocolate in hand … a light sprinkling of rain and with an albatross circling above, it was one of those really special moments,” she said.

But there is still a small way to go before Watson’s journey comes to an end.

Next week she will pass under the Great Australian Bight and head south to Tasmania.

She cannot take a short-cut through the Bass Strait, as it would mean a few days with little or no sleep due to shipping and islands.

“It’s weird being so close, but still having so many miles to cover,” she said.

It is believed she will arrive in Sydney in about three weeks.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has welcomed Watson back to Australian waters.

Mr Rudd says Australians are proud of what she has achieved.

“Here you have a young Queenslander, a young Australian who’s shown great courage, great determination, and I believe is an inspiration for all Australians,” he said.

“Jess, it’s fantastic to have you back home.”

Lady Gaga likes to have a cup of tea and a plate of cheese before concert

London, March 31 (ANI): Eccentric pop diva Lady Gaga demands only a cup of tea and a small plate of cheese before a concert.

Gaga likes to have a decaf coffee or a strong cup of tea before she goes to perform on stage.

Her usual requests have healthy products like ‘low-fat milk’, ‘salsa and guacamole dips’, and ‘whole wheat bread’ and ‘crackers’.

The singer’s drinks list is absolutely alcohol free and only includes ‘Dr Pepper’, ‘ginger ale’, 12 bottles of ‘still water’ and a dozen bottles of ‘mineral water’.

The flamboyant diva, 24, needs a jar of honey, demands a tray of assorted meats and a whole roast chicken.

“Despite her out-there image, this rider proves that Lady Gaga is actually quite down-to-earth and normal compared to the diva-like demands of some pop stars,” the Daily Star quoted a music industry source as saying. (ANI)

Thrissur Pooram to be celebrated in Kerala on Sunday

Thrissur (Kerala), May 2 (ANI): Thousands of people witnessed spectacular fireworks ahead of Thrissur Pooram, one of the most colourful and grandest temple festivals, in Kerala.
‘Thrissur Pooram’, said to be the mother of all festivals, will be celebrated on Sunday.

A display of the gold plated ornaments for elephants, huge umbrellas and other items for the elephant parade on Sunday also attracted the enthusiasts in a big way.

This year the authorities have decided to use colourful eco-friendly crackers instead of the traditional high decibel pyrotechnics.

The featival is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The festival commences with the arrival of small processions, from various temples in different villages across Thrissur, and culminates at the grounds of Vadakkunnathan Temple.

“We are working to make Pooram a grand event this year. Almost all the arrangements are getting to the final stage,” said Madhavan Kutty, member of exhibition committee.

This festival is one of the biggest festivals in Kerala as no other festival draws such an unbelievable number of people to a single event.

It is believed that King Sakthan, who ruled Cochin in the late 18th century, started the festival.

The word “Pooram” literally means a group or a meeting. It is believed that the gods and goddesses meet on the day of celebration, which falls in the month of April-May every year. (ANI)
