CPI(M) seeks special package for J-K farmers

Srinagar, Jun 6 (PTI) CPI(M) in Jammu and Kashmir today demanded from the Centre a special package for rehabilitation of farmers and cattle owners who suffered extensive losses due to inclement weather conditions in the state. “I urge the state government to project the losses before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit to the state so that special financial assistance from the Centre could be assured for providing relief to the affected people,” state Secretary of CPI(M) M Y Tarigami said in a statement.

He appealed to the government to prepare a contingency plan to ensure timely relief to the affected and to minimise the losses. Tarigami said crop insurance scheme that was recently announced for the state be implemented during the monsoons and stressed for inclusion of horticulture sector under the scheme.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be on a two-day visit to Kashmir from tomorrow during which he is expected to renew the offer for talks with separatists and review the progress in the Round Table peace initiative and development work being undertaken in the state.

CPI-M to stage protest marches against Gaza attacks

Thiruvananthapuram, June 6 (PTI) CPI-M has directed its local committees across Kerala to stage protest marches today and tomorrow against Israel”s attacks on the peace ships to Gaza in Palestine. The peace ships proceeded to Palestine to ease the hardships of Gaza residents caused by Israel”s blockade, a statement from the state secretariat of the party said.

It said the Centre had not even protested against the “heinous” action of Israel, which was part of their efforts to become a “junior partner” of the US. The secretariat requested all human rights activists to come together “against the American-Israel tie-up to destroy the Palestinian people

No consensus in CPI(M) Polit Bureau on political review draft

New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI) The CPI(M) Polit Bureau today appeared to have failed to reach a consensus on a draft of their review on political decisions taken after 2007 Party Congress and decided to meet again next month to finalise it. The two-day meeting of the top party leaders, which ended here today, discussed the outline of the draft resolution which will be presented at the extended meeting of the Central Committee in Vijayawada scheduled in August.

“No, no. We have not reached on a consensus.

That is why there is one more meeting. There are differences on the implementation of political line adopted in the last Party Congress,” a senior CPI(M) leader said when asked about the deliberations in the two-day meeting.

The Polit Bureau will meet again on July three and four to finalise the draft which will be presented before the Central Committee which will discuss it for three days from July 21. The extended Central Committee meeting is being held as CPI(M) decided to postpone the Party Congress, which was to be held this year, due to upcoming assembly polls in West Bengal.

Sources said there were intense discussions on the decisions taken by the party leadership with regard to aligning with non-BJP, non-Congress parties like Samajwadi Party, BSP and others during the past three years. There were also discussions on the strategy adopted during cut motions and its fall out, they said.

However, the leaders were unanimous in backing the decision to withdraw support to UPA government on Indo-US nuclear deal in 2008. “There were no opposition to the decision to withdraw support to UPA either in Polit Bureau or Central Committee.

But there were discussions on other issues on which decisions were taken after the Party Congress. That was reviewed.

We discussed these problems,” senior Polit Bureau member M K Pandhe told reporters here. Another Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said there was one round of discussions on the document to be presented in Vijayawada.

“The Polit Bureau discussed the outline of a draft document for the extended meeting of the Central Committee to be held in August. The PB will meet next month to finalise the draft to be presented to the Central Committee,” he said.

On the Bengal civic polls, party leaders said a preliminary report was presented in the meeting. “The West Bengal state committee will conduct a review of the election on the basis of which necessary political and organisational steps can be taken to win back the confidence of those sections of the people which have moved away from the party,” Yechury said.

Trinamool to stay with UPA govt for full tenure: Mamata

Making it clear that Trinamool Congress would remain a “trusted” ally of UPA government for its full tenure, party chief Mamata Banerjee has kept her cards close to her chest on an alliance with Congress for the West Bengal Assembly polls, saying that “nothing is closed”.

“I will speak on what is happening today. I will not speak about the future. We have gone to the people when all others had left us and they (people) have supported us. When opportunity comes in the future, we will speak. Nothing is closed,” Banerjee said in an interview after her party’s triumph in civic polls which it fought without a tie-up with the Congress.

“When the UPA-II government was formed, we as an ally made a commitment to remain in it for five years. We will stay unless we are pushed out,” Banerjee said.

55-year-old Banerjee, however, said, “those who are saying that we are not to be trusted, should understand that we are more trusted then anybody else. There cannot be comparison between our commitment and those of others. We only want love and respect.”

Stating that the Left parties were the main allies of the UPA-I before they quit on the nuclear deal issue, she said her party will remain in UPA-II “as long as CPI(M) is not there.

“If there are relations with the CPI(M) we cannot stay. We cannot co-exist with the CPI(M) just as and DMK and AIADMK cannot coexist,” the TC supremo, whose party is the second largest ally in the UPA with 19 MPs, said.

On her ties with the UPA, the Railway Minister said that there should be reciprocity “in the way we love and respect them. We also want a reciprocal gesture. We don’t want anything more than that.”

Describing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as “a good man and a gentleman”, she said, “We have got all his blessings and support. He is a good administrator. He has information about who is doing what.”

Asked about a senior Congress leader saying in the acrimonious run-up to the civic polls that alliance could not be made at the cost of the party, she said, “I respect senior leaders of the Congress.

“I have no comment. Anybody can make some comment. It is their prerogative and their choice.”

On suggestions by a section of Bengal Congress leaders that the party could not be written off because of the the civic poll outcome and was in a position for seat-sharing on honourable terms with the Trinamool for the 2011 assembly polls, she said, “They got the verdict of the people. The verdict itself speaks about performance.”

To a question on CPI(M) Politburo member Biman Bose’s statement that Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee would not step down and there was no question of advancing the assembly elections, she reiterated, “We are in favour of the early elections.

She accused the CPI(M) of raising the bogey of post-poll violence.

“If there was violence, it would have erupted within 72 hours,” she said when asked about CPI(M) statement that the chief minister had skipped the CPI(M) Politburo meeting in New Delhi to control post-poll violence in in the state.

“That there was no post-poll violence, credit should go to us since we have told our workers not to take out victory processions maintain restraint. By raising the bogey of violence, the ruling party is trying to instigate violence.”

India urged to condemn Israeli attack on flotilla

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Monday urged the government to condemn the Israeli attack on a flotilla of six ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

‘India must also work actively with other countries from the non-aligned nations in the UN and other bodies to force Israel to lift the illegal siege of Gaza,’ the CPI-M said in a statement.

The statement said Israeli armed forces ‘illegally attacked’ the flotilla in international waters Sunday night, killing at least 15 international activists and injuring many.

About 700 activists from a number of countries were on the six ships aiming to take 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Gaza, ‘which has been under relentless siege for almost three years now’.

‘The attack … shows the complete contempt Israel has for international law or international opinion. Attacking ships in international waters and killing its passengers is a brazen act of piracy,’ it said.

Left, Mamata try to corner each other

Kolkata, May 29 — With municipal polls across West Bengal scheduled for Sunday, both the ruling Left Front and Trinamool Congress sought to use Friday’s tragedy to score political points. As Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee is also Union railway minister, the CPI(M) lost no time in demanding her resignation over the railway disaster.

The Railways, it said, had clearly failed to check tracks closely in a Maoist area, despite regulations to that effect. “The railway minister should accept responsibility,” said CPM state secretary, Biman Bose.

Banerjee in turn, rushing to the accident spot, demanded a central enquiry as she had no faith in the Left Front ruling the state. “It is very unfortunate so many innocent lives have been lost.

We should not play games with innocent lives,” she said, without directly blaming the Maoists. Though the official statements of both the CPM and Left Front made no reference to it, some CPM leaders did not hesitate to refer to Banerjee’s alleged proximity to Maoists.

The rebels had supported her during Banerjee’s campaign against forcible land acquisition in Nandigram. “Mamata Banerjee has never been critical of the Maoists.

Even today she did not criticise them, though so many innocent lives have been lost,” said Mohammed Salim, former MP and CPM central committee member. Banerjee has often claimed that the ‘terrorism’ of the Left Front cadres is worse than the Naxal menace.

Tamil Nadu: Left, MDMK to support ADMK in RS polls

The Opposition Left parties and the MDMK have decided to extend support to the AIADMK for the coming Raja Sabha election. The term of six members from the state, including four from the AIADMK, former Union Minister Anbumani Ramadoss and Congress leader E M Sudarsana Natchiappan, is coming to an end next month.

It was rumoured that MDMK chief Vaiko and CPI state secretary D Pandian, both of whom had lost in the Lok Sabha election, were in the running for the one seat the AIADMK was ready to share. However, it was announced on Wednesday after a meeting of the allies at Opposition Leader J Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence that the smaller parties would support AIADMK candidates.

With only 55 MLAs, AIADMK needs the support of the allies — CPM, CPI and MDMK — to get its second nominee elected. The party has convened its executive committee meeting on Thursday when the two candidates for RS are expected to be announced.

On the other side of the political divide, the Congress can send a representative to the RS and is said to be in talks with the DMK for one more, while former ally PMK has sought its help in re-electing Anbumani. It is not clear if the DMK leadership has taken a favourable decision in this regard.

Now, Buddha asks for BJP votes

In a new twist to the ongoing politics prior to the civic polls, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Wednesday asked BJP supporters to vote for the Marxists. Bhattacharjee made this appeal while addressing a public meeting in Bansdroni.

“I appeal to those who support the BJP and vote for that party, do not spoil your vote. Vote for us, I assure you that we will work for the city,” said Bhattacharjee.

The BJP has fielded 92 candidates in the Kolkata municipal election and in the last parliamentary elections its vote share was 6.36 per cent. The party can play a vital role in the victory of any candidate in Kolkata and other civic bodies.

An angry BJP retaliated: “They have come to our doors with a begging bowl. It shows we are important to both the CPM and the Trinamool. Following the split between the Congress and the Trinamool over seat sharing, the TMC had also asked for our votes. They are mistaken because a BJP voter will never vote for any other party,” said Rahul Sinha, party’s state unit president.

“If a section of BJP voters cast their vote for the Left candidates, it will be easier for us to contest TMC candidates,” said a CPI(M) leader.

Orissa: CPI demands shifting of POSCO project

Bhubaneshwar, May 21 (ANI): Rejecting the Orissa Government’s formula of excluding 300 acres of private land from the proposed POSCO project site area near Paradip, the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Friday demanded that the entire site be shifted elsewhere.

Addressing the media CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan demanded an official statement on overall impact of the project on the state.

“Giving up only 300 acres of private land is a ridiculous idea. This cannot be a solution. We want the whole project to be shifted from the area identified near Paradip,” Bardhan said.

Bardhan termed his meeting with Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik as “very disappointing.”

On Thursday evening, Bardhan held a meeting with Patnaik along with state CPI leaders.

Bardhan said since over 4000 acres of land is needed for the plant, leaving out only 300 acres private land in Dhinkia village is meaningless.

He demanded to shift the project location elsewhere in Jagatsinghpur District or in areas bordering Puri District where displacement of people would be less.

“The government should realize that it is not just a piece of land but involves livelihood of the people depending on fertile land and betel vines for generations,” Bardhan said adding “Forest dwellers in the area cannot be uprooted in an illegal manner without holding proper village meetings.”

“Though it is billed as India””s biggest FDI capable of creating jobs, government must publish details about its cost in terms of loss of land, minerals, water and its adverse impact on poor people,” he added.

Describing Patnaik’s proposal for talks between protesters and Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) as opening of a small window, Bardhan said any attempt to acquire land or conduct survey for the proposed 12mtpa steel plant pending discussion would be opposed tooth and nail.

He also demanded to withdraw charges against over 800 anti-Posco agitators. (ANI)

CPI-M seeks A. Raja”s resignation on 2G-spectrum scam

New Delhi, May 21 (ANI): Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sitaram Yechury reiterated his party”s demand for the resignation of Communication Minister A Raja over the 2G telecom spectrum allocation controversies.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Thursday, Yechury said: ”It is clear from the auction which has taken place that the government would be getting double the revenue much more than the expectations.”

“The 60,000-70,000 crore rupees talks that have taken place during this auction, if you compare it with the 2G auction; they sold it for a mere 2,000-2500 crore rupees. Since then we are alleging that a huge money scandal is involved in this case. And the 3G auction proves that a scam has taken place,” he added

“Till the scam is investigated, we want the Minister to resign from his post. This was the demand we kept initially and we reiterate the same demands now after the 3G experience,” said Yechury.

The auction for the 3G spectrum telephones was successfully completed on Wednesday after a prolonged exercise lasting 34 days.

Reportedly, this has assured the government of rupees 67,710 crore in revenue with the Pan-India licence price touching rupees 16,750.58 crore .

Communication Minister raja had been gaining criticism and the government is believed to have lost around rupees 60,000 crore for not taking the auction route stipulated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Companies had to pay rupees 1,651 crore for pan-India 2G licence that came clubbed with start-up spectrum. (ANI)

Prakash Karat on ways to tackle Maoist menace

Guwahati (Assam), May 19 (ANI): Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) General Secretary Prakash Karat has said that socio-economic issues need to be tackled first, while dealing with the Maoist menace in the country.

Prakash Karat said the problem posed by Maoists has to be looked from the socio-economic point of view besides counter operations by security forces.

“Steps must be taken in the Maoist affected regions to see that the tribal people”s socio economic problems are also solved. We can tackle the problem by this approach. There is no doubt that the whole country condemns the sort of Maoists violence, said Karat.

“We must also go forward to see how they can be isolated and they can be defeated,” he added at a meeting, which was attended by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.

Apart from Maoist extremism, Karat also spoke about the issue of price rise.

The CPI-M leader also expressed his views on the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament, asserting that black money and politics is getting involved in it. (ANI)

Mukherjee tells industry captains that food inflation is coming down

New Delhi, May 12 (ANI): Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday said food inflation is coming down in the wake of a good monsoon prediction.

Speaking at CII National Conference and Annual Session here, Mukherjee said: “I expect inflation based on Consumer Price Index – Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) to decline rapidly as the price of the food items is now declining.”

The government has taken a host of initiatives to deal with rising prices, Mukherjee said, adding, “Inflation erodes real income. It hurts the marginalised and the poor segment of our society the most.”

Admitting that a large chunk of people don”t get the benefit of economic growth, he urged upon the private sector to play a catalytic role in the process of inclusive growth.
“Private sector has an important role to play in filling the rural education gap especially in the area of vocational training to address the growing shortage of skilled workers,” he added.

As regards economic growth, Mukherjee said, “IMF in its latest World Economic Outlook has projected India”s GDP growth to be 8.8 per cent in 2010, and 8.4 per cent in 2011 and I expect an even better performance.”

The economy was estimated to record a growth rate of 7.2 per cent during 2009-10 despite the impact of unfavourable monsoon on the farm sector, he added.

He further said that discussions are on to strengthen the public distribution system (PDS).
“The Government also is keen to strengthen assessment and evaluation of all the programmes and schemes,” he added. (ANI)

Suspected Maoists kill CPI (M) leader in West Midnapore

West Midnapore (West Bengal), May 8 (ANI): Suspected Maoists killed a local Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader at his residence in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district on Friday.

Local Committee Secretary of CPI (M) and West Midnapore District Committee member Himangshu Maity was asleep when a group of suspected Maoists arrived at his home around midnight and shot him dead.

Sisir Maity, the deceased”s brother, said that the group broke into the house through the back door and hit everyone inside before they shot dead his brother.

“We were sleeping at that time when suddenly some people started hammering on doors. We got scared. Then some people requested to open the doors but we didn”t, then they broke the backside of our home, and after entering they hit everyone and finally they fired on him,” said Maity.

The rebels alleged that Himangshu Maity was an informer to security forces.

Maoists have spread into rural pockets in 20 of India”s 28 states and their crusade has upset business prospects worth billions of dollars in mining and allied industries.

Thousands have been killed in the Maoist insurgency, which began in the late 1960s, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has warned that the rebels have managed to retain support among a cross-section of society, and remain the country”s biggest internal security threat. (ANI)

CPI-M seeks apology from Trinamool over unparliamentarily language against its leader

New Delhi, May 5 (ANI): The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) on Wednesday sought an apology from the opposition Trinamool Congress over the alleged derogatory remarks made by its leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay against CPI-M leader Basudeb Acharia inside the Parliament.

“From the very beginning we have seen whenever we try to say anything inside the House, immediately all the Trinamool members shout, and interrupt, disturb so they are doing this thing from very beginning,” said CPI-M leader Basudeb Acharia.

“Strategy, we will ask, request the Speaker to ask him to apologise,” he added.

Meanwhile, CPI-M State Secretary Biman Bose said the Parliament should deal with the matter.

“Actually this issue has to be dealt with by the parliament and the custodian, they are to look after the issue seriously,” said Bose.

Controversial remarks disrupted Parliament on Wednesday leading to adjournments of each of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, with an angry opposition seeking an apology.

Census inclusion of Bangladeshis causes Lalu, Ananth spat

New Delhi, May 5 (ANI): The Lok Sabha was adjourned for a second time on Wednesday evening after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ananth Kumar and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad had a strong exchange over Bangladeshi’s being registered as Indian citizen in the current Census.

Kumar drew the attention of the House to the alleged activities of Bangladeshi refugees and the attempt by illegal migrants to register themselves as Indian citizens.

Kumar demanded a statement from the Government on the issue.

He asked whether members of the House are with pro-Nationals or with anti nationals, and alleged that the Bangladeshi effort was not happening without the support of some politicians.

This agitated Lalu Prasad so much so that he tried to walk over to Kumar, but Samjwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh stopped him.

The exchange of words between the BJP and the RJD and SP members continued the Speaker to adjourn proceedings in the House.

Earlier, opposition members forced an adjournment of proceedings till 2 p.m, raising several issues, including Trinamool leader Sudip Bandopadhyay”s remarks against a CPI-M member and the controversy surrounding 2G spectrum bids.

Soon after Speaker Meira Kumar called for Question Hour, Left members rushed to the Well and started demanding an apology from Trinamool Congress member Sudip Bandopadhyay for his remarks against CPI(M) member Basudeb Acharia.

Kumar”s repeated appeals to allow Question Hour to continue went unheeded even as members from the Treasury benches waved the agenda papers demanding that the House functions properly.

AIADMK members also stormed into the Well waving copies of a newspaper that carried reports on the controversy surrounding 2G spectrum bids.

They demanded the resignation of Communications Minister and DMK leader A Raja.

DMK sources however, have ruled out the possibility of Raja resigning.

Sources said Raja has emerged as the Dalit face of the DMK and enjoys good rapport with Karunanidhi.

Though Raja is embroiled in two major allegations — the spectrum allotment — and his alleged telephone call to a Madras High Court judge for a favourable order– Karunanidhi has been defending him. (ANI)

GJM chief accuses West Bengal government of creating hurdles

Champasari Block (WB), May 5 (ANI): Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) chief Bimal Gurung has charged the West Bengal Government with creating hurdles in the democratic movement of his party.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Gurung termed this act of the Left Front as follies similar to its mistakes in Singur and Nandigram, which would wipe out the ruling alliance in the 2011 assembly elections.

“We know that the police will intercept us everywhere…the policemen blocked us our agitations which is not good. This very policy will wipe out the state government. The government had followed this policy in Nandigram and Singur and it is the main reason of the fallout of CPI (M) in the province and I hope that in the forthcoming 2011 assembly elections the party would be wiped out completely,” Gurung said
The sixth round of tripartite talks between the GJM, the Central and West Bengal Governments”” is to be held on May 14.

The GJM had agreed during the fifth round of tripartite talks in New Delhi to the constitution of Interim Council by next year prior to the creation of a separate state.

The Gorkhas are demanding a separate state to protect their culture and heritage.

The Gorkha population in West Bengal is estimated to be around a million. (ANI)

12-hour shutdown paralyses normal life in Tripura

Tripura (Agartala), Apr 27 (ANI): A 12-hour shutdown called by the Left-led 13 party front demanding immediate control on spiralling prices; roll back in customs duty on crude oil and excise tax on petroleum products paralysed normal life across Tripura on Tuesday.

Several parties, including the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), Forward Bloc, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) imposed the strike to protest against the rise in prices of essential commodities and petroleum.

None of the offices in the state registered any attendance. Shops and markets were closed and vehicles did not ply on the roads.

Schools and colleges were closed and Tripura University cancelled the examinations scheduled today.

No untoward incident was, however, registered in any of the police stations.

The strike invited strong criticism from the Opposition.

“This strike is a protest against the price hike of essential commodities but frankly speaking strikes are of no use and they worsen the suffering of poor people,” said Sanjay Ram, a school teacher.

“There have been hundred and dozens of strike but what is the result, had it given any fruitful result then India would be in the first count of developed nations,” he added.

Train services were adversely affected as hundreds of protesters squatted on roads. Long distance trains remained stranded at several stations and bus services were also impacted.

“Today”s nation wide strike is in protest against the price hike of essential commodities including petrol product and fertilizer,” said Chanchal Mazumder, a Left Trade Union supporter.

“We also protest against the secessionist forces and demand work guarantee for all unemployed,” he added.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not a part of this shutdown. (ANI)
