MJ’s mum fumes over reports of interrupted CPR on dying son

New York, March 24 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s mother Katherine hit the roof after a report claimed the singer’s personal doctor interrupted CPR on her dying son and delayed calling 911 to stash drugs from paramedics.

Katherine, 79, is now demanding that the single charge of involuntary manslaughter against Dr. Conrad Murray be upgraded to that of a second degree murder following the new allegations.

“Mrs. Jackson never doubted that this man murdered her son, and these new revelations, if true, mean we need additional charges to fit the severity of his crimes,” the New York Daily News quoted her attorney Adam Streisand as saying.

“Second degree murder requires malice aforethought, which can be implied by the conduct of the defendant. The actions alleged suggest that Dr. Murray abandoned his duties as a physician or an ordinary human being to save himself rather than his patient,” he added.

Murray”s legal team has rejected the claims, arguing the leaked account by witness Alberto Alvarez, Jackson”s logistics director, was inconsistent.

Murray, has denied the charge and pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter. He admitted administering Propofol to help Jackson sleep hours before his death but said he gave him nothing to cause his death.

Jackson died aged 50 on June 25 last year at his home in Los Angeles. Coroners ruled the case as homicide mainly caused by an overdose of the anesthetic Propofol.

The next hearing has been set for April 5. (ANI)

‘MJ’s doc delayed calling 911 to conceal drugs’

New York, March 23 (ANI): Michael Jackson”s personal doctor has been accused of interrupting CPR and causing delay in calling 911 while he tried to conceal drugs.

Alberto Alvarez, a witness and Jackson’s logistics director, told investigators Dr. Conrad Murray, who is at the centre of involuntary manslaughter over the star’s death, the medic asked him to put rubber-topped drug vials into a brown canvas bag and an IV pouch with a milky fluid in its connector into a separate blue bag.

Alvarez added Murray only asked that paramedics be called after the drugs were stashed, the New York Daily News reported.

Miranda Sevcik, a spokeswoman for the lawyers representing Murray, said: “These leaks scream of insecurity. Prosecutors either want to taint the jury pool or bait us into answering so they can get a peak at our defense. Dr. Murray led investigators to where the propofol was before this statement [by Alvarez]. That has not been a secret.”

Murray previously confessed he waited 20 to 30 minutes before calling the authorities, saying he was unaware of Jackson”s address and had trouble summoning the singer”s staff while performing CPR.

The doctor also admitted administering propofol to help Jackson sleep and has denied the manslaughter charge.

Toddler rescued from water tank

A toddler has been rescued from a water tank at a property west of Brisbane this afternoon.

A rescue helicopter spokesman says the two-year-old boy fell into the tank at a property south of Gatton at about 1pm AEST.

His mother pulled him out and performed CPR.

He has been flown to Brisbane’s Mater Children’s hospital in a stable condition.

Jackson’s sister says he died in doctor’s bed

London, July 12 (ANI): Michael Jackson died not in his own bedroom as first reported, but on the bed in the room of his doctor, Dr Conrad Murray, across the hall, according to the late singer’s sister.

“I don’t know exactly what happened, whether he was giving him oxygen, but Michael ended up in the bed. The doctor was trying to give him CPR (resuscitation for cardiac arrest) on the bed,” News of the World quoted her as saying.

La Toya tried questioning Murray when she arrived at the UCLA hospital where the King of Pop had been taken.

She said: “Paris was in tears and said to me, ‘There’s Dr Murray. He’s the best cardiologist in the world, how can this happen to Daddy?’

“I said to him, ‘Tell me what happened?’ But he was vague and simply said, ‘He just didn’t make it.’ I wasn’t pleased with that answer, but you have to be careful as the kids were there. I felt weird and not right.

“This was the only man who knew what went on, but he wasn’t telling me. And then he disappeared,” she added. (ANI)

New mattress to double the effectiveness of CPR

Washington, July 12 (ANI): In a breakthrough innovation, students at Michigan Technological University (MTU) have designed a special mattress that can make cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) nearly twice as effective as an ordinary hospital mattress.

The young inventors have found that the mattress facilitates faster and more effective CPR, and are working towards releasing it in the market.

A standard hospital mattress, with six or more inches of foam, is pliable and cushiony.

Pushing down to administer CPR is like pushing on a big sponge, which makes the force to go into the mattress, and not the body lying on it.

But the new mattress has solved this problem, as it could be easily made firm by sucking the air out of the foam by just pushing button.

It makes use of some tubing, a little motor and a vacuum pump, and takes just ten seconds to work.

The researchers observed that only 43 percent of the CPR load winds up reaching the heart with a standard mattress, and it rises to 52 percent with a board underneath the mattress.

But with the MTU students’ design, it leaps to 81 percent.

One of the students in the team has founded a company, and is working to get this mattress into hospitals, especially in emergency rooms.

The students expect to have a patent by September 2009, and have been talking with a number of companies that have experience bringing medical products to market. (ANI)

MICHAEL JACKSON’s home  searche conducted by the Los Angeles police ,shortly after Jackson’s tragic death and have  discovered quantities of dangerous drug Propofol – which can be deadly if taken with narcotic painkillers.

MJ passed away on Thursday 25June 2009, followed by cardiac arrest at his California mansion.

The medication, which can only be administered with an intravenous drip (IV), can cause cardiac arrest

If drug is  taken in combination with narcotic painkillers, can cause cardiac arrest as the drug is so potent it can stop someone’s heart on its own.

Michael Jackson’s nutritionist now coming out and saying that the King of Pop desperate sedative called Diprivan.

Nurse / Nutritionist Cherilyn Lee has succeeded in treating Michael Jackson as a patient tells the media that in the last days Whacko Jacko was adamant to receive a powerful intravenous sedative called Diprivan or Propofol.

More questions arose Tuesday when a nurse Cherilyn Lee, a registered nurse who operates a Los Angeles-based nutritional counseling business, came forward to say that Jackson  was complaining of insomnia and requested  her to get him some Diprivan (propofol), a drug usually used to start or maintain anesthesia during surgeries.

But she  told Jackson “the medication is not safe.”

Four days before Jackson’s death, Lee said, a Jackson staffer called and said the pop star was complaining that one side of his body was hot and the other side was cold .

Nurse Cherilyn Lee, requested him to go to hospital and get treatment immediately.

She  said , “At that point, I knew that somebody had given him something that hit the central nervous system,”

she said, further, “He was in trouble Sunday and he was crying out.”

Jackson did not go to the hospital. He died June 25 after suffering cardiac arrest, his family said.

An injection of Diprivan can induce hypnosis within 40 seconds from the start of injection, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The drug’s product label says that propofol should only be administered by people “trained in the administration of general anesthesia.” Sedated patients should be continuously monitored, the product label says, and equipment to provide artificial ventilation, administration of oxygen and instituting CPR “must be immediately available.”

The product label warns that use of propofol for sedating adult and pediatric intensive care unit patients has  been associated with organ system failures that have resulted in death.

Now, Deepak Chopra questions actions of Jacko’s doctor

Washington, July 1 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s friend Deepak Chopra has joined other critics in casting a shadow of doubt over the actions of the late singer’s doctor in the star’s finals moments.

Dr. Conrad Murray was said to have spent 30 minutes performing CPR on the unconscious King of Pop before calling 911.

He evoked serious criticism for performing CPR on Jackson’s bed, and not on the floor, where it would have been more effective.

Experts further slammed Murray, questioning why he waited half an hour to call for the emergency services.

Murray, who was quizzed for three hours by the Los Angeles Police Department on June 27, was also suspected of injecting Jackson with the potent painkiller Demerol before the star collapsed in his home.

Jackson died aged 50 on June 25 from an apparent cardiac arrest purportedly triggered by an overdose of prescription pills.

And now revered Indian-American medic Chopra has questioned why Murray did not use withdrawal drug Narcan when he had realised the icon was unconscious from an apparent drug overdose.

“Any emergency room or any doctor who sees a doctor with an overdose, the first thing they do is give Narcan… Within minutes you see a response,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

However, Murray’s lawyer, Edward Chernoff, said that contrary to reports, the doctor did not give Jackson the powerful painkillers in the hours leading up to his death.

He said: “I believe when the toxicology (results) come back, you’re not going to find narcotics.” (ANI)

No food, just pills in Jacko’s ravaged frame at time of death

London, June 29 (ANI): Leaked autopsy details suggest that Michael Jackson was a virtual skeleton with only pills in his stomach, while his body was riddled with needle wounds and surgery scars at the time of his death.

Experts reportedly found the singer’s hips, thighs, and shoulders bore needle punctures, stemming from alleged injections of narcotic painkillers, given three times a day for years.

A mass of surgery scars was also apparently spotted due to at least 13 cosmetic operations, while investigating the cause of King of Pop’s shock death in Los Angeles on June 25.

The autopsy purportedly showed the ‘Thriller’ hitmaker, once hailed for his fitness, was “severely emaciated” 8st 1oz due to his assumed consumption of just one meagre meal a day.

The 5ft 10in star was also said to have virtually lost all his hair, and was discovered sporting a wig when he died. he 50-year-old bared broken ribs caused from CPR while four needle wounds were also found above or near his heart, according to reports.

The autopsy also reportedly showed yet to be explained bruising on Jackson’s knees and on the fronts of both shins, along with cuts on his back.

Further damage was thought to have been brought on by oxygen masks and tubing inserted during failed resuscitation bids.

“Michael’s family and fans will be horrified when they realise the appalling state he was in,” British tabloid The Sun quoted a source close to Jackson as saying.

“He was skin and bone, his hair had fallen out and had been eating nothing but pills when he died.

Injection marks all over his body and the disfigurement caused by years of plastic surgery show he’d been in terminal decline for years.

“His doctors and the hangers-on stood by as he self-destructed. Somebody is going to have to pay,” the source added.

Jackson’s family has demanded a second autopsy, which was reportedly carried out at a secret location after foul play was ruled out in the first one. (ANI)

Tyson’s girlfriend desperately tried to save strangled daughter’s life

Phoenix (Arizona), May 30 (ANI): Boxing legend Mike Tyson’s girlfriend desperately tried to save her strangled daughter’s life last Monday.

The transcript of her harrowing emergency phone call was released last night.yson’s four-year-old tot Exodus was found by her brother Miguel, seven, with her neck caught in the cord of an exercise machine.

The girl’s mother – believed to live with the former heavyweight champion in Phoenix, Arizona – called for help and was put through to the fire department.

In the tape, she is heard crying as she tries to explain the situation, reports The Sun.

She sobs: “My baby, she’s choked! She has the… the thing from the… my baby choked from the treadmill thing! Please!”

The medic asks if her daughter is breathing, and the frantic mum replies: “No, I don’t think so.

He tries to calm her down, telling her that emergency services are “coming as fast as they can”.

The man then talks her through performing CPR.

The woman can be heard saying: “There’s a lot of fluids in her mouth.”

The medic asks: “Fluids in her mouth?” – and Tyson’s girlfriend screams: “Yes! Blood!”

Police are then heard arriving, and a voice asks: “What happened?”

The mother replies: “She just got the cord… on the cord.”

An ambulance rushed Exodus to hospital and she was put on a life support machine but died a short time later. (ANI)

Tyson grieves as daughter dies

Phoenix (Arizona, US), May 27 (ANI): Mike Tyson and his ex-wife Sol Xochitl are reportedly in a shattered state after their four-year-old daughter, Exodus, died after getting her neck tangled in an electrical cord Monday.

The New York Post said the former boxing champ and Xochitl, spent yesterday huddled in grief in Phoenix, where the mom lived with the child, Exodus, and a 7-year-old son.

“There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Exodus,” Tyson said in a statement.

“We ask you now to please respect our need at this very difficult time for privacy to grieve and try to help each other heal.”

The child was pronounced dead at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital, where she had been rushed a day earlier after her brother, Miguel, found her hanging in a noose-like ring of cord attached to an exercise treadmill in the family’s home.

It was not known how long the child had been caught up in the cord before her mother freed her, called 911, and vainly tried to perform CPR.

Several hours after Exodus died, Tyson drove Xochitl back to the house to retrieve her car; neither went back inside.

A spokeswoman for Iron Mike said funeral arrangements were pending. Police were awaiting the results of an autopsy. (ANI)

Tyson’s daughter dies after hanging

Phoenix (Arizona, US), May 27 (ANI): Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson’s four-year-old daughter has died, a day after hanging herself in a freak accident on his treadmill.

The ex-world heavyweight champion, 42, kept a heartbreaking vigil by the side of Exodus on a life-support machine.

She had stopped breathing when her seven-year-old brother Miguel found her with her neck caught in the cord of an exercise machine at the family’s home in Phoenix, Arizona.

The girl’s mother performed CPR to bring Exodus back to life. Paramedics continued to try and revive her as she was rushed to hospital. But last night, Phoenix police said the little girl was pronounced dead in hospital.

According to The Sun, last night the family issued a statement to reporters saying: “The Tyson family would like to extend our deepest and most heartfelt thanks for all your prayers and support, and we ask that we be allowed our privacy at this difficult time.” (ANI)

Watching TV can help people learn to apply first aid skills in real life

London, Feb 2 (ANI): Watching TV helps people to learn and apply first aid skills in real life, according to a new survey.

The survey carried out for St John Ambulance, St Andrew’s Ambulance Association and British Red Cross showed that medical programmes like Casualty and ER make people confident to try and resuscitate others in real life.

One in five would try to give cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the person in need.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman, Isobel Sternfeld, said that people should not be frightened of trying, even if they have only seen it done before on TV.
“When you’re talking about things like CPR, you can’t make things worse,” the BBC quoted Sternfeld as saying.

“If someone’s not breathing, they’re not breathing. If you don’t do anything, they’re still not breathing, but if you do something you will be giving them a chance,” she added.

The survey also found men to be more confident about their abilities.

Nearly 30pct of the men surveyed said that they would attempt resuscitation, compared with 20pct of women.

The survey for first aid associations found 77pct did not know how to give cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

It also showed that most of the people did not know how to treat minor everyday injuries.

Sixty per cent of the study’s subjects were unaware of the correct way to deal with a nosebleed, and 57 per cent did not know how to help someone who had fainted.

One in three did not know what to do if a toddler was choking.

‘We want to empower everyone to know what to do in an emergency,” said Andrew New from St John Ambulance.

“First aid is easy if you know what to do. You can go on a course to learn from the experts or buy the new manual, which provides a simple step-by-step guide to how to deal with many different situations.
“No home should be without one,” he added. (ANI)

‘Heroine’ mum saves baby’s life four times in 10 minutes

London, January 27 (ANI): A Brit mother succeeded in saving her 12-week-old son – four times in 10 minutes – by using life-preserving techniques handed over by an emergency telephone operator.

Cordelia Nolan, who had previously learned emergency resuscitation procedures, gave her little Emrys 30 pumps in the chest for every two breaths, after he stopped breathing at her home.

The 25-year-old mum performed Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), an emergency medical procedure for a victim of cardiac arrest or, sometimes, respiratory arrest, on the baby, who was born 10 weeks premature.

Nolan followed the operator’s instructions, despite fearing to lose him four times during the 10-minute call.

By the time paramedics arrived, the brave single mum had pumped her son’s heart back into life.

“His colour drained out and he went blue. Luckily my cousin was there and he dialled 999. I started CPR straight away, as I had been offered training in it because he was premature,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“I did not have time to think and just did it. I’m not really a heroine; I just did what any mother would do instinctively,” she added.

She continued: “I would bring him back, he would cry a bit and then drain again. I was listening for breath and giving mouth to mouth over the nose and mouth. I would urge any new mother to do the same training.

“The advice on the phone was really reassuring, and it would have been vital if I had not had knowledge of CPR.

“It was only when I got the hospital that I reacted, and was physically sick. After his less than relaxed start to life, hopefully his journey can be a bit more chilled out. He is doing really well now – but he owes me one!” (ANI)

McCarthy understands Travolta’s grief after having faced similar ‘tragedy’

Washington, January 15 (ANI): Jenny McCarthy understands devastated couple John Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston’s grief following the death of their young son, for the model herself “lost” her son after he suffered a seizure.

The grieving celebrity couple recently bade their 16-year-old Jett a final goodbye after the teenager died from a seizure during a family holiday in the Bahamas.

McCarthy revealed that the Travolta tragedy sent her back in the dreadful time when her young Evan once went into cardiac arrest following a seizure.

“My stomach flipped (when I heard the news)… Evan also, after a seizure, went into cardiac arrest, where I lost him for two minutes,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

The actress-activist further revealed that she could imagine what the pair must have gone through as experts tried to revive their son.

“I too watched the paramedics do CPR on Evan, and didn’t know if he was going to come back,” she said.

“We did get him back and then he suffered another seizure last year, when we had to put Evan in a coma for four days, so he wouldn’t go into cardiac arrest.

“So I live on that edge that they (Travolta and Preston) have lived with Jett for all those years,” she added. (ANI)

re-diabetes, an epidemic that Indians need to be concerned about (ANI-Medical Service – Diabetes)

New Delhi, Jan.13 (ANI): Pre-diabetes is a condition where blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be called diabetes. re-diabetes has been shown to have harmful effects on the body in the long run, and is a disease that Indians need to be concerned and informed about.

A pandemic of obesity and diabetes is occurring. Diabetes now affects an estimated 24.1 million people in the United States, an increase of over three million people in approximately two years.

Another 57 million people in that country have pre- diabetes, some of whom in fact already have micro-vascular changes (such as blindness, amputations and kidney failure) consistent with diabetes.

In India, over 30 million have been diagnosed with diabetes. The CPR (Crude Prevalence Rate) in the country’s urban areas is thought to be about nine per cent. In rural areas, the CPR is approximately three per cent of the total population. Another estimate says that the actual number of diabetics in India is around 40 million. As far as the pre-diabetic population is concerned, only China surpasses India, and by 2025,every fifth diabetic in the world will be an Indian.

IGT (Impaired Glucose Tolerance) is also a mounting problem in India. The prevalence of IGT is thought to be around 8.7 per cent in urban areas and 7.9 per cent in rural areas, although this estimate may be too high. It is thought that around 35 per cent of IGT sufferers go on to develop Type 2 diabetes. So, India is genuinely facing a healthcare crisis and the type of diabetes that its people suffer from differs considerably from what patients in the West suffer from.

Pre-diabetes currently refers to people who have impaired fasting glucose (IFG) i.e. fasting glucose levels between 100- 125mg/dl or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), i.e. two hours post glucose load between 140-199mg/dl or both. Pre-diabetes raises short-term absolute risk of Type 2 diabetes five to six fold, and in some populations this maybe even higher.

As the prevalence of and progression to diabetes continues to increase, diabetes-related morbidity and mortality have emerged as major public health care issues.

People with diabetes are vulnerable to multiple and complex medical complications. These complications involve both cardiovascular disease (heart disease, stroke) and peripheral vascular disease) and microvascular disease.

Epidemiologic evidence suggests that these complications of diabetes begin early in the progression from normal glucose tolerance to frank diabetes.

Early identification and treatment of persons with pre-diabetic conditions has the potential to reduce both the incidence of diabetes and related cardiovascular and microvascular disease. Therefore, the following steps need to be considered:

Management of pre-diabetes:

The management of pre- diabetes involves a set of global treatment measures designed to address its abnormalities. The preferred treatment approach for all the abnormalities of persons in this group is intensive lifestyle management, given its safety and the strong evidence of efficacy of this approach in improving glycemia and reducing cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension and Dyslipidemia.

Persons with pre- diabetes should reduce weight by 5-10 percent with long-term maintenance at this level. Even modest weight loss (seven to ten percent of body weight) results in decreased fat mass, blood pressure, glucose, low density lipoprotein, and triglyceride levels. These benefits can also translate into improved long-term outcome, especially if weight loss and lifestyle alterations are maintained.

A program of regular moderate-intensity physical activity for 30-60 minutes daily, at least five days a week is recommended.

The diet should be low in total, saturated fat and trans-fatty acids and with adequate dietary fiber. Specifically for blood pressure, lifestyle recommendations would include lower sodium intake and avoidance of excess alcohol.

Blood Pressure in pre-diabetes:

Pre-diabetic patients should achieve the same target blood pressure currently recommended for persons with diabetes, systolic – 130 and diastolic – 80mmHg.

Lipid goals in pre-diabetes:

Persons with pre- diabetes should achieve the same lipid goals as those with established diabetes i.e. cholestrol, non – HDL cholestrol, or apoB treatment goals of 100mg/dl, 130mg/dl, and 90mg/dl respectively.

Monitoring in pre-diabetes:

Monitoring of patients with pre diabetes to assess for worsening of glycemic status should include regular blood sugar test and testing for micro-albuminuria. Those patients at highest risk should be more carefully monitored. Fasting blood sugars, Glycosylated haemoglobin (index of sugar control in last three months) and lipid profile should be followed at least twice a year. If the results of monitoring reveal worsening hyperglycemia, intensified lifestyle and treatment with anti – diabetic medicines must be considered. (ANI)

John Travolta says he did everything he could to keep Jett alive

London, January 5 (ANI): ‘Heartbroken’ John Travolta has revealed how the actor tried his best to keep his son from passing away.

Sixteen-year-old Jett, who had a history of seizures arising from the rare condition Kawasaki Disease, had been found unconscious on January 2 by caretaker Jeff Katharain.

He is thought to have died after hitting his head on a bathtub following a seizure in a hotel bathroom on a family holiday in the Bahamas.

The 54-year-old grieving father had come in shortly and administered CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) – an emergency medical procedure– on his son, who was later pronounced dead at a Freeport hospital.

“I tried the kiss of life for about 20 minutes. I wouldn’t give up. Jeff gave Jett CPR,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

“I did everything I could to keep Jett alive. The paramedics took over from me when they arrived,” he added.

Travolta’s lawyer Michael McDermott revealed the measures taken to ensure that Jett was properly looked after.

He said: “John and Kelly had everything possible set up for an emergency in Jett’s life. Jeff slept 8ft from Jett. There was a baby monitor right next to him in his bed. And a chimer attached to the bathroom door announced when Jett was going in. All this was because he was prone to seizures”.

It is yet to be determined whether Jett fell to the floor as a result of a seizure or he had a seizure after falling or slipping.

An autopsy is due to be performed on Jett to determine the cause of his death. (ANI)

John Travolta tried to resuscitate son when he saw him lifeless on floor

Washington, January 4 (ANI): John Travolta had administered CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) – an emergency medical procedure– on his son, who had been found dead at the actor”s vacation home in the Old Bahama Bay resort community.

Jett, 16, who had a history of seizures arising from the rare condition Kawasaki Disease, had been found unconscious in the bathroom on January 2 by caretaker Jeff Katharain.

A hotel manager had been first to arrive on the scene, and along with Katharain, had tried to get the teenager’s heart going with CPR.

The 54-year-old grieving father had come in shortly and from then on taken over, reports FoxNews.

Michael McDermott, the actor’s corporate and commercial attorney, told TMZ, John for a “substantial period of time was performing CPR and continued that until EMT came and took over.”

The teenager had been taken to Rand Memorial Hospital, Freeport, where he was pronounced dead, Police Superintendent Basil Rahming said in a statement.

It is yet to be determined if Jett fell to the floor as a result of a seizure or if he had a seizure after falling or slipping.

Obie Wilchcombe, a parliament member and former tourism minister in the Bahamas said two specialists would perform autopsy on Jett’s body on January 5 to determine the cause of his death. (ANI)
