Osama’s son killed in Pakistan

Islamabad, May 2 (IANS) A son of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has been killed in Pakistan, a media report said.

SWAGs bare all to help war heroes

Melbourne, April 21 (ANI): Service Wives and Girlfriends (SWAGs) have raised 26,000pounds through their racy charity calendar to help injured war heroes and women wounded in strife-torn Afghanistan and Iraq.

The effort saw 50 wives and girlfriends of men from the three Armed Services, stripping off to be snapped at bases and training centres in Hampshire.

However, they were careful enough to save their modesty by strategically placing pieces of military equipment.

Kelly Monk, 20, whose boyfriend Andrew Mason, 21, serves in the 2nd Battalion the Princess of Wales”s Regiment, came up with the idea for the shoot.

“I got together with Andrew”s sister, Sam, to do the shoot and it just snowballed from there,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Kelly, as saying

She added: “We were nervous at first, but then we really started enjoying it and everyone had a laugh. My boyfriend is fine with it.

“He knows that it”s for a good cause.”

Lisa Fellows-Patel, 43, said: “An old schoolfriend is in the Army and was posted to Afghanistan.

“I felt the only way I could truly support him from home was to do charity work for Help For Heroes and as I model for fun a girlfriend suggested I help with the calendar.”

“The night before, I was extremely nervous but told myself that if the armed forces are overseas fighting on my behalf I would have the courage to get naked and do my bit,” she added. (ANI)

“I think we are a really small, proud country that does big things,” she said.

Dagg kicks Highlanders to victory

Otago full-back Israel Dagg has punished an indisciplined Lions side by kicking 24 points to help the Highlanders to a 39-29 victory in their Super 14 match in Dunedin.

The South African side was heavily penalised by Australian referee Stuart Dickinson, who also awarded a penalty try to the home team.

Dagg slotted six penalties and three conversions.

The Lions, who have yet to win a match in their seven Super 14 games this season, secured a bonus point after scoring five tries but threw the game away by conceding too many kickable penalties.

“The boys showed a lot of courage and ticker when they were down in that first 20 minutes,” Highlanders captain Jimmy Cowan said.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t finish it off with a bonus [point] try, but we’ll take the win and hopefully kick on.”

The Lions had dominated the opening exchanges with full-back Michael Killian scoring their first try, which Carlos Spencer converted, before their rolling maul from line-outs led to tries from captain Cobus Grobbelaar and winger Wigan Pekeur.

The Highlanders had two penalties converted by Dagg to stay within striking distance and then finally got into the game with a 30th minute try from lock Hayden Triggs.

Dagg converted the try then took advantage of Lions infringements to kick three more penalties and give the Highlanders an unlikely 22-17 lead at half-time.

The full-back slotted his sixth penalty early in the second half, before centre Kenny Lynn chased a speculative kick beyond the tryline that Tonderai Chavhanga failed to clear and Lynn’s dive beat the scrambling winger to the ball.

The Highlanders were then awarded a penalty try when the Lions were adjudged to have deliberately collapsed a rolling maul that was headed for the line.

Lions replacement scrum half JP Joubert secured the bonus point when he scored a try after a well-worked move from an attacking scrum, before Pekeur bashed over with three minutes remaining.

“Our discipline cost us, giving away stupid penalties and I thought their goal kicker kicked well and kept them in the game,” Grobbelaar said.

Highlanders: 39 (H Triggs, K Lynn, penalty try; I Dagg 3 conversions, 6 penalties)

Lions: 29 (W Pekeur 2, M Killian, C Grobbelaar, JP Joubert tries; C Spencer, E Rose conversions)

College condemns school completion claims

The Bendigo Senior Secondary College is rejecting claims made by a state Liberal Party candidate that the school’s year 12 completion rate is declining.

The candidate for Bendigo East, Dr Michael Langdon, said yesterday the number of students finishing year 12 over the past three years had declined.

But the school says the figures are incorrect and that during the past three years, the number has increased.

The principal, Dale Pearce, says the school is sick of being used as a political football.

“It’s just very disappointing to us that there are a number of people who have sought to make public comment about our college over the last six months,” he said.

“None of them, including Michael Langdon in this case, have had either the courage or the decency to speak to me or to speak to our college council about those matters, without rushing to make public comment.”

Ancelotti vows to change Chelsea’s history of sacking managers

London, Mar 24 (ANI): Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has vowed to change the club’s history of sacking managers.

The Blues manger heads to Portsmouth tonight for a must-win match if he wants to keep Chelsea’s title hopes alive.

Owner Roman Abramovich has fired three bosses in as many years after seasons without Premier League or Champions League glory.

Ancelotti saw his side exit Europe last week and then draw 1-1 at Blackburn on Sunday to leave the side third in the Premier League, The Sun reports.

“This club is one of the most important clubs in the world so it’s normal that when you start the season the aim is to win. If we don’t win, then something”s not good. And so it’s normal that something is changed.

“But for me to win or to lose… that doesn’t mean anything with the contract. My future is definitely at Chelsea next season,” Ancelotti said.

When it was pointed out to him that history suggested the opposite, he said: “I am here to change the history of this club and I am an optimistic man. I have a very good relationship with the club and with Roman. My position is not in discussion.”

To guarantee what would be a remarkable Double in his debut season, Ancelotti must revive his players and guide them to 10 victories from now on.

And despite winning just five of their last 11 matches in all competitions, the former AC Milan manager is confident the Blues can do it.

Ancelotti, who has more than two years left on his contract, said: “We have to win 10 games. They have courage. They have personality. We have to have energy, strength, confidence to win every game.” (ANI)

The team will battle hypothermia and frostbite risks to become the first amputees to reach the Geographical North Pole, The Daily Express reported.

The third in line to the British throne, a patron of the campaign, hopes to raise 1 million pounds to help rehabilitate wounded servicemen and women into employment.

He told a London audience the project showed the “tenacity and courage of those who serve our country”. (ANI)

Elton John tells Whoopi Goldberg ‘Next Fall’ reflects his coming out struggle

London, Mar 13 (ANI): Sir Elton John has revealed on Whoopi Goldberg’s chat show The View that his new play, ‘Next Fall’, reflects some of the struggles he had coming out as gay.

John, 62, produced the play, which is a bittersweet comedy that opened on Broadway on March 12, with his partner David Furnish.

It was written by Geoffrey Nauffts, and tells the story of a gay couple, one of whom hasn’t come out as gay to his parents and struggles with the conflict with his religion.

John told Goldberg, 54, that he could totally identify with the troubled protagonist.

“I came out…at the height of my career and, yeah, it maybe hurt me a little bit but not that much and it gave me the freedom to be who I was for the rest of my life and I didn’t have to live my life in secret,” the Mirror quoted him as saying.

“I’m proud of who I am. The worst thing is to just hide and be afraid of who you are.

“I didn’t really want people to know. I didn’t have the courage in my convictions and I think as soon as I did that – when I was asked a simple question in a magazine and I said ‘yes’ – my life transformed itself.

“I don’t have any secrets now. I know it is very difficult for lots of people in different jobs but the best thing I ever did was be true to myself,” he added. (ANI)

Iraq invasion would not have happened if Bush was not misled on WMD: Aide

Washington, Mar. 5 (ANI): Former President George W Bush’s top political adviser, Karl Rove, has claimed that Bush would not have ordered the invasion of Iraq had he known that intelligence on weapons of mass destruction was erroneous.

“Would the Iraq war have occurred without WMD? I doubt it. The Bush administration itself would probably have sought other ways to constrain Saddam,” the Independent quoted Rove, as saying in his memoir, Courage and Consequence: My Life as a Conservative in the Fight.

While the Rove book is being seen as a staunch defence of the eight years that Bush spent in office, it also confirms that the Iraq war was fought under entirely false pretences.

In his book, Rove admits that failure by the White House to counter the erroneous intelligence claims was “one of the biggest mistakes of the Bush years”.

The book comes after Blair admitted that he probably would have moved ahead with removing Saddam Hussein from power even had he known that the narrative about weapons of mass destruction was fictional by finding different ways to justify it.

Although not many people will accept the notion that the White House was as out-of-the-loop about the facts on WMD, Rove says that, without the WMD storyline, Bush would surely have backed away from military action even if he, the writer, still believes it would have been justified. (ANI)

Aussie police command wobbled by sexual harassment claims

Sydney, Sep. 15 (ANI): Female police officers at an Australian police command have alleged that they were sexually harassed and intimidated by their male counterparts apart from being told that their place was in the home.

According to a complaint filed by a senior female constable at the Goulburn Local Area Command, five of her male colleagues sent sexually explicit emails to her and asked her to join a threesome.

Another three officers at the same command’s Bowral station have told their local MP they were “demeaned” due to pregnancy or because they were mothers, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The alleged harassment of the senior constable and sergeant began two years ago.

During one sleazy exchange in the police station, a senior colleague told the female constable that a threesome was “every man’s dream” and then suggested she “have a go” with the girlfriend of another officer.

The policewomen have also alleged that a local man was assaulted during an arrest in the middle of 2007 and that it was never investigated, despite his family attempting to make a complaint.

The senior constable said the arresting officer told her: “That guy’s a piece of s…, he was carrying on like a f…..t and mouthing off, he got what he deserved, we flogged him, he got pile-driven into the ground head first.”

A police spokesman said the women were the subject of a 181D action and faced a loss of confidence of the Commissioner.

“Their reward for a combined 37 years of dedicated front-line service is to be subjected to systematic bullying by male officers because of their gender and because they had the courage to stand up and complain about their treatment,” Hodgkinson said.
The two women have paid dearly for their service, with the senior constable needing surgery to fuse her spine last year and the sergeant suffering a broken back on duty. (ANI)

One call from Saudi Arabia would seal Musharraf trial seekers’ mouth: PML-Q

Lahore, Sep.2 (ANI): Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) Secretary General Mushahid Hussain Sayed has said that former President General Pervez Musharraf had left the country after inking a deal with the present government regarding not being prosecuted under high treason charges, and that one call from Saudi government would silence Musharraf’s trial seekers.

Speaking on a television chat show, Sayed said only a single telephone call from Saudi Arabia would stop demands for Musharraf’s trial.

While ruling out any involvement of the Armed Forces in the present crisis, he said Musharraf’s trial under Article Six was impossible.

“The present system had no problem from the army or the Inter-Services Intelligence or any so-called secret agencies,” The Daily Times quoted Sayed, as saying.

Commenting on the PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif’s threat to hold a long march demanding Musharraf’s trial, he said Pakistan could ill-afford midterm elections or long marches against the ‘democratic’ government.

Sayed said the country’s leadership should have the courage to decisions on their own rather than depending upon calls from British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs David Miliband or US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke. (ANI)

The mum-daughter duo who beat cancer four times between them

London, Aug 23 (ANI): Mandy Kelly and six-year-old Eve are more than just the ordinary mother-daughter duo – they’ve beaten cancer four times between them.

Mandy and Eve have both struggled with cancer and have successfully fought it off each time.

The Mirror quoted Mandy as saying: “We have beaten it together, and that really is a miracle…We have been there for each other and gave each other the strength to fight on.”

Eve took nine months of chemotherapy to come off the cancer, which started in her kidneys and spread to her lungs.

As Eve continued her fight with cancer, Mandy’s breast cancer reappeared. The 47-year-old had already battled cancer twice but this time she need a needed a mastectomy (surgical removal of breasts completely or partially).

And this time the mother drew inspiration from her daughter’s courage.

Mandy said: “I knew if she could do it, I could do it too…Eve gave me the strength to beat it again. She knew I had already beaten cancer twice when she was diagnosed, so that encouraged her.

“She had seen me come through it, and so could she.”

Mandy, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998 and it was cured after treatment.

But in autumn of 2003, Mandy developed a new lump in her breast. The cancer had reappeared.

She said: “I couldn’t believe it…this hit me harder than the first time I was diagnosed with cancer as I now had a baby less than a year old. Eve had been a miracle baby for Richard and me as I’d conceived against all the odds. To be told that my cancer had come back was devastating.

“And it was tough trying to cope with a 10-month baby and having treatment for cancer as well. But Richard and my family gave me lots of support so I could get through it.

“My sister would have Eve when I went to hospital for my radiotherapy, or she’d come to hospital with me and wait with her in the waiting room.”

Fortunately for Mandy, her cancer was tracked in its initial stage. The lump was removed and she was declared fit.

Everything was going well, when in October 2006, Eve fell ill. Her scan showed signs of a kidney tumour.

Mandy said: “This time, our world really did fall apart. To be told my three-year-old girl had cancer as well was too much to bear. I asked whether I could have passed it on in the womb and doctors reassured me I hadn’t. It was just terrible bad luck.”

Eve’s cancer was fast spreading to her lungs, so doctors fixed her an aggressive chemo session that ended in July 2007.

Last June Mandy was diagnosed with cancer for the third time. Now she was required to undergo a mastectomy. And she drew courage from her daughter.

“We were there for each other,” Mandy said. “When we felt low, we loved to sit on the sofa watching children’s TV and having a cuddle. I knew I could beat it again. I had to do it for Eve, because she’d been so brave.

“And it was nothing compared to watching her go through treatment. That was the toughest thing of all.”

Mandy completed the Race For Life event for Cancer Research to celebrate her recovery. This was her ninth year of participation and even Eve joined in with her.

She said: “Walking across the finish line with my little girl was an amazing feeling…. That mum-daughter thing is very special between us.

“In all, we’ve faced cancer four times – and we couldn’t have done it without each other.” (ANI)
